This start to a new trilogy was an exciting adventure that left me wanting more. Glen Dahlgren's previous stories set the stage nicely, introducing us to this world of Order and Chaos, compelling mortals, and powerful Gods. The Wrath of Order tells a story that uncovers new mysteries and previously undiscovered challenges that went unexplored in the previous installments. This tale includes many of our favorite characters from the previous books, introduces new people and perspectives, and even throws in some surprising twists that were absolutely worth the wait.

I am glad that the book contains a short recap of the events that lead up to the start of this story. It can be a great help for anyone who has gone a long time between readings or is completely new to the Chronicles of Chaos. This way, new readers don't feel too overwhelmed by diving straight into the book.

The ending of The Wrath of Order was satisfying but also left several hints and cliffhangers that make me ready for the next chapter in the series. Knowing Glen Dahlgren's previous successes, I can't wait for the answers that will be revealed in the next book!

Here it is at last—the book I once feared might never be written.

When Glen Dahlgren concluded his Chronicles of Chaos with a bang, I was thrilled. He had not only met but surpassed my expectations, delivering a spectacular ending to the series. But with that, I also had to say goodbye to a world unlike any other, and to characters who had come to feel like real, living people.

It's fortunate that he decided to continue exploring this world. And now, he’s gone and raised the stakes even further. The Wrath of Order picks up four years after the events of The Realm of Gods and takes its time immersing us in this transformed world. How are people adapting to the new reality? What alliances are emerging—and what rivalries?

Dahlgren introduces compelling new characters without neglecting the familiar ones whose journeys are so close to my heart. And through it all, the story unfolds with a natural grace. There are no contrived twists, no forced revelations—everything arises organically from the world itself.

Because this world is real. And Glen Dahlgren remains its masterful chronicler.

Glen Dahlgren has delivered another thrilling installment with "The Wrath of Order," a book that is one exciting adventure after another. Fans of his previous stories will be delighted to revisit familiar faces, whose appearances are balanced by the engaging introduction of new characters. What makes this entry particularly satisfying is Dahlgren's ability to continue expanding the world without compromising the integrity of the established world set forth in earlier books. "The Wrath of Order" compellingly continues the overarching saga, thrillingly setting the stage for future journeys, and leaving the reader eagerly anticipating the next chapter in this tale.

Have you ever been to a world that you loved, but the story ended? Yes, you could always go back to reread and experience those adventures again, this time armed with the knowledge and wisdom of experience. But, what if I told you that the author, the creator of this favourite world, provided new adventures? Adventures that built on what came before? You would be thrilled, yes?
Certainly, I was when Glen Dahlgren announced that there would be more adventures in his world, following off of the Chaos trilogy.
Now, I would absolutely recommend reading the Chaos trilogy before you step into this new story arc, because if you do not, you will absolutely be lost. However, if you have read the Chaos trilogy but don’t quite remember all the details, never fear! The author has helpfully included a “Previously On” section at the front of the book which recaps all the relevant details. I love these recaps and wish more authors included them because they are so helpful.
The story begins with Eve. Last we saw her, she was young and had just, ah, changed the face of the world. More or less. Now, she’s fifteen, has been working and learning at Charity, and is trying to help Myra create something better out of the ashes of what came before. But, as with all things, there is resistance. The temples may have lost their connections to their gods, but they don’t want to lose the power that they had over the faithless. And they certainly don’t want to deal with the Harbingers of Chaos, whose duty has been to advocate for the faithless. Myra, Head Priestess of Charity, calls a conclave of all the temples.
And then, things go terribly wrong.
Now, Eve must work with a goddess of Order as she navigates the ever-dangerous Dreaming to try and find Galen and stop the threats that are beginning to cross from the Dreaming into the world once more.
This story picks up, I think, at precisely the perfect spot. The first story arc is complete, but the characters aren’t done. Yet the space between the two series gives each character the time to grow and recover that they need before they face these new threats. I especially liked seeing Eve grow and take on more of a leadership position with her friends and the children of the orphanage. It was a side to her not seen before, and it rounds out her character spectacularly.
I also liked the fact that she had to work with a goddess of Order, when previously that was almost impossible to fathom. That touch of irony added a level of drama and growth to the story that really pushed the boundaries of who could be considered “good” or “bad” in this world. I love nuance like that, when the author paints everything in shades of grey where previously there was only black or white.
The prose itself flows very nicely and is a perfect read for people of all ages. There is nothing too intricate or complex to bog down the story, and it becomes easy to lose oneself in the world rather than the words. A great way to read, indeed.
My only complaint for this book is…well, trying to avoid spoilers as much as possible, the absolute devastation that came with some of the particular scenes involving particular characters’ story arcs getting, ah, truncated. To the author, I say: No! How could you?! Yes, it fit with the story and provided emotional fuel to the various players to move forward, but…but…Waaaaa!
Anyways, an excellent read, as always, and I look forward to the next book. (With a cliffhanger like that, how could I not?)

