A Merry Little Alpine Love Affair

Rate this book
When you get told to attend an all expenses paid work trip to Switzerland with your grumpy boss, you say “yes, sir” and don’t complain.

Claire - Christmas was Claire’s favorite time of year. It meant traditions with her family, endless movie marathons, and finally seeing her sister for the first time since she moved away. Christmas this year was going to be perfect.
Or so she thought.
Now, Warner wasn’t coming home, and she somehow found herself with a first-class ticket to Switzerland to spend the holidays with her grumpy boss.
What she didn’t expect was for him to drop to one knee and propose in front of the entire company.

Declan - When Declan Alexander is up for a promotion, he will do anything necessary to get a leg up. That includes pretending to be engaged to his beautiful assistant. He has to prove he is a family man, and Claire is just the way to do that. Things start to heat up in the snow, and lines get blurred.
This is all fake after all, right?
Magic things happen in the mountains at Christmas time.

I am super picky when it comes to Christmas books.
🎅🏻🎄🇨🇭
I need plot. And not just jam packed candy cane spice.
And thankfully this gave me the Hallmark vibes I love.
Without being overly cheesy or anything tho.
It was sweet at times.
Banter & humor sprinkled in.

You’ve got boss Declan who needs someone to accompany him to his work trip to Switzerland. Enter his assistant Claire, who they have barely been personal for all the three years she’s worked for him.

Sprinkle in a little Christmas magic and what do you know they get to know each other. Claire being the one who loves the holiday and traditions gets our hottie boss to come out of his shell.

He’s up for a promotion, so why not fake an engagement to show the boss he’s a family man? What could go wrong when it’s fake right? 😉

Claire is a hyper-organized assistant to a grumpy boss who barely speaks to her. When he demands that she accompany him on a work trip out of the country over Christmas, she begrudgingly goes. Is it still considered fake if feelings are caught?

I loved it! It was the perfect mix of Christmas fun and romance. I enjoyed watching their relationship bloom. It was a quick read because I was so into the story. Definitely had some laugh out loud moments along with the swooning.

The spice was nice. Mostly fade out scenes but still good. They definitely had chemistry and the banter was cute. I am a sucker for a bossy and possessive mmc who also has sweet moments.

Overall, it was a sweet Christmas romance between a boss and his longtime assistant. Five stars ✨

This is what holiday book dreams are made of.

Every book I read by @kathryncoin I find a new favorite. This one was no exception!! And I’m very much a Halloween girly so the fact I jumped into this one and couldn’t put it down is saying something for me.

The two work together and Claire isn’t sure Declan even knows her name let alone anything else about about her before he threatens her job if she doesn’t come on this holiday vacation with him. Not only did she just get thrown into this holiday vacation unexpectedly, he decides to propose right after getting there and ask her to “just go along with it.”

I’m sure you can imagine how the rest goes, the feelings and build up is unmatched though and you need to read it!

🌲 Christmas Romance
🌲 Forced Proximity

Thanks again @kathryncoin for the eARC of this amazing read!

⭐️⭐️⭐️ARC REVIEW⭐️⭐️⭐️

First Off, thank you Kathryn and her team for the opportunity to have an ARC for this book.

Now, first few chapters and I am already loving the chemistry, the banter and just the vibe of both characters towards each other. I am also already feeling the struggle for Claire.

But ALSO?! Why am I already swooning and screaming so much from the chemistry of Declan and Claire first few chapters alone?! I really love how, its not the typical boss- secretary fake relationship route, that immediately you can feel that theres care and genuine interest that they have for each other.

“I realized then, I’d do anything to keep that wide smile on Claire’s face.”

Oh Declan! He just kept making me love him more as the chapters progressed, I love how he slowly (but surely) fell in love with Claire, and how with this quote , how his thoughts show us how deep he has fallen for claire and how he would do everything in his ability to make sure Claire feels loved and noticed and lives her life. But also, go on claire! Live life! Enjoy life’ enjoy the spontaneity of it and the mess of it and enjoy Declan! I relate a bit to what Claire struggles with in life, the feeling of wanting to have control of or atleast be aware of everything but also want to still live spontaneously. Its such a hard place to be, but I love how she slowly overcame it and I love how Declan really just was it for her. There was a perfect amount of everything jn this book, the storyline, the romance, the spice, the length (🫣👀), that it was not hard to read! This book has reminded me of my love of christmas romance books and I’m so glad it was this book that did it, cause it did not disappoint!

