About the author

Karl Georg Büchner was a German dramatist and writer of prose. He was the brother of physician and philosopher Ludwig Büchner. Georg Büchner's talent is generally held in great esteem in Germany. It is widely believed that, but for his early death, he might have attained the significance of such central German literary figures as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller.

"Leonce und Lena" is the humorous counterpart to "Woyzeck". Both dramas are about exposing the ruling class with all its lack of empathy, bigotry and complacency. While in "Woyzeck" this is demonstrated by the physical and psychological destruction of the title character, in "Leonce und Lena" the focus is on the authorities themselves. Leonce, the prince who is to be married to the princess Lena and who, because of his boredom, doesn't really know what to do with his life, stands in for this.

But between all the puns, masquerades and absurdities, an existential insecurity shines through again and again, giving the drama its depth: "I think there are people who are unhappy, incurable, just because they are." (Lena)

In the cold reality, romantic reveries perish.

-intertextuelle Bezüge (bes. deutlich sind dabei Shakespeare (Wie es euch gefällt, Romeo & Julia, Hamlet), Bibel und Philosophen (Epikur, Descartes, etc.)),
-Kritik am Herrschertum (besonders stark in den Szenen mit dem König),
-Melancholie
-und die Thematik der Langweile (einfach geniale Umsetzung des Themas! Musste hier neben den Wortspielen am meisten lachen😊🔥)

The king wants to hand over his sceptre to his son and so he should also marry, but Leonce changes his mind and flees. Meanwhile, he meets a beautiful woman, Lena, the princess he should have married. The two marry in cognitor, to the king's delight. As in his other work, he again delights with beautiful language and this time also with wit and lightness.

Zwei Menschen, die ihre Existenz in einer rigiden Gesellschaftsstruktur nicht länger aushalten und nur durch ihre Flucht wieder zusammenfinden. Das sie dadurch wieder in ebendieser Gesellschaftsstruktur ist dann zweitrangig, weil sie die wahre Liebe gefunden haben.

Ein Stern extra für diesen Roast: "Warum reißen Sie, Geehrtester, das Maul so weit auf, dass Sie einem ein Loch in die Aussicht machen?"

Einer meiner Lieblinge meiner gewählten Maturbücher. Finde das Drama immer noch sehr gut, diese konfusen irrwitzigen Wortspiele sind unglaublich. Kurz, knackig, gut.

Spöttisch und mit beißender Ironie zerlegt Büchner in dieser Farce sowohl die Gattungskonventionen des Lustspiels als auch die Ständegesellschaft. Die Handlung ist eigentlich völlig nebensächlich, ein melancholisch-heiteres Plotrumoren mit zahlreichen Wendungen, Verwechslungen und dem obligatorischen Happy End. Auch stilistisch ist das Stück ambig: parodistisch, zitatreich, durchsetzt mit zahllosen Wortspielen auf der einen Seite, eine feine Balance zwischen Ernsthaftigkeit und Humor bewahrend auf der anderen. Die eigentümlich zu lesende Mischung von Büchnertypischer Kritik an der hinterwäldlerischen Kleinstaatelei und der geistlosen Herrschaft des Adels und dem gewollten Genrekitsch des Lustspiels begeistert, zumal immer wieder Momente unverstellter Schönheit oder Geistesschärfe hervorblitzen.
Statt das nächste mittelmäßige Netflix-Comedyspecial anzusehen, lieber diese leichtfüßige, pointenreiche und intelligente Komödie Büchners lesen.

Alternative title: Weltschmerz is stupid

Very short, fun play, on the surface it's a romantic comedy, underneath, it's making fun of pretty much everything. The king is an idiotic fool who sets his own mood by edicts ("Let it be known that today I shall be happy", loose translation from me). Leonce is a failed romantic, he tries to kill himself only to be stopped by his servant Valerio, for which Leonce berates him that it would have been such a beautiful suicide and now he ruined the moment. Lena, who's an "honest" romantic, she doesn't try to kill herself, she just wants to run away. And of course, since this is making fun of German Romanticism, all the improbable "romantic" things happen all of the time.

