Zara never thought she’d return to her hometown. For years she’s strived to make a place for herself in the art world, finally working her way up at Gallery Six to the owner's assistant. Her next big goal is to use her newly formed connections to have a solo show. But when her boss suggests they have their artist retreat in a small town, Zara’s people-pleasing tendencies take over and she offers up Fortune Falls. While traveling on the train to scout the location, Zara meets Oli. They bond over art, sharing intimate confidences and a passionate kiss. Before Oli gets off at his stop, they exchange numbers. At the start of the retreat a few weeks later, Zara’s boss insists all members of their staff remain professional (no dating the artists). She then tasks Zara with picking up the mystery artist set to lead all the lessons at the retreat. She’s shocked to find it’s Oli and that he’s a graffiti artist almost at Banksy level of fame and secrecy. After everyone signs the NDAs, the retreat is in full swing, and Zara's feelings for Oli deepen. She must decide between risking her years of hard work and connections or following her heart with Oli.

Thank you so much to N.C. Barton and Happily Booked for a chance to read and review this ARC.
I went into this book completely blind, having never heard of this author or series before and wow I loved this book! Zara and Oli have an instant connection when they meet on a train journey. They leave having swapped numbers but knowing they probably won’t see each other again. Cut to Zara has planned artist retreat for her Art Gallery boss, in Zara’s old small town and Oli is the secret guest artist. The sparks fly again but Zara’s boss has forbidden any romance between artists and employees.
I loved the connection these two had straight away the interesting conversations and the amazing spice! Yes there was some miscommunication (which I normally hate) but I felt like it was resolved so well it made it all worth it! Loved this book ❤️
Tropes ❤️🔥 Insta connection 💕 Small town 🎨 Artists ❤️ Found Family
Hello, people! Beginning I have to say that this book is the second book of the series Fortune Falls. But for me, it's the first time I read any book of her. The protagonists are Zara and Oli who have an amazing chemistry and passion.
The writing of author is sweet, tender, enjoyable and romantic. I strongly believe that this book is a cute cozy romance with a great development of the characters.
Thank you to the author and Happily Booked PR for the eARC! This is my honest review!
Okay, picture this — chaotic train ride + one accidental encounter = sparks everywhere.
Zara and Oli’s chemistry? Off. The. Charts. Their banter? Witty, awkward, and adorable in the best small-town romance way.
• Relatable, emotionally real characters • Small-town charm that feels like a warm hug • A story that’ll make you smile, swoon, and maybe blush just a little
Final Thoughts: The Art of the Meet Cute is the perfect cozy romance when you need something sweet, light, and totally heart-melting. Think “comfort read with butterflies.”
Zara and Oli are so sweet. Zara is the owner’s assistant at a major gallery in L.A. which is perfect since she is an artist. She wants to show in galleries like the one she works at for Marlene. Marlene hosts an artist’s retreat every year and Zara is hoping that in running it she will make connections with some major artists and further her work, which has been at a standstill for too long. Marlene decides she is “over Malibu” for hosting the retreat and wants a small town feel, Zara desperate to please and hopefully prove she deserves to show her work tells Marlene of her small hometown in Oregon called Fortune Falls. Marlene insists the retreat should be there and sends Zara on a train ride up the coast to scout a location large enough to host the retreat. In the ride up the coast she meets Oli. They share an instant connection and a kiss that knocks their socks off. They exchange numbers and begin flirtatious texting exchanges immediately. Zara finds the perfect spot for the retreat, only downside is it’s owned by her ex-fiancé Ben. While hosting the five major artists at the retreat Marlene announces who the artist in residence will be teaching and leading the artists (& her and Zara) is none other than a huge Banksy-esque graffiti artist know only as OG. After all the NDAs are signed OG is revealed to be non other than Oliver Grant-aka Oli. Zara and Oli try to stay professional but give in to their amazing chemistry and connection. Not only is it spicy but full of so many sweet and tender moments too. That obviously means it all goes haywire with her ex Ben wanting another chance, a surprise pregnancy, a firing, and the two both making incorrect assumptions of each other causing them to end before they truly began. They do get their hard won HEA after separating and therapy and grand gestures. Great friendships are forged too between two of the lady artists and Zara. It was all so sweet and melancholy and cozy. I loved it!