I highly suggest you read this book! You won’t regret it!

This is the best book to read during the holiday season! I am absolutely in love with Kathryn Coin’s writing style and I have been dying to read another book written by her. I was lucky enough to be chosen as an arc reader and this book did not disappoint at all! It even got me excited for the holiday season and for Christmas to come early! 🤭

This is the story of Claire, who is known to be a Type A organizer, who loves to color-code everything and make sure everything is perfect and organized. She has always been a rule-follower, and always makes sure to do everything by the book. She has been working for her boss, Declan, who she finds very handsome but feels like he barely acknowledges her. Claire has been looking forward to seeing her younger sister for Christmas but when Warner can’t come anymore, she is struggling to be alone with her parents. Until her boss Declan lets her know that she has to accompany him to Switzerland for almost a whole month.

Declan is known as being quiet, handsome, working late and straight to the point. The only goal he has in mind is gunning for the promotion to lead the New York office and beat his rival Tom. His assistant Claire has organized his itinerary for his girlfriend and himself to enjoy and promote the family image that his bosses are looking for in their candidates. However, when he arrives at his apartment, his girlfriend is all packed up and breaking up with him because he has been emotionally distant. Panicked, Declan tells Claire that she needs to pack and hands her a list of clothing items she will need for the Switzerland trip.

Despite them going as co-workers, their walls start to break down between them and you can sense the tension and when they start to feel like they can be more than co-workers. At one of the events, Declan finds out that Tom’s girlfriend is actually his ex-girlfriend and the daughter of their boss. Once again, Declan wants to demonstrate to the whole world that he can be a family man and decides to propose to Claire in front of everyone, and she says yes! What started as a fake engagement between two co-workers, started to develop into something more and I absolutely gobbled it up!! I loved that both Claire and Declan start to decide that there is more than what they are used to. And it takes this trip to open up the door and figure out what they feel for each other! I absolutely recommend reading this book this season because Christmas in Switzerland has now become an absolute goal of mine 😍

I feel like this book gave me a crossover of Hallmark-Passionflix vibes, and I loved it. If this had been featured on any of these two streaming platforms, I would have watched it without a doubt.

The real magic of A Merry Little Alpine Love Affair lies in its exploration of vulnerability, acceptance, and the gradual peeling back of emotional armour.
Set against the winter wonderland with snowy mountains and the beautiful landscape of Switzerland, it centres on Claire, the overly meticulous assistant to Declan, her grumpy boss who hardly ever knows her. She reluctantly agrees to a work trip to Switzerland when he insists on having her as his plus one, with an exclusive arrangement.

Despite her life's challenges, Claire's upbeat demeanour authentically exudes charm and humour. The most memorable parts of this book, in my opinion, were her methods and objectives to inspire Declan to live spontaneously. Watching Declan eventually open up was such an enjoyable experience. From beginning to end, their romantic chemistry endures, and those sweet moments offer solace and warmth, longing for hope and simplicity in life.

A Merry Little Alpine Love Affair is a playful yet uplifting reminder that love often grows in unexpected places—sometimes between two people who, at first glance, couldn’t be more different. For readers who enjoy stories with lighthearted perspectives on passion, career goals, and the value of finding balance in life, this is the ideal Christmas book.

Receiving a gratis Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book was an honour, and I'm presenting my candid opinion based on my own experience. I am eternally grateful to Kathryn Coin for entrusting me with reading this book beforehand.

