Betrayed, bound and resurrected—can a soul-forged survivor reclaim her humanity before time runs out?

Harper “House” has endured the impossible. Once Hestia, a formidable paper mage, she trusted the wrong man and lost her magic torn away, her soul sealed into brick. For 162 years she has existed as a sentient house, hiding from those who’d destroy her while sheltering society’s outcasts.

Watching. Waiting. Until one reckless choice tears her prison apart.

Human again, Harper must navigate a world determined to cage or kill her. The Ministry of Magic hunts her. The Vampire Court schemes to silence her. Shifter packs prowl, terrified of the secrets she keeps. Then there’s the one sent to capture her—a frustratingly charming enemy who might just become her greatest ally.

Harper isn’t just a survivor; she is magic reborn—and she’s done playing nice.

Bitten by Magic is the spellbinding third standalone book in The Bitten Chronicles urban fantasy series. If you love resilient older heroines, slow-burn romance, found family, and action-packed suspense, you’ll adore Brogan Thomas’s explosive finale.

Brogan Thomas

Brogan lives in Ireland with her husband and their eleven furry children: five furry minions of darkness (aka the cats), four hellhounds (the dogs), and two traditional unicorns (fat, hairy Irish cobs).

In 2019 she embraced her craziness by writing about the imaginary people that live in her head. Her first love is her husband followed by her number-one favourite furry child Bob the cob, then reading. When not reading or writing, she can be found knee-deep in horse poo and fur while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.

Ms. Thomas does it again! She crafted another amazing story that has a fantastical FMC, puts me through some emotional damage, then on the other side I am always amazed and grateful at her ability to tell a phenomenal story.

House/Harper was used in forbidden soul magic one hundred and sixty-two years ago, they brutally sealed her soul and turned her into a sentient house. Her rage guided her for years until she found a purpose in helping others. Recently she has done some illegal magic of her own and drawn the attention of The Hunter. When the magic users come for her, in her attempt flee so she isn't captured, she turns up in a very unexpected place but not as House. With that escape she is given the thing she thought she wouldn't see again, a body.
Impossibly talented and magically strong, she now must face Lander, the Hunter, as well as others who see her as the magical boogeyman. But Harper only wants to live in peace, and when that is threatened what is a paper mage to do but fight back.

I loved House's full story and that this story crossed her full life span until current day. I loved the way the author wove the previous characters from the other two books origin stories into Harper's story. It was beautiful to see old friends and witness the love and bonds these women all shared. Brogans ability to write strong, independent, brave woman is one of my favorite things about her books and this one is top level. I am sad to leave the series, but so grateful for a beautiful ending for the ever selfless House/Harper.

"Keeping your cool is a different sort of power. People forget being polite, kind, and unbothered does not make you weak; it keeps the power where it belongs—with you."

My sucker punch queen is back! In full force! Within the first few pages I can already hear the theme song to Psycho or Jaws accompanying the words before me, I'm screaming in my head "No! Don't! Stop!" But, alas no one can hear me. There's no "frog, pot, boil" thing, this is all in from the onset. Hestia Howard is a paper mage, a strong one, which causes resentment from her revolting husband, which leads to.....no, I won't say, suffice to say, my stomach turned on itself at what Hestia goes through. I loved Hestia so much, she may be down but she's hardly out, she fights, she twists as much as she can, but she's still trapped, she's still alone and when she "comes to", revenge is on her mind. In all honesty, as gory as I might sound, I couldn't help but clap my hands in glee at Hestia's revenge, even as she says, "Perhaps I should care that I am becoming the villain, but I do not. Better villain than victim. Survival becomes habit—then pleasure. I am what they made me." So freaking fitting!

