I absolutely LOVED this book,
Scream it from the rooftops loved it!

From the very first page, it had me hooked with the details: the map, the hilarious quotes, the clever play on names, Jamie, Billie, Stu, Wes, Prescott, Carpenter, Laurie… the list goes on.
Every reference felt like a wink to horror fans—Scream, She’s All That, and yes… frosting ourselves 💎 (IYKYK).
This wasn’t just fan service—it was a love letter to the greats, wrapped in blood, banter, and heart-pounding suspense.
This story is a genuinely intense slasher and a laugh out loud, root for true love rom-com.
One minute my heart was racing, the next I was grinning like an idiot. Shailee either did her homework or is a certified thriller/rom-com junkie—because the balance here is chef’s kiss.

When Jamie Prescott and her best friend Laurie attend a speed-dating event, they expect awkward conversations and late-night food—not a blackout, a murder at their table, and a masked killer stalking the room. Literally obsessed! I absolutely loved this book SO much! Easy 5 stars, and will totally appeal to a wide variety of readers! And the references…killer! 

This is a debut novel that is going to put Shailee Thompson on everyone's radar! It is a slasher AND a rom-com. That's right! What a mashup! I cannot even begin to tell you how much I loved this. Jamie is a movie fanatic. She and her roomie/bestie Laurie attend a speed-dating night. What's the worst that could happen, right? When the lights go out and Jamie's current date gets his throat slashed, the worst that can happen, happens. Jamie finds herself stuck in a real-life slasher, but also a rom-com, as she falls for leading man Wes, who seems to be determined to save as many lives as he can while finding a way out. No one knows the blueprints for these types of movies better than Jamie does, and she is determined to be the final girl and the leading lady in the end! 

This book is delightfully fun, witty, and fast-paced. Thompson doesn't shy away from gore, but also writes a cute romance! I had so much fun reading this book. I think it's going to be incredibly popular! Book releases 2/3/26. Just in time for a bloody Valentine!

❤️ It’s a really fun read and the second half had me hooked
❤️Neat little twists and despite the many murderS, warm and fuzzy (best of both worlds)
❤️Really likeable characters.
❤️I like horror and rom-coms so this felt like a no brainer. Just a really fun play on movie tropes throughout. You can tell the author loves both too.

💔The meta commentary from the leading lady/final girl was a bit much at times. I think the target audience understands how these stories work and can pick up on it without being spoon fed. But I guess that’s also her character..
❤️‍🩹Also at no point did I understand the layout of the club. Felt like that was over explained for some reason and I didn’t get it. That might just be me though! Someone draw me a map.

Loved this entertaining cinematic slasher rom-com story!

I was so immersed in the clever story, that follows cinephile Jamie Prescott, who becomes trapped in the centre of a murder spree at a speed-dating event. Armed with her extensive knowledge of what not to do in a slasher, she is forced to figure out how to avoid becoming a Final Girl.

I love how each chapter begins with a misquote from a romantic comedy, with a horrifying meaning. The humour in the story is what makes it such an enjoyable read, as well as the many pop culture references. It also has a map, which I love!

'You have to decide how you want the movie to end. You have to decide what role you're going to take in it. Because Final Girls and Leading Ladies aren't born. They're made. They're a culmination of their choices.'

This was an immersive read for me, listening to the audio while following along in the book. I loved the audiobook narration by Stefanie Kay and Patrick Zellerand, as well as the quality audio production!

This is an incredible debut and I am very keen to read more from Aussie author Shailee Thompson.

I’m a big fan of reading at least the first 50 pages in one sitting when beginning a new book, and I highly encourage you to do that with this one. The story takes off 50 pages in and from there it’s a wild ride. A cross between a romcom and a thriller, you have to suspend a bit of reality here to enjoy this crazy tale. I did very nearly take a star off for the…excessive romance in the midst of a horrifying encounter which was just entirely unrealistic but. It was a fun read.

Much like Jamie, I'm someone who adores horror movies and rom coms equally. And there were so many great references, easter eggs and nods to the biggest movies from both genres for fellow fans.
This is a slasher movie come to life, with some hints of romance, and it has such a cinematic feel to it.
The story keeps you on the edge of your seat and you're not sure who to trust, even if I was rather suspicious of who turned out to be the male killer. But maybe that's just because I usually have an inkling when it comes to similar reveals in some of my favourite franchises.
While it was rather creative having essentially every single character name be inspired by a famous movie character, from Wes and the Cravin' nightclub to John Carpenter, Laurie Strode and Sidney Prescott all being utilised, sometimes they felt a bit shoe horned in.
But speaking of the characters, I liked how well the ensemble cast was handled and that they all felt distinct, even at the beginning.
There are some brilliantly tense sequences, with the club feeling claustrophobic and like you're trapped in it with them. I also liked that we got some romantic moments too in amongst all the blood and literal guts. I would have been swooning for Wes too.
It maybe dragged a little bit, but overall the pacing was pretty good.
I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for what Shailee Thompson does next.

