This book has the merit of making accessible to a wide audience the thought of Dom Gueranger. The original work is too long for most people today. The plan for this abridgement was done by Jean Vaquie in 1977 and the publishers just translated his shortening of the text.
The text itself is very enlightening about the attacks on the liturgy that took place in the 1700s and which Fr. Pierre LeBrun fought against. Dom Gueranger is able to note the characteristics of a bad liturgical spirit and, in doing so, seems to have a prophetic prescience of the spirit that drove the crafting of the Novus Ordo. By seeing the healthy reaction against bad liturgical changes in the past, we understand better why modern liturgical changes were not good.
