Welcome to the graduation games at Shadowbone Academy.
So I survived the hunt. Barely. And now we have weeks to prepare for the graduation games. As the war grows deadlier in the shadow realm, the queen will have more soldiers for her army, no matter the cost.
Don't get me wrong, immortality sounds pretty great, but I'm enough of a realist to know my chances of winning the games? Yeah, they're not looking so great.
On the plus side, my mates are starting to see how amazing I am, and I finally have some more allies, but as my past begins to unravel, old wounds rising to the surface, I start to realize regaining my memories might just be a matter of life and death. Something bad is happening in the academy, and somehow, I'm right in the middle of it.
As students continue to disappear, it becomes clear there are enemies within the academy walls, and I might just be the only one who can stop them. You know, if I don't lose my life first.
Looks like there are more fun times ahead.
A Shadow So Wicked is a fun but dark(ish) why choose fantasy romance novel, and the second book in the Fated Mates of Shadowbone Academy series. It features a clumsy, relatable heroine, and her droolworthy, fated mates who will do anything to protect her. The story is in first person, present tense, and note that while the main focus is on our leading lady, there is also MM in the harem.
This series is connected to the Game of Psychos series, but can easily be read as a standalone series. For a full list of content warnings, please visit the author's website.

I do want the mean Queen and her cohorts to die horribly. She such a power hungry runt, I call her mean names in my head. I really am invested in seeing the end to her machinations 😉
I don't know how I forgot about all the MCs' personalities, but it was great rediscovering them. Shade with her awkward and upbeat quirkiness. I learned in this book that she is such a cinnamon roll, and I like her more for it. I completely blanked on the guys being a-holes to everyone but her. Well, except for Knox, he's still an a-hole, but at least I know why. Mia finally gave us details about what happened with his previous mate, which helped me understand Knox a little better. Still doesn't excuse his behavior, though. The romance was on point. The connection between her and the guys grew. They were more affectionate towards her. I loved how protective and caring they were, even if they made stupid decisions to use her as bait. Like, why? Nevertheless, they were good together.
Holy crap, this book was epic! I devoured it. The backdrop was perfection: a dark forest (every forest in a fantasy is dark; do not argue with me), a lavish ball, and, more importantly, deadly games. Not only was the plot interesting, but at times it was funny. There are a couple of scenes that stand out. One was in Knox's Glen with Bonfang (Bo was so over it), and the other was at the ball with the bullies. Shade does what she does best: blurts out whatever she's thinking and lets the chips fall where they may. However, it was all the twists (and there were a few) that got me. Each and every single one of them was jaw-dropping. We actually get answers! The last few chapters were everything! I couldn't contain it. Mia ended things on the best cliffhanger. Not the type that leaves you in misery, instead, it leaves you in anticipation. I give A Shadow So Wicked ten out of ten stars.
If you’ve ever wanted a fantasy romance that feels like it knows you’re here for the spice 🌶️, the tension 🔥, and just a little bit of emotional damage and, of course, top-tier shadow daddies—A Shadow So Wicked by Mia Hartson absolutely delivers.
From the start, this book pulls you into a world where danger lurks around every corner—and somehow the most dangerous thing might still be the love interest(s). You know the type: morally questionable, definitely hiding secrets, and operating under a strict “touch her and die” policy. And yes, you will forgive them for everything. Immediately. (I’m looking at you, Knox)
Our FMC- Shade, is easy to root for: relatable, a little stubborn, occasionally overwhelmed, and slowly realizing she is actually a bad ass. Watching her go from “what is happening to my life” to “oh… I might actually be powerful and terrifying” is deeply satisfying. And yes, she absolutely deserves her shadow daddies.
The trope lineup? Unhinged in the best way: fated mates, ominous prophecies, memory loss that shows up at the WORST possible time, and enough tension to make you question your emotional stability.
Is it dramatic? Yes. Are we eating it up? Also a yes.
Overall, A Shadow So Wicked is the kind of book you pick up for fun and accidentally become emotionally invested in. Come for the fantasy and spice, stay for the chaos, and leave wondering how fictional characters—and their aggressively protective energy—have this much control over your feelings.
Highly recommended if you enjoy: An academy setting, shadow daddies, fated mates, prophecies, memory loss, “touch her and die” energy, and whispering “oh no” every few chapters.
These book are sooooo freaking good! The characters are perfect, the plot is fantastic, the shadow beasts are fascinating and the pacing is spot on.
We essentially pick up where we left off in the first book and FINALLY some of the people we have hated from the jump have some serious karma catching up to them (it so satisfying, there are not even words for it at least for one of them).
The side plot of missing students gets some serious traction and you start getting answers to your burning questions. The queen of shadows though? We still don’t really know if she is actually doing the shit she does to save everyone and is just queen delulu, or if she is actually bad. Her actions and approach to everything and everyone are questionable at best and downright disgusting and terrible at worst.
