Calston Cove #4

Note to Self

Rate this book
Note to Self

Ever since his brother Josh died, Trent’s parents have been obsessed with him getting a wife and providing them with grandchildren. That they turned their backs on Josh’s daughter, Willow, still hurts Trent. With a statement that closed the door on his life with his parents’ bullying, and the end of a useless relationship, Trent heads down to Calston Cove, where his brother-in-law Merrick and his daughter have settled after Josh’s death.

He craves a new life and new opportunities, a chance to find himself again. What he doesn’t expect is Merlin, the gorgeous man with the Colgate smile and the charm that goes with it.

Merlin has settled into his new life as a landscaper and loves life in Calston Cove and the new friends he’s made. Literally, bumping into the cute blond outside Merrick’s gallery has his pulse rising and interest piqued.

The question is, can Trent trust this handsome man’s words, or is he another charmer who only wants one thing from him?

Merlin thinks Trent is the man for him and is prepared to prove it.

Note to Self is the last book in the Calston Cove series. You can read it as a standalone, but you’ll enjoy it more when you’ve read the other three books. You can expect an instant attraction, but a hesitancy to trust not just the handsome man, but to believe his heart. Merlin will accept nothing but a happy ending.

Awe… I loved this! A perfect ending to a fantastic series. I loved Trent and Merlin! Trent, sweet and a blusher that got done wrong and hurt by an ex and I don’t even want to mention Trent’s parents, grrrrr…. Merlin, sweet as well and a flirt and has an eye on Trent since the first time he saw him( Trent accidentally bumping into him) and they see each other a couple of times before Merlin asks Trent out and it’s love at first sight for them both, but there’s obstacles and emotions to get through but they stick together and get help from their friends. Trent is a newbie in Calston Cove and goes there to visit his brother in law and niece since he hasn’t seen them since he’s brothers passing and he wants away from his parents. It was great to read more on Merrick(Willow) and Drew. The others to of course. I’m happy Trent decided to stay and do his art and have his happy with Merlin and their daughter years later, so sweet, I was in happy tears. A wonderful series! A Must Read, but read the series in order!

Trent and Merrick are absolutely on fire. These two have instant chemistry, but neither man is sure how to act on it. Merrick is interested in the long term, but Trent needs convincing and some building up first. I loved seeing so much of Merrick and Drew. Their story was amazing and Trent’s was just as good. His parents are toxic, as already proven. There is so much more in Calston Cove than just his brother in law. His own chance at life and love is waiting if he is brave enough to grab it.

This was a bit of a strange experience. I did enjoy the story! But I loved book 1 in this related series world, Life After Love, and was expecting similar smoothness here. The book felt choppy/kind of all over the place? Different from the first. But I still liked the characters and wanted them to be together.

Trent is Done. With his parents and his utter crap ex, whose manipulative ways diminished Trent’s confidence and dulled his shine. So. Trent is off to Devon in the countryside, to think about his next steps and explore his desire to pursue art and reconnect with his late brother’s widower (Merrick, MC book 1) and his niece, the adorable Willow.

Merlin (yes, Merlin! Kinda silly, but, I loved it) is a local Devon landscape contractor whose dream is to own his own nursery.

The two cross paths…and keep crossing paths. The plot is simple, low angst, two men who see each other and think…Yes please.

Well, for Trent it isn’t that easy, his confidence has been undercut, and it takes a lot of reassurance on Merlin’s part that he is 100% into Trent and wants to see where this goes. Their chemistry is simmering and the connection believable.

The story is written oddly, with one time blending into the next, rather than creating distinct scenes of each moment; I was confused a few times and had to go back and re-read to catch the rather weak transitions indicating time passing. I don’t remember this being an issue in the previous book and was puzzled as this one felt more rough-draft/unedited on that front, rather than a smooth read.

