Uses hundreds of interviews and case histories to examine the realities of motherhood today revealing the darker feelings that accompany this endlessly demanding job
The quote on the front cover "If you could start over, would you have children again?" 70% of American mothers said NO! in an Ann Landers poll.
I couldn't believe it so I had to read the book. Even though it is an older book it is an eye opener. Nothing against children persay but the impact they have on your life. I think teens should read this book. I bet it would be great birth control reminder.
After reading this book my answer is still YES a million times over though that I would have still had my children--the turmoil and negativity is way less than the pride and joy I have for my children.
Every teenage girl should read this book, and every young couple also. It details how great a toll it takes, the 24/7 unending work, grind and loss of sense of self. Motherhood and parenthood in general has so much fantasy surrounding it in popular culture. This book brings reality to the efforts and exhaustion of raising a child. For some it is worth it, for others it is not. It's very beneficial to know both sides of the equation before having children. I worked for a very wealthy man, venture capital investor. He and his wife had two daughters and a live-in housekeeper and her husband for housekeeping and household chores. They told me if they knew before they had children what they knew after their daughters were born, they would not have had children. The couples I know who don't have children have better marriages. Some people thrive on it, others don't. Some people are meant to be parents, but it's not for everybody.