Why would an author describe the MMC as an “asshole” who never makes eye contact and barely speaks to his assistant of three years in the first chapter and then have him being all kind, silly and calling her cutesy/intimate nicknames a few pages later? She supposedly doesn’t even think he knows her name after three years, but then he’s all sweet and deeply interested in her suddenly? It made no sense. Why describe a character one way and then completely flip his entire personality with no explanation whatsoever? Did the airport put a spell on him? There was no growing connection between them, no softening over time as he got to know her and shared himself with her… nothing! One minute he’s abrupt and barely acknowledging her for three years and the next he’s calling her “Claire Bear” and acting like her bestie. And this was BEFORE they were at the resort or knew they needed to “fake date” for him to get his promotion so that’s not why his personality changed either. It just completely pulled me out of the story and made their relationship development feel completely disingenuous.

In addition, the story itself was very forced and formulaic… a jealous ex girlfriend, a last minute proposal to his assistant so he can look like a “family man” and get a promotion, he ignores her for three years until she wears her hair down and suddenly she’s the hottest woman in the room and he’s obsessed with her… you get the idea.

I didn’t know anything about these characters and I did not care whether they ended up together or not. There are so many cute wintery/Christmasy books out there, but I’d personally skip this one.

✨I received this ARC and these are my own opinions and thank you to Kathryn Coin for picking me to review her book✨

Claire‘s favourite holiday is Christmas with her family and finally being back with her sister since she moved, she finds out that her sister won’t be coming home for Christmas

Claire is Declan‘s assistant. She was shocked that he even knew her name when he asked her to all expenses paid work trip to Switzerland.

After Declan bumped into his ex at an event in Switzerland, he finds out that he is up for a promotion and his boss is looking for a ‘family man’ for the role, he has a crazy idea and asks Claire to go along with it and be his fake fiancée for the entire trip.

Claire agrees to the agreement as she has people back home calling her boring and doesn’t do anything ‘out there’ and stays in a comfort zone and never explores out of it.

During the trip, they both realise that they have feelings for each other but they had agreed that ‘what happens in Switzerland, stays in Switzerland’

I LOVED this book! This is my first Kathryn Coin book and I have added some of her books to my ‘TBR’ list as I loved her writing style and it was an easy read and had me sucked in from the beginning. I also haven’t read many Christmas themed books and I loved that side of it also!

I highly Recommend this book!

This book was pure perfection and an absolute 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵-𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 this holiday season. I mean — 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘧𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘳 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘴 𝘈𝘭𝘱𝘴 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘢𝘴? Say less.

I’m a total Kathryn Coin fan. I fell hard for her 𝘊𝘰𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘊𝘰𝘢𝘴𝘵 series, so I knew I’d love this one too. But I did 𝙣𝙤𝙩 expect this to be her 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘺𝘦𝘵. Kathryn somehow managed to pack so much heart, humor, and swoon into such a short book — and it didn’t feel rushed.

Claire lives for Christmas and can’t wait to spend it with her family. But when her younger sister can’t make it home and her grumpy boss insists she accompany him on an all-expense-paid company trip to Switzerland, things get… interesting. Especially when they realize how good they are together — both in and out of the office.

Picture this: a cozy ski chalet in the Swiss Alps, every festive holiday activity you could dream of, sparkling banter, gorgeous decorations, and a 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘣𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵. I devoured this book in less than 24 hours. Declan and Claire’s chemistry was palpable, and I was rooting for them from page one.

Add this to your holiday TBR immediately — you can thank me later. Consider it an early Christmas gift. And, thank you to Kathryn Coin for the opportunity to read this ARC. 🎄

The Perfect Holiday Read!
If you're a Christmas lover, this book is an absolute must-read! From the very first page, I was hooked. The story is fun, heartwarming, and full of festive charm. Claire is incredibly relatable, and Declan? Total book boyfriend material!

The writing is smooth and captivating, making it the perfect cozy read to enjoy under a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate by the Christmas tree. I especially loved how the side characters added depth and warmth to the story, making the whole experience feel complete.

When Claire is sent on an all-expenses-paid work trip to Switzerland with her grumpy boss, she doesn’t expect much, until he proposes in front of the entire company. Declan, up for a big promotion, is willing to fake an engagement to get ahead… but the snowy Alps have a way of turning fake feelings into something real.

This book gave me total Hallmark vibes in the best way possible. The chemistry between Claire and Declan was electric. It’s a sweet, swoony, and slightly spicy holiday romance that hits all the right notes.