Trent also waffled a lot; he’d be ecstatic one moment, and regressing to doubt the next, and I got a bit of whiplash from him, it was a tad repetitive. His reaction to Merlin’s invite to take next steps forward in the relationship was kinda weird/didn’t really make sense to me, like, it should have led to some revelation/reason for doubt, and then was nothing? Hmm.

Ultimately though, I enjoyed seeing them together and was rooting for them.

OM drama from Trent’s one-dimensional ex goes off the rails a bit, with violence, felt cliché, but, he’s the bad guy so I didn’t really care. Drama from Trent’s homophobic parents.

Things fall into place quite idealistically for both Trent and Merlin; no bumps in the road to success as an artist or a nursery owner, and the fate of Trent’s ex seemed overly simplified. But hey, that’s the fantasy of it all.

HEA, strangers to lovers, small-town, change of place romance. No others, OM drama from Trent’s ex, but no irritating ill-timed insertions of info on past lovers for Merlin. Includes a years-later epilogue. Safe for me! Recommended.

My thanks to Gay Romance Reviews for the ARC; this is my free and impartial opinion.

MY OPINION: I haven’t read any of J.J. Harper's books, but if they are all similar to this one, I will have them as one of my go-to authors for sweet and peaceful. Overall, this was a love story that made me feel good.

Trent is over the life he was leading. Having followed the rules set forth by demanding parents and imposed by his own desires for the love of his family. He was over it when his ‘boyfriend’, who had been treating him poorly, stomped on his last ounce of patience. He went to find his niece and brother-in-law, whom he had lost touch with when his brother had passed away. It was time to embrace what he wanted in life, instead of what was expected of him. This put him in the quiet seaside town of Colston Cove, United Kingdom (certainly a chance I am writing that wrong). He was rejected by not only the man he had been with for three years, but also his parents, because he was bi, and that was unacceptable.

We meet Merlin, who is also restarting his life but has things figured out. Falling for someone wasn’t in the plan, but when he gets to know Trent, he is all in. Trent is more timid with giving away his feelings. Having just come out of a bad relationship, and his parents being completely against him and his life choices he didn’t trust people.

There are a few tense moments, but overall, the story is simply two men getting to know each other and falling in love. They support each other in the changes they both have in their lives, and embrace a friend group that is there for them both.

I liked reading a book that was feel-good and sweet. Very low-angst. One of the reasons I read is to simply enjoy seeing people find their HEA, and this book delivers. If you are looking for something that takes you away from the world, allowing you to enjoy seeing two guys letting go of their troubles, and finding a life that makes them happy, this is a great book for that.

Enjoyable palette cleanser of a book, that takes you out of the world for a minute. I’m glad I got the opportunity to read it. I don’t think the other books in the series are necessary to enjoy this one, but you see enough of those couples in this one to want to go back and read their story.

I fell in love with Calson Cove in book 1 and this is a great story to finish the series off.

We come full circle in a way, the first book starts with Trent learning about his parent's vile behaviour to Merrick and Willow and here we have his own story how he works his way through his own feelings and disappointments with them.

Timewise the story starts before book 3 and then overlaps but you can read them in the order of publishing.

Trent and Merlin are a great couple, what starts out as instant attraction moves to feelings and love.

Trent has tons of baggage, not just the dissolution of his already bad relationship with his parents but also the loss of confidence after a disastorous relationship with an ex.
He feels he can't let himself love someone as he will be disappointed and left alone again.

Merlin has new start in Calston Cove with his garden service and building a nursery. He can be a bit pushy and intense but I love that he steps back and doesn't let Trent get overwhelmed but stands beside him and helping when Trent is having doubts and supports and believes in him to not hide his paintings.

They are both well written, I could have taken Trent and wrapped him tightly and give him a hug but luckily Merlin did the job perfectly.
There is chemistry and while both question the intensity and fastness of their feelings, it comes over as real and deep.

It's great to see Merrick and Drew again. I will miss them all.

Trent moves to be nearer to his niece and her Dad and to get away from his parents, who abandoned their grandchild after their son died because she was no longer his.

