Aron Falls #2

When We Were Them

Rate this book
What do you do when the man you spent one unforgettable night with—
the one who caught you leaving in tears—turns out to be your new millionaire boss?

It started in a hotel bar on the worst night of my life.
I was forcing down cheap whiskey when a gorgeous stranger with sad eyes treated me to top-shelf… and a night I’ll never forget.

Fake names. A flirty game of Never Have I Ever.
One night that made me feel wanted, seen… alive.
A night that let me forget—for a little while—why everything was falling apart.

Back to reality—I’m scraping pennies to afford my mom’s care, and I need this job.
Which would be fine… if my boss weren’t the man from that night—grumpy, guarded, impossible… yet sometimes, heartbreakingly, still the him I remember.

But life doesn’t allow us to be them—the couple from that night.
So, I shouldn’t fall for him.
But I do.

Until cutting words break us.

Can love survive what tore us apart?
Or were we only ever meant to share that one magical night… when we were them?

When We Were Them is the second book in the Aron Falls small town romance interconnected standalone series. There are five hot Aron brothers and, lucky us, we get to watch each of them fall in love, one book at a time. This is Harrison's story. Finley Daniels writes romances that are heartfelt, healing, and filled with happy endings. Don’t be surprised if you laugh, cry, then laugh again all in the same book. Finley probably did all of those while writing it…

Finley is a voracious reader. She often loses herself (and sleep) for hours at a time into the world of whatever book she is reading… especially if she’s lucky enough to be relaxing somewhere on a warm beach near the ocean.

She loves gardening, being out in nature, and her fur babies. Her husband isn't so bad, either. She’s also obsessed with watching the owls that live in a nesting box in her back yard. That means if you follow her newsletter, you’ll undoubtedly see lots of pics featuring flowers, pups, and owls!

Finley lives in the Northeastern United States.

I really enjoy reading Delaney and Harrison love story.  As both struggle with their individual past and present experiences, they are confronted with turbulent and dark emotion.  Will they be able to form a true authentic connection?  Can they get to that place which makes them THEM?

But this is what really keeps my attention.  The relationship with Delaney and her mom😍. Hattie is diagnosed with early dementia.  Let me tell you, the way this author approaches such a sensitive subject, wow. It is gentle and real, she does this with care, accuracy and so much love.  I felt so close to both personas, my heart lost a few beats, and my tears blurred my kindle.

This is a great story.  From pain to sooth, it conveys hope and reconciliation.

Thank you @romance_author_finley_daniels for another heartwarming book. ✌️

My Thoughts:
What an emotional read and my heart hurt for Delaney and i just wanted to give her big hug, it’s always been just her and her mom and her mom was diagnosed with dementia. Delaney became her moms care taker and on top of that she was working herself to the bone but she couldn’t care for her mom the way she needs and decides to put her mom in a in care facility. Harrison is the perfect grumpy millionaire but he also holds a lot in because he blames himself for his fathers death, then there’s Layla Harrison’s niece and she knows how to put a smile on his face When We Were Them is a deeply emotional story about who we used to be, who we’ve become, and whether love can survive the space between those versions of ourselves. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend to others.

This is actually book two in the Aron Falls series. However, as you can see from the fact I’ve been able to read and review this, you definitely do not need to have read When We Were More first. I will no doubt be going back and doing so, because small-town romances are my jam! This is very much your typical small-town romcom, set around five brothers.

In a nutshell, the story centres around how a one-night stand becomes a little bit more. One night that was just about the now - no names, no history, no expectations. Two people ‘escaping’ their realities for a night of fun, with nothing more. But it turns out we essentially have a new employee and her soon-to-be millionaire boss. Oops.

We have ‘Betty’ aka Delaney, a strong-willed, independent woman who is struggling financially and emotionally due to caring for her mother. She takes on multiple jobs, works around the clock, refuses handouts, and prioritises everyone but herself. She devotes her spare time to visiting and supporting her mother, who has been diagnosed with early-onset dementia.
I have to say the author approached this topic in such a sensitive manner. While I’ve never personally experienced this situation, I’m sure many readers who have will appreciate how gently and realistically it’s written. It really helps you engage with and invest in her journey.