As with all of Brogan characters, I adore Mrs Beattie, otherwise known as Beryl! Hestia's middle aged neighbour, human, unassuming but deadly. Yep, she's a fierce Vampire Hunter, with a fetish for sewing. I loved finding out more about her, how it all began. In fact, I loved finding out how IT ALL began, House and co! Her matter of fact attitude evoked smile after smile from me, just hearing her is a hoot. The first friend House has had in over a century. When a young girl, Harriet, stumbles into her domain, after being chased, everything changes for Hestia. I wanted to sob from these simple yet very profound words Hestia uttered, "I can be a home." And again with, "For the first time in an age, I feel like refuge, and for the first time in just as long, I feel like myself." And again as House makes"friends", she's no longer alone, she's loved, she's accepted. Brogan's prose is just that, nothing convoluted, just stated, simply divinely penned, to draw the breath from my lungs.

Uggghhh! Lander Kane! The biggest bane of Hestia's life, is unrelenting. He attacks and attacks and attacks, forcing Hestia to flee. But the outcome of her fleeing, turns into a very unexpected result. Lander is a counsellor for The Ministry of Magic, does all their dirty work. NOT my favourite person from previous books and definitely shaping up to be just as loathsome in this book. He made me want to puke all over him in the previous books but, yes, you guessed right, Brogan peels away at the layers and what she exposes is the antithesis of what she's portrayed. She catches me out all the times with twisting a character, from smelly to deliciously aromatic! Well, not all, there's Meredith...

"Everyone is a stranger—until they are not. Sometimes we help strangers because it is the right thing to do. It makes us the best kind of human.” is one of the many realisations that settled on Harper. Sure, it only took over a century and a half but her values are sound. She is sound. Hell, she's honest to a fault and when she discloses EVERYTHING, I wasn't sure whether to groan or cheer. Brogan consistently does the inconsistent, she plays me like a fiddle, every note she twangs, has purpose and, like attending a maestro concerto, I let it wash over me, delighting in the drama of her tune. And, within that drama, she spun the most exquisitely touching moments that reduced me to tears. Happy tears. Warming tears. Tears produced by the love pouring out through the tale, for Harper but penetrating me just as deeply. This found family is MY found family! The transformation from Hestia to House to Harper is seamless, fitting, riveting and heartwrenchingly heartwarming, yes, THATS a Brogan talent of note! Facing who she is, what she is, she acknowledges that some might not get her, might be afraid of her powers, which just grow and grow and grow. "I have been a woman, a monster, a building, an anomaly. The Assembly stared at me like I was a bomb that might go off."

I absolutely loved those final scenes, the friends who rally around Hestia/House/Harper, all the awws with all the tension, hits right into the soul. Brogan marries the dark with the light, blending it flawlessly, elegantly, with hope as the binding factor, to produce a magically beautiful, traumatic, yet uplifting tale. The slow burn romance, unexpectedly touching, paint the perfect picture of those drawn to one another against all odds. Brogan casts a light on subservient yet strong women, who rise above the bias, the pain, the abuse. I always thought Brogan's magic system was super cool but she upped her coolness to the stratosphere! Who would have thought to create a paper mage? Not only that, who would have thought to give them magic and powers, where a simple sheet of paper is so deadly? Where a single sheet of paper can become virtually anything in the hands of a paper mage? Why, Brogan of course! She even introduces the coolest raven, Sneak Thief, aka Arthur. Although these are all standalones, characters from previous books pop up, adding to my reading pleasure. This is a series I highly recommend, this is an author I can't get enough of.

I do confess to my heart squeezing a bit painfully and in the same moment fill with love and warmth at the introduction of Jilleen as a fierce character, so beautiful a tribute to a very beautiful soul sadly departed.

Absolutely beautiful book, and a stunning series conclusion. Harper is a haunting character and I'm so happy she finally found her peace. I loved the first two books but this book is on a whole other level.

A few points I did want to talk about so will hide them as spoilers.

I hope there are more books set in this world, as I would like to see a certain vampire slayer gain her happy ending...

Sorry for the long review but this was easily one of my fave books released so far this year, it is so wonderful to read an intelligent, well-crafted story with an iconic female lead.