I hope that we get some more answers to our many other questions in the next book, more time for Shade and her mates to develop their bonds and learn more about what part the various creatures, Blake and her kings and shade and co will play in this war with the evil creatures that this whole academy is based on to defeat.
The other bad dude, let us pray that he finally gets what’s coming to him. I have a feeling it will be very slow, very painful and as drawn out as possible once her mates find out what he did to shade let alone the fact he’s been betraying every single person and has been responsible for many deaths, spies and kidnappings.
I don’t know what they put in these books but once you pick it up you cannot put it down.
Shade has barely survived the hunt, and the upcoming graduation games are even more treacherous. But Shade isn't giving up, and she's even taking some of her training more seriously. As her relationship with her fated mates grows, she regains some of her memories, making it clear that she may be the only one who can save the missing students. But is that going to be enough if she's fated to be the doom the war she's training to fight in?
I loved the personal growth of Shade in this book. She hasn't lost her sarcasm or her sense of humor, and the fact that she's taking the treats she's experiencing more seriously is much appreciated. But the training isn't hardening her heart, as she's still unwilling to partake in the atrocities surrounding her. Her personal moral code is strengthened throughout the story, and leads to her questioning many of the actions of her mates and the queen. I enjoyed her learning about herself and becoming more confident in what she believed throughout the story, and I can't wait to see what comes in the next book.
A fantastic second book to the series, that builds upon the tensions of the first book while still developing greater intimacy between the main characters.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I don’t know what kind of dark magic Mia Hartman laced into this sequel, but once I opened it, productivity for the day was officially cancelled. Sleep? Optional. Responsibilities? Ignored. This book had me in a chokehold from page one.
We dive straight back into the chaos where the first installment left us, no gentle easing in, no mercy. And can I just say… watching certain characters finally get their long-overdue karma? Chef’s kiss. It was the kind of justice that makes you want to reread the scene immediately just to savor it again. For at least one of them, it was deeply satisfying.
The mystery surrounding the missing students finally starts to unravel in meaningful ways, which I appreciated so much. We’re not just circling questions anymore, we’re getting answers. But of course, this series refuses to hand over everything neatly tied with a bow. The Queen of Shadows remains one giant, morally murky question mark. Is she playing the villain for the “greater good,” or is she simply unhinged with a crown? Her decisions range from suspicious to absolutely appalling, and I still don’t know where I land on her. Honestly, that tension makes her even more compelling.
Then there’s Shade.
After barely surviving the Hunt, she’s thrown toward the brutal Graduation Games, and somehow the stakes feel even higher. What I loved most in this book is how much she grows without losing herself. She’s still sarcastic, still sharp, still unwilling to bow to nonsense. But she’s also more focused. The training becomes real to her. The danger becomes personal. And yet, she refuses to let the academy’s cruelty harden her into something she’s not.
Her moral compass actually strengthens here, which I found refreshing. She questions her mates. She questions the queen. She questions the system. And she does it without losing that biting humor that makes her so fun to read. Watching her reclaim pieces of her memory and slowly realize the larger role she might play, possibly as savior… or possibly as doom, adds this delicious layer of tension to everything.
And can we talk about her fated mates for a second? The bond development in this installment felt deeper, more intimate, more emotionally charged. I’m really hoping the next book gives us even more time with them working as a unit — especially with the war looming and the shadow creatures threatening everything the academy claims to protect.
As for the other “bad dude”? Let’s just say… I’m manifesting consequences. Slow ones. Painful ones. The kind that match the magnitude of betrayal, death, spying, and kidnapping he’s orchestrated. When her mates inevitably learn the full truth about what he did to Shade, I have a feeling the fallout will be spectacular.
Overall, this sequel doesn’t suffer from middle-book syndrome at all. It escalates the danger, deepens the relationships, strengthens the heroine, and keeps the overarching war simmering at a near-boil. It builds beautifully on book one while carving out its own identity.
If you start this book, clear your schedule. You won’t be putting it down.
I’m sorry, but five stars simply isn’t enough for this book, I have to give it a five and a half. This is my favorite book this year, so far, and so totally worth it! I wanted to crawl into a wall so nobody could disturb my reading time, and I seriously want to scream now I’m done. Scream about that juicy cliffhanger, yell about how much I loved this book, talk endlessly about the worldbuilding, shout about all the twists and turns, …
Really, there is so much to talk about. But my personal favorites about this book, and the entire series so far, are by far the worldbuilding, our leading lady, and the twists and turns in the storyline. There are parts that are predictable, but even then the author throws some information in I hadn’t linked to it so far. The worldbuilding is ‘chef’s kiss’, with so many fascinating creatures, and I love to see Shade navigating through it in all her clumsy gloriousness. She’s absolutely awesome, and I can’t wait to see what book three will bring after everything I’ve learned about her in this second book.