Then we have her boss – ‘Al’ aka Harrison, brother number two. He has his own trauma to contend with. We learn he has suppressed his emotions and memories surrounding his father’s sudden death and the circumstances around it.
As how many MMC’s go - he’s grumpy and reserved, the caretaker of friends and family, while carrying his own trust issues from previous failed relationships.
The characters themselves, especially the brothers, have such a strong and heartwarming bond. The community is quirky, supportive, and exactly what you’d hope for in a small-town romance.

Watching Delaney and Harrison navigate their troubles, both independently and together, as they slowly begin to open up, shows the power of healing through love, patience, and ultimately trusting that the other person will show up when it matters.

This is very much a small-town, one-night-stand, millionaire romance, and while it does tackle some difficult subjects, it remains a sweet, comforting, and heartwarming read.

What an amazing book !!!
When We Were Them by Finley Daniels is the second book in the Aron Falls series which explores romance at its very best set in a small town of Aron Falls. The series explores the stories of five brothers. Harrison is the second brother and this book is about his love life.

The plot is simple. Deleany and Harrison have a one night stand but soon find they are boss and employee. From the first chapter onwards the author engages us and we are invested in both of them getting together soon.

Deleany has an ailing mother and needs to care for her. Finances are a struggle along with the emotional toll on her as a caretaker. She takes up multiple jobs to meet her financial obligations.

Harrison has his own trauma in the shape of his father’s sudden death that he has suppressed. Along with that he also has trust issues due to a prior failed relationship and betrayal.

The book is set in Aron Falls, a small town with its quirky residents who support each other in times of need. The bond between the brothers with the background of their tragic loss and support they provide each other is heart warming to see.
Each of the brothers show up their own strength of character through the story. Layla (Harrison’s niece) is an adorable child who has a knack of bringing people together.

Certain difficult topics such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia are addressed with a very positive and hopeful approach. The author has still kept the story light hearted and comforting to read.

I would definitely recommend reading this book in the small town romance genre.
5* from me for the sweet romance as well as tackling difficult subjects with a positive approach.

Tropes:

Small town

🖤 𝔸ℝℂ ℝ𝔼𝕍𝕀𝔼𝕎 🖤

Book 2 in the Aron Falls Series and Finley… you had me in my feelings the entire time. I fell in love with Aron Falls back when we met Henry, Tillie, and their little one Layla (not only because that’s my daughter’s name 🤭), but Delaney and Harrison’s story? It was absolutely perfect.

The dedication alone tugged at my heart in ways I wasn’t expecting. I, too, wish I could’ve done more in those last few years.

Who would’ve thought a love story could begin with a one-night stand on the worst day of their lives? But for Delaney and Harrison… that’s exactly how it started.

Delaney is the primary caregiver for her mother, who is battling dementia. When caring for her at home is no longer possible, she has to place her in a facility—an emotional and financial burden that leaves her juggling multiple jobs just to stay afloat. She keeps her circle small, holds onto her pride, and refuses handouts… even if that means going without.

Then there’s Harrison. Grumpy, guarded, and a caretaker by nature. He’s silently battling the weight of his father’s death, carrying demons he doesn’t like to talk about. He’s terrified of letting anyone too close and even more afraid of letting his family down.

Watching these two broken, selfless souls slowly open up to one another was beautiful. Healing through love, through patience, through showing up—even when it’s hard. Read the book to find out how they get their HEA.

And what I adore most about this series is the town itself.
* I love how this town shows up for its people.
* The letters her mom wrote before her condition worsened.
* Girls’ nights out.
Harrison’s brothers staging an intervention.

* Delaney’s heart-to-hearts with Lydia (Harrison’s mom).