Hestia Howard has a bitter pill to swallow: someone close betrayed her, and now she’s a sentient house. Over the years, she nearly loses track of who she is—until someone in need runs by. Guided by an instinct she thought was gone, Hestia becomes a refuge. But the world has changed, and people have begun noticing a few things. A councilor knows she’s an anomaly now, and she can’t be certain whether he wants to understand, control, or destroy her. When an attack comes while she’s already weakened, it leads to the impossible—rewriting the whole game.

I’ve been reading Brogan Thomas for several years and have been waiting for this book, dying of curiosity to see how she would plot it.

Bitten by Magic is daring, weaving together multiple time periods and mini-stories within the larger narrative while still balancing the core plot. It does require active engagement from the reader, but that structure feels like the only way to tell House’s story properly.

Hestia, though powerful, strikes me as unfinished and unsatisfied. She just hasn’t realized she wasn’t really living. When she becomes House, she’s forced to be cunning, quick, and eventually make some very hard choices. In an ironic twist, being unmade as a human and turned into a house gives her the depth she once lacked.

There are many compelling characters in this story—Beryl, Harriet, Lark, Winifred, and Lander. Snack Thief is a personal favorite. I would have enjoyed a little more distinction from Dayna, but overall, this is a complicated and well-balanced cast.

The plot is carefully seeded, giving us just enough information for the big reveal to feel earned. With so much of the book dedicated to House’s history, it’s impressive how much story is still packed into the present-day narrative. It almost feels churlish to say so, but I would have enjoyed a few more clues about certain characters’ motivations. Even so, this is a craft story in the best sense: we can see how the pieces fit together, and all the moving parts work beautifully. Although ambitious, Bitten by Magic lands.

Emotionally, I was woefully unprepared for this story. I don’t usually expect urban or contemporary fantasy to hit that hard, but I actually cried in a couple spots. It’s a little bizarre how much I related to a house!

Bitten by Magic is an engaging addition to the Bitten Chronicles, perfectly on-brand for Brogan Thomas and delivering on the promise woven into the previous stories. It has warmth, charm, humor, action, and romance—so good. For newcomers, I recommend starting with Bitten Shifter to get the full story.

Harper "House" has been imprisoned in a house for 200 years. Unwillingly turned into a sentient magical house, she has made herself a haven for magicals who need protecting. When Magic Hunter Lander Kane ends up too close to breaking her wards, she transports herself with unexpected consequences. Now Harper has a human body and must stay away from Lander and a coven of witches who want to perform the same magic that trapped Harper in the first place. She will have to learn to be human again while outsmarting everyone who wants to capture her.
Harper is a wonderful character. She has been trapped for hundreds of years but never loses her humanity. She evolves and grows and learns to use magic as it evolves with the times. She is stubborn and unwilling to drag her friends into her problems as well. We get some cameo appearances from Lark and Winifred and of course Beryl. Since we are taken all the way back in time, we get to see how House came to have Beryl, the sentient stake. And we get to meet the scary Lander Kane, who is obviously not as scary as he seems.
I love that we got to go all the way back in time to when Hestia becomes House. The story behind house is heart breaking and heartwarming all at the same time. The new type of mage was also a wonderful twist, and I absolutely loved everything about it. Such a seemingly innocuous thing can become something so dangerous. And the emotions, always the emotions in Brogan's books. There's never a book she writes that doesn't have you feeling all the feels! And every time she writes a new book, I say that book is the best yet and this one is no different. This was another perfect ending to a wonderful series. And while this is a standalone, I highly recommend reading the other 2 books as well!

Good

This book picks up the story of House, the sentient house we meet in Bitten Shifter and Bitten Vampire.
Harper was once a paper mage, before being forcibly made into a sentient house using illegal magic. She is confined to existence as a building, until a magical battle ends when she finds herself back in a human body.
Harper is determined to live, despite people considering her dangerous, and she makes sure Lander Kane, the Council enforcer who hunted her, has no need to eliminate her.
When other paper mages come under threat, Harper has to work with Lander to save them, and this means trusting someone— something she has not really done for almost two centuries!