I don't know how well this fares in English translations, half of the dialogue is amazing Wortwitz

Recommended for: People who think that Werther was alright

i read this a year ago and the only thing i remember was that this is romeo and juliette but on crack AND it has a funny ass ending (so basically a fanfic rendition of r&j)

Radi se o drami u užem smislu, svojevrsnoj romantičarskoj farsi. Podsjeća na kasne fantazofske Shakespearove romance.
Objelodanjena prvi put 1838.
Jezik je izrazito vižljast, ironičan, aluzivan, zločest i životan. Buchner nije od jučer.
Snažna sličnost s avangardnim teatrom se putem apsurda i sadržajne nelogičnosti ogledava u sljedećem primjeru:
"Leonce: Recite najvišoj volji da ću ja učiniti sve osim onoga što ću izostaviti, ali što u svakom slučaju neće biti mnogo, koliko bi bilo bar još jednom toliko."
Ovo nije jedini primjer toga, gotovo na svakoj stranici se mgu naići takvi pasusi teksta. Dakako, ovakve igre riječi se javljaju kroz cijelo novovjekovlje, no jednostavno morate pročitati cjelokupnu dramu da shvatite dvadesetostoljetnost.
Slavljenje uživanja i dubinska filozofična sponzaja da se čovjek rodio umoran i živi da se odmara je utkana u sljedeća dva citata:
"V: Ja ne znam što biste vi htjeli ali meni je baš dobro pri duši. Sunce sija kao gostionička firma, a plameni oblaci iznad toga kao natpis -Gostionica kod Zlatnog sunca-, Zemlja i voda ispod toga su poput stola po kojem je proliveno vino, a mi ležimo na tome kao igraće karte kojima su Bog i đavo iz dosade htjeli razbiti jednu partiju. Pri tome ste Vi kralj, ja žandar, fali nam, dakle, samo dama, jedna lijepa dama s velikim licitarskim srcem na grudima i jednimn moćnim tulipanom u koji sentimentalno može potonuti i duga visina."
"V: A ja ću biti državni ministar i donijet ću dekret po kojem će svaki onaj ko sebi žuljeve na rukama napravi biti stavljen pod starateljstvo, a onaj ko pretjera radeći biti kriminalistički gonjen, svako ko se hvali da hljeb svoj jede u znoju lica svog bit će proglašen ludim i opasnim po ljudsko društvo; a mi ćemo leći u hlad i moliti Boga za makarone, bostan i smokve, za muzikalna grla, klasična tijela i komotnu religiju.."
Drugi citat iznosi u biti viziju Vatroslavije, zemlje odmaranja i hranjenja.

Bisschen sehr alberne aber abgründige und bittere Satire auf eine dem Tode geweihte, deutsche feudale Kleinstaaterei, in der sich die Herrschenden zu Tode langweilen und verblöden, während sie die Massen quälen. Liest sich ein bisschen wie Heine, aber ohne dessen Witz. Dafür aber hinter der albernen Oberfläche sehr viel düsterer.

Besonders gefallen hat mir die Parodie auf den deutschen Philosophenkönig, der sinnentleert in den Begriffen des deutschen Idealismus schwafelt.

Iwie so witzig geschrieben und so modern obwohl es Klassik ist. Muss zugeben ich habe es als Hörspiel gehört, aber war relativ kurz.

Ein absolut geniales Stück! Ich wusste nicht, wie viel ich an diesem Juwel verpasst hatte. Eine wunderbare Kritik an allem, was Aristokratie und Autokratie angeblich so unersetzlich macht. Mit unglaublich viel Witz und Ironie und zwischendurch auch einmal mit wunderschönen Worten. Diese Stück trifft - obwohl so alt - absolut den Nerv der Zeit. Ich schwelge in deiner rastlosen Langeweile, Leonce.

Büchner's Leonce und Lena might not be that funny anymore for today audiences: it is mostly a concoction out of quotations from and references to works by Shakespeare, Musset, Brentano and others, which aren't current affairs anymore for modern audiences. This makes readers struggle with the text, and a critical commentary is always very useful when trying to really understand what's behind the time-stricken surface. On the other hand, and although Büchner's style in this one might be at its most shabby, the play manages to raise profound, sometimes paradoxical questions about the causes of ennui and Weltschmerz and how they can sometimes be the very drive of human existence: people believing they're making their own choices when they're only taking the best chance on their lack of real interest in life and on their cluelessness about what one's supposed to do with it. Leonce is laughing-stock and tragic figure at the same time and now and then he lets the reader grasp a little of Büchner's own voice and existential anguish speaking through his character. Büchner submitted this play to a comedy competition in order to get some money; he wrote it in around 3 weeks; few works have gotten so much from so little time-investment.