The Wrath of Order is the first entry in Dahlgren's new trilogy, taking place in the same world and following the events of his Chaos trilogy*.

I fell in love with the first trilogy* because of the author's unique and thought-provoking takes on themes of family, obligation, fervor, creativity, truth, and of course Order vs. Chaos. I fell in love with the first trilogy* because of characters who feel real, who I have grown to honestly care about. I fell in love with the first trilogy* because of storytelling that was so vivid that I can still replay scenes in my memory as if I was watching a movie.

"But, hey," I hear you saying, "What about the new trilogy, the new book? Aren't you supposed to be reviewing that?"
Wow, so rude! I was just getting to that!

I'll start by describing what's different: First, this is Eve's story, not Galen's. (Don't worry, Galen is still involved, and still monumentally important.) Second, you'll meet new characters and spend more time with characters you know but be prepared for surprises. When circumstances change, allies may become adversaries. People you thought you understood may be capable of things you never expected. And sometimes, clearly delineated enemies may discover that the delineations aren't as clear as they thought.

What hasn't changed is the relentless action, the incredible set-pieces, the unexpected twists. (and some of those twists hit hard). What hasn't changed are smart characters going up against smart antagonists and you never know who is going to end up on top. What hasn't changed is the depth of characters, in ways that are both touching and horrifying. What hasn't changed is the incredible vividness of Dahlgren's storytelling.
(Well, actually things are even more vivid, and I just can't get some of these scenes out of my head. The author must have some deep-seated trauma around chains, or at the very least has given me some. chains on toys, chains on ships, chains on gods. I guess there are some friendly dumbwaiter chains, mentioned here only to make my reporting feel fair and balanced.)

This story also expands the universe. At the end of the first trilogy*, I felt like I had a solid understanding of this world and the forces that drive it. That was important in satisfyingly wrapping up the trilogy* Now I know that I had barely broken the surface, and I am so eager to continue to explore the depths of these worlds and begin to discover what's _really_ going on here, what Order and Chaos _really_ are, and what it means for the people I have grown to love.
Oof, and there are some tough betrayals. Tough, tough betrayals. I'm still fuming.
All of this adds up to make The Wrath of Order my favorite book in this universe so far! I highly recommend it.

*look, we all know it's more than a trilogy be we'll all just have to agree to keep calling it that.

Finally! Hard to imagine wanting the next book when the last closed off so well, but the Wrath of Order picks up 4 years after the ending of the Realm of Gods in such a stemless way. I truly can say that Dahlgren is a master of a story growing with his characters. Through Galen's, and now Eve's, story that growth and maturity has been incorporated in a way that you completely believe that you've watched children grow in front of your eyes.

The beginning recap is perfect for those who may not be ready to dive into the trilogy first. But I highly suggest you do read the trilogy and the prequel book before to full appreciate the characters (and become very attached to fan favorites!)

Absolutely a story that has you going "just one more chapter" over and over. As Myra sets out to bring peace to the world after the disappearance of all Gods of order (or so it seems) the battle between the faithless and the priests continue on to a boiling point where it's difficult to image peace being an option. In parallel to this, Eve finds herself with an unlikely partner in a journey through the dreaming that will leave her with more questions than answers.

An incredible bang to continue off such a well written and beloved trilogy. So many authors keep stories going until they've beaten any remaining good idea with a very boring stick. But not Dahlgren. This story is captivating and it's NEW! Your favorite characters have returned here but they face new battles that not all will walk away from.

Absolutely a must read, and maybe even a binge read. I hated putting this story down, as it's so rare to find a story that doesn't have boring lulls in the story!