Yes, my dears, one night can change a person. One book can change a person. Once again, NC Barton has altered my reality with a Fortune Falls novel. Zara and Oli have chemistry, compassion, and passion that transcends the page. This book is a story full of self-acceptance, of finding one’s place and purpose in the world, of discovering the art in the rain, and of understanding what makes belonging. Love in an NC Barton book is more than passionate kisses and eye contact that stills time; it is a state of being that causes growing pains as one evolves because of this other person.
Or, as in the case of readers of NC Barton’s novels, this evolutionary change comes from falling into this world and spending time surrounded by characters full of desire and frustration, full of deep pains and deeper passions, of a place being as much a character as the painter who pushes people away or the graffiti artist who is desperate to connect. Returning to Fortune Falls felt like stepping into a warm bath on a cool night, and returning via train is the most romantic way possible. Zara and Oli have slipped beneath my skin so that I feel as though perhaps I lived The Art of the Meet Cute in a past life or in a dream. That maybe, just maybe, this book is a retelling of a life I have lived but forgot, that I am both Zara and Oli, and I am Ben and Louise, and I am on a train to Fortune Falls and I am also on the beach in the rain.
Zara wonders if Fate exists in our world. If our paths and accomplishments and connections are somehow pre-destined, pre-ordained, or pre-determined. And I don’t know. Like Oli, I like to think there must be some reason in this universe. It’s hard to not believe in fate, especially having discovered NC Barton.
I received a copy of this book from the author and all opinions are my own.
This is a super cute book and has the type of meet cute every girl dreams of where you just happen upon your perfect man. Oli and Zara meet on a train going up the pacific coastline, and they hit it off instantly. Zara is a struggling painter currently dealing with a major creative block and on her way to her hometown for the first time in a decade. Oli is a gorgeous, charming and mysterious guy who mentions he works in art but that it’s a difficult subject due to his father’s disapproval. They have a perfect 24 hours together before they arrive at Oli’s destination where they exchange numbers with plans to ride the train again together.
Zara makes it to her hometown and is immediately confronted with the people she left without looking back - her ex-fiancée and best friend. It turns out that the cabins Zara needs for an artist retreat she’s helping her boss plan are owned by the ex-fiancée and all the drama and discomfort that comes with it.
Flirty texts and more vague plans are made between Oli and Zara, but her job and his position continue to get the way. They decide to take a chance on each other, but complications ensue from both the work front and the ex-fiancée. The meet cute will always be that perfect moment for them, but what makes a relationship is the journey you go on and the work you do to get through all the baggage we all carry. The beauty is in the mess, and I love that Oli and Zara (and other folks in the book) discover this along the way.
Thanks to N.C. Barton and Happily Booked PR for the ARC.
Fall foliage and cabins, paint-splattered canvases, and one very hot graffiti artist? Yes, please! The Art of the Meet Cute is a swoonworthy and sensual romantic escape into the woods of the Pacific Northwest.
NC Barton crafts a deliciously cozy yet undeniably sexy romance set at a secluded autumn art retreat—think flannel meets paint-stained yearning. The setting is a Pinterest board come to life, and it made for the perfect autumn romance read.
The star of this book for me was Oli. Apparently I have a new type—free-spirited, he-falls-first/hard artists who wear their hearts on their sleeves…and their graffiti tags! Oli has a heart of gold and a bit of a mysterious secret-identity edge that I found simply irresistible. I also loved the exploration of the art world and creative process that this book spotlighted. Our FMC Zara is on an artist’s journey as much as a romantic one, and I really connected to her arc and growth as a creative.
NC Barton consistently writes setting-rich, immersive and emotional romances that sink their teeth straight into my heart and won’t let go until the final page. This is the kind of romance that wraps you in a warm blanket, hands you a mug of cider, then turns the heat way, way up. Can’t wait for the final book in her Fortune Falls series!
