Charlie
I’m tired.
My life has been filled with disappointments, sadness, and pain.
I’m hated by everyone besides my best friend. Until the captain of the hockey team falls on top of me. His eyes are as blue as the ice he plays on, and his smile fills me with warmth I’ve never felt before.
Shane Hawkins.
The man everyone’s friends with, now has me in his sights and he’s not showing any signs of letting me go. Even through my anxiety and messed up mind, he’s still there.
And I don’t understand why.
But it doesn’t matter. Everyone leaves me when the monsters in my head become too loud.

Shane
When I started at Gannon University, my main goal was to focus on hockey and be drafted into the NHL.
But that all changed the day I collided with the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. His golden-brown eyes held such sadness and pain that I couldn’t rest until I saw him again.
Charlie Alexander.
The gifted artist with a mind full of demons and a secret I want to uncover.
He tries to hide them from me, but I see him. His struggle ignites my instinct to protect him.
When he returns from a trip home, broken and bloody, I do everything I can to show him the goodness in life.
But sometimes that’s not enough.

6 🌟
This was a heartbreaking 💔 beautiful story! I really felt all Charlie’s emotions. Shane 💜 everyone deserves a Shane! And all the of Shane’s friends and a “fiery pants” friend Lilly.

Reread via audiobook - Jan 7 to Jan 12 2026 - still one of the most emotional books, reading you can feel Charlie’s voices… but… HEARING them I cried 😢 and brought up my feelings a memories of things from my more recent past that brought everything up. Still a 6 🌟 read for me.

A riveting romance featuring a young man with harrowing mental health challenges
5 stars overall; 5 stars story: 5 stars narration

This is a very well written and satisfyingly long standalone M/M new adult romance. The romantic pair has a happy ending after going through some really difficult stuff. Although one main character is a college hockey player, there isn’t much hockey action, maybe 15 minutes total. The focus is the totally positive romance between hockey player Shane and college art student Charlie, who has been battling an array of debilitating mental health challenges (anxiety, panic attacks, substance abuse, cutting, and hearing voices) that were triggered by past trauma. The “hurt/comfort” in the subtitle refers to Charlie hurting due to non-Shane reasons and Shane comforting him. Shane is truly a positive force in Charlie’s life. Shane is such a wonderful boyfriend; he is thoughtful, supportive, not clingy, cooks well, and stands up for himself and his friends. The minor characters are all distinctive, interesting, and entertaining, and I’d love to read their future stories. A chilling villain provides tension to the story as the reader waits for the next figurative ax to fall.

The novel contains a lot of mature content, so it is only suitable for adults. It includes terrible abuse by a parent and thoughts of suicide. The romance between college students starts out slowly and then progresses to frequent short but very steamy bedroom scenes. I highly recommend this romance to readers who like angsty New Adult or college M/M romance.

The dual narration is absolutely brilliant! The two narrators are really great at matching the character voices as they alternate chapters. They both are also wonderful at emoting, steamy scenes, female voices, and everything.

I requested and received a free audio copy via the publisher, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review. #PFPAudio #PinkFlamingoProductions #TheFlockVIPReviewTeam
