He’s the City of the Dead’s most notorious enforcer. She’s a burned-out assassin. Both monsters in their own right, can they find love locked in a haunted house?
Rhiannon Brontë came back to Orphium to steal her sword back. She had no intention of being roped back into the lives of her immortal sisterhood. But now that she’s home, she can no longer ignore the calls of duty coming at her from all sides. All she wants is an escape.
Eryx Necroline lost his first love to the dangers of his profession and swore he’d never love again. When the woman of his dreams is determined to lock herself in the city’s most haunted house, he faces the dilemma of his go with her and risk falling in love again, or let her slip away forever.
The Swan is the second book in The World of the Orphium Maere, a sizzling paranormal romantasy series of interconnected standalones, perfect for fans of Neon Gods and A Touch of Darkness.
“Do you understand that if you love me back that I will never leave you, never betray you?”
(Instantly melts)
“I will never cage you, never stop you from doing exactly what you need to, and I will always be waiting when you come back home.”
(I am a puddle)
Assassins, Necromancers, Haunted Houses... Oh my!
No one can right epically devastating paranormal romances like Allsion. I love an independent and strong FMC, and that is exactly how Allsion writes her characters.
Although this is a connected standalone, I highly recommend reading the Consulate as well. You will thank me later.
Allison. Carr. Waechter. What did you do to my brain? The Swan is the perfect follow-up to The Consulate. Rhiannon and Eryx's story is this emotional journey that will gut you and put you back together again as they constantly open up to each other.
Allison does this amazing job of of infusing some much tension and emotion into her stories -- and I live for it. This plot had been speed reading to the end. Burn out and done with the world, Rhiannon and Eryx venture into Oleander House -- known as the most haunted house. This house as a tragic and deadly story to tell and Rhiannon and Eryx are forced to relive moments of the house's devastating pass as they are locked within its boundaries. As the events play, the two also come to gris with their own personal stories, their own pain and fears.
Their relationship is an emotional one that will have you screaming at them to open up to each other and just embrace what happens next. And let me tell you...whew, when they do...the spice does not disappoint in the slightest.
The return to the the World of the Orphium Maere was a welcome one and I loved the tense and emotionally fraught story that Allison delivers.
When you realize why it’s titled “The Swan” 😭. What a beautiful story of loss, healing, love, and the underrated strength needed to keep going. The deep aching need to belong somewhere, to belong to someone. The way Rhiannon will sacrifice everything to protect her family. And the way Eryx sees how much she’s sacrificing of herself and helps her realize she needs to take care of herself as much as she does others. The haunting, gothic atmosphere is addicting. The creepy moments in the haunted cottage, the ghosts, the past colliding with the future, just immaculate. And of course the found family that is always a theme in ACW’s books and tugs on the heartstrings. If you loved her previous books you’ll love this too. And if you haven’t read any, this is your reminder.
At this rate, I'm going to run out of words to describe how much I love Allison's writing. With every book, she creates deeper, more complex worlds full of characters that speak to parts of me that I didn't even realize were waiting to be recognized. Rhiannon and Eryx - two weary assassins that continually show up for everyone but themselves - are the latest entries into the category of "characters that I see parts of myself in." No, I'm not an assassin, a warrior, or a necromancer. But I am a person (as I am sure many of us are) that has definitely felt burnout and an immense desire to just have a moment to recharge and not have to deal with everything that is asked of me by the rest of the world.
OK, to stop turning this into an impromptu therapy session on the internet disguised as a book review... In The Swan, we pick up in the aftermath of the events of The Consulate. The Maere have their swords, and are in the process of rebuilding and figuring out next steps after unexpected revelations. To top it all off, Rhiannon and Eryx (the necromancer assassin) keep being called to Oleander Cottage, a house haunted with spirits that aren't exactly happy.
As Rhiannon and Eryx start unraveling the magic and mystery of Oleander Cottage, they run into deeper evils that the previous Necroline leaders let fester. And also connections to the Maere and the island that they come from (Rhiannon's past, specifically). They also both harbor the deep belief that neither of them are worthy of the love of the other, despite both wanting it deeply. As our assassins learn more, they also realize that there are even deeper machinations at play that have been going on for years in the background as their people have just tried to survive and not be completely taken out by humans seeking even more power. There is always more to do in Orphium.