His ex was verbally abusive, and coupled with his parent’s disapproval, he’s taking time to sort himself out.

Merlin is a gardener who hopes to own a nuresery and is working with his friend Drew to find a spot. Drew’s husband is Trent’s brother in law, so the men meet and are interested in getting to know each other.

They date, quickly become boyfriends and fall in love. Trent is an artist and his work goes up in his brother in law’s gallery, while Merlin gets a prefab house and starts growing things on the land he buys.

Sadly, Trent’s parents don’t accept his bisexuality, as they didn’t accept his brother’s sexuality, but they lose out on family for the rest of their lives.

The ex shows up at Trent’s first gallery opening and stabs Merlin, but he’s arrested and Merlin recovers, so there is no longer a threat to either of them.

I like the story of Merlin and Trent, but their relationship is fast and declaring their love didn’t strike as real enough for me. As well, Trent’s terrible parents don’t seem to affect him except for one painting he makes, so his feelings aren’t dealt with.

I received this ARC for free and am pleased to provide my honest review with appreciation.

I'm so glad to read Trent finally get a HEA, after reading him in Merrick's book and the way he is Treated by his parents.
In this book, he's final reached his end, having to walk out and take time for himself. Away from their cruel words and impossible expectations. He heads for Calston Cove, Merrick and Willow, and hopefully some peace. Along with that, he also literally stumbled into Merlin. He also moved to Calston for a fresh start, a different dream to what he'd been living and, so far, it's better than expected. Meeting Trent only makes it better.
Both men seem to have the same affliction of falling too fast but Trent is trying to learn from his past, and his terrible last relationship. His self confidence is in the gutter, he doesn't trust others anymore and believes the worst is always coming. Merlin has his work cut out for him to get Trent to believe in them and himself. What turns out to be his true passion, as opposed to what his parents chose for him as a career, was quite unexpected but totally perfect as an expressive outlet.
It's a wonderful end to what has been a great series. I hope we are back to visit at some point to catch up on these amazing HEAs. I am especially a fan of the end of this epilogue!
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

A BEAUTIFUL ROUNDING OFF OF THE SERIES!💕

Merlin was mentioned in the previous book- the sexy landscaper and friend of Merrick and Drew.

Now we get the inside story of how Merlin finds his perfect person when Merricks ex brother-in law and friend- science school teacher and pseudo artist Trent comes to unwind and clear his head from a toxic break up… and toxic homophobic parents…

“Note to self—no more bastards, even if they’re disguised as hot men.”

Their meet-cute was sweet and awkward but their paths crossed time and time again, with having the same friend circle…

Their friendship was quick and their connection and chemistry off the charts!

Their journey was fraught with insecurities, self flagellations and a toxic ex and homophobic parents that wouldn’t let go on Trent’s side but with the beautiful support from Merlin and advice and help from Merrick and our established couples with their extended families , their story will unfold emotionally with beautiful epilogues years into their futures!

I loved Calstone Cove and the wonderful characters we came to know and sadly say goodbye to!

I voluntarily received an ARC from GRR and the author for an honest non biased review.

Fitting End to a Wonderful Series💜

What a lovely way to end what has been a wonderful series. I have fallen in love with all the men from Calston Cove and the perfect partners they have found forever love with and the setting on the Devon coastline was perfect.

This book ended with Merlin, a landscape gardener and a very troubled Trent, a science teacher from London, who is in need of a life change away from his abusive ex and his nasty homophobic parents and so he heads to Calston Cove to spend time with his brother in law Merrick and his niece Willow and he is hoping to resurrect his real passion, art.

He literally bumps into Merlin in the street days after he arrives and the chemistry is instant. Merlin is the most beautiful and patient man and the way he handled Trent’s massive insecurity complex was nothing short of a miracle and it even began to rub off on him a bit.

Merlin and Trent were lovely, kind men who definitely deserved their HEA and the heat between them was intense. I loved catching up with all the other gorgeous men and of course the adorable toddler Willow who has appeared in all the books, and this was a perfect end to the series.