I was really excited when I heard that House was going to get her own story, and this book did not disappoint. First we hear her back story, and how she came to be, along with her becoming a new person in her new, unexpected life.
Harper’s story is an engrossing one, with action, and adventure, and it was a pleasure to see the all-powerful house become a woman with an immense store of magic. I was only sad to see the story end, I would have loved to read more about the dynamic duo.
A thoroughly entertaining read, this is a standalone story, but works best after reading the other two books in the Bitten Series first- just because it sets the scene for us so well. Highly recommended for PWF fans and urban fantasy lovers alike.

Consistency is the author's strongest skill

This book continues Thomas' trend of clean consistent details across an overlapping series. She does it amazingly well, better than most other authors I've read. Her pacing is perfect, her editing is exceptional, and her world building is impressive.

Harper is impressive. Her background is intriguing and complex but so perfect and reasonable. She tells us her past is not just female centric, she has saved men as well, but the female support system is deliberately the core for this series.

The MMC isn't half bad either. Despite my inability to remember his name. He starts the series showing us his arrogant jerkish behavior but, as the story progresses in Harper's book, he shows the dichotomy of his personality. He has a shell of ministry driven ruthlessness to support and protect his community, but his core is caring and supportive of the individuals in his proximity. He is also humble enough to know the women involved are important and strong enough to get the work done themselves, calling in Lark and Fred when they are best for Harper. John could learn a few things from him.

The antagonist resolution is perfect. Ruthless but not bloody, complete and encompassing. The author does not leave any obvious baddies floating in the wind.

What a charming, unique book. I got completely caught up in this book and couldn’t put it down.

This story unfolds in three distinct parts. In the first part, Hestia is betrayed and forced into becoming a sentient house. Stripped of her former life, she struggles to regain agency. As the world changes around her, she chooses to become a sanctuary for others. Her powers draw attention from others and she’s attacked by a coven. In the second part, she transitions back to her human body and focuses on escape and survival. In the third part, she rescues other paper mages from the coven.

My main criticism was the superficial relationship between her and Lander. Their relationship is entirely grounded on them being attracted to each other, rather than emotional depth or shared experiences. Harper was also too overpowered. As a house, she was able to use her powers to become rich and change databases. When she transitioned back to humanity, she adapted quickly and was more powerful than everyone else. The kryptonite-like weakness introduced to limit her felt like a convenient trope rather than a natural constraint.

I enjoyed this installment. I was so made for House, being pursued like she was. Her alteration was never explained, no discovery or even good discussion on what occurred. I did feel the story goes against its own established writing. House is a paper mage. There is a treaty in place with the paper mages, they are outside of the ministry of magics power, yet House does not send notification to the head paper mage that she is being attacked? a council member attacks House, she’s in violation of the treaty, why didn’t the paper mages retaliate?
Then the same counselor goes to the island where the head paper mage resides and takes it? Again would be a violation of the treaty, and it was established that all were fearful of paper mages and fear crossing them, thy had diplomatic immunity and war would occur breaking that treaty? At any rate, overall the story was good, well written outside of the identified.

This book genuinely gave me the feels! Whenever asked, I could never choose what I wanted to be if magic/shifters were real, but now I know. I would be a paper mage like Harper House!!! I finally found my people!

I genuinely love this author and this book. This final installment in the 3 book “Bitten” mini series set in the same universe as the author’s other series, and was perfectly what I needed to get through a difficult time personally. This book was so entertaining, well written, so imaginative, so addicting, it helped me escape the reality of almost losing my father (he is now on the mend).

On another personal note, I almost cried when I saw Brogan dedicated a character to our late friend and author Jilleen Dolbeare, which truly shows Brogan’s strength of character and her kind soul.