The bone-deep ache and tiredness that Rhiannon feels is palpable. She is tired. She has had to shoulder and overcome so much in her immortal life, and for a long time it feels as if there is no end. She has her Maere sisters, but she also needs someone else that is willing to let her be selfish and not expect anything in return. In Eryx, we have that man. The Swan gives us more of the mythology and history of the world, opens up even more threads for future stories, and shows us the toll (and toil) of those burdened to carry out the tasks that most people would not step up to do. We see the grief and the exhaustion and the pain of lives long-lived etched in every word and thought. But we also get to see the sometimes fragile hope that things can get better. That changes can come around, if you have the love and support and willingness to fight for it.
I read this early as an ARC from the author. All opinions are my own.
The woman could make anyone feel like the center of the world — but she was the true center. ~ I’m sorry, but this book absolutely consumed me in the best way possible and I am so damn proud of Allison and her stories. This was PHENOMENAL! Eryx and Rhiannon had a story I have been excited about since I knew they existed, and knew they both battled these demons within themselves in solitude but just wanted someone to prove them wrong, and they were able to be that someone for each other and it was beautiful. And Oleander? The MYSTERY and intrigue and haunting magic in that little cottage took this story to the next level for me. It was breathtaking and suspenseful as Rhi and Eryx weave their way through the illusions, trying to solve a mystery that is centuries old and somehow ties to their present, ending in tears and forgiveness and love and something that I did not see coming, and I cannot wait for the next book. This dystopian magical world that Allison has created is something special, and so are these characters. This is a book you need on your TBR sooner rather than later!
Haunted house + assassin + immortal angst = perfection!
Rhiannon and Eryx are the monster romance power couple I didn’t know I needed. The Swan is gothic, gritty, and full of yearning…like if a dagger had feelings. Allison Carr Waechter does it again.
This one gets 5 stars because it made me emotional. Let’s start with our FMC. Rhiannon is an assassin who is burnt out from trying to please everyone but herself. She is beyond the point of exhaustion and decides to spend time at Oleander Cottage just to disconnect from the world and its expectations. Oleander Cottage is extremely haunted and keeps drawing her back to it night after night. Eryx, our MMC and necromancer, volunteers to go to Oleander Cottage with Rhiannon. In trying to solve the mysteries of Oleander Cottage together, Eryx and Rhiannon get closer and confide in each other about things theyuu’ve never been able to tell anyone else. I loved the parts of the story with Rhiannon and Eryx together at the cottage, healing their emotional trauma together. I loved the plot, the bigger story that you find out about halfway through, and the romance. Eryx and Rhiannon’s story was beautiful and made me shed a tear or two. Also, when you find out why it’s called “The Swan”……so good. That’s all I’ll say to not spoil anything. This was dual POV which I always am a fan of. This was different from anything I normally read but I loved it and highly recommended

“𝘒𝘪𝘴𝘴 𝘮𝘦,” 𝘐 𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥. “𝘓𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭. 𝘙𝘢𝘷𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘮𝘦.”
We journey back into Orphium after the great heist. I recommend reading The Consulate first for best continuity and emotional impact!
In this installment, we learn more of the history, secrets, and familial ties to the past. Together, Rhiannon and Eryx work to uncover the haunting mysteries at Oleander Cottage.
Tropes: 👀Dual POV 🫂Forced proximity 💕Paranormal romantasy 🙋🏻He falls first 🏡Haunted house 🪭”Let me take care of you” 💫Interconnected standalone 🌶️: open door
Rhiannon is a formidable immortal warrior but beneath her perfectly composed exterior, she is hanging on by a tread. Harboring lifetimes of self doubt and struggles of self worth, she throws herself into caring for everyone else. Eryx, a clairsentient enforcer for his brother, has never let go of the failures to protect those he loved.
The chemistry between them is magnetic. I loved the deep exploration of their pasts and the trust they slowly build with each other. Their fiery passion burns up the pages!
While both are haunted by painful pasts, they strengthen their resolve to fight for each other and their chosen family. The truths they learn will break them or forge them into something stronger together.
The Swan seamlessly marries the eerie, modern, and atmospheric vibes in this transportive and spellbinding sequel! The next standalone cannot come soon enough!
Thank you Allison Carr Waechter for the review copy opportunity! This is my honest and voluntary review
📖abt the book: *Forced proximity *He falls first (debatable) *Haunted cottage *"Let me take care of you" *Mutual healing *Found family
🏍️my thoughts: I was a bit iffy because I didn't set aside enough time to be able to read The Consulate, aka the first book in the series. While I don't regret reading The Swan, I do wish I had taken that extra time because though it was an "interconnected standalone," you miss out on the world-building and character development/glances that could have strengthened this book.
