How do you rebuild a life shaped by loss?

Eight years after a devastating accident left his father permanently disabled, Theo Branson is still carrying the weight of a decision no teenager should have been asked to make. Now in graduate school for mental health counseling, he hopes to find a way forward and focus solely on his education and building his career. After years of dedication to his caregiving responsibilities, he’s ready to live a life that’s his own.

But when it comes to romance—something Theo has sworn off entirely—he is urged by his best friend to open his heart to the idea of finding love in his new era of independence.

With this push, Theo meets Javier, a gentle music tutor with a quiet sadness, and Randall, an enigmatic Army veteran whose sudden arrival stirs something Theo can’t explain. As he navigates the growing pull between the two men, Theo’s home life begins to unravel—fractured by secrets, addiction, and another tragedy that threatens to undo everything.

Just when Theo thinks he’s lost his chance at love and healing, a revelation shifts the world beneath his feet—one that defies logic and opens the door to something both heartbreaking and miraculous.

An optimistic yet emotionally raw perspective of grief, Go Easy On Me is a spirited debut that explores resilience, connection, and the unseen ties that bind us once we let go and allow love to find us in the most unexpected forms.

This was such a heartfelt and engaging read! From the very beginning, I was pulled in by the mix of romance, family dynamics, and genuine friendship. The love triangle added just the right amount of tension and fun, while the tender moments of love gave the story so much warmth. I also really appreciated how grief was explored, it added such depth and made the characters’ journeys even more meaningful. The relationships felt authentic and I found myself truly invested in their highs and lows. I’m so proud of the author for bringing these emotions to life in such a beautiful and relatable way. it was an absolute joy to read, and I can’t wait to see what he writes next!

What a deeply emotional journey! Theo has such a complex life, he's a caregiver for his father, studying to become a therapist, and just wants to be seen and loved. He meets 2 unexpected love interests, adding a sweet tension and conflict, and plenty of mystery.
This is a sweet love story, and layered emotional journey that looks at belonging, fate, acceptance, grief and loss.
It's raw, healing and authentic, and those final chapters were emotionally devastating yet beautiful.

Oh my lord! 🥹

This book was SO realistic, heartbreaking, beautiful, and all the things.

I had like ten different scenarios running round in my head for who and what Randall was up to. Each time I thought I had it, something cropped up in the book to make me think, ‘no, well, that can’t be it?!’ I won’t spoil who he turns out to be for you all, but this story is 100% worth a read. I loved the way it kept me guessing.

The story was written in such an honest way. I’ve never been a carer and I imagine as much as you love that person, it would be very hard to remain unselfish at all times. The love story and the family love. Theo’s friendship with Lianna and his professor. It was just all very emotional.

I believe this is a debut? If it is, I can’t wait to see what this author brings in the future.

I read this book in one sitting and cried for the last 20% of it. The book was recommended by a friend of a friend of the author because i love a gay romance. I went in with zero expectations but wow. This story hit me right in the feelings. The character growth, the grief, the love and forgiveness. The realness of caring for someone with chronic illness and the “helper” qualities that can make it hard to prioritize oneself? Lord. I’ll be weepy the rest of the day, thank you very much. Looking forward to Bradley’s next book.

And for anyone who loves a romance but hasn’t delved into LGBTQ books. First, you’re missing out so consider broadening your bookshelves. And second, this one is a great introduction to the genre. It’s very sweet and tender with just a dash of spice.

FIRST OFF FROM 50% on IT GOT SAD BUT SOO GOOOOOOD!!!

I called the plot twist the first time Theo met Randall, which kind of ruined the story for me to be honest.

If I hadn’t, the book might have been 3 stars for me, but the author‘s writing style just isn’t compatible with me, so I wasn’t ever able to fully invest myself in the story.

Go Easy On Me is one of those rich yet intimate stories you read, the one you feel like you have exposed your most intimate and bare thoughts with the world. To me, it did not feel like a story I just read, but a story that understood me and the inner corners of my unsaid words. It is that kind of book you read and you know it will stick with you for a very long time.

The premise of the story follows Theo, the main protagonist, who is plagued and burdened by circumstances he did not ask for, but ended up doing anyway. As if not doing his share would brand him forever as the uncaring, ungrateful, unfeeling son. However, that could not be farther from the truth. Theo became his father's caregiver at a very young age. Yet, what piqued my interest is the sudden disassociation between the father and Thomas, his father's name. This small yet intricate details shows you how jarring, how traumatic this experience is to someone so young, as Theo becomes unable to be understood by his peers for having invisible shackles-caring for his father constantly alongside his family-and wanting to enjoy life.