I highly recommend!!

I was so eager to read this book, I started it as soon as I got it, and I read it in one sitting. Yup, it was that good. We are taken to the past where we find out about how the house became the House. I just love learning about the journey Hestia made in becoming Harper, and how she has to defend herself from those that want her power. This is a wonderful standalone in the Bitten Chronicles, and you definitely don’t need to read the three books in order. However, I would suggest you do, because they are all fantastic. This is an excellent addition to the series, full of action, a dash of romance, a smidgen of betrayal, and all kinds of fun. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I feel like I have been waiting for House’s story forever. She was a favorite side character earlier in the series. I loved how fleshed out her back story is. All the questions I had stocked up in earlier books were answered. This author always delivers amazing, kick butt heroines and House did not disappoint. I loved the world building and the little Easter eggs that are woven throughout the series. Beryl was a fave of mine and I love that we get to know her story. Highly recommended for people who love a strong FMC, Magic, great World building, amazing side characters/found family and MMCs who love that the girl saves the day.

I need more than 5 stars!
This is a wonderful book. If you have been following the series, this book does a wonderful job of going back and telling House’s story, and tying the previous books together. And then we get to follow her as she finds herself human again.
I simply don’t know how the author has such an amazing imagination! I don’t want to share any spoilers…but who knew that paper could be so versatile?
There is a lot of action and don’t forget the snack stealing raven. The book has a happy ending, plus two bonus scenes from Landers point of view. If you love urban fantasy, you must read this book!

What a great book!
The sentient house from the previous books is featured in this one. It has her history and current situation. The Ministry of Magic is after her and it ends up with her being turned into a living being and she’s confused to say the least. But she has chosen a name – Harper House.
This follows Harper and her quest to stay safe and get used to current times.
There is some action, lots of magic, humour, surprises, suspense, and more.
This is a well written, fast reading book.
It is awesome. There is a lot happening but a lot of the book focuses on Harper’s magic and her attempt to stay free.
Brogan Thomas never fails to deliver a great read.

Absolutely Incredible!

I believe this story is the most and best details that I've read in a long time! I felt as if I were a fly on the wall during the entire time, I had a very hard time putting this story down to attend to necessary life things lol I lost sleep reading lol
Incredible world building and character development!
This book was definitely worth the wait!
If you've read the first two books, you're definitely in for an amazing ride!
I loved the addition of Author, without spoilers, he was a surprise!
I definitely recommend this book, but you really need the first two books to fully appreciate Harper House's journey!

I’ve loved every book in this series, but none more so than Harper’s story. Each book has had a woman who was strong and determined in the face of everything that was thrown at her at its heart. Lark and Fred both had ‘house’ beside them, but this book is all about ‘house’ or rather Harper. It’s story of betrayal, pain, frustration and distrust, juxtaposed with strength and hope, learning to trust and perhaps to love. Harper is incredible, not only in her magic, but in her determination to protect and her ability to hope, despite all that has been thrown at her. It’s a magical story that you will not want to put down.

Last but not least

Excellent tale of two strong and capable people. I like that Harper isn't a damsel in distress, but a force to be reckoned with. A good match for the Hunter that's appeared in all these books.

I do have to admit that I found the ending of tiny bit unsatisfying simply because it literally ended with the first kiss and the possibility that maybe sometime soon they might start dating.

Considering the size of target they just painted on themselves, and the fact that this seems to be the last book in the series, it would have been nice to have a follow up chapter '10 years from now' or whatever.

Still a good story though.

Once in a while, a book comes along that cracks you wide open.

In a world imploding with ego and power, it’s refreshing to fall into a story that reads like a parable—one that explores ego, the self, and the greater whole. Through Hestia/House/Harper, we’re invited to reflect on what truly defines us: sentience, consciousness, self, intelligence, and soul.