I couldn’t put down the newest book by NC Barton. It was the perfect read while I curled up on the couch with a warm cup of coffee. It’s set in the fall, just as the weather starts to get colder. Barton brings us back to the Oregon coast and introduces us to a cast of artists.
Zara meets Oli on a train from LA to Oregon. She’s on her way to Fortune Falls, the hometown she hasn’t returned to in ten years, to scope out the perfect location for an artist’s retreat her boss wants to host.
Zara and Oli hit it off right away, and after a series of events, Zara learns that Oli is the mystery artist hired to lead the retreat. Zara must stay professional, but her feelings for Oli only deepen as they spend more time together. While emotions are strong, Zara can’t shake her skepticism of fate and true love. People have hurt and abandoned her before.
Zara’s journey toward self-acceptance and coming to terms with her past adds an extra layer to this story. To fully accept Oli’s love, Zara must learn to trust others again. I was rooting for a happy ending, and I wasn’t disappointed.
🎨ARC Review: The Art of Meet Cute by N.C. Barton 💕
Zara’s return to her sleepy hometown in Fortune Falls is the last thing she expected until art, fate, and a seriously swoony graffiti artist collide. 🖌️✨
Working her way up in the art world, Zara finally has a shot at her big break 🎨💼 but her people-pleasing ways land her organizing a company retreat… right in her hometown. On the train there, she meets Oli mysterious, passionate, and utterly charming. Their connection? Instant. Their kiss? 🔥 Unforgettable. But fate has a wicked sense of humor Oli turns out to be the secret artist leading her retreat, and her boss has one rule: ❌ No dating the artists.
As the retreat unfolds, their chemistry becomes impossible to ignore 💞🔥. Between whispered confessions, late-night art sessions, and forbidden glances across the canvas, Zara must choose: protect her career 🎭 or risk it all for love ❤️.
The Art of the Meet Cute by NC Barton is the second book in the Fortune Falls Series and tells Zara and Oli’s story.
Zara works in a gallery but has goals of her own to have her own show. While looking to find the location for the artist retreat, she meets Oli, a fellow artist. They part ways after their first meeting, but are unexpectedly reunited when Zara finds out that Oli is leading lessons at the retreat in Oregon.
Zara and Oli had great chemistry and banter throughout the story, and the novel shows the choice Zara faces: career or love. Oli encourages her not only to pursue her goals in art, but also encourages her to follow her heart. I was rooting for them throughout the story.
This is the first book by NC Barton that I’ve read and look forward to reading more!
Readers who enjoy found family, forced proximity, small town, and he falls first will enjoy this book. There are open door scenes.
Thank you to N.C. Barton and Happily Booked PR for the opportunity to read and review this book!
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a honest review.
An artist retreat in a small town sounds like an idyllic backdrop for romance. A chance meeting on a train is such an adorable meet-cute. Being told you can’t fraternise with the artist in residence at the retreat sounds reasonable, until it turns out to be the same handsome stranger you connected with on the train.
This is the dilemma facing Zara as she arranges the artist retreat in her old home town of Fortune Falls, the first time she has been back since she ran out on her old fiancé Ben. Heading down on the train to scout out the area, she meets up with enigmatic Oli, and they share a few blissful hours together, talking, getting to know each other and some amazing kisses and chemistry. When the retreat is finally set up, Oli turns out to be their artist in residence and is totally off limits.
The chemistry between Oli and Zara was spectacular; they really connected in a way she had never done with Ben. The tension between them while they fought the pull between them was almost physical, and when they finally gave in to their passion, it was so sizzling and spicy it could have set the pages on fire.
The supporting characters of Louise and Alice were wonderful, so supportive of Zara when she needed them most, and they became such a great friend group. Ben was a pain in the ass, as was Zara’s boss, Marlene. I’m glad they got the ending they deserved.