Then, he meets Rendall, a war veteran with a charming personality. Unbeknownst to Theo, Rendall was going to change his life around, help him understand himself better. Despite Rendall's charming and charismatic self, he also hides beneath the trauma, the grief, and loss. Losing loved ones had Rendall think he, too, was branded by something he could not escape until he met Theo. Theo's resilience and strength had him turn his life around as well.

Together, they move through a journey not centered around love for others only, but a journey towards loving yourself. Finding yourself. Healing. This was all portrayed with Bradley James' strong literary prowess, especially in how he weaved those heavy, strong emotions into words. It catches the reader off guard, but it makes them feel seen and understood.

This debut novel is a complicated romance that at first seems like it may become a why choose or love triangle, centered around a young man with a lot of baggage—but it wasn’t either of those and the book is so much more than that. It was surprising how deeply the book explored grief, particularly the grief involved in caring for a relative with a traumatic brain injury.
The story itself was moving, and the sentiments behind the story arc are touching and heartfelt.

The heavier topics saturate the story, but the juxtaposition of watching Theo try to live his life was almost enough to keep it from feeling too heavy. Still, this is not a light read. There are some tough them—but they are handled with care and respect.

One rather odd writing convention of the author was that his MC, as a full-grown adult, keeps referring to other parents (even in his thoughts) as “Ms.” or “Mr.” followed by a first name. At first, I assumed it was that person’s last name or maybe just how the main character was raised to refer to them—but it’s used across the board for side characters’ parents as well. It was distracting, as it isn’t a common social norm.

Overall, this was an intriguing book that covered some important and timely topics.
(Be sure to read the trigger warnings.)

Please note, I did receive this advanced copy ahead of publication; I am writing this honest review voluntarily and appreciate the opportunity provided by the author to review this book.

Go Easy on Me - Bradley James

I really enjoyed the story. There are so many parts where I cried, especially the ending. I love Theo so much, and there are so many parts where I was screaming for him to be selfish and to choose him for once. I loved the love interests like Randall and Javier. I did see the twist about Randall but it was made emotional when we find out it involves Javier. I love getting to know the characters and I found them all to be very realistic and real. I can’t wait to see what else this author writes.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book is crushing in some moments, and so hopeful in others. I am not a very spiritual person so it surprised me how much this actually hit me.

Theo is someone I connected with almost immediately, as he is given an impossible choice in the prologue and ends up with day to day responsibility that most people could not begin to imagine.

He is intelligent, but like everyone is fallible, and there are moments where his emotions overcome him, making him more relatable. He is not perfect, which is what makes him a good main character.

Randall as a character is charming but definitely someone who does not want to be known.

Javi is adorable, and kind, and he seems to know the right thing to do in the right moment for Theo and is full of warmth and understanding.

This book is not an easy read, especially if you are familiar with end of life care, traumatic brain injury, or drug addiction. There were moments I wanted to stop reading but I’m glad I kept up with it.

I do wish there had been more moments of connection between Javi and Theo, as they didn’t seem to get to know each other that well on the page, and I do wish there had been more discussions between them that we, as readers could see.

Go Easy On Me is one of those rare debuts that sneaks up on you with its quiet power. From the very first chapter, I was drawn into Theo Branson’s world a young man whose life has been shaped by loss, caretaking, and the heavy kind of choices no teenager should ever face. The writing holds grief and hope in the same palm, creating a story that feels both tender and unflinchingly real.

What really stayed with me was the heart at the center of it all: romance, yes, but also family, friendship, and the aching complexity of healing. The love triangle between Theo, Javier, and Randall isn’t just tension for tension’s sake it shows the different ways love can appear when you’re finally ready to let it in. These relationships felt authentic and earned, with moments of warmth that balance the story’s heavier themes of addiction, secrets, and loss.

The book handles grief with such honesty and optimism that I found myself slowing down to savour passages. It’s a story about resilience, connection, and how unexpected revelations can crack open our lives in painful but miraculous ways. By the end I felt moved, a little bruised, but grateful. A heartfelt, engaging read from a new author I’ll be watching closely.

What a great debut! Go Easy On Me is a sweet contemporary romance with a touch of PNR, separating itself from the usual contemporary storylines.

