NOTE: One of the authors graciously gave me a copy of this book and asked me to write a review.

While the protagonists of many popular YA series may seem like superheroes, Ted Finley, a high school senior who is the central character of Bryan Cohen and Casey Lane's Viral Superhero series goes them one better—he actually does have superpowers, courtesy of some intergalactic beings who have chosen him to protect Earth from conquest by the forces of evil. In the third installment in the series, The Candidate, Ted shows that he still has some work to do in becoming a polished hero. Similarly, the authors still have some work to do to polish up The Candidate.

The authors have developed the backstory for The Candidate over the first two volumes in the series. (It should be noted that an earlier version of this series appeared on Amazon under the title, Ted Saves the World.) The authors’ version of Earth is a battleground between the Light Souls, who gave Ted his powers, and the Dark Souls, many of whom have their own powers. Ted has a mentor named Erica, a centuries-old being who inhabits the body of a deceased former classmate of Ted’s, and, in a bit of a cosmic conflict of interest, is also becoming Ted’s romantic interest. The Dark Souls also gain recruits from the deceased, who, in true Walking Dead fashion, become Dark Souls themselves. One of the more entertaining aspects of the Viral Superhero series has been Ted’s “Scooby Squad” of helpers, three of his classmates, who, along with Erica, help him out.

In The Candidate, one of these new Dark Souls is the Gatekeeper, a woman who has the power to open portals between worlds and release some pretty nasty creatures here on Earth. These creatures are giant wolf-beasts and lizards of varying sizes, including one dragon the size of a building. Much of The Candidate consists of a series of battles between Ted and his friends and various of these creatures, who seem to pop up across the country at random, wreaking havoc wherever they go. Of course, the attacks aren’t at random; they are part of a master scheme one of the Dark Souls has cooked up that Ted only figures out later in the book.

The real strength of the Viral Superhero series has been the supporting cast, with Ted’s friends becoming distinctive characters over the course of the series with their own storylines. And, here too, some of his non-superpowered friends wind up having to take down a few of the creatures on their own and coming up with inventive ways to do so. Their storylines also continue to evolve, providing some much-needed change-of-pace scenes in The Candidate.

How much readers enjoy The Candidate will probably depend on how much they like superhero action. Ted’s powers are deliberately still somewhat ill-defined, as he gradually discovers his true capabilities as the series progresses, but a lot of them are fairly standard superhero powers, and the fight scenes grow somewhat repetitive over the course of the book. In one good twist, one of the creatures has a Kryptonite-like ability to sap Ted’s powers at times, making his task of defeating the beasts more difficult, but I still found reading about this many battles in a relatively short book a bit boring at times.

There are two other things about The Candidate that lower the overall reading experience. First, although the characters are now seniors in high school, they seem to have regressed emotionally to middle-school level. Much of the book revolves around who is in love with whom and they act more like eighth graders than twelfth graders in that regard. The characters also resort to cheesy quips and jokes that were probably stale when I was an eighth grader, such as, when one of Ted’s friends defeats a wolf-beast: “I just blew your house down.” I realize that the book is a YA novel, but this type of humor seems more middle school at best. Second, the authors “surprise” readers by having characters from earlier novels turn up unexpectedly, without much explanation of who they are. For readers unfamiliar with the earlier books, this makes figuring out what’s going on rather confusing.

The Candidate is still worthwhile reading for fans of this genre, as readers get additional insight into Ted’s powers and the full nature of the universe the authors have created. But it is not at the same level as the first two books. In addition, The Candidate ends with a full-fledged cliffhanger, a development that the authors apparently felt guilty enough about to issue a form of an apology in an afterword to the novel. Readers who don’t appreciate such endings should be forewarned. For the rest, The Candidate is a bit like Ted Finley himself, still possessing its power but feeling the strain a lot more.

The Viral Superhero series continues to go from strength to strength in this, its third book. The main characters continue to grow in maturity and complexity while they take in all comers be they politicians, a gatekeeper between realms or other evil-doers in an effort to save Earth from becoming a planet-wide battlefield. An excellent sci fi story, this is particularly good at developing the supporting characters as real people who make real (significant) contributions to the goals that they are working for along with series' lead Ted. Similarly, while there is a romance element between Ted and Erica, it is done in a mature way that respects both characters as real people with their own goals, strengths and weaknesses. Truly well thought out book, The Candidate is also just plain fun - and definitely recommended.