✨Thank you to N.C. Barton and Happily Booked for the chance to read and review this ARC! ✨
I went into The Art of the Meet Cute with no expectations and found it to be a light, trope-filled romance with some lovely touches — especially the side characters, who truly stole the show for me. The book leans into some fan-favorite tropes: insta connection, small-town charm, artist vibes, and a strong found family element. While I didn’t always feel fully connected to the main characters, I really enjoyed the surrounding cast. The side characters felt warm, quirky, and real — they brought a lot of heart and personality to the story and made the setting feel alive.
There were moments of miscommunication and some fast-paced relationship beats that didn’t quite land for me, but the energy between the supporting characters and the sense of community really helped balance things out.
If you’re a fan of cozy small-town romances with creative flair and a lovable supporting cast, this book might be for you! ❤️
The Art of the Meet Cute by N.C. Barton completely stole my heart! I went in expecting a sweet, artsy romance and got so much more...emotion, self-discovery, and that kind of slow-burn connection that makes you grin like an idiot while reading.
Zara and Oli’s chemistry jumped right off the page from the moment they met on the train, and their reunion at the art retreat had me absolutely hooked. The tension, the longing, the “we really shouldn’t but can’t help it” energy? Perfection.
What I loved most was how Barton weaves art and fate together. It’s not just a love story, it’s about learning to trust, to belong, and to see beauty even when life feels messy. The Oregon coast setting was the perfect cozy backdrop, and honestly, Fortune Falls feels like a place I’d pack up and move to tomorrow.
This one is swoony, a little forbidden, and full of heart, an absolute must-read for anyone who believes that love really can be its own kind of art.
I hadn’t read this author before and did a total impulse request for the ARC, judging by the cover, as always! I was so pleasantly surprised. From the very start, I was hooked by the meet-cute—hide and seek, all the questions, and the adorable nicknames (Zara Bytheway and Oliver Really!)—I haven’t read a meet-cute like this in ages, and it was just so charming.
The connection between Oli and Zara is immediate and electric. At first, I honestly thought the story was going to be about Zara reconnecting with her ex Ben, the setup really made me go back to the blurb to check! But thankfully, it wasn’t. The chemistry between Oli and Zara, combined with the forbidden romance angle, hit so hard and kept me turning pages, wanting more.
I really felt for Zara too, her life, career, and love life all seemed to be spiralling, and it was so relatable. The author captured that tension of balancing ambition, personal life, and unexpected love perfectly. This story had heart, heat, and a little bit of heartbreak; I loved every moment. Definitely one of my favorite reads recently!
Thank you to the author and Happily Booked PR for providing an ARC.
ARC Review: Thank you to the author for giving me an advanced look at this book in exchange for a fair review.
I would give this a 4.5 stars if GoodReads allowed that. Please note that this is not my normal genre and I would consider this a Cozy Romance. Even with that said, I loved this story and didn't want to put it down.
Zara is working in an art gallery and an aspiring artist herself trying to work her way up the ladder. Her boss wants their annual artist retreat in a small town and Zara recommends her home town of Fortune Falls. The dynamic between these two is a little reminiscent of The Devil Wears Prada and that is NOT a bad thing in my book. Oli is our MMC. Zara and him meet on a train and there is an instant connection. However, will they be able to survive all of the past trauma and people that get in their way.
I was rooting for these two from the start even on the moments I wanted to throttle Zara and allowing her past trauma to get in her way.
I had the privilege to receive an ARC of The Art of the Meet Cute by a local author!
I’m gonna start by saying I’m rating this book what it DESERVES, not necessarily MY rating, which I don’t normally do but, the thing is, I’m the problem🤣
This is the 1st regular book I’ve read coming down from 4 high romantasy/fantasy books and piggy backing off of that, like I said in my last review, is HARD!
There’s nothing wrong with the concept, idea, or execution of this story! All of my personal dislikes about it are just that - my spoiled princess opinion🥲
I personally don’t really have a deep appreciation for art so following all of that was not my cup of tea. I also don’t love stories that aren’t dual POV because I’m spoiled. I HATE a time jump, which we get here. I got the ick from how often coffee is referenced as “glorious” or “magic” and etc. And overall it was hard for me to get through but I truly believe that these things are just my problems and that I’m not the target audience for it!