I cannot wait to see what the rest of this series brings.

From the dedication alone, I KNEW this book was going to make me cry… and yep, I was absolutely right.🥲 This story is emotional in so many ways, so definitely check the TWs before diving in, just in case some of the topics are triggering for you.

Now let’s talk about my favorite things!!!

- First of all: the uncle–niece relationship. I LOVED IT!! Like, actually obsessed. Layla and Uncle Harry FOREVER. 🤝🏼 Their dynamic is easily one of my favorite parts of the book (if not the favorite). Layla is 100% the star of this series and I’m beyond excited to see all her future shenanigans in the next books.

The sibling relationship was also so beautifully done. The way they support each other and show up during difficult moments felt so real and heartwarming.

Delaney’s relationship with her mom was another standout. It felt raw and authentic, and the author did such an amazing job handling such a delicate subject with so much care and humanity. This book touches on heavy topics, but it does so respectfully and thoughtfully. Definitely an emotional read, so prepare your heart.

And Harrison? The perfect book boyfriend!!! No notes. The way he takes care of the people he loves is UNMATCHED.

I can’t wait for book three, especially for Layla’s shenanigans as the official Aron family matchmaker. 🤭

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

This captivating romance begins on one of their worst nights. What starts as a no-strings-attached one-night stand—with fake names and a promise to walk away—leaves both craving more, defying their expectations.

Delaney has relocated to provide better care for her mother, who is battling dementia. She’s juggling multiple jobs to cover the mounting expenses, all while grappling with deep guilt and feelings of failure as a daughter who can’t do it all alone.

Harrison is determined not to let his family down again. He shoulders immense responsibility, doing whatever it takes to keep everyone afloat and protected.

Their paths cross again by a twist of fate at the same wedding, reigniting the spark from that unforgettable night—only for one of them to flee into the darkness.
Later, they discover they’re coworkers at the same company, sparking Harrison’s suspicion: Is this pure coincidence, or something more calculated? As they navigate the awkwardness and tension of their professional overlap, they slowly lower their guards, learning about each other—and themselves—in the process.

What emerges is a heartfelt journey of vulnerability, healing, and self-discovery. Maybe, just maybe, meeting when their defenses were down is exactly what they needed for a real shot at happily ever after.
A tender, emotional tale of second chances, family burdens, and finding love when you least expect it.

This book was so good. This author nailed it again with Delaney and Harrison's love story. Both were having the worst day and definitely wasn't looking to meet anyone in a bar much less have a one night stand but that's what happened. The next morning Delaney couldn't leave the hotel room quick enough and Harrison wanted more then a one night stand. First let me say I absolutely love Harrison's family and his niece, Layla is the best. Harrison is loyal and a true caretaker. He wants only the best for the ones he loves. Delaney is her mothers caretaker due to her having dementia and will do anything for her care to be the best. She is also very loyal, her only downfall is not accepting help from others. These two are brilliant together and I loved their love story. There were a few times I wanted to hit both of them over their heads but they redeemed themselves. This was definitely an emotional read one that I did need Kleenex for. I feel this author definitely portrayed what someone goes through with a loved one that has dementia very well. It is so sad. I can't imagine nor would I want to know how it would feel. God bless the ones that do. Besides being emotional, this book has a lot of angst and alpha tendencies, which by the way are fantastic. I truly enjoyed this book and can't wait for the future books. Highly recommend this story.

When We Were Them is a deeply emotional story about who we used to be, who we’ve become, and whether love can survive the space between those versions of ourselves.

Finley Daniels leans heavily into nostalgia and growth. The novel explores past choices, misunderstandings, and the bittersweet realization that sometimes timing — not love — is the real antagonist. The emotional tension feels mature and layered, especially as the characters confront their former selves and the lingering pull between them.

What makes this story resonate is the theme of identity. It asks an honest question: can two people who loved each other in the past still fit into each other’s present?