Possibly my favourite of the series

This series is the essence of small town romance. Locals and incomers meet and fall in love in beautiful Calston Cove. Actual family and found family are all-important, as are the adopted children of the couples.
My heart bled for Trent, his self-confidence non-existent thanks to his atrocious parents and his truly abysmal boyfriend. The unforgiveable behaviour of all three of them was heinous. He was just one big ball of nerves, uncertain of everything and everybody, unable to believe in any good thing that mght come his way.
Merlin was Trent's opposite. Comfortable in his own skin, happy in his job and his life, confident and calm.
Instant attraction when they literally bumped into each other grew and changed into a lasting love. Yes, it happened quickly but I believed in it as Trent had lots of qualms, hesitation being his default setting while he worked though the negative crap in his head. They were so sweet together but also very hot.
I loved Trent's art. When authors describe artworks in their stories, all I want to do is see it. Trent's pictures sound so beautiful.
This has been a sweet series overall but not without angst, making each story more believable. I loved the epilogue that gave us a glimpse into the future and ended on a happy note.

Note to Self is the latest addition to the Calston Cove series. It also centers on Trent’s emotional healing after family betrayal and a damaging past relationship. His journey is tender and raw, especially as he learns to trust again with Merlin—a newcomer whose quiet strength and unwavering support help Trent rediscover his confidence and embrace love. Their chemistry is intense yet genuine, and the story beautifully captures the power of vulnerability, patience, and emotional growth. Trent and Merlin’s connection begins with instant attraction but blossoms into something deeper and more meaningful. Their chemistry is palpable, and while they both question the speed and depth of their feelings, it never feels rushed or superficial. It’s raw, real, and deeply satisfying. The characters are so well written that you’ll want to reach into the pages and give Trent a comforting hug—but thankfully, Merlin does that job with grace and love. This story is a beautiful reminder that healing is possible, and love—when nurtured with patience and understanding—can be transformative.

Losing his brother was tough and having his folks not acknowledge his brother's partner and child made it tougher. Especially since they keep pressuring Trent to provide them with grandchildren when they are ignoring the one that they have. Trent has been through a lot between the demanding parents and the crappy partner that he just moved on from. He goes in search of his brother-in-law and niece and when he finds them, moves to Colston Cove and that is also where he meets Merlin. Trent is rebuilding both in terms of understanding what he wants and being more attentive to that and in learning to trust again after an unsatisfying relationship. Healing happens for Trent in Colston Cove and although the depth of feeling that he and Merlin experience comes following an instant attraction, they realize that what they are building is genuine. This was lovely and a nice way up from where things started for Trent when the story began.

Trent has come to Calston Cove to reunite with his brother-in-law Merrick and niece Willow and figure out his next step in life. The first person he literally runs into is Merlin a former rugby player and now running a landscaping business. It's a case of lust at first sight, but coming off a bad breakup, Trent is currently off the market. Fate has other ideas, Merlin and Merrick are close friends, and Merlin has the patience of Job.
Trent's parents have too many opinions on Trent's life. Since his brother Josh's death his mother is obsessed with Trent getting married and producing grandchildren. She is also determined that he become headmaster at the school where he teaches. His parents had also demanded he abandon the art he loved and embrace science.
Trent has six weeks in Calston Cove to decide his future. With the love and encouragement he receives from Merlin and Merrick, Trent embarks on a future that's fulfilling.

I enjoyed Trent and Merlin's story very much.
Merlin is a hot, smart and talented man. Trent is a hot, smart talented man. Perfectly matched.
Their instant connection...heated connection I'd better say, and how quickly they became what the other needed and wanted was a beautiful thing to see.
Though all of the things Trent had been through with his parents and his ex was hard to read about seeing him work through things, stand up to them and make the life he wanted was fantastic.
Through this story we get happy, sexy, easy and difficult times. We also get to see Trent come into his own and follow his dreams.
Yes, there are some awful things that happen but afterwards we have a deep love, strong friendships and a family that will always offer love and a safe harbor.
I don't like to give a lot away with my reviews, I feel the reader deserves to discover the good, bad and awful. Some of the experiences will be hard but the love outweighs the evil.