That being said - I still like The Swan. While one of the tropes said that Eryx falls first, I think he and Rhiannon both mutually fell at the same time while also going through their own healing process in an unconventional place - a haunted cottage with a malefic spirit that has been unaliving people for years.
There were a few parts that felt a bit repetitious (especially while they were in the Oleander Cottage) and at times it felt like a bit much, but I assume the latter is because again I did not read the first book.
I would totally recommend this book (as long as you read The Consulate first) for those who are interested in relationship-meddling cottages/pocket universes, mutual attraction between friends/housemates/colleagues(?), and all of the other tropes mentioned!
Rhiannon Brontë returns to Orphium with one goal: steal back her sword. The last thing she needs is to be dragged into the chaos of her immortal sisterhood or the complications of her feelings for the City of the Dead’s most feared enforcer, Eryx Necroline. But when the two of them end up together in the city’s most haunted house, she’s forced into an uneasy partnership with him. As they uncover the home’s sinister secrets, they find themselves entangled in a web of magic, grief, and ghosts that refuse to stay buried.
This book was unexpectedly cathartic. The writing is dark and moody, perfectly suited to its haunted, grief-laden tone. Rhiannon is a compelling heroine: sharp-edged, weary, and quietly vulnerable. Eryx, her equal in both tragedy and strength, balances her with a surprising tenderness. The chemistry between them simmers beneath layers of grief and guilt, making their connection inevitable but satisfying. I especially enjoyed the found family elements and the ways each character grew beyond their pain. It’s gothic, emotional, and beautifully melancholy, lingering long after finishing.
The book definitely has two distinct halves, but they work together to create a full, emotionally resonant arc. The pacing slows in the middle, but the character development and family drama mostly keeps it from dragging. While this can technically be read as a standalone, there are many interlocking pieces - characters, organizations, and lore - that might be clearer if you start with book one. Still, even on its own, it’s an immersive, rewarding read. Many thanks to Allison Carr Waechter and Sarah from Behind the Pages LLC for this ARC. This is my honest review.
Where do I even begin? This book was spooky, haunting, emotional, tense. I was pulled right into the book in the first chapter, Rhiannon is one of my favourite of the Maere and one who I identify with the most. This is book 2 in the Orphium Maere series.
What’s haunting Oleander Cottage? This is something that Rhiannon and Eryx must solve together.
Author Allison Carr Waechter continues to build on her excellent world building and lore history in The Swan. The spice was hot, that lounge scene will live rent free in my head forever. This book felt way more spooky and more intense. I was genuinely freaked out, by how in detail the author described the interactions with spirits. I felt like I was watching a horror movie. Of course I kept reading, who doesn’t like to have their heart beating out of their chest?! I really enjoyed all the details with the gods/goddess and the history of all beings in this book.
Allison Carr Waechter knocked this out of the park! Definitely my favourite of the series so far!
Rhiannon is such a strong relatable character I loved it so much. Eryx is just a dark soft soul. I loved watching these two break their shells of tension to be vulnerable with each other while exploring the secrets of the haunted cabin.
✨ forced proximity ✨ just one bed ✨ haunted house ✨ paranormal mafia ✨ he falls first ✨ “let me take care of you” ✨ horrorromance lite
I do think it would've helped me a bit to read the first in the series even though you can read it separately, but it didn't take away from the romantasy mystery-filled storyline filled with healing & learning to love. I loved every second of it & I'm so thankful for the opportunity to get the ARC because Allison has such an incredible way of writing. I can't wait to dive into more from this author!
This is a fantastic follow-up to The Consulate! I have been looking forward to Rhiannon and Eryx's story since we got hints of their chemistry and tension in the first book. Their story is emotional and one that I feel will resonate with so many people. They are both reeling from burn out after a long life of murder and action. When they enter the extremely dangerous and haunted Oleander House to figure out the mystery of the house and its' occupants, Eryx and Rhiannon begin to come to terms with their own past and fears. We see this amazing development for them individually as well as them as a couple. They support each other and offer a comfort that neither has really had before. I loved seeing their walls come down for each other where we could really learn more about them. Their romance was intense and passionate yet soft at the same time.
I loved the mystery throughout the book, but I also loved the action in the last part of this book. We get to see more of the necromancers and maere in action plus we slowly learn more about Otrera. This world and the characters are developing more in each book and I can't wait to see what comes next in this series!
