In the quiet town of Clover, Missouri, some secrets are worth killing for.
When beloved mailman Art Henley is found murdered in his own home, antique shop owner and amateur sleuth Della Fox is drawn into another deadly mystery. Art's house has been ransacked and his personal letters scattered like confetti, but what was the killer desperately searching for?
The answer lies hidden in Art's two unopened letters from Lydia Bland, the young woman who vanished from Clover decades ago. One letter is addressed to her family, the other to Tommy Denton, and both reveal shocking secrets that someone has been willing to kill to keep buried.
As Della digs deeper into Lydia's disappearance, she uncovers a web of threats, forbidden love, and a pregnancy that changed everything. But when the investigation takes a dangerous turn, Della realizes that whoever forced Lydia to flee all those years ago is still pulling strings in Clover, and they'll stop at nothing to keep the past buried.
With the help of Sheriff Jared Metcalf, Della must race to uncover the truth before more lives are lost. But in a town where everyone has secrets and the powerful protect their own, some letters were never meant to be delivered and some truths come with a deadly price.
As usual, this is another story where only one step of the greater crime is solved. The rest is left hanging. Personally, I don’t like being left hanging. By the time the next book comes out, I can’t remember what was in the last one making the whole story frustrating. For example, this story talks a lot about Eunice’s murder. I don’t remember anything about Eunice or Lydia’s disappearance. It is like trying to follow a story through mud. You may finally get to the end but have no idea what the side events impacting the story were. Those side events are critical to the greater crime, but I have no idea what they are anymore. I read many, many cozy mysteries. Too many to keep track of one or two books from months ago. The author needs to focus on her story rather than on trying to force readers to buy more books. She has too many series going to promptly turn out follow up books.
This is one of my favorite authors. I have read the vast majority of her books across the many different series she creates and crafts so very well. While I don't usually like books where the ending isn't completely resolved, this is book 2 in this particular storyline. Another element involving a 15-year-old mystery that has many layers, with a master puppet seemingly pulling the strings. Also, more backstory on Brice and his family as he deals with some unexpected news. Finally, he and Della are acknowledging their growing attraction. I am looking forward to how this very talented and prolific author wraps up this mystery.
I’ve been reading Diane Harmon‘s books for quite some time now. And I really like the Della Fox series however I’m finished. I am tired of reading a book that leaves me required to buy another book to find out what’s going on. It takes about a year or so to get the next one and so I’m not reading anymore of Diane’s books. I don’t like being strung along you know maybe one or two or maybe two books that lead to a solution but when it’s after like five books, there’s still no answer.