Theo's life is busy: busy with school and busy with taking care of his father, who had a major brain injury 8 years prior. The stress between himself, his mother, and his sister makes it clear just how much pressure his father's debilitating condition has put on them.

At the urging of his best friend, they skim a dating app, only to find that the music teacher (javier) who gives his best friend's brother music lessons, is on the app and he's HOT. Upon meeting, Javier is flirty with Theo, much to Theo's surprise. At the same time, Theo meets Randall, an attractive, friendly, and thoughtful student who, again--much to Theo's surprise, seems interested in him.

The strong theme in the story---aside from romance---is mental health, and how many of us find ourselves in situations where we give, give, give and feel guilty when we need a break. The subject matter is handled very well, in a realistic, sensitive way.

As other readers have stated, there is a fun twist in the story, and I'm not gonna lie, I got a bit sniffly and watery.

WOW. Just wow. Go Easy On Me is an absolute tear-jerker and easily one of the best books I’ve read this year. The depth, the drama, the bittersweet ache, and that hard-earned HEA — Bradley James delivers it all with stunning emotional clarity. And the twist? I won’t spoil anything, but it hit like a sledgehammer in the best, most devastating way.

Theo’s journey is unforgettable. The way he shoulders the weight of caring for his parents — especially during the most intense moments of his life — is portrayed with heartbreaking honesty. Randall is the soft, steady support everyone wishes they had, offering exactly the right grounding when Theo is seconds away from losing himself. And Javier, with his charisma and compassion, steps in as a lifeline when everything threatens to collapse.

The final fifty pages? I was openly crying. It’s rare to find a book that uses heavy triggers not for shock value, but because the story demands them to be authentic — and this one does it with grace, respect, and emotional truth. Even the subtle paranormal moments are beautifully executed, adding a layer of meaning rather than overshadowing the heart of the story.

Brilliant. Haunting. Beautifully crafted. I loved every single page.

Go Easy on Me is one of those stories that sticks with you long after you’ve finished. Theo’s journey felt so raw and real, the guilt he carries from his past, his devotion to family, and his hesitant steps toward love all hit me right in the heart. I loved how Bradley James weaves themes of grief and resilience with such tenderness.

The romance was beautifully layered, too. Javier’s quiet strength and Randall’s mysterious intensity brought such different energies, and watching Theo open himself up to both love and healing was powerful. And that final revelation? I didn’t see it coming it was heartbreaking and hopeful all at once.

If you’ve ever carried the weight of loss but still held onto the belief that love can surprise you when you least expect it, this book is a must read. It’s emotional, heartfelt, and ultimately life-affirming.

My thoughts: This is a debut novel? That literally tore me apart and had me crying and feeling all my emotions. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this and going through Theo’s journey. A wonderful debut filled with so many emotions!

What I loved:

Obviously, Randell’s whole story line was my favourite once you found out what/who he was and what he was trying to do. Shed a little tear.
Hayley… I just wanted to yell at her, but in the end it just all clicked.
Loved how the subject of loss and trauma was handled because we all grieve so differently.
That creepy rabbit's foot, wish I had that.
Oh, Theo, I get it. I have felt the same way he felt and have done the exact same pushing away he did. So it was like reliving parts of my life that took some time to work on.

I didn’t know what to expect going into this debut novel by Bradley James.
Was pleasantly surprised with the care given to describing what it’s like to live with an acquired brain injury.
It takes someone special to be a carer, especially for a family member.
I found Theo to be a caring, funny and sweet mmc who does everything he can to help his family as much as he can even at the expense of his own happiness.
Really enjoyed the best friend Lianna who had just the right amount of snarkiness.
Randell was also a treat to discover who was just the right amount of charming, cute and charismatic.
Not going to lie i did pick the ending, but don’t want to give too much away.
Looking forward to what comes next for this new author.

When you get ready to read this book make sure to set aside some time, cozy up with a good blanket and settle in because once you start reading, you will not be able to stop until the end.

I was very impressed with the letter to the readers in both the beginning and the end. This book is so much more than I thought it would be when I decided to read it. I'm very thankful that I did though.

Theo and all of his friends and family are absolutely amazing characters. The world building grabs ahold of you and doesn't let go from beginning to end. It will make you giggle and break your heart. The emotions are very strong in this story and it just pulls you in.

Omg! This was such an emotional book and had be from the very first page. I really was moved throughout the book because it’s the authors life and it really allows us to see through his lens of how difficult life can get and how difficult grief can be. I really loved how you took us on a journey of grief. I DEFINITELY ugly cried many times in this book and I even ugly cried reading the Acknowledgements.