4.5⭐️ if there’s one thing, Allison does incredibly well, it’s writing emotionally vulnerable characters, who may be a little bruised, not quite broken, who find healing with each other. This book is a master class in finding your peace. Rhiannon and Eryx have long histories and deep emotional scars. But they work so well together, and their romance is just so, so good. I did find the first part of the book a little slow, and it’s also a tad confusing because the haunted house plays with the characters minds a bit. But the story slowly unfolds, and then we get into some deeper political dynamics that really enhance the plot. I thought there was a good balance of plot with the romance, and the action moves pretty quickly in the latter half of the book. It’s a beautiful story and I’m glad to be continuing in this world of the Maere.
Thank you so much to Allison Carr Waechter for the advanced copy of The Swan! All opinions are my own.
"Sometimes broken things can't be fixed." I admitted quietly, looking back down at the stress ball. "Sometimes they stay broken."
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶🌶🌶
What you'll find in this book: • Paranormal Romantasy • He Falls First • Forced Proximity • Super Haunted House • "Let Me Take Care Of You." • Interconnected Standalone • Ghost Cat • "We Don't Deserve Love" • An Assassin Recovering From Burnout
When I say that this book does the most amazing job of blending together a spooky paranormal fantasy and the searing slow burn romance of two people that feel they don't deserve a second chance, I really mean it. I love that this story focuses as much around Oleander Cottage as it does Rhiannon and Eryx. Allison weaves together the mystery surrounding the sinister haunting of the cottage with Rhiannon and Eryx's past and how this bleeds into their present and how their lives become inexplicably intertwined. There a very few books out that that I have read that have got the balance between the spooky and the romance right quite like this one, the story gives you the chills before heating up when the romance kicks in.
What do you get when you lock the City of the Dead's most notorious enforcer and a burnt-out assassin who are trying so hard to fight their feelings for one another in a haunted house? You get the most amazing story of two people, both as monstrous as the other, working together to solve the reason for Oleander Cottage's haunting while a searing romance begins to burn brighter and brighter. Rhiannon Brontë only came back to Orphium for one reason, to steal back her sword, getting involved in the lives of her immortal sisterhood was never the plan. However, no she's home she can no longer ignore the calls of duty, burnt-out and tired, she just wants an escape. Eryx Necroline is haunted by his past, losing his first love to the dangers his profession brings means he swore he'd never find love again. But when the woman of his dreams decides that she is going to lock herself in the cities most haunted house he must make a choice: go with her and risk his heart or let her slip through his fingers. The question quickly becomes how did the haunting of Oleander Cottage come about and what is its purpose? Will our two characters make it out the other side to find the love they so very much deserve?
We get a massive deep dive into both Rhiannon and Eryx throughout this story, how their past has shaped them into the characters they have become. Living in the city of the dead is fantastical enough, but to know that the sisterhood Rhiannon belongs to come from a mystical hidden island where its inhabitants are trained to be formidable and if worthy become immortal. When we meet Rhiannon at the start of this story, she us burnt out and confused by Eryx's sudden cold shoulder and that makes her more susceptible to the ghostly going ons at Oleander Cottage. She knows that someone or something is try to tell her something, and she is determined to find out what feeling inexplicably drawn to the cottage. Her quiet determination while also wanting some piece and quiet from the outside world and her responsibilities. You can feel how worn down she is and how she is pulling herself through her immortal life. I love that Eryx sees Rhiannon like no one else does, how he wants to be there for her in a way that no one else can. Eryx keeps his circle small, so scared of anyone around him getting hurt as the consequence of his work as a necromancer just like that of his first love. Reading as these two fall for eachother despite their hesitance and fear of getting hurt was such a pleasure. The spice of their heated and passionate romance that balances with heartfelt sweet tender moments was absolute perfection in contrast to the spookiness of the hauntings and sinister machinations of certain individuals.
The mystery surrounding Oleander Cottage had me obsessed, I was so intrigued with Rhiannon and Eryx's investigation. With both of them having different abilities it provides different perspectives regarding the haunting, the threats revealed being different for each of them. Oleander Cottage feels like it has a personality all of its own, shifting and changing depending on what the haunting is trying to communicate, and what the people staying there need. I love how much weight the haunting has on the story as a whole, how this eventually leads to a massive discovery that has relevance on the present day and the evil motives of those both dead and alive. Alongside the amazing characters that are Eryx and Rhiannon, we also get treated to getting to reacquaint ourselves with the characters we met in book one of this series of interconnected standalones. The pacing ebbed and flowed with the characters and their emotions, getting faster at the pulse pounding points and slower in the sweeter more puzzling moments. All in all this story is perfect if you're looking for a balance between spooky, fantasy and romance. Cannot wait for another book in this series, exploring more of this world and the lore that it contains.