The Wrath of Order, the next book in the Chronicle of Chaos series by Glen Dahlgren, will publish on October 31. I was lucky enough to be a prereader. I’ve read every book in the series from the beginning and love this book most of all. I know I say that about every book in this series, but this one takes all the greatness of the other books and gives even more. Dahlgren deserves his own temple as the god of fantasy writing. His worlds ring with realism, and his characters walk off the pages into your heart and soul.
Dahlgren combines mystery and suspense and develops a beautiful tapestry of history throughout his fantasy worlds. I cheered at seeing some of my favorite characters from previous books rematerialize to continue their epic journeys. New characters, friends, and foes blend seamlessly into this enduring fable of good vs evil, where the line between them is often surprising.
As an over-60 reader, I have to admit that fantasy is not my go-to genre for reading, but these books really span across the ages. I especially like the positive themes of family, friendship, and fellowship. They are books I can read and relate to with my 14-year-old grandson. He loves them like I do. I know what he will be getting for Christmas this year!

This is the first book in a new trilogy that follows the Chaos trilogy, and the best book yet in the series. It’s a nail-biter, a rollercoaster ride with startling ups and downs, and clever twists and turns. The story follows three favorite characters – Eve, Galen, and Myra – as they find themselves faced with more and more formidable obstacles. Dahlgren’s characters face their fears and overcome their trials with wits and cleverness. Eve is the driving force as she sets out to find Galen, lost in the Dreaming, and her quest sets a complex series of events into motion that includes teaming up with a Goddess and planning a rescue from the worst prison ever built by the priests of War. Myra sets out to bring peace between the priests and the faithless that were once their slaves, only to have events spiral out of her control. And Galen, with Eve’s help, goes up against the truly dangerous God of Evil.

Everything is beautifully set up for the next book and I can’t wait to read it.

More than once while reading this book I gasped out loud, unable to believe what had happened. Author Glen Dahlgren has once again produced a story with relentless action and stunning twists. But this YA fantasy is more than that. I loved how it built on the world that I’d come to love in the earlier trilogy but took us to new places. Familiar characters have grown and show us new strengths and new failings. And the author explores themes of family and obligation, order and chaos in new and fresh ways. It’s always a challenge for an author to keep the momentum going as a series progresses. This one doesn’t slow down at all. If you haven’t read the earlier books, you’ll need to or you won’t understand what’s happening. But if you love YA fantasy, this is a tale you shouldn’t miss.

Once again, Glen Dahlgren takes us back to the world he created in Child of Chaos. The book is a great read, fast-paced without seeming to rush, and the action keeps you engaged in the story without ever going really over the top.

One thing I noticed in particular in this book is that the point-of-view changes have become masterful. When it switches, your response is "No, I want to know more!" but then when we return to that part of the story later on, you have the same reaction to leaving the other characters you were following.

One note I'd like to add to any prospective new readers - please start with Child of Chaos. The way these books are written, they are intended to be read in order and will make the most sense when read that way.

Wrath of Order is a book that is so good, readers will find it impossible to put down. I am incredibly fortunate to have been chosen to pre-read this book, which allows me to share with others how great it is. The characters feel so real. The setting of this world is just pure amazing. Readers who have read the other books will find this a satisfying extension to the story and will want more. Even standalone, it is a great story that readers of all ages will enjoy.

This summary grabbed me from the start. The tension between familiar bonds and unimaginable power is intense, and the stakes feel incredibly high. I love the mix of prophecy, dreams, and the battle between Order and Chaos. It left me curious and eager to see how Eve and Galen face such overwhelming odds.

Review by 13yo son:

As good as the other books. It was a good way to continue the story. Will definitely read the next one.

Mom update: He obsessively read this book so it must have been good. He does say there is a lot of death, but otherwise felt it was appropriate for a young teenage reader.

The Wrath of Order is the fifth book set in the Chronicles of Chaos story world.

This is everything I've come to love and expect for a Glen Dahlgren novel.

The danger is real. The stakes are high, and no retuning character is safe.

If you enjoyed the happy ending at the end of The Realm of the Gods, then congrats, you can stop there and be happy.

But if you closed that book and already missed the characters of Eve and Galen, then good news... they're back--but so are the Gods of Order.

While the ending is very clear that there will be more, it's also not a horrendous cliffhanger.

Even so I can't wait to get my hands on the next one.
