Behind the moss-draped trees, Mint Juleps and stately mansions of the American Deep South lies a foreboding and deadly dark side. Multimillionaire drug lords do power lunches with Southern aristocrats by day and lay waste to their rivals by night in a bloodbath not seen since the Civil War. At the helm of the million-dollar drug deals, bling-bling lifestyle and widespread murder hails the power Lake Clan, led by ruthless New Orleans kingpins Marion ''Snookey'' Lake and his ambitious nephew, Rae-Kwon. The Lakes relocate to Georgia in an effort to both escape the Feds and spread their ever-growing dominance within the Southern crime infrastructure. However, they are met with immediate and violent resistance from the South Carolina's feared Sea Island thugs who jealously guard their fertile drug turf. Travel down I-95 South into a ruthless environment, which, until recently, lay hidden beneath the long-held façade of Southern comfort. Experience the real Dirty South.
Darrel A. King has been writing ever since the age of eight. His first published work of fiction was penned during the fall of 1976 as a student of Mary Field’s Elementary School on South Carolina’s Daufuskie Island. This effort was an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkein’s “The Hobbit,” that he also wrote and illustrated. It was published in the school’s quarterly periodical, “The Daufuskie Kid’s Magazine.” Darrel King has written stories and numerous poems, several of which were published in the 1995-1996 “Poetry Anthology” by the National Library of Poetry in Owings Mills, Maryland. During the 90s, Darrell King became inspired by and attracted to the lurid tales of inner city crime. Dramas he read in novels by great writers such as Donald Goines and Iceberg Slim captivated his attention. These tales prompted Mr. King to begin his literary career writing his very own stories of urban crime and inner city drama. Darrel King is the author of Mack Daddy: Legacy of a Gangsta, Dirty South, How Do You Want It? and Mo' Dirty : Still Stuntin’ is his latest release and the much anticipated sequel to Dirty South. Darrell King was raised in South Carolina's Dufuskie Island. He now resides in Maryland with his wife and children.
In the novel Dirty south readers will be taken on a journey of drugs, sex, lies and murder and that is just the beginning. The story revolves around notorious New Orleans kingpin Marion “Snookey” Lake, his two kids Shawn and Dawn and his nephew Rae-Kwon.
Lake is a man about his business but as focused on his money he is on his family and nothing or no one will get in the way of that. Dirty South is a very vivid tale of the underground drug game and readers will see on several occasions the drug game has no loyalty and you always have to think two steps ahead.
Dirty South indeed tells a gritty tale of the fast life of drugs, guns and violence and even though the story does seem a bit drawn out it still was an interesting read. For true fans of street literature then Dirty South will not disappoint but if you are more in to a slow paced novel, put this book down immediately because Darrell King puts you in the front seat. At times you will not know what is going to happen next. Dirty South truly tells the story of what is like to be on a paper chase. With the life of crime comes enemies and with that Rae and the family is constantly looking over his or her own shoulder.
What did you like best about this book? I enjoyed that the author really painted a vivid picture for everything that was going on throughout out the book. This book definitely was detail oriented with the scenes taken place throughout the novel were seen.
What did you dislike about this book? I didn’t like that the author told a tale that was a little far fetched. There was a lot of crimes being committed but everyone else but RaeKwon and Snooky were ever injured and if they were it was something minor compared to the horrendous crimes they were committing.
How can the author improve this book? In areas where the story just seemed to go on and on, I would suggest to keep up with the flow of the story and move on to the next scene as well as eliminating some of the narration in the book.
what I think about this book is that it really impressed me in the setting. Theres so much Gangs, drugs, strippers, and so on. when I first saw this book it really called my attention. If someone really wanned to read this book they would actually really learn about a lot of things .One like an example,Snookey got pregnant at 14 with this boy that did drugs. When the baby was born ,he started hitting his son . She decided to move on, get a job, put her son in school, and she went out to look for a one. Its a really interesting book ones you get to read it, trust me.