Thank you so much to the author for sending me an e-ARC to read and review.
Author: Allison Carr Waechter Series: The Orphium Maere Publisher: Independently Published Release Date: November 11th, 2025 Pages: 347
"I will never cage you, never stop you from doing exactly what you need to, and I will always be waiting when you come back home."
The Swan is the second instalment of the adult urban romantasy series, The Orphium Maere. Each book follows a separate couple but exists in the same world with an overarching lore; thus I recommend you should read them in order. Written in dual first person POV, the story follows Rhiannon and Eryx as Rhiannon struggles with being brought back into the world of her sisterhood when all she wants is her sword and freedom alongside the complicated feelings she has with Eryx the necromancer. Yet things change drastically when she is drawn into the city's most haunted house with Eryx. In order to free themselves they must navigate the dark memories and ghosts within its halls... and it becomes clear the Oleander House holds the key to the city's secrets and they will change everything.
Rhiannon and Eryx stole my heart by the end of this book! Rhiannon is our burnt out queen who is struggling under the pressure of the world and fear of letting people down. I loved seeing her journey as she has this tougher exterior but such vulnerability she is desperate to hide. Meanwhile Eryx has some baggage from his past that has left him hardened but dang this man loves HARD. I loved seeing how far he's willing to go for Rhiannon while also getting more of his story to see how much his actions speak to his character. Together they have such good companionship!
There in my arms, in a bathtub, inside the most haunted house in Orphium, I fell irrevocably in love with Rhiannon Bronte.
In terms of spice I would place this novel at 3.5 spicy peppers out of 5 spicy peppers. There are approximately 4 spicy scenes in this book with the first appearing around the 26% mark. The spice is explicit and detailed and one scene in particular is a really fun exhibitionist scene I was NOT expecting but loved so much. I liked the build of their relationship as they show how connected they are becoming and the spice punctuated that.
The story itself started in a way that had me a bit lost but once things in the house began progressing I felt things made more sense. I found the setting of the Oleander House to be FASCINATING and how it blended into the overarching story. It’s like its own world! I very much enjoyed the mystery of the house and how Eryx and Rhiannon's relationship grew with each new discovery. They come to rely on each other and the house does an excellent job in bringing them together. The tension rises in the second half that makes the reveals of the house so important to the story and nothing is held back here as we navigate loss, death, family drama, and corruption. I could not put it down as things ramped up. The ending itself was poignant and oh so sweet after all that happened and I was grinning ear to ear at the end as we got our last moments with the characters. It also teases us for what is to come in the next book and I am HYPED!
Overall, if you want an urban romantasy with a touch of Haunting of Hill House this book will fit your vibe!
A perfect gothic, spicy, fantasy mystery set in the world of Orphium Maere, part of the complex universe Allison has crafted across all of her books. It’s an excellent second book in the series and a perfect autumn read.
At its heart, this book is about honesty and understanding—of themselves and each other—and learning to admit when they need help as well as how to accept it. Two characters that struggle to be honest with themselves walk into a haunted cottage together and are forced to confront their feelings while solving a mystery that reveals a larger, darker plot.
I wasn’t sure how I would feel about Rhiannon and Eryx. Ares and Ember were pretty hard to follow—especially their chemistry and spice. Ares, especially, as the intense necromancer MMC was so good. But Rhiannon and Eryx were great, and their scenes and chemistry had just as much heat as book 1 did.
This book picks up where The Consulate left off, therefore, Rhiannon and Eryx’s relationship also moves quickly but the yearning and spicy interactions are well paced and grounded by deep character development. These two had been attracted to one another for a while, but both felt the other should be spared. It felt very real and human to watch them want to protect one another from themselves, even though it was fear and burnout driving their behavior.
Rhiannon was so well developed, as was the deepening of the Maere and the reality of their lives as immortal warriors/protectors. The toll centuries of fighting takes on women who are used, misunderstood, revered, and exhausted was dug into and it was necessary.
Additionally, Eryx’s tragic family history and strained relationship with Roman was addressed, as was his role within the family. All while the two of them solved the mystery of Oleander Cottage.
Some favorite quotes:
“He’d told me the truth of him, or at least one truth, and I wanted to give it back. To keep exchanging truths until we knew each other inside out.”