If you want to read a book that is about truth and reality but still about romance and love this is definitely a book for you. There’s not enough stars to rate this book because I would definitely give it a million stars.

This was a debut?? I don’t believe it. This book was so raw, so realistic, and extremely relatable. I have taken care of my parents and I don’t think I’ve ever come across a novel that truly “gets it.” But “Go Easy on Me” gets it.

The story ends in a HEA, but the build-up to a very intense, traumatic ending was smart, funny, and emotional. I haven’t cried this hard reading in a long time.

Then the twist. WHATTTTT!? People here are saying they guessed the twist or figured something was up. I don’t know about that. I don’t know how you could have guessed THAT.

I loved this book and I will definitely return to its pages one day. This book will stick with me for a very long time.

I really enjoyed this book. It began with a decision of whether or not to take extreme steps to keep their father alive. Choosing to try to keep their father had the main character working as a caretaker when he was not in school. He has a good friend who keeps trying to get Theo to take some time to care for himself. Then he meets Randall. There is something special about Randall that causes Theo to actually have some fun. There is something else special about Randall that the reader will figure out before Theo does. It's not an easy path to the HEA but it is a satisfying one.

Go Easy On Me was an amazing story! The topics that were tackled were VERY close to my heart and at times it felt like Theo’s story was MY life! The relationship dynamic between Theo, Randall and Javier was very genuine and at times I was rooting for one or the other and all of them at once! I cried tears of sorrow and of happiness reading this book! Although I predicted what was going to happen, it did not take away from the impact it had on me when it proved me right. I am an immediate fan of Bradley James! If this is what he put out for his “Debut Novel”, I CANNOT WAIT to see what he comes up with next! I loved it!

This was a pretty intense book - following Theo as he tries to manage his own life as a grad student, a caretaker, a man trying to find a partner, a friend, a brother and a son. His father needs a full time caretaker after a brain injury years ago. He and his family struggle with splitting things up and he doesn’t feel like he has a life. Enter Randall - who seemed way too good to be true. And Javier - who seems like the perfect guy. How can Theo deal with these two men and how can he survive another trauma and loss in his life. This was very good. I definitely knew the twist but it didn’t take anything away from the story. Definitely recommend this story.

Go Easy On Me got me all the way in my feelings. This is a debut author and I went in with no expectations at all.

This book gives us the story of Theo Branson, a grad student, a caregiver, a son, a brother, a friend. Theo is 22 going on 65 and has had no time to live his own life.

Enter Randall, a mysterious stranger and Javier a ray of sunshine and hope.

This is a magical tale of love, friendship, family and the reality of getting mired in the heaviness of life.

This was a beautiful book. A story that tugged at my heartstrings.

Theo is the caregiver for his dad after a devastating accident. He's trying to get a degree in social work & take care of him at the same time. Along the way he meets Randall an army vet also studying to be a social worker & Javier a musician. Theo tends to look for love in all the wrong places & while Theo likes them both equally , Randall seems to never be there when Theo needs him, but Javier is always there for him. There's a plot twist you never see coming. Emotionally well written. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I am a little torn over how to review this book, as I figured out a major plot twist very early on, and it affected how I read the rest of the book.

If you do read this book, make sure to read the trigger warnings at the start, as I can see how some people may be affected.

The book is a good read for making sure to take care of yourself, when you have to take care of others.

Go Easy On Me

This was an amazing story. I can't believe it is a first book.
I cried but came away with peace.
I enjoyed it so much I recommend it to several friends. One is a writer herself and she has forwarded it to her mother who has wrote over 100 books. I am waiting to see what they think.
Hope there is another book itching to be written, in my humble opinion this is a best seller.

A very powerful and emotional debut novel. Theo was faced with an impossible choice at 14, after which he and his mother and sister became full-time carers for a father with severe brain injury. His feelings and sacrifice of himself were beautifully written. While I wasn't surprised by the outcome, Theo's growth in self-confidence and learning to help others without losing himself was very touching. It's definitely a book that needs to be read with a box of tissues nearby.

Thank you to the author for the ARC. All thoughts are my own.

I went into this expecting a hard hitting romance but THIS was a new level of pain. I cried like a baby. This was beautifully written and heart wrenching. It broke my heart into a million pieces but still had me feeling happiness at the end.