I always enjoy a trip to Calston Cove and this one was as enjoyable as ever! While a standalone, it knits together well with the other books in the series and continues the evolution of the lives of the town and friends group. In this story, Trent knows it's time to visit Calston Cove to reconnect with his deceased brother's husband and to meet his niece.

While visiting, Trent meets Merlin, also a recent transplant to Calston Cove. Merlin is the town's gardener/landscaper, but he has dreams of opening his own greenhouse to supply organic vegetables to the surrounding area. When he literally bumps into Trent, it is attraction at first sight for Merlin. He can tell, however, that Trent needs time and a slow approach.

This book has a beautiful, low-angst relationship arc full of healing, passion, good time, and love. The HEA is especially satisfying. So good!

Sweet and satisfying! Trent, had fallen out with his parents over their abandonment of his niece, Willow. Willow, is the daughter of his deceased brother, Josh and his widower Merrick. Trent moves to Calston Cove hoping to start the next phase of his life while dragging heavy baggage. He looks forward to connecting and building relationships with Merrick and Willow. He meets Merlin. who seems too good to be true. Merlin, is also a newcomer who works as a landscaper. He is dragging a bit of baggage, but he has an open mind. Merlin and Trent balance each other, but trust is a roadblock and makes Merlin work for it and Trent work to lower his boundaries. Good story, it captures you and wraps you up in a warm blanket. Good feel good story, great flow. Nicely done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I have really enjoyed the family found series and this story just added to it. Trent lost his brother and then his niece when his homophobic parents didn't approve of gay men adopting. Years later he spends the summer in Calston Cove to rediscover himself and think about his future. On arriving, he immediately bumps into Merlin a hunky landscaper who tries to win him over. Because of his past relationship, Trent doesn't believe it when Merlin says nice things to him. Merlin is smitten straight away and has a task set for himself to try to win Trent over before the end of the summer.

I loved the banter, really enjoyed seeing characters form previous books and loved how they all worked to protect Trent and give him the confidence he needed to discover his real passion and stand up to his parents.

Trent is a man who has been beaten down by life. He has lost his beloved brother to cancer, watched his parents turn their backs on his brother in law and niece, only to pin all their hopes for prestige and grandchildren on him. All while hiding his sexuality and dealing with a boyfriend who wants to keep him hidden. After coming out to his parents, their reaction and a breakup with the man who never loved him, Trent abandons London for Calston Cove, hoping the seaside town that saved his brother-in-law will work its magic for him. He meets Merlin, the local gardener. I loved that this is a low-ish angst story. There is some tension, but it is from sources outside the relationship. Merlin was clear about his feelings and was open while pursuing Trent. I enjoyed reading a story about the healing powers of Calston Cove. I hope there are more stories to follow

JJ Harper writes really beautiful and emotional stories full of pain, longing, fresh starts and love.

Trent’s parents are hateful, petty, and cruel people. When Trent has finally had enough, he heads to Calston Cove to reconnect with his brother-in-law and niece, and figure out what he truly wants from life. Leaving behind his parents and his toxic ex, he finds a warm welcome and a flirty, gorgeous landscaper.

They make a really sweet pair. Merlin is a lovely human being, and he’s falling hard for the man who may not be staying.

I enjoyed their journey, Trent learning to shake the people who treated him badly, and building a life of love and passion.

I love this series, and I especially loved seeing Merrick and his little family again.

‘Note to Self’ is the 4th and final 😢 book in the Calston Cove Series. It was a great end to a beautiful series. Trent and Merlin appeared in book 1 and I loved seeing them find each other. I’ve loved every book in this series and this was no different, possibly a standalone in a connected series but I recommend you read them all.