——
“The urgency, mixed with the slow, yearning desire in every breath he took, captivated me.”
——
“I’d been accused of being bossy plenty of times, but it felt difficult to ask for what I really wanted, let alone what I needed. If I told him what I needed now, would I ever stop?”
——
“It was so easy to filter everything in life through our own singular perspectives, to put ourselves at the center of the world, and miss that other people’s lives were as complex as our own.”
——
And finally, just how down bad Eryx is for Rhiannon at all times:
“I’d wanted inside her, and now she was in me, coursing through my veins like a drug I couldn’t get enough of.”
….
“I wondered if it were possible that she thought along the same lines I did. If she wondered, as I did, right now, what it would be like to love each other. Saints knew the two of us needed someone to love. Not someone. Each other.”
Another stellar book by one of my favorite authors and I’m exited to see where the next book in the series goes.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to Allison and the Rogue Order!
"I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.” In The Swan, the narrative resumes in the wake of the events at the Consulate. The Maere have reclaimed their swords and are now navigating the challenges of rebuilding and determining their path forward amid a series of unforeseen revelations. Adding to the tension, Rhiannon and Eryx the necromancer assassin are repeatedly summoned to Oleander Cottage, a home haunted by restless and unmistakably hostile spirits. As Rhiannon and Eryx delve into the magic and hidden history surrounding Oleander Cottage, they uncover deeply rooted evils that the former Necroline leadership allowed to flourish. Their investigation also reveals long standing ties to the Maere and to the island from which they originate particularly elements connected to Rhiannon’s past. Both characters wrestle with the profound conviction that neither is deserving of the other’s love, even as they long for it. With each new discovery, it becomes clear that far more sinister forces have been shaping events for years, influencing the fates of their people as they fought simply to endure against human ambitions for greater power. In Orphium, there is always another battle waiting. Rhiannon’s exhaustion is vividly conveyed an ache so deep it feels almost tangible. She has endured immense hardship over the course of her immortal life, and at times the burden seems endless. Though supported by her Maere sisters, she also needs someone who allows her moments of vulnerability, someone who expects nothing in return. In Eryx, she finds that companion. The Swan expands the mythology and lore of its world, opening new narrative threads and illuminating the emotional and physical costs borne by those who take on responsibilities others would avoid. The novel captures the grief, fatigue, and lingering pain of long lived lives in every interaction, yet it also offers glimmers of fragile hope suggesting that transformation is possible with love, support, and the courage to continue striving for change. 💛
***Having not read the first book in the series, I was very confused at first. I was missing many elements to fully understand certain dynamics and concepts of the World of the Ophium Maere. I highly recommend reading The Consulate even though they are considered standalone (they are very interconnected and the stories follow each other chronologically). However, I was still able to enjoyed the book and for sure I'll read the first one. ***
I found the universe rich and interesting, making me want to learn more about the lore and discover the mysteries surrounding it. What charmed me about this book was the way the authmor managed to write strong characters, broken by the violence of a divided world, but also possessing a vulnerable side. Individually, Rhiannon and Eryx won me over, however the relationship they were able to develop, how they marvel at each other and support each other in both their achievements and their pain touched me even more. Allison Carr Waechter brilliantly portrayed the challenges of mental health. Grief, self-sacrifice, guilt, devaluation and burnout — it was easy to feel and empathize with the characters. The found family added a tenderness to the gothic and melancholic atmosphere.
If you like urban setting with a touch of paranormal and being moved by through endearing characters who are trying their best to heal from their haunting past/traumas, you should try this series.
Thank you so much for this opportunity to read it as an ARC 🫶🏻
Love, love, LOVE Allison Carr Waechter and I love, love, love The Swan. The story picks up immediately after what happens in The Consulate - Rhiannon and Eryx decide that they will go to Oleander House in an effort to solve the mysteries that lurk there. As the two of them spend time getting to know one another and learning about their histories, it’s clear that there’s more than meets the eye in every aspect of the story. Rhiannon is well past feeling burnt out (she’s honestly getting a bit crispy at this point) and while Eryx wants nothing more than to help her, his own past is what holds him back. Meanwhile the haunted house that is Oleander House seems to be hiding much more than anticipated.