If you love:

Fake engagements
Snowy destinations
Feel-good holiday magic

When Claire gets roped into a Christmas trip to the Swiss Alps with her swoon worthy boss, she sets out to be different. Taking chances and getting out of her comfort zone was the goal, and it landed her in a fake engagement with Declan, her boss that she knows nothing about.

Fake engagement is one of my all time favorite tropes and Kathryn Coin does it so well! Marrying this trope with a dreamy Christmas setting was the Hallmark-esque story of my dreams. It’s easy for this trope to fall flat, but Coin does a great job of keeping their relationship interesting by using the setting and side characters to her advantage.

I really liked Claire as a character. She was extremely humble and sweet. Her journey of branching out and pushing the boundaries of her comfort zone was enjoyable to read. Declan fit well with her, always seeing the interesting side of her even when she felt she was boring. Their chemistry formed slowly, but really exploded when the time came!

This book was a perfect, quick Christmas read that should definitely be added to your holiday reading! Loved it! Thank you Kathryn Coin for the eARC!

this was the perfect holiday romance to kick of my season of holiday reads. I fell in love with Clair and Declan from their first interaction when he barely made eye contact with her. Their love for one another blossomed fast but, it was so beautiful.
Claire is Declan's assistant at a huge marketing company and, she is his plus one on the annual companies' holiday get away in the Swiss Alps. He is in competition for a huge promotion that would be a huge boost in his career and, decides to propose to Claire before talking to her about what his plans are but he is willing to do anything to ensure he gets the job he 'really' wants.
They fall into such a natural rhythm of course and, lines are blurred fast as they realize they are both head over heels for one another. His ex-girlfriend is the CEO of the company's daughter and she is very spiteful and, does everything in her power to put a wedge in Claire and, Declan's relationship.
i truly loved every single second of this book as an ARC read ;)

This book
1. Cured my reading slump I was in
And 2. Is the perfect cutesy holiday read

I absolutely DEVOURED this book and this storyline.

I feel like I resonated with Claire a little too hard.
Like always worried about my quirks and what people think, having the touch of OCD, just never trusting and feeling like you weren’t enough. Yeah all me.

But Declan, freaking Declan. He was MADE FOR HER. Just like she was made for him.
They balanced each other out so well.
They each brought something to the table that the other truly needed and I absolutely loved it.

Their little alpine love affair was everything
Watching them fall in love the entire time (but trying to deny it) was beautiful.
But the break up?good god I wasn’t expecting it and it lowkey broke my heart.
But the make up!? That shit MADE ME WEEP 😭 we love a man who grovels and grovels wellllllll

Overall, I think everyone needs to read this book and just, let yourself feel the Christmas magic alright

(p.s Sarah sucked and I wanted to throw my kindle every time she was mentioned)

What to expect:
-Boss x Assistant
-Fake Engagement
-Holiday work trip
-Opposites attract
-Millionaire MMC
-Christmas Romance
-He Falls First

This book was so cute. It was the perfect Hallmark vibes book just in time for the winter. This book had fake dating (one of my favs) and was not overly Christmas-y. On first impressions, Declan is the broody boss who barely looks at his assistant. Claire is a type A girlie who works tirelessly and is trying to start her career and work up in the ranks. This book takes place in Switzerland where Claire and Declan make a pact to fake date for the 3 weeks that they are on vacation during which they fall in love. I do love the aspect that Declan is a subtle millionaire. He has money and does use it but it is not a central focus in this story which feels true to the type of love they have. This book will get you in the mood for the holidays and I would recommend reading on the couch during a crisp day!

This book comes just in time for Christmas season! Christmas is my favorite season and this book made it even better with giving the hallmark movie vibes- coming from a girl who loves hallmark Christmas movies. 👏🏼👏🏼

When your boss Declan has a company trip to Switzerland and needs someone to accompany him, what’s to happen? Claire who is a by the book, plans everything down to the tee who thinks she’s boring gets convinced to go.