Trent is Merlin’s brother in law and he moves to town to escape homophobic parents and find himself. From the moment he runs into Merlin their destiny is set. Intra-lust gradually becomes more as they build trust and Fond their HEA together.

There’s lots of appearance of characters from earlier books which I absolutely loved. A true small town where you can’t escape each other ❤️

Thank you for the book, here is my honest opinion:
Loved the couple! This is such a wonderful series, I especially loved book one and this newest book is a close runner up. I loved getting to revisit Drew and Merrick again, and loved that Trent (Merrick’s brother in law) took a chance to reestablish a relationship with his niece. Merlin is pretty wonderful and very patient, because Trent is a bit of a mess from a terrible ex and even worse parents. The author is excellent with imbuing her characters and stories with authentic and big emotions and the setting is truly exceptional. It did drag a little with Trent ongoing insecurities and indecision but a satisfying and lovely HEA for Merlin and Trent.

Trent and Merlin stole my heart. Their chemistry hits instantly, but the emotional journey is what makes this story shine. Trent has been so beaten down by his toxic parents and a messy past relationship — I just wanted to wrap him in the biggest hug. 🥺

Merlin is exactly the safe, steady presence Trent needs. He’s patient, supportive, and gently pushes him to believe he deserves love and happiness. The way they help each other heal? Beautiful.

This has:
✨ Best kind of insta-connection
💔 Heartbreak + healing
🌊 Small-town cosy vibes
🔥 Soft but spicy moments
🫶 Found family feels

It’s a lovely finale to the Calston Cove series — emotional, hopeful, and full of love. I’m really going to miss this town.

This is a brilliant end to the fantastic Calston Cove series. Trent has come to the Cove to reconnect with his brother-in-law, Merrick, and literally bumps into local landscaper, Merlin. Both of them feel an instant attraction to the other, but their journey to happiness is not without its problems. Their story is sweet, emotional, and has appearances from previous couples in the series, as well as Trent’s horrible parents, and I was so happy for Trent that he found a new, wonderful family with Merlin.
I’ve loved every book in this series and this one was no exception because Trent and Merlin are absolutely perfect for each other. I can’t recommend this story highly enough.

This was a sweet story about two men who have instant chemistry but must go through a bit of hurdles to get their HEA.
Trent is especially skittish, but that’s to be expected given his awful parents and his appalling ex-boyfriend. This results in him running a bit hot and cold on Merlin, because while his body and his heart are all in on he relationship, his fear of rejection and sense of preservation make him take constant steps back.
Luckily Merlin is a very patient and loving man, and though he sometimes he instinctively gets hurt or frustrated by Trent’s backtracking, he is also understanding enough to stay on hois side and help him along the way.

What a fabulous ending to the Calston Cove series. I absolutely loved it! The chemistry between Trent and Merlin was a joy to behold. I also loved catching up with our other Calston Cove heroes although, having said that, you can read this as a standalone if you really want but so much more enjoyable if you have read the previous three books. I so enjoy a well-written book by a British author when I don’t have to think about social references and locations are familiar to me. Really looking forward to the next offering from this ‘one click’ author. Thoroughly recommend this story to all.

What a great book. I loved the plot, the character and the setting. Both Merlin and Trent have off the charts chemistry and passion but it overwhelms them as neither is sure what it means or where to take it. I loved watching Trent learn to trust and Merlin finds his relationship. I loved this book and will admit I have not read the previous books but I will go back and do so. I think then I will love it even more. I look forward to reading all four in order to get the full impact. This one left me smiling and happy. I did receive an ARC and leave this honest review.

JJ can write characters so well that you can envision them standing in front of you.
She builds families and communities that you want to live in.

In 'Note to Self' she has filled it with people you'll want to sit down and visit with, as well as some you'll never want to see again.
An artist who learns to 'go for the life he'd only dreamed of living,' a landscaper who's building his own dream and a small town filled with wonderful friends and neighbors.

Come for a visit or stay.
You're choice.

Thanks to GRR and JJ for this ARC