In our first thrilling adventure, in book 1 Ted Finley is the average nerd, who all the sudden has super powers and as is usual these days of celebrity stars becomes a viral video sensation. Besides being a teenager,his other problems include not being the only one with super powers, not knowing who is a friend and who could be a deadly foe, oh and saving the world from total annihilation and possibly the universe while not getting himself killed doing that. Killer cheerleaders may or may not play a part in this story, and happily ever after can be iffy.
{This book is an edited and revamped new edition of a novel that was previously published as Ted Saves the World.}

In the second weeks episode, book 2 The Telepath we find out if a superhero can stop a mind-controlling menace, that all girlfriends keep secrets just some more than others, and certain secrets may hold the key to winning the battle but losing the war. {This book is an edited and revamped new edition of a novel that was previously published as Mind Over Easy.} The GHA {Go Home Alien} protest is still going strong, the Sheriff gets a non-birthday present, Erica has been training Ted in the use of his power but didn't expect him to find an additional one all by himself. old sorta girlfriend gets ticked, sorta new girlfriend and sorta new old new girlfriend get all messed up, forgetfulness and never forgetting vengeance, and summer 'vacation'? { This book is an edited and revamped new edition of a novel that was previously published as Mind Over Easy.}

In the next episode, #3 The Candidate it's all Double Trouble Toil and Portals...oh and that Ted guy is back around. 'Summer Vacation' took on a bunch of new meanings. As the barriers between worlds start to crumble, a superhero must battle his greatest enemy yet…After a summer spent protecting the vulnerable from natural disasters, Ted Finley couldn’t be happier to return home for his senior year of high school. While he dreams of fighting back-to-back with his protector, Erica LaPlante, a new and powerful enemy threatens to end their mission for good, and if that weren't enough, they must face down a cunning presidential candidate, a disgruntled gatekeeper between realms, and two familiar villains if they want to keep a deadly army at bay. If they fail, the people they know and love will find themselves on a planet-wide battlefield… The Candidate is the third novel in The Viral Superhero Series, a saga of heroes, villains, and high school. If you like action-packed fight scenes, witty banter, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then you’ll love Bryan Cohen & Casey Lane’s epic third installment. {This book is an edited and revamped new edition of a novel that was previously published as Portal Combat.}

I LOVE Ted!!!!

Fantastic story!! I have been reading this series from the start and with each book I keep getting more & more obsessed with them!!!! I find that the characters are “real”, well as real as can be for the ones that are not from this plane or from this planet even!! I love how the group of Ted and his friends want to be able to enjoy senior year like every other senior before them, but at the same time, they run to help save whomever needs saving, regardless of their capabilities! (or lack of them!) I also really like how even though they are all “famous” or get recognized by the public, they have literally saved the lives of everyone on the planet, heck even the saved the planet as well, they are all still teenagers with teen problems, thoughts, desires and concerns – like what they are going to do next year after they graduate. I love all the twists and turns and how unpredictable it is!!! The one main point I want to mention is that I love how each book just flows straight into the next one. There isn’t any “wasted” time doing re-caps etc. so if you were to sit and read all of the books straight through, you are not getting blasted with a lot of redundant information and the little bits that are there for re-caps are worked into the story. The characters may daydream, have nightmares, something reminds them of something or someone else and they “reflect” back on it. In my opinion that just adds charm to it and makes for a smoother and more enjoyable read. Bryan has done a terrific job keeping track of all of the various people, whose on the Dark side and on the Light, the magics, powers, abilities, relationships and the whole story arc straight! Not that it is a lot and hard to follow as a reader, but to be able to keep it all consistent through ALL of the books so far is awesome!!! I imagine that by the time we get to The End, this series is going to both feel and read as one massively well written adventure of epic proportions!!! Which also showcases the phenomenal talent that Bryan has!! Not an easy job to tackle a story of this calibre so successfully…so far, but by the time we reach the Grand Finale I am more than confident in Bryan that it will be an Ending to End all Endings!! Every book I read of this series just keeps getting better and better and has had me so enthralled that I actually finished this book in record time for me!!! Cannot wait to read the next book! Heck, I can’t wait to read the WHOLE SERIES!! As with the two previous books (which do need to be read in order) they are books that everyone should read!