Oh. My. Friggin. God! That cliffhanger ending!! I was absolutely hooked from the first chapter. I loved the character development within the book, especially Knox! I feel this book answered a lot of questions that were asked from the first book, and it tied back well without being repetitive at all! The FMC is clumsy and sarcastic but a definite badass! She really comes into herself in the book, and not just in her gaining her magic.. She has a real soft spot for other humans and creatures, despite what they may have done to her. I LOVE LOVE LOVED the Possessiveness of all her mates. The touch-her-and-die vibes were brilliant! I also loved learning a little more about the different shadow creatures, and how awesome it was that Shade could communicate with them all! Now I need to go back and read the Game of Psychos series!
Mia Hartson never disappoints me, and this book was no different. I will admit: I forgot everything that happened at the end of the first book, but I caught on very easily and remembered things quickly. The relationship development between Shade and her men, especially Knox, was amazing. I also loved seeing Shade discover who she was and how that shapes who she is now. I love that she’s still weird in this book and says some ridiculous things. She’s my kind of gal, and I just loved her as an FMC. I cannot recommend this book series enough, and I’m dying for the next one. This is the biggest problem with ARCs: the longer wait for the next one. I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review, and this is my review.
I was so happy when Shade's story began in 'A Curse So Cruel'. And now, that story continues in this second installment, 'A Shadow So Wicked'. I will admit, the beginning was a bit slow and I wanted more action than 'training'. But in a blink of an eye, answers came crashing down! (Know what the "curse' is now and how it came to be!;)) And along with them came the tension, drama, action, remorse, and more. So glad Knox finally opened his eyes (tired of wanting to hit him upside the head to dislodge some...thing). Absolutely loved the last third of the book and just knew a certain somebody had to make an appearance...and save the day!! Can't wait to see the swords and magic fly in the next installment!!
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Omg, where to start with this? This book took us on a journey and a half!
With the graduation games being brought forward for all students the odds of success are not in Shades favour. Her magic is still sketchy, her bonded animali is still a no show and she has enemies among the students out to get her. On the plus side though they discover that intimate times between her and her mates seem to help strengthen her powers. Well then bring it on!
This book was just so amazing. As it went on more and more gets revealed and I just can't get my head around that ending! I wanted to shout so many times and even cry, some of the meaner characters are so frustrating! I hope it isn't too long till the next book but I know whatever the timescale it will be worth waiting for!
Well, she did manage to survive the games. That means everything is getting even more difficult than it was before. Even with three of her four mates helping her as best they can, Shade is still having problems, not to mention, there’s still no sign of her animali. Plus, she still doesn’t have her memories or all her powers. This series so far has been excellent! I have been pulled into this book and my interest has not waned. The writing is fantastic, the world building is spot on and the action is non-stop. Not to mention, Shade always remains true to herself, regardless of the situation.
I received an advanced reader’s copy and am voluntarily leaving this review.
It took me a little while to get back into this one because I’d forgotten a lot of the characters from the previous book.
Once I got my bearings again though, I remembered why I enjoy this series so much.
The FMC is genuinely funny and flawed in a way that makes her interesting rather than frustrating. She still has a lot of growing to do, but she’s not weak or pathetic which makes her easy to root for.
The tension between her and one of the MMCs is especially good. Their dynamic hasn’t been resolved yet, and it feels like the story is building toward something rather than dragging things out.
The plot keeps moving forward and by the end I was already looking forward to the next book.
Ok so I didn’t remember a lot from book 1 so I went back and did a quick re-read.
There is something in the writing and story which keeps me wanting more of Shade - I find her inner monologue quite funny and relatable 😂
I’m disappointed that it took the whole book for shade to remember who she was… I also didn’t like that it took most of the book for Knox to realise she is his mate and not in a reincarnated sense but his literal mate from the very start… 🙄🙄🙄🙄 could this not have happened towards the start so they could’ve bonded as a group finally 😜
Anyway… glad Blake finally made an entrance - I’m quite interested in reading book 3 after that cliff hanger…
Shade is at it again! I live for all of the commentary running through her mind. This book had action, spice, twists and turns!
The spice level has turned up in this book 🌶🌶🌶.
We find out more background in this book with Shade and all the MMCs. The picture is starting to truly come together. There is also a lot more action and confidence.
The last chapter was my favorite way to end mid series books. I can't wait until the next and final book is released. I'm excited to see how all will come together.
