Straighten your step, keep your tongue more still, for loose talk bends another’s will.
I know the paths your feet have gone—tread wisely now, ere trust is gone.

Angus MacKay thought he had left danger behind. With a good position, a growing family, and a quiet life in Pennsylvania, the colonies seemed to hold great promise.

But whispers of rebellion spread across the frontier, secret societies plot in back rooms, and friends demand he join their cause. Having witnessed the result of open rebellion, Angus tries to remain neutral—until he agrees to deliver one coded message. Where was the harm in that?

When the recipient turns up dead and Angus is accused, he and Joel find themselves caught in a web of spies, suspicion, and betrayal. In a world where no one can be trusted, survival may demand more than silence.

Set in the uneasy years between the Boston Tea Party and Lexington and Concord, all is far from quiet in the American Colonies. The MacKay Mysteries continue with danger, deception, and the hidden struggles of a people on the brink of war.

I must confess I'm biased. I have five ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War, including one who served on the personal bodyguard of George Washington. Thus, I'm a sucker for historical fiction set during that period.

That said, this series is particularly well written. Is started off on the cozy side of mystery, but it has grown more suspenseful and intense as it has gone along, which I like.

The hero, Angus MacKay, is a bit like a Scottish Sherlock Holmes--that is, an amateur sleuth rather than a professional detective--but he's a plucky, clever fellow who is easy to root for. In Book 4, we are closer to the war than ever before, and tensions in the colonies are already high when Angus stumbles across another murder victim. This time, he finds himself under suspicion in the context of the patriot vs. loyalist debate that was raging at that moment.

What really stands out here is the way this author steeps you in authentic period details of the time without bogging down the story. If you like historical fiction, you can't go wrong with this series.

In this fourth installment of The Mackay Mysteries, Angus again finds himself involved in a murder, but this time it's a question of whether or not the man's political affiliations contributed to his murder. Was he a patriot or a loyalist? And which side does Angus align with?

Lots of twists and turns here and the reemergence of old friends make this a very enjoyable read.

I highly recommend Traitor in the Lake to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.
