When a billionaire real estate developer is gunned down on a city street, the evidence against the shooter is overwhelming. The case should be simple.
But for newly elected Philadelphia District Attorney Jessie Black, it isn't.
The victim becomes a symbol—of greed, evictions, and a company accused of wrecking lives. Overnight, the murder trial turns into a movement, and Jessie finds herself caught in the middle.
Protesters swarm the DA's office. Anonymous letters call her bought and paid for. A brick shatters her bedroom window while she sleeps beside her husband. Detective Emily Graham is forced to work with the FBI on a domestic terrorism task force. At home, Leary wants her out of the line of fire—just as the case drags her deeper in.
And that's before the first twist.
Jessie can’t afford to lose—and she’s terrified to win—because either way, someone she loves will pay the price.
Congratulations to Winters for a very involved plot. I really didn't see that one coming! I've read all the Jessie Black series and find they are keeping the same quality of writing, which is not always the case. He nails the two-faced approach of many politicians, which causes me to chuckle. I like the characters, especially Black and Leary. This is an entertaining read worth your time.
I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
The story begins with the shooting of Peter Summer, a high profile capitalist. Jessie was at a breakfast with donons. Summer was supposed to be there and Jessie only learned why he wasn't once she received the call. She later receives a call from the mayor telling her that he wants her to personally prosecute the killer. Normally Jessie would hand it off to the unit lead, but she wound up taking it herself. The mayor was out of town and told Jessie to meet with Summer's family, not letting her know kids were involved. Because Summer was high profile, Emily from the lead Detective was told by Holt of the FBI that they were working together. Another issue that Jessie was to face was the fact that Summer was not favored by the public because of his business acumen.
Follow along as Holt and Emily try to locate the killer, learn what the real reason Holt was involved, discover what evidence that was discovered that implicated Peyton as the killer. Read along and see the trial and both Jessie and Roche, the defence counsel, presented this case to the jury, Discover what happened prior to the case going to the jury.
It was quite interesting seeing how Jessie handle the prosecution and her concern with the way the case seemed to be going. This is a great read, don't miss out!
Talk about a surprise ending!! This book held me hostage until the very end. Honestly I'm not sure I'm glad she's the DA now because of politics which at this point in time I'm very sick and disgusted by, but Jessie can hopefully keep her morals and ethics strong and not be influenced by them. And I believe Leary will support her throughout anything that comes along. Crimes of passion will get one into prison just like any other crime no matter how slick A lawyer is..I think this storyline showed how thin the line between defense and prosecution can get depending on how its presented..and unfortunately how the media plays it out..how people are so easily swayed.
I learned tho', about nullification and oh boy, its distraction away from the true issues at hand..sound familiar? Democracy is fragile, truth no matter what is also fragile and we need to hold that in front in order to keep this crazy system honest.. I wish that everything didn't depend on who has more money. Perhaps that blindfold and the scales of justice, real justice, should be thought about more often. I'm glad Jessie is a strong smart woman and will see to it in every case she takes on.
A fantastic plot… I am in awe as to how Larry Winters comes up with such a great story line and characters, not to mention the intrigue of the trial itself. Jessie is certainly put to the test while her career seems to take a dive. I did not want to put the book down. If you have been following this series as I have (or not) you can appreciate the courage and fortitude it takes to persevere under the circumstances. Obviously, I enjoyed “Street Justice” and appreciated the opportunity to read and offer my honest and voluntary review.
Jessie is thrust into center stage in the courtroom! A place she misses more than she realized, she likes prosecution a lot more than politics. Faced with overwhelming obstacles, she will need her full support team to, hopefully, see her through this case. As with all Mr. Winters' books, this one is fast paced and completely "un-put-downable." I recommend the Jessie Black series AND The Nolan's series....both deserve 10 stars!
In the Street Justice author created several masterful plots and an exceptional court drama, that made me to finish it in one sitting. Jessie is pushed back into the courtroom and faces not only the crime, but also the mob politics and the hate. Even with the support of her team and FBI, it looks, that she will loose the case this time and maybe even her life. I received the ARC and strongly recommend this amazing book. Bravo.
I was stunned at the twist in this novel. I never saw it coming. The characters were riveting in their roles. My emotions were like riding a carnival ride. Up then down, then climbing to new heights. If you are already a fan of Larry Winters, you will love Street Justice. If you haven't read any of his books yet, you are missing a great author!
The shooting of a high profile developer brings attention to the cost of housing. Many people consider the shooter a hero. Jessie is prosecuting the suspect, and threats are made against her. This is a great legal thriller. There is plenty of dirty politics, a sleazy lawyer and a twist at the end that comes as a total surprise. If you enjoy legal thrillers this is for you.
A bit of slow going, but then picked up the pace....
Excellent book and although I anticipated reading it in one swoop it just didn't quite held my attention up. Slow at the first half I think because the author spent a lot of time and detail to the political picture. That is the reason for 4 stars.
Larry Winters is a master at writing characters that mean something to the story. The star is Jessie Black and she is surrounded by fully developed characters who move seamlessly through the story. Can't wait for the next book!
I can't put these books down once I've started. Great courtroom drama and plot twists. The authors books should be made into a TV series. They are thst good. Next one please.
Have read every book-1 through 13! They get better and better! Character development is outstanding! From where I sit-this book-sorry-this series-is must read material!
Jessie is working to put a killer in prison. She has a the struggle of her career this time. The deck is stacked against her. Who would ever expect the truth she uncover?
This is the thirteenth book in the Jessie Black Legal Thrillers series. It’s fast paced, action packed and full of suspense. It’s another gripping, engaging legal thriller.
I have always loved Jessie, Leary and Graham. This case was what seemed to be a cut and dried case. It turned out to be anything but. Great book as usual. Loved it.
Wow, what a story as always. A man is gunned down in broad daylight, and Jessie has his hands full trying to figure out what happened. Suspenseful with plenty of action that won’t disappoint.
A little bit preachy but still a good read. The last part.and the ending were great. Overall, I read all thirteen books and thoroughly enjoyed this series.