Wonderfully engaging . I was quickly hooked . A classical example of the art ( yes I went there) of falling in love with.Zara meets Oli on a train on her way to scout a location for an Art show for her boss. Ever the people pleaser ,she offered up the location so it’s down to her to check the place out. Oli and Zara get on so well that when he alights earlier than she ,he asks for her number to keep in touch.. Next thing you know she’s meeting a new Artist to bring them to their exhibition on her boss’ behest and lo and behold who it is . One big fly in the ointment though is no mixing business with pleasure . Hands off the client . She must be compliant.,.Do they find a way to be together or do they just have the lingering memory of a train journey to jeep them warm at night? Yule see for yourself if you get it for your bookshelf and read as I did with speed. Great writing and easy style that made me smile
Zara shared a passionate kiss with a stranger on a train. Why don’t these things happen to me lol Anyway, she’s if to pick up an artist for the show that she’s helped set up for. Only to find that the artist she’s picking up is the stranger she shared that kissed with! But the artists are hands off, an NDA has been signed, so what does she do? Is she willing to put her job in the love for a guy that’s setting off sparks between them? Oli Ava Zara were meant for one another. That much was apparent as feelings between them grew as time went on. They were truly a match meant to be together. And I loved how this book brought that about with their interactions throughout. This was such a sweet and spicy romance with so much fun and enjoyment through the book. I loved the snag town setting as well. That a fave for me always.
Sweet, swoony, and full of heart from the very first page! This story completely drew me in with its mix of creative passion and emotional depth. Zara returns to her hometown for an artist retreat, and meeting Oli turns everything upside down. Their connection is effortless yet complicated in all the best ways, blending humor, tension, and genuine chemistry.
What stood out most was how real the characters felt—both chasing dreams, both afraid to take a chance. The “mystery artist” twist added the perfect touch of intrigue without taking away from the heartfelt romance. I loved the cozy, art-filled small-town setting and how every scene felt like a moment you’d want to pause and savor.
If you love emotional, slow-burn romances with secret identity vibes, growth, and all the feels—this one deserves a spot on your TBR! 💕🎨📚
This was such a cute, cozy, and wholesome read! 🩷 Zara is an artist struggling to find her voice and feel like her art is “enough,” all while working at a gallery. Then she meets Oliver Grant — another artist — and their chemistry jumps right off the page.
Even with that instant spark, they take their time, getting to know each other in Fortune Falls. I loved that there was some miscommunication (because, let’s be honest, what relationship doesn’t have it?), but what stood out was how they actually talked it through. It felt real, mature, and so relatable.
The small-town charm, the artistic backdrop, and the slow build of their connection made this such a feel-good romance. The chemistry? Spot on. 🎨✨
I’ll definitely be checking out the rest of this series!
A cozy, art-filled romance with heart, heat, and autumn charm!
The Art of the Meet Cute by NC Barton is a swoonworthy escape into the Pacific Northwest, blending fall foliage, flannel, and creative passion. Set at a secluded art retreat, this story wraps you in warmth and then turns up the heat with a sizzling connection between Zara, a struggling artist, and Oli, a mysterious graffiti artist with a heart of gold.
Their meet-cute is unforgettable, quirky, electric, and full of charm, and their chemistry only deepens as they navigate professional boundaries, personal growth, and emotional vulnerability. Zara’s journey of self-acceptance and healing adds depth to the romance, making her arc as compelling as her love story.
Barton’s writing shines with immersive settings, relatable characters, and a perfect balance of humor, tension, and tenderness. If you love slow-burn romances with secret identity twists, artistic soul-searching, and all the cozy fall vibes, this one deserves a spot on your shelf.
This was my first time reading anything by N. C. Barton, and I picked up the book just because the cover caught my eye.
