I approach books like these with extreme caution, but I enjoyed this one! There’s so much woo woo out there, built on the foundations of unsolid science and schemes that either want your money or set you up for failure. This one was worth its weight - so much evidence based science (as a microbiologist and a chronically ill person it was refreshing!).
I was diagnosed with lupus and my days are often filled with uncertainty and a plethora or random symptoms. It can be hard to navigate which is why I think everyone diagnosed with a long standing condition(or even those that don’t) should honestly have access to a heath psychologist or at the very minimum - this book!!
It was enlightening and well written, finding a perfect balance between affirming, realistic and respectful. I found this book both a comfort and a great resource and it’s my solemn wish that all those out there are struggling, find this book in their path!
I had the audiobook and it was really well narrated and engaging. I would also definitely recommend a physical copy as I often found myself eager to see the figures and interact with the tasks the author mentions! I thoroughly recommend this for those either experiencing illness, someone who knows and wants to understand the struggles of others and health professionals alike.
Thank you to the author and publisher for this book on NetGalley in return for my honest thoughts and review.
A really interesting and useful book about the power of the mind to help to heal chronic pain, illness and so on. With plenty of relevant case examples and helpful tips along with scientifically backed evidence, this book is well worth a read for anyone who is or has suffered with any kind of health condition when other treatment modalities have not been curative. The link between the mind and the body is thankfully now becoming increasingly recognised by mainstream medicine, and this fascinating book will go a long way towards helping more people to discover this for themselves. Excellently narrated by the author too. With grateful thanks to NetGalley, Macmillan and Dr Sula Windgassen for my advance copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review
As someone who works in women’s and pelvic health who regularly reads books like this to continuously learn but also to have great book recommendations for my patients. This book being so well-rounded, biopsychosocial in nature and just truly caring was amazing. It hit all the points I wanted it to, and it even taught me a few things!
It does naturally have some scientific explanation, in the simplest way possible. However I believe anyone with lower health literacy may struggle to digest this easily
I would recommend getting the physical book instead of audio-booking it
This book was on my most anticipated books of 2026 list - I was really excited for this one. However, I felt like this book didn't actually deliver on what the title says. There was a lot of personal anecdotes from Windgassen and case studies - but I never felt that there was a resolution or much science to back it up - this is what I wanted going in. It was all just a bit meh and wishy washy - I was left wanting so much more.