The chemistry isn’t loud — it’s simmering. It’s in the glances, the unsaid words, the memories that refuse to fade. The pacing allows space for reflection, making the emotional payoff feel earned.

If you love:
✔️ Second-chance romance
✔️ Emotional growth arcs
✔️ Nostalgic tension
✔️ “Right person, wrong time” themes

This one will absolutely hit you in the feelings.

Bittersweet, reflective, and emotionally resonant.

Delaney and Harrison start with one night that was supposed to stay just that. No names. No expectations. Just two people trying to escape the worst parts of their lives for a few hours. Of course, life has other plans.

When he turns out to be her new boss, the chemistry is still there, but now it’s layered with responsibility, pride, and everything they’re both carrying.

Delaney is juggling so much, especially with her mom’s early dementia. That part felt handled with care. It wasn’t there for drama. It felt real and heavy in a quiet way. You can feel how much she’s trying to hold everything together.

Harrison is more closed off than grumpy. He wants to take care of the people he loves, but he’s not great at letting anyone take care of him. Watching them both struggle with guilt and independence made the push and pull between them feel earned.

This is small town, boss/employee tension, one night to more, and a lot of heart underneath it all. It leans emotional without losing the romance.

Thank you to Finley Daniels and Epica Book PR for the ARC.

📖 Aron Fall Series #2

I LOVED everything about this book!!
💛 This is the second book in the Aron Fall series and it follows Harrison—the second brother—and whewww… his story was heavy, emotional, and absolutely beautiful.

Harrison is completely shut off from everyone, even his brothers, and the guilt he carries runs deep. 😭💔

Then we have Delaney, who is doing everything she can to help her family while carrying guilt of her own.

One night.

A random hotel bar. 🍸🔥

No names. No numbers. Just pure chemistry.

And then… weeks later their worlds collide again, and the sparks fly ALL over again. 😍✨

This story is filled with heart, love, healing, growth, and so much emotion. I sobbed pretty early on because it deals with a disease that is so close to my heart, and I felt every bit of Delaney’s pain. 💔😭

Before this one releases, make sure you read Henry’s story first (it’s just as amazing!) and then grab this one as soon as it’s out… you WON’T regret it! 💛📚

Advance Reader Copy

I love how the story starts with 2 strangers in a bar, on the worst nights of their respective lives, who aren't looking for anything, form temporary personas as they come together for a one night stand, that changes the courses of their lives going forward.

Harrison and Delaney both have their own stubborn traits and struggle to accept help, especially when the weight of their responsibilities add up. They also provide each other a much needed escape and peace from reality ever since they first met.

Much like the first book in the series, you can find, family bonding moments, a firecracker of a niece everyone falls in love with and one whom I believe will be matchmaker to many more couples of Aaron Falls. There is also a balance of humor and seriousness that keeps the reader engaged. Look forward to the next in the series, cause the just has to be more.

Harrison and Delaney’s love story is book two in this incredible series. Aron Falls. I have to say I expected this to be an emotional journey and it is and every bit of it is captured so well. Can these two go from one perfect night during a vulnerable time to capturing that same connection and chemistry in a real life setting? The struggle not to lose that and be that vulnerable again is just part of the journey you will take while reading this book. Delaney’s relationship with her mom Hattie is what I really connected with. The way these characters are immersed with Hattie’s early on set dementia diagnosis, is done with such care and realism. This book is such an emotional and excellent read. Finely Daniels blew me away with this read and I can not recommend this book and this series enough.

Thank you @romance_author_finley_daniels for another heartwarming book.

I’m so happy that I got to beta-read another one of Finley’s books. I always enjoy Finley’s writing and this book was no exception.

There was great chemistry between the two MCs from the beginning and I enjoyed seeing them give in to each other.
I love the small town vibes - Finley does them very well - and there’s a lot of great side characters.

FMC is very independent and MMC just wants to take care of her, which generates a bit of tension between them.