The story follows Zara, an artist trying to prove herself while working for a demanding gallery owner. She travels to a small town she hasn’t visited in years to find the perfect spot for an art retreat. On the train, she meets Oli, and their first interaction was so fun and memorable.
As the story goes on, Zara finds out that Oli is the artist leading the retreat. She’s supposed to keep things professional, but that becomes harder as they spend more time together.
Oli was a great match for her kind, creative, and supportive.
The setting added a nice touch, with the small town and art retreat. There were a few surprises along the way, and I stayed interested the whole time.
Zara has been climbing her way up in the art world for years after fleeing her hometown and an engagement she didn’t really see going anywhere. But when she’s forced to return to Fortune Falls to arrange an art retreat, she meets Oli on the train. Oli is an artist in disguise who treats Zara like a queen and the two fall hard for each other. But can they truly make this work amidst their own lives?
I loved NC Barton’s first part of this series and couldn’t wait to pick this one up. There’s a lot of the similar notes of realism in this for how the two adults face life and have lots of struggles through their worth, what they want, and more. I love that Zara is headstrong but still struggles to go for what she wants until Oli, and Oli is reckless until he realized how much she means to him. A great romance.
Zara and Oliver… Dad jokes everywhere - they were so awkwardly cute! Bit of a possible love triangle vibe, but there’s secrets about why she left!!
Plenty of heartbreak - I felt sorry for her. An ex who works to sabotage her new relationship. Her new guy hides secrets, and chucks a snit at her. He overreacted to a situation and kicks her out. Her mum is the worst - like, hey let’s just erase the fact I have a daughter and kick her out in favour of the new family.
By that stage, with everyone telling her that she had messed everything up, I was fed up and wanted her to leave the lot of them behind. She did need the character growth, but she certainly wasn’t the only one.
I enjoyed this. Aspects of it made it a rage read, so do go in with an open mind.
As the title hints, this is a cute artsy romance book with a HEA ending after a few road bumps. The story of Zara and Oli who meet on a train and have an instant connection🥰 Zara is hardworking, insecure, a little bit of a push over because she needs to prove herself in the art world. Oli is the free spirited open minded artist with lots of charisma. Their chemistry is so swoony, their 🌶️ is cute in a romantic way with delicious build-up! Lots of art world building which I found fascinating, especially since the author mentions in the book she was an art student herself. So it was nice to see her building a book around her experiences.
Tomorrow is the day get ready this amazing book is out tomorrow Oktober 10!
When I got this book I figured it was gonna be a sweet small town romance. Nothing wrong with that. I really like a small town romance but it's nice with something fresh and new. This book was a lot more than just a small town romance. I liked that it revolved around the art world and that the whole focus wasn't on the romance and them ending together there was so much more, focus on the art and the fmc finding herself. I loved that, there was actually a point I was doubting what was going to happen but I liked it. I haven't read anything like it before. A really cute book with some really great characters.
This book is amazing. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. I absolutly fell in love with the MMC and MFC.
Zara who goes by Ashford in the book because that's what her boss calls her is amazing. Oli is just as amazing. Love his little secret that he keeps in the beginning.
Zara works for an art gallery and her boss wants her to find a place for the Art retreat. So he decided to go back to where she used to live and see if the cabins are still there and available for use. She learns her ex now owns them and that a lot of things haven't really changed much since she was last there 10 years ago.
Oli reveals his secret at the Art retreat. It starts a lot of interesting changes for people.
This book was pure cozy-fall magic, and I was not prepared. Zara is the kind of FMC you just want to hug and also follow around with a pumpkin spice latte because she’s that relatable. And Oli? Let’s just say if a hot, artsy, paint-splattered man accidentally bumped into me on public transportation, I would simply pass away on the spot. Their meet cute had me giggling like I was the third wheel.
The whole story feels like stepping into a warm cabin with good vibes, good art, and even better chemistry. It’s light, swoony, a little blush-worthy in the best way, and just a feel-good read all around. If you love fall romances with charm, heart, and a dash of chaos, this one is basically your next cozy-day essential.
