Ultimate Spider-Man #23 is a solid penultimate chapter that builds momentum heading into the finale. While a few story threads still feel underdeveloped for this late in the run, the issue delivers strong pacing, clear stakes, and effective character moments that keep everything moving forward. It’s not perfect, but it’s confident, engaging, and does exactly what it needs to do at this stage of the story. And love the art!
Liked this issue a lot. Spider-Man is cool as hell and he gets to show off that cool shit he’s known for doing. The tension is very high and I’m really curious how this series will end because man…. You could easily keep this series going for a long time but what can you do. It sucks that the next issue isn’t until two months from now but it’ll be the big finale… :(
Spider Man has taken the ultimate beat down, but came back fighting. Harry is locked between two very bad choices. Richard is in a pinch with his girlfriend. Drama at its best. Loved Otto’s pajamas.
A very strong issue that leads up to the finale. So much feels in the balance and that makes the next issue feel like it is going to be something special.
Eh. The series peaked with #16 in my opinion. Too much talking. Too much shifting focus on other characters (why did we need such a long backstory on Mr. Negative in that previous issue?). Not enough Peter and MJ together. Not enough Peter in suit getting more experience. Why does Otto have to have a Spider suit? Just for the sale of referencing Superior Spider-Man? OK. I could go on.
Two years to take down this version of Wilson Fisk? Two years? Why would Harry set the AI persona to that of his abusive father? Why would Hickman spend an entire issue of Peter, Mary, Harry and Gwen sitting and talking about revelations MJ was in the dark about?
There’s not necessarily anything wrong with this issue, but it’s hard to imagine it’s the penultimate one. It seems a number of things are going to wrap-up underdeveloped and we’re saying goodbye to these iterations of the characters rather quickly.
It’s unfortunate, but otherwise this issue is almost all action, tapping into the revolutionary core that makes up the foundation of this new Ultimate Universe. Entertaining and fun to read but done too soon!
if marvel really is ending this after 24 issues….well that’s just a god damn shame. i just hope the ending is bombastic. cmon hickman, gimme the good stuff.