There are some heavy subjects in this book and it was an emotional journey. ❤️

What to expect from this book:
❤️One night stand to lovers
❤️Workplace romance
❤️Grumpy boss x assistant
❤️Millionaire MMC
❤️FMC has mom with Alzheimer’s
❤️Found family
❤️Grief/healing

I loved this book!! I was lucky enough to receive an ARC and I am so happy I did. I had just finished When We Were More (Aaron Falls #1) and I didn’t think anything could compare to Henry and Tillie but boy was I wrong. Uncle Harry and Delaneys story was funny, heart warming and emotional. Finley Daniels has a way to making you fell every emotion the characters are feeling. It was so refreshing to have a steamy romance that also had a plot that you were excited to read. I can’t wait for book 3. Yea, there better be a book 3! I’m so in love with these characters and I’m pretty sure Finley dropped us a hit of what’s to come and I’m so excited!!!

Loved the way the sensitive subjects were handled for both MCs—the way it was portrayed, how it was discussed with the other characters, and how they were both struggling alone—it was heartbreaking.

Harrison and Delaney were both stubborn in their own ways and struggled to accept help from others, as they always felt like they had to carry the weight of their responsibilities on their own. They were an escape from reality when they first met, and then become something more.

Same as the first book of the series, there was family bonding moments, hilarious nosey characters, and a spunky little girl whom everyone falls in love with.

When We Were Them is a heartfelt story of instant chemistry, found family, and learning to heal. I really enjoyed Harrison and Delaney's story. Both characters had some major things that they needed to work through and heal from. I think the only thing I didn't love about the book was the pacing felt a little slow at times, especially in the beginning.

It is the second book in an inter-connected series, but I was able to read it as a standalone. I'll definitely go back and read the first book, and I want to follow this series as it grows.

Thank you so much to Epica Books PR for the ARC. This has been my voluntary review.

I truly don’t know where to begin, this book is one of the best books I’ve read so far this year, I could not put it down!! It was sweet, spicy, heartwarming and tear jerking all wrapped into one amazing story. As someone who has felt like they’ve let a loved-one down in their time of need, I can relate to the immense guilt that both Delaney and Harrison felt. This book brought me to tears but also helped heal some of my grief. I highly recommend reading it and I cannot wait for the next one!!!

I cried during this book watching her go through what she did and then meeting Layla Harrison’s niece made my day, she stole the book for me and I wanted to kick his butt for what he did near the end of the book but he did make up for and I’m so glad that they talked it out and got their happily every after

This was an emotional story, both in view of Delaney’s current “situation” and Harrison’s trauma from years ago.

The overarching theme throughout the story might be difficult for some readers…it hits very close to home. Ms. Daniels addresses something many of us have faced or will be facing with compassion and understanding.

The touching kindness of the characters shines through showing support for Delaney and Harrison, helping them find their way during very difficult times.

Another simply amazing story from Finley Daniels! My heart went out to Delaney from the very beginning. She worked so hard to care for her Momma. The illness was respectfully written and pulled at your heart. Harrison was the perfect grumpy, thank goodness Layla was always there to lighten him up. For the record, this series would be the same without Layla and Ruthie! Thank you Finley for creating an escape through your writing....

I loved the found family and the support everyone showed each other. There were some heavy topics and traumas, but it was written so beautifully and tastefully. When We Were Them feels like running into somebody from a past life and realizing the feelings didn’t disappear… they just got packed away. It’s heavy on history—little moments, old habits, the stuff that comes back the second they’re in the same space again. The romance is quiet but intense, more looks and tension than big speeches, and it has that soft ache the whole way through.

ARC Review!

I loved how the way this book took you on a bit of an emotional rollercoaster with Delaney and Harrison. I could rave about the main characters in this and the growth the showed accepting and helping eachother even when they didn’t want to accept it, however we need to discuss the real star of this book. Layla. She is a firecracker and I adored her additions to this story. To anyone wondering who Layla is, go read the book and find out. You’ll love it.