I love how fleshed out The World of the Orphium Maere is and I adore Rhiannon and Eryx’s story. Reading about Rhiannon made me feel seen. It’s easy feeling like there’s a specific role I have to be or a specific part I have to play and sometimes, a nap sounds like the perfect remedy. But when there’s someone who can see that and someone who wants to take care of you? That makes things a bit easier even when it’s hard. As I mentioned, the Orphium is very fleshed out and I really love the mystery and intrigue in this story. I don’t know what magic is being woven but it’s very difficult to not get enchanted by what happens. If you read The Consulate and you were awaiting the arrival of The Swan, you don’t want to miss this!
Thank you so much to Allison Carr Waechter for the gifted ARC. I’m so in love with the world and I can’t wait to see what’s next! All opinions are my own.
"It was so easy to filter everything in life through our own singular perspectives, to put ourselves at the centre of the world, and miss that other people's lives were as complex as our own."
Allison has such a gift for not only immersive storytelling, but also creating space within that story for exploring existential themes. When I ARC read The Consulate, I was struck by how deeply it affected me. I loved the story of the Orphium Maere, but I was fascinated by the questions it had posed to me as I read.
The Swan had the same effect, only magnified. I resonated so much with Rhiannon in so many ways, with the dynamic between her and her sistren, with Eryx, and her mother. She is both extremely resilient and vulnerable. Pragmatic but also leads with her heart. She's a powerful, seasoned warrior who also loves to paint her nails pink and have sleepovers with her sisters.
"Warrior princess" is so apt for her in so many ways. Also, how cool is it to have a sword metaphysically bonded to your spine for whenever you need it?
Eryx is such a swoonworthy MMC not only for his "Touch her and die" vibes, but for how he takes care of her in a myriad of ways, and the emotional depth of his character. Absolutely love their dynamic.
I'm very excited to see how this series continues with the rest of the Maere!
The Swan follows Rhiannon and Eryx, first introduced in the series' first book, The Consulate. While reading book one is beneficial to understanding the overall world dynamic, the couple is written to stand on their own. Part escape room mystery and part political and family drama, the novel feels most like a paranormal mafia romance with some mythology and futuristic dystopian vibes mixed in. The strongest part of the book for me was the haunted house mystery and Rhiannon and Eryx’s relationship dynamic there. The weakest part was the relationship between Rhiannon and her mother, which was less developed and not as emotionally impactful for me. However, I enjoyed The Swan more than The Consulate, largely because I liked Eryx more as a character between the exploration of his backstory, his care for Rhiannon, and his own character's healing and growth. Readers who liked The Consulate will be sure to appreciate this next installment. While these books are not as spicy (although still adult romances), readers who like series such as the Dark Olympus may also find something new to enjoy here. Thank you to the author for an advance copy of this book! All opinions are my own.
Another fantastic read from Allison Carr Waechter! I loved getting to know Eryx and Rhiannon in this book. Although you can read this as a stand alone, I think it makes more sense if you read The Consulate first. And that is another excellent read, so you won’t regret it!!
Rhiannon’s character was so relatable, and I felt so much for her as she was dealing with her issues. She feels like she needs to be there for everyone and do everything, but she is also getting burnt out from always being what everyone needs her to be.
When she and Eryx go into the haunted cottage, she finally gets a chance to slow down. Now, it’s haunted, so it isn’t quite that simple of course! But the way Eryx looks out for her made me melt!
I also really loved how we got to see the complex relationships between the Maere, both from Rhiannon’s POV and from Eryx’s. We see that it isn’t “perfect” (because literally no relationship can be) but that they really truly care about each other. And that is what actually matters.
Thank you so much to Behind the Pages for this e-arc!
The Swan is the second installment in the Orphium Maere series. It follows up so nicely after The Consulate (yes, you need to read in order, even if each book of the series had different MCs)
While I adored Ember and Ares in the first book, I totally worship Rhiannon and Eryx. I was already in love with both of them. Their respective journey is so emotional and heart wrenching. Together, they learn how to value themselves how to communicate and grow out of their misery. The mental health here (especially burn out and self loathing) is so well represented with hopeful conclusions.
Happy to see the (found) family again and my beloved Stanley, the cute scary cat poltergeist. Very excited for the next book and "the Angel".
Allison Carr Waechter is one of my favorite authors by now, her characters and the relationships feel so real emotionally, the aesthetic so immersive. Such beautiful stories with such beautiful and broken characters.
Rhiannon Brontë is back in Orphium, on a mission to reclaim her sword. Still, things get complicated when she finds herself in the middle of the whirlwind that is her immortal sisterhood, and her feelings for Eryx Necroline, the tough enforcer from the City of the Dead. When they end up trapped together in a haunted house, their uneasy alliance reveals deep secrets tied to both magic and their pasts.
