Oh Shy, you just had to go there, didn’t you? We get a big, big reveal this volume and, when it finally comes, my reaction is a big old ‘sigh’. One of those ideas that was probably there the whole time, but also didn’t need to be.

I’ve said this every volume without fail, but Teru’s a really good character who deserves a less pedestrian story. Seeing her struggle and still push forward has been one of the series highlights for me.

Iko’s arc didn’t quite go where it looked like it was going, but I’m not sure that what we got was necessarily an improvement. I mean, we did get a little more drip feed yuri bait that was cute. And she really helps Teru step out from under her sister’s shadow.

Things definitely seem to be moving towards the finale, at any rate. Amarariruku’s grand plan stands mostly revealed and it is pretty childish, which honestly befits an evil plot drawn up by kids.

Still, it is also little over-reliant on umbrellas, which turn out to have massive amounts of symbolism this volume. That said, one person wielding an umbrella is fun. Several people, however, is goofy - there’s a next episode preview of several foes standing with umbrellas that just looks full-on ridiculous.

I did mostly appreciate the way that Keheheh’s story played out at the start of the volume, to rewind a little. We see precisely what she thinks of herself and why, which is quite sad.

Even with people who are accepting of her for what she is, they’ve really done a lot with her and Spirit bonding, it makes the point about how a cycle of abuse or neglect can be very difficult to escape. That felt real.

Seeing Shy define her own heroism was a great step forward for the character and I did love how she wrapped up this volume. It’s too bad that these solid character moments are wrapped up in such underwhelming plots and revelations.

3.5 stars - no change from the baseline; I fully believe that the personal development of the cast is worth far more than the plotting and the latter gets real silly this time out.
