From Me to Fostering a Culture Where Everyone Wins
When people feel safe, seen, and successful, trust takes root, ownership grows, and generosity flows.
When Josh Block left the office on Friday, he was a regional sales representative. By Monday morning, he was president of the company. His unexpected promotion threw him into the deep end of leadership—facing the same challenges many leaders encounter reengaging a disheartened team, restoring trust, and creating a culture where people love to work.
In People Matter at Work, Block shares his story of navigating crisis leadership by shifting the focus from individual survival to collective success. He exposes the toxic grip of the Me-Cycle—a self-preserving mindset in which bosses and employees operate in silos and primarily look out for themselves. It’s a surefire recipe for disengagement and dysfunction.
The antidote? The We-Cycle—a transformational approach powered by leaders who work together, make thoughtful decisions, and lead with transparency. These leaders create cultures where people feel safe, seen, and successful. When leaders embody this mindset and put people first, team members respond in kind—carrying trust, ownership, and generosity. This deepens commitment and fuels a culture where performance shines and everyone wins.
With empathy and hard-won insight, Block offers real-world, practical tools for leaders at any level to turn workplaces into communities of shared purpose, growth and belonging. Because leadership isn’t just about confidence and competence—it’s about cultivating a culture where people thrive.
Whether you’re an aspiring leader or leading from the top, People Matter at Work shows how the most successful companies build from the inside out—by choosing we over me.
Josh Block’s People Matter @ Work is the kind of leadership book that doesn’t try to dazzle you with jargon or “10 easy steps.” Instead, it does something rarer: it tells the truth about what leadership really is—high-stakes, yes, but the players are not pawns. They’re people.
Josh doesn’t hand executives a magic wand. He offers a hard-won framework that’s both strategic and straightforward—because this is business, not Oz. What surprised me most was how often the word "joy" surfaced. Not the performative, forced kind. The real kind—built through daily choices that help people feel seen, safe, and significant. And when you consider that most adults will spend roughly 80,000 hours at work, that focus becomes more than a “nice culture perk.” It becomes a life-level responsibility.
What makes the book especially compelling is Josh’s humility. He doesn’t posture as perfect. He shares missteps alongside successes, which gives his principles (including his “Three T’s” and other tools) weight and credibility. Even better, he allows his team to help tell the story—so “People Matter” isn’t just a slogan. It’s a lived experience described by people within the culture.
Josh also sheds fresh light on topics leaders often mishandle: entitlement, generosity, and strategic transparency. He reframes collaboration in a way that feels grounded in real-world leadership rather than theory. And one of the most resonant ideas for me is that leaders perpetuate what they celebrate. Many organizations operate in the “basement,” reinforcing urgency, heroics, and output at the expense of trust and sustainability. This book is an invitation to build something sturdier, where people don’t have to protect themselves from the culture.
This isn’t an easy-fix read. It’s a long-game strategy for leaders and organizations that want to create workplaces where talented people want to join, stay, grow, and contribute—together. If you lead people (or plan to), this book is worth your time and your attention.
Josh Block paints an inspiring picture of workplace people want to be in. I appreciate the work that went into making a coherent argument for making better leaders. Unfortunately, this literature appeals to a minority of people that will lead groups or teams of people. I cannot take many things away to apply at this stage of my life, but if I ever find myself in a position like Josh, I will certainly use his leadership advice.
Privileged to have experienced Josh's beliefs in action over the past 17 years. Truth is that Josh and Team invest in equipment and services, however the lasting success and joy is that Block Imaging invests in people! Excellent work and study! mike
There are good and easy tools in this book to help leaders early in their career and established leaders become more polished. I have recommended this book out to a few people and it has helped each one differently.