Is House meant only to witness, exact vengeance, and gain power? Or is she called to something higher—a deep, understated magic that creates and manifests for the good of others, leading her toward compassion, connection, and perhaps even self-love?

Beautifully written, ingenious, and utterly delicious!

Loved it.

At first I didn't want to like Lander, I'd always liked House. But he came good. And when Lark, Fred and Beryl came in towards the end my tears started to flow.
Harper is able to do things not just because she could before but because she believes she can. Imagination and will are strong things. But Harper unlike many others with this amount of power, doesn't go after more power, but she helps people, she is like justice in a woman. I like that.
Thank you Brogan. I've already ordered your new book.
Highly recommended.

I want to live in Brogan Thomas's worlds

No matter how many books Brogan Thomas publishes, it is never enough. Her stories and characters are wonderfully written with so much depth and reaching the end of Lark, Fred, and House's story has left me bereft nevermind Beryl and Hatty.

House has been the golden thread linking the Bitten series, and finally, reading her tale has been a beautiful experience. It has been a balm in the currently scary world we live in.

I highly recommend this series and Brogan's work as a whole.

Another great read

I love these books they are imaginative and well written. I enjoy how the characters build throughout the books, especially the protagonists. The characters from previous books fold seamlessly into the following ones, yet the books can stand alone. These stories are ones I will read again and again. If you read Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, Nalini Singh you will love these stories.

Love this series

I only have one complaint- that the book, the series, is written in present tense. It is the personal peeve of an English teacher and of other authors.

That said, Brogan Thomas sucked me into her world so quickly that I just HAD to know what happened next. This world is amazing. The character development is thorough. The pacing is perfect. I am so glad that there is another book to come. I am invested in this world and these characters.

Wonderful!

I loved it much! I read this book in less than 24 hours, I just couldn't put it down! It was so great to see Harper finally get her story told. It was also lovely to see Lark and Fred again. I hope there are more from this world in the future. This series has proven to be just as good as her creatures of the other world series. Very different worlds, both extremely enjoyable. These are the kind of books I come back and reread over and over again.

Having followed The Bitten Chronicles from Lark’s story in Bitten Shifter through Fred’s in Bitten Vampire, I had high hopes for Bitten by Magic—and it did not disappoint. Harper’s story feels even more high-stakes because of her deep history as a paper mage. The betrayal, finding her purpose as House, friends and family, finding herself as a mage once more. I enjoyed reading all of her growth. A 5-star conclusion to a fantastic series!

This 3 book series is just great

I read them out of order, book 2, then book 1 and finally this one. It didn't matter though this last book was wonderful as it explained how a sentient house came into being 2hich features in both the pre house books. I don't want to spill the beans on the story except to say it contained all the elements that make a great magical copy mystery. Lots of incredible magic, corrupted officials and of course romance.

💜💜💜

I absolutely adored House in the previous two books and now, as Hestia and getting get backstory, I love her even more 💜

“Jill,” she replies, shooting Lander a playful scowl. “Only my mother calls me Jilleen.”

The tribute to author Jilleen Dolbeare is so sweet and makes me sad. 😭😭😭😭💔💜

I loved Harper House. It was so nice seeing all of her friends, her family, come to her aid when she needed them most but was too afraid to ask.

This is a hard one to rate for me. I like the ending, even the overall story, but at the same time it kind of fell a bit flat?!? There was no fire, no chemistry. I read the story and liked it, but couldn’t feel it.. it’s so disappointing because it could have been so much more and after the last two books I was seriously looking forward to House’s story, but while I don’t regret the read, I also feel disappointed

Everything I expected and more

I’ve really loved this series. I’m so glad House got her own book! If you’ve already read the first two books in this series, where House saves Lark and Fred, you’ll love this book where House has a chance to save herself. Not only that, but you get to hear more of her backstory and how her unique kind of magic was created. It’s very interesting and satisfying to see loose ends tied up in this story.