Claire being the one who LOVES Christmas and Declan being somewhat of a grinch. But that’s all about to change when the magic of Christmas in Switzerland happens to bring them together and out of their shells.

what a sweet holiday read. so getting me in the mood for sure!
this has the destination Hallmark holiday romance. it takes place in Switzerland.
I'm a huge boss/executive assistant fan. and this one filed that role for me. two people who went on holiday vacation with the agreement she was going under the thought of his girlfriend but she is husband executive assistant. he never looked at her the whole time she was his employee until Switzerland happened. he fell fast and hard. and she did also.
this book was a fun way to start my holiday reading. it was on the shorter side not an excessive amount of drama and fit the bill for the boss employee trope.
this was a new to me author and I look forward to future reads.

Loved it so much! Bingeworthy!

Okay no, this book is so good! I love the premise, it has a lot of popular tropes but it executes them all so well.

The character development, pacing, the plot structure... all super strong, I BINGED this one.

The chapter titles had me laughing out loud, every single time.

Declan pretending to be calm on the flight for her, swoon. "Don't call me Dex" moment was soooo good!

I actually hate the billionaire, shower her with lavish things scenes but the diamon necklace scene is so good. Perfect actually, the way she is so embarrassed and hes nonchalant. He didn't make a hihe deal, but also wanted her to keep it. It felt real and relatable instead of cheesy.

I could go on and on, but instead I'll just say this: READ THIS!

This is ADORABLE.

I loved Declan a so much. A grumpy boss man who wears lumberjack pajama bottoms, can cook, and has to be touching Claire at all times? Sign me up!

Claire is a bit OCD, but she keeps Declan’s calendar in perfect order. When he needs her to go to Switzerland with him over the holidays, she takes the push from her sister and parents to let loose and enjoy herself.

What neither of them expect is to fall in love.

I am so glad i was able to read this. Sometimes you need a quick little holiday sweetness 🥹

ARC Review!

A Merry Little Alpine Love Affair was such a cozy and fun holiday read.

The Swiss mountain setting was fun, and I could practically smell the snow and hot chocolate. Who doesn't love a fake engagement trope? It was predictable but still so entertaining to watch unfold.

Claire and Declan's chemistry had the perfect mix of tension, banter, and sweetness. I loved how the romance developed naturally without feeling too rushed. Some parts were a little cliche for me, but honestly adds to the charm. Overall, it's a great feel-good winter read that leaves you smiling by the end.

This was a cute and easy holiday read, hard to put down. I loved the magical Christmas backdrop in the Swiss Alps. Claire was amazing, Declan’s behavior on the other hand left a lot to be desired. Rather than respecting her autonomy, he cornered her emotionally—first by threatening her career, and later by springing a proposal on her without any warning or consideration for her feelings or choice. His passivity while Sarah continuously demeaned her was frustrating to read, and his dishonesty about the kiss only added to the growing list of red flags. Claire deserved better and I would have loved to see Declan grovel more.

This book was adorable. I'm a huge fan of a good Christmas romance. and this definitely delivered. Claire has to go to Switzerland with her boss Declan. What she doesn't know is he's up for a promotion, but it looks best of your a family man. so low and behold he gets down on one knee and decides she's going to be his fake fiancé. lol this was just so funny. Claire helps Declan break out of that professional shell he's stuck on and learn to enjoy the holiday moments.
it was the perfect holiday romance. and these two were absolutely perfect for each other.

I DEVOURED this book! I was obsessed by the first chapter. The characters of Declan and Claire are well developed and I found myself invested in their story. The story was so well written it just flowed off the page.

I love Christmas books in general but this was lighter on the Christmas focus and more on a workplace/vacation focus so if you aren’t into Christmas books I think you’d still enjoy this. This is my first Kathryn Coin book but it won’t be my last!

I received an arc of this book and I’m leaving my honest review. Seriously read this book.

This book was everything!
There were so many moments that had me laughing out loud, and the banter between Declan and Claire was perfection. It felt like a true Hallmark movie…but with a little dose of spice! I loved that their story wasn’t rushed at all, it unfolded so naturally.

⭐️ 10/10 recommend adding this to your holiday TBR!

P.S. Please tell me I’m not the only one who wanted to punch Sarah more than once?! 🥴