Ted is only getting better with each addition to the series! Ted and company continue to grab you from the beginning of the book to the very end. I love how the author keeps the storyline fresh with new twists and turns to keep the reader guessing.

Each new book adds dimensions and depths to characters, as well as introducing new ones. I'm enjoying getting to know them, understand them, and care about them. I really appreciate how Mr. Cohen allows the young women to be strong, independent, yet likeable. So many authors of YA series don't write strong women well. Each character shows faults, fears and willingness to do whatever it takes to help Ted. While Ted is saving the world, his friends are doing their part right beside him. LOVE that.

I also appreciate how well the author merges so many genres into something that's light, yet makes me hold my breath. Science fiction - check, romance - check, mystery - check, political intrigue - check, time/portal travel - check, fantasy - check....it just all blends into a story that's hard to put down.

The series flow so well from one book to the next, that it's easy to pick up the new book and fall right back into the world of Ted. That shows the talents of Bryan Cohen to it's best. He entertains, he makes you care about the characters and the world he's writing about, and he keeps you wanting the next book and the next. This is one series I'd love to see continue, although I cannot imagine where we'll go next...oh that's right - right through a portal into another world. LOVE it!

Cannot wait for book 4. Recommend this book and this series.

Ted is only getting better with each book in series! His powers are growing and he is learning at a steady pace. Ted and his team continue to grab you from the beginning of the book to the very end. The author keeps the storyline fresh with new challenges for Ted to face in each book.

The dimensions and depths of each character continues to grow and there are always as well as new ones alomg the way. Some quite surprising. I'm enjoying getting to know them, understand them, and care about them. I love how they all work as a team and the women are also strong, independent and likeable. Very few authors don't write strong women well. Each character shows faults, fears and and a willingness to do whatever it takes to help Ted. While Ted is saving the world, his friends are doing their part right beside him. He is never truly doing this alone.

The author merges many genres into something that's light, yet makes me hold my breath. Science fiction, mystery, political intrigue, time/portal travel, fantasy etc. Quite a feat and all well blended to make the story work.

The series flow so well from one book to the next, although this one has quite a cliffhanger. The author draws us in and makes us care about the characters and the world they are fighting for, which means you can't wait for the next book in the series. This is one series Sher you wonder where the book will take you next. Well. At least we know the next one starts with right through a portal into another world.

Cannot wait for book 4. Recommend this book and this series.

Keeps getting better with each instalment of the series! “Portal Combat” picks up at the end of Ted’s summer holiday, which he has spent protecting people from natural disasters that have happened around the world, under the supervision of the Department of Homeland Security. Once again it is all go for Ted and his friends, not only is it there Senior year in school which is hard enough, they’ve got the a cunning presidential candidate, a disgruntled gatekeeper between realms, and two familiar villains to sort out or they’ll find themselves in a Earth /other worlds battlefield. Another good instalment to the series. Thank you to the author, Bryan Cohen, for providing me with an eBook of 'Ted Saves the World' for the purposes of writing an honest review, it was a pleasure to read.

Not as strong as previous books and some of the one liners didnt quite have their usual flair and felt forced(especially the dog jokes). However this may have been because Ted and his friends spent a good deal of the book apart. If you have enjoyed previous books then you will still like Portal combat and if you haven't yet read them don't let this review put you off the starting the series as I think this may have been a fluke in an ongoing series.

I am completely hooked on Ted! He is the quintessential every day Joe who has finally embraced his role as the hero we all need. I love how Ted hasn't let his fame go to his head. I love the world Bryan Cohen has created with the Ted Saves the World series. He somehow makes superpowers and saving the world commonplace for Ted. I have enjoyed reading each of the books in this series and highly recommend you give Ted Saves the World a try!

Super Ted gets more impressive.
He is growing into his powers and learning the real responsibilities of being a hero.
This series is getting darker yet still keeps the humour. I love the imagery and great interactions between the main characters. The enemies are becoming harder to fight but Ted and his team keep battling while still trying to be teens.
A great book and a brilliant YA series.

The best of the series so far. The action was fast-paced and kept the book moving along. The monsters were great. The dialogue, once again, was funny. An awesome bad guy (and quite a surprise.) If you read the book, you'll know what I mean. These books would make a great television series.