The writing has a wonderful, dark, and moody vibe that really pulls you in, highlighting the emotional layers of the story. Rhiannon is such an engaging heroine—sharp and determined yet also vulnerable, while Eryx adds a kind of gentle strength that complements her perfectly. The chemistry between them, especially with all the grief they carry, makes their connection feel both inevitable and deeply satisfying. Themes of found family and personal growth really resonate throughout the story.
A big thank you to the author and behindthepagesPA for the ARC copy!
Can I have a moment of your time? Have you ever heard of the Church of Carr Waechter ? 🙌🏻✨
I will NEVER shut up about Allison Carr Waechter’s mastermind ! She is THE best when it comes to world-building, lore and urban fantasy, and I’ll die on that hill 🪦❤️
🩸 A burnt-out immortal assassin FMC 💀 A tortured necromancer enforcer MMC 👻 Super haunted house 🔒 Forced proximity 🖤 “We don’t deserve love” 🫠 One bed 🐈⬛ Ghost cat #StanleyBaby
If you are looking for a FMC who would lock herself in the city’s most haunted house to take a break, may I insistently suggest Rhiannon Brönte ? 🗡️🩸
Or if you are looking for a MMC who would walk through hell (literally) for the FMC, may I not so gently suggest Eryx Necroline ? 💀🖤
When I tell you everything about this duology blew my mind, I mean EVERYTHING 🙌🏻 The worldbuilding and the lore are, once again, completely unique and cleverly woven to create an atmospheric paranormal urban fantasy 🏙️🌇
The plot is top-tier and I’m in awe with Allison’s imagination every time I pick one of her books 🔥 she keeps me on the edge of sanity every time !!
Thank you to the author for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review 📚
This was a big improvement over book one in this standalone series, but overall it was only a 3/5 for me. I wasn’t quite able to connect with anyone other than Rhiannon and Eryx. Their time in the Oleander House was the strongest part of this book and I really appreciated the relationship that developed between the two. The deep conversations they had and being able to share even the darkest parts of themselves was so special. The time loops they found themselves in and the ghosts they interacted with kept the pace of this story flowing smoothly. There were so many new mysteries to uncover and it really held my attention. The spice was also a saving grace; Rhi and Eryx had very strong chemistry and the tension between the two of them kept my heart racing. If you’re a fan of haunted houses, ghost cats, and forced proximity this book is for you!
All I can say is Allison could write the phone book and it would be one of my favorites. She has such a way with words and building worlds and complex characters that it simply isn't fair to my emotional turmoil.

I loved this book from the beginning starting with the depth of Rhiannon and Eryx. Not only are they strong standout characters in their own right, but once they make it through their traumas to find one another, they're a match that can't be broken. Their chemistry and tension is downright unfair.
The emotions this book rung out of me left me speechless, tbh, I was unprepared. It's a book that makes a lasting impression and stays with you far beyond the last page.
If you've never read an ACW book, I just don't know what you're waiting for. Just put them all at the top of your TBRs and get to reading :)
Thank you endlessly to Allison and her team for sending me an eARC of this amazing book. I'm a reader of your stories for life!
The Swan by Allison Carr Waechter is a well-written romantic fantasy that provides an engaging and smooth reading experience. The story flows nicely, with clear prose and a solid narrative structure. While it doesn’t venture into groundbreaking territory, it offers a comfortable and enjoyable tale that fans of lyrical romance and fantasy will appreciate. The characters are pleasant though somewhat familiar, and the plot stays steady without any major surprises or deep emotional exploration. It’s a gentle, flowing story that didn’t quite fully immerse me on an emotional level but was satisfying overall. This book is a nice pick for readers who enjoy romantic fantasy stories with a lyrical touch and a clear, accessible style. I’d recommend this for anyone looking for a charming, moderate-paced story.I received a free review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Rhiannon and Eryx are both haunted — not just by the mysteries of the house they’re investigating, but by the belief that they’re unworthy of love. Trapped together within the walls of a haunted cottage, their slow-burn connection unfolds beautifully.
I loved watching the tension between them give way to vulnerability — the way they begin to share their fears, comfort each other, and gradually accept that love doesn’t have to mean pain. Their dynamic is tender, aching, and full of quiet strength.
Although The Swan is considered an interconnected standalone, I’d highly recommend reading The Consulate first — it deepens the world, the lore, and the emotional undercurrents that make this story hit even harder.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — A hauntingly beautiful story about healing, love, and finding light in the dark.