This book was so much fun! It was a rom-com/thriller in the best possible way. The book opens with the main character Jamie and her best friend Laurie discussing Jamie's dissertation which is all about rom-com movies and thrillers. She is an expert and that really in handy for her when she found herself literally trapped in a rom-com gone terribly wrong. The premise of a speed date killer was unique and fresh, although I did figure out who was the killer very early on in the book, I still enjoyed the ride. It was very campy and honestly so funny. I loved Jamie and Laurie's relationship. I also thought it was so fun how all the characters were named after famous thriller characters/directors. There were lots of Easter eggs and nods to movies that were very enjoyable. This was one of my favorite books of the year and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a fun thriller! Thank you, Netgalley for the arc.

I ate this book up! This book spoke to my romcom and slasher loving soul! Yes, those two genres should not work together but I’m here to tell you, they do!
This book follows Jamie Prescott who along with her best friend Laurie, attends a speed dating night. Yet after the ninth date of the night, a killer strikes and all hell breaks loose! Jamie then needs to use everything she knows about how to survive a slasher to get herself and Laurie through the night.
This was a fantastic debut by an Aussie author and I cannot wait to see what Shailee writes next!

“how to kill a guy in ten dates” was SUCH a fun read and i literally couldn’t put it down! it blends the most entertaining parts of a classic slasher film with a sprinkle of romcom 💌

i have to confess that i did guess everything by 50% (it does, after all, utilise our favourite slasher archetypes) but i was still not disappointed in the slightest & very much remained on the edge of my seat.

No notes! This book was a blast to read. The storyline allowed you to get to know the characters as the book progressed so it wasnt like having to dive into a story lost. The action was well written, impactful but did not detract from the story. I was on the edge of my seat in suspense, but also laughing and rooting for love. It kept me guessing the whole time and I was wrong over and over, and then wrong about being wrong. I just genuinely all around enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would.

When Jamie Prescott and her best friend attend a speed-dating event at a club, the worst thing they anticipate is mediocre small-talk from average men. They never expected to be living out the dream of some sadistic serial killer that is out to get them all.
Jamie, self-renowned lover and student of films (especially horror and romance), is able to use her knowledge of The Rules and tropes to try and survive the night.
What entails is a cat-and-mouse thrill between a group of strangers and the menacing figure slowly stalking towards them...

On a personal level, I am also a lover of horror movies and rom-coms, so I might be biased but this book was an absolute joy. I couldn't put it down. There was the right amount of romance and thrills to keep you entertained and guessing whodunnit. I found myself kicking my feet and grinning at the cute moments and then gasping at the next spree of murders.

If a rom-com met a slasher, it’d be How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates.

This was a hugely entertaining audiobook — fast-paced, self-aware, and packed with personality. What starts as a light-hearted speed-dating event quickly spirals into slasher chaos, with cinephile Jamie Prescott drawing on her encyclopaedic knowledge of rom-com and horror tropes to make it through the night.

One of my favourite elements was the chapter openers — classic romance film quotes cleverly reworked with a darker, killer edge. From 10 Things I Hate About You and Bridget Jones to Pride and Prejudice and The Wedding Singer, they added so much charm and became something I genuinely looked forward to at the start of each chapter.

The audiobook format really elevated the experience. The narration was engaging, and the added sound effects gave it a cinematic feel — like listening to a slasher film play out rather than a traditional audiobook. The pop-culture references were plentiful, including Taylor Swift nods — and despite not being a Swiftie (social anomaly, I know), I thought these were woven in really well and were easy to enjoy even as a non-fan.

For a debut by a Brisbane-based Australian author, this was confident, creative, and incredibly fun. A smart rom-com / slasher mash-up that fully embraces its concept and delivers exactly the kind of chaotic energy it promises.

If you had told me a slasher romcom was going to be the cure to my reading slump I wouldn’t have believed you. I’ve been on the hunt for a book that really sucked me in, something that I didn’t want to put down, for months and I finally found it.

This is perfect for people who loved butcher and blackbird but want something a little different.

I like the writing, I like the humor, I like the romance, and I like the horror + gore.

This is definitely going to be one of the next booktok darlings and I think it’s earned its place.