This entire series so far has had me in a chokehold. No joke. I am obsessed with Shade, from her witty personality down to her romance book obsession (which we can all fully relate too) The games in this book really brought an exciting edge to the series. The Queen is the perfect villain and I love how Shade’s empathy really rules all. That ending? Livid. Why does Mia always leave me on the edge of my seat. Book 3 needs to be out ASAP. What a line to finish the book on seriously.. Obsessed
Mia Hartson has done it again and we are kept on the edges of our seat until the next instalment. The story is witty and full of twists, turns and spice. Introducing characters that are funny and relatable. A Shadow so Wicked is a great follow on from the first book and continues the intriguing story of Shade and her origins. I devoured this book in 2 days and cannot wait for Shades conclusion.
Shades stories are an easy read and great for escaping reality and drudgery of daily life.
Words I have shouted whilst reading this book, in no particular order): Yes No WHAT?!? Omg yes! She’s the bad guy, isn’t she? No, it’s him Go on Shade YES YES YES WOW I think that about sums it up. I thought at times it was a bit slow, but that gave Shade and the guys time to not bond, and then the action explodes out of nowhere. The last 20% of the book was like the Hunger Games on speed. And the ending, never been so glad to see a friendly face! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌶️🌶️🌶️
I have been enjoying this series.. I still think Shade is one of my favorite FMCs. She doesn’t take any crap from her men. She is carrying even though others treat her like crap … and her inner monologues are entertaining.
Mean girls
Mean guys
Challenges, obstacles and a lot of death
and then her 4 mates .. 3 on board but one still very very much not.
It gets deeper You know its good when you get the emotions. I mean from the snark to the giggle. The characters are just do full of life. Yep some things were answered but now we has new questions. Them? Yep still trying to tip toe around the great white elephant in the room lol. But only sometimes. A mystery is afoot and must be solved! The heat was okay not fire... but okay. Then action as well as the interaction among the characters were spot on. "Next"
I was so excited to read this book as I had been waiting since I finished book one. We definitely get more growth with Shade herself and with her mates. We also get more spice in this book which I was hoping for. We still have some questions in this book but I was so happy when Knox started coming around. This book does leave you on a cliffhanger so beware! But I waited somewhat patiently for this book so I can hopefully do it again! Come on book three!!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was the best in the series so far! The plot is thickening and the relationships between Shade and her men are evolving. The academy setting is great and I love the forbidden nature of the relationship between Shade and her mates. I actually can’t decide if I have a favourite as all the men are great in their own way however Knox won me over big time in this book. Wrath and Galen are the biggest sweeties and Thane is grumpy as but becoming more and more of a cinnamon roll. The ending was super action packed and suspenseful. I can’t wait to see what book 3 brings!
The last maybe 30% of the book was what really did it for me. In the beginning it all felt a bit the same, there weren't any reveals and I thought we weren't going anywhere but that last 30% changed EVERYTHING. I got reveals, I got tension, I literally couldn't put the book down. And the ending was just chef's kiss, I'm so eager to get the next one.
Shade is still trying to remember her past, train for the trials, like her life depends on it….because it does. Oh, and hide her fated mate status from the Queen.
Throw in some spicy scenes with her shadow daddies, hilarious sarcasm from the smut book loving FMC in this multiple POV book and you will not want to put it down.
Beware of that cliffhanger!! I can’t wait for book three!!
Shade is my ride or die. I would love o friend like her, maybe not the danger that surrounds her. This story is loaded with sarcasm. smoldering shadow daddies, danger and a woman learning more about herself and coming into her power. This is a fantastic read . I lost sleep reading this book. I am waiting with baited breath for the next book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was enthralling! Mia Harrison's heroine is multifaceted, balancing school challenges, games, fated mates, and her own memories. With each revelation, she gains power and insight into her identity. Just as she's finding her footing, her best friend's unexpected arrival shifts everything, leaving the story at a suspenseful juncture until the next book.
Now I don’t write reviews, they are more notes so I remember for the next book
The FMC Shade has memory loss which slowly starts coming back in this book as she interacts more with her fated mates Knox, Thane, Galen and Raith. She finally finds her animal bond at the end of the books and her bestie makes an appearance Ends on a cliffhanger
I just absolutely love this story! Shade is fast becoming one of my all time favorite book besties. The story takes you for a ride. Is filled with action, plot, side characters, hilarity, angst, hot shadow daddies, and so much more. I cannot wait until the next book comes out!!
I enjoyed book 2 just as much as book 1! I love the fact the FMC is still quirky and so funny. The lust between them is perfectly balanced with the banter and I’m really enjoying the plot and how it’s playing out. Keeping me guessing what’s going to happen next , can’t wait for the next book 😊
Book two in the series starts right where we left off in book one, and it is filled with shadow daddies, smut, and so much banter between our FMC and everyone lol. She is so funny and relatable.. we end on another cliffy and we need more ASAP! Can’t wait to see where book three takes us.