🥀 My thoughts:

Be still my heart. Another book I fell in love with that has the romance and slasher mashup!! Infinite stars from me, friends. I have picked up this book a few times over the last couple of months and I swear every time I did, my kids would mess with it… (it’s the cover they like) but FINALLY I got to sit and read it! With only a few breaks (because responsibilities) I was able to binge this and completely devour it in less than 24 hours. I loved every single thing about it. It’s fun, bloody, AND swoony. I loved the romcom movie quotes turned sinister at the start of every chapter and that this story had me on my toes. I was second guessing myself at the same time Jamie was questioning herself. And as swoony as the romance was… it was the friendship between Jamie and Laurie that stole the show for me! It’s almost like if the Scream franchise, the movie how to be single, and love actually had a baby… THIS BOOK is that baby. This is one book you need to have on your radar come 2026 because it is KILLER. How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates is out 2/3/26!!

(ARC - out 02/03/26 via Gallery) This was so fun. God, I loved this. I went in with low expectations which I’m sure helped, but this was just a pure delight. It’s a horror/romance (heavier on the horror), with our final girl, Jamie, attending a speed dating event at which a serial killer begins killing other attendees. Jamie is forced to put her encyclopedic knowledge of horror movies to the test in order to figure out who the murderer is. And oh yeah, she also finds romance in this incredibly tense situation. The writing is witty and so pleasurable, the pop culture references are frequent but not jarring, and this fulfills my romance requirement that the novel needs to have another plot going on in addition to the romance. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the romance was my least favorite part of the story, but I did still like it. I also loved the timeline of this - it’s like a bottle episode of a tv show, but it’s a full-length novel. I feel like that has to be hard to write! Kudos to Shailee Thompson, what an absolute treat this was. And what a debut!

How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates is a mix of horror and romance which seems like it be harder to make work in what’s also a comedic story, but it really works here. With the main female character, Jamie, being a big fan of horror and romance films we the readers get to enjoy some education and a wink to tropes in each in this story which brings a lightness amongst the gore.

Jamie and Laurie are roomies who go on a speed dating night where murder joins the mix and the daters get picked off. Throughout Jamie balances her interest in two of her dates as the group tries to survive (and figure out who is after them). The ending was a fun surprise and somewhat appropriate given Jamie’s interests. If you’re a fan of horror or romance and want a little change up in either genre, very few books will deliver that (well) with giggles to boot like this one.

Completely unhinged and romantic - ‘How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates’ delivers on being a slasher romcom with a high dead body count and a multitude of romantic comedy pop culture references. You have to go into this expecting unhinged antics and a book that is aware of how deeply unserious it is. I don’t know why but the dynamic between the protagonist and love interest felt very reminiscent of Miss Congeniality which was fun. This is one of those stories that will transcend even better to screen. Overall, I thought this was fun and quick read.

One to look out for in 2026 but be prepared for this to very unserious and unrealistic.

I had high expectations going into this one based on the cover, synopsis and other ARC reviews but unfortunately I just didn’t love it.

Like myself, the main character is obsessed with rom coms and horror movies but the overuse of movie and pop culture references really became way too much for me. I found she was repeating herself a lot which became a bit annoying.

Despite this, the book was well written and I did not guess the plot twist which was fun!. I did read it in under 12 hours.

What really makes this book shine is how confidently it commits to the madness. Each chapter escalates the body count, the tension, and the stakes, blending brutal slasher elements with clever satire of romcoms and thrillers that belong together. The violence is unapologetic, the pacing is relentless, and just when you think you know where the story is headed, it veers off into something even more outrageous.

Despite the gore and carnage, the book is surprisingly smart. This was a fun romance slasher novel that played out in my head like a movie!

Jamie and Laurie have such a fun and relatable friendship dynamic that had me laughing with them and I know all too well the feeling of going back to an old club and having the memories rush back, minus all the murder of course!

I enjoyed trying to figure out who the killer is and I was half right 🤣 Bit hard to explain without spoiling lmaoo so dm when ur done 👀

Also as a huge movie buff myself, I quite enjoyed that Jamie was one of them and the continued reference to the rules of horror movies was quite fun, because DUH, YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE RULES!

The slashing was hectic and very easy to visualise and had me cringing like fk lmao and the romance was cuuuuute, I quite enjoyed the blossoming relationship and forced proximity situation going on 🤣 I'll admit I was suss af on Wes the whole time tho 🤣🤣

There was maybe a bit too much inner dialogue for me and some parts I felt like I was scanning, not reading, but other than that it was really good and fun and I enjoyed it heaps!

Also the audiobook of this is awesome, I think I enjoyed that more than reading it, because Jamie's personality and jokes really shine through!! the actors did a great job!

All in all, this was a fun read for people that like Scream, Prom Night and all those fun jump scare gory movies mixed with a lil romance 🤣
