She has kept secrets from the people she holds most dear, but now it could cost one of them their lives.
Calliape, driven by the desire to forge her own path after her fate was altered, seizes an opportunity to leave her home planet. Determined to find her place among her new companions, she agrees to perform a ritual above her skill set. And when the spell goes horribly wrong, freeing an old god into their world, she must do whatever she can to stop the chaos she conjured.
But as Calliape invokes a plan to right her mistakes, an ancient voice, unheard since leaving her planet, calls out to her again, stirring her restless spirit and reminding her of a destiny she has longed for.
To her surprise, the persistent yet charming pilot named August, dedicates himself to her cause. However, when he makes a daring confession about the nature of their assumed friendship, she is thrust into seeing him in a way she previously dismissed.
As the enemy approaches and the planetary conjunction peaks, will the walls of the estate stand as strong as the walls Calliape constructed around her own heart?
Absolutely amazing read! I was a little worried at the beginning that the story wouldn't be as compelling as the first two with it focusing on Calliape and August instead of Ferren and 99, but there was no reason to worry. This book did not disappoint. The world building was epic and on point as always. The spice was perfect. I love absolutely everything about this series. I also love that after three books, there are still mystery and unanswered questions.
After not loving The Cerulean Sister as much as the first one, I was excited for this one, which focused on Calliape and August. Immediately we're thrust into the turmoil from the last book.
It took a second for me to be like, "ok this isn't Ferren" but Calliape is a bit of a mystery and she’s ok. There was a lot of misread emotions which did get frustrating, but this book gave me all the feels of the first one. August is adorable and as much as I like 99, he's perfect book boyfriend material.
My only hang up is how Katrina writes some of the dialogue in her books - but this one is worse. It’s a tad....stiff? There aren't any contractions (maybe this was intentional?) and it just comes across as awkward, even though the characters know each other pretty well at this point. Honestly this why it’s a 3 and not a 4 - it was just so distracting.
I received an ARC and was so happy to be back in this world after I literally just finish Cerulean Sister a week or so ago. Giving this a 3.5/5.
This one follows Calliape and August and their journey through love and the craziness of the Three Worlds.
We get cameos from 99 and Ferren. And I love the relationships between all 4 of them. Found Family will always be my favorite trope.
We get some spice. It's not overwhelming. And given that the worlds are falling apart, I'm glad August and Callia were able to come together the way they did. I'VE BEEN ROOTING FOR THEM SINCE BOOK 1 😭😭❤️
I know the story isn't over. But there's something about the world building and the plot connections here that just keep you hooked and needing more!!! I'm also interested to see who the next couple is.....?
Cause I dont think anyone stands out to me here 👀👀
But this book is perfect for the sci-fi fantasy loving girlies who want some tension and world building with their romance.
This book is difficult to review. I love the universe Calandra has created, and especially loved Ferren and 99 in the first two books. I also like the overarching plot between First Son, the convergence, etc.—stakes feel high but not overly complicated. It just seems like Calandra lost these two characters and what to do with them. August was always charming, patient, hard working, and devoted but Calliape seemed like a different person from who she was in the other books versus now. Basically, August carries this book and we needed more of him.
Additionally, there are a couple of issues with this book. First the language is stilted and odd with very few contractions. The dialogue was disjointed, choppy, and bizarrely formal. Maybe Calandra was trying to capture Calliape’s accent but then I noticed everyone spoke without contractions. Even Ferren and August. Just didn’t seem believable.
Second, the pacing was a mess. The first 30% of the book was Calliape and August on Frith doing nothing. He tried to fix a beacon. She picked mushrooms or berries and then clammed up when he came near her. There wasn’t even that much character development or dialogue.
Third was Calliape and August’s relationship and characters. The dramatic irony is that we know August loves Calliape—he declared it loudly in book 1. But somehow Calliape doesn’t get it. She thinks they’re friends even as they flirt with one another. Earlier books had easy banter. But that is nonexistent in this book. There are so many parts where August tries to make his affections known and she clams up like a 15 year old. At one point, she sputters, “but we’re just friends” while sending him mixed messages. Most of Calliape’s dialogue was contradictory and sometimes out of character. What happened to the brave kind woman from book 1? All of a sudden she thinks she’s not good enough for August—when he’s done nothing to warrant such a reaction other than try to fix some broken mechanical things. I just didn’t love reading her at all. It reminded me of Mische in The Songbird and the Heart of Stone. She too brought a kind of levity to a duology but when she got her own books was a hot mess.
The good parts: Savi, Omnesis, the three sisters lore, First Son, and convergence—all of the plot points that felt like Dune and other classic sci-fi. Also loved August’s patience and teaching Calliape how to fly his ship.
I like where this series is headed and will read the next book. I can see exactly who it will be about and that will be interesting—even if it felt oddly timed and hastily pushed past in this book.
I received an early copy in exchange for an honest review from the author. Many heartfelt thanks to Katrina!
Sometimes when I hear that there is a third entry in a book series that doesn't follow the main couple, I approach it cautiously. I feel like some fall flat or some don't deliver on what can be something truly special.
But I didn't worry about it when Katrina Calandra announced that book three would be following Calliape and August. It wasn't just the characters I had fallen in love with, but how she builds Ferren and 99's world and her ability to make me connect with their emotions (I can't tell you how many times I laughed or cried with the characters). It made me excited to see where she would take Calliape and August and there was zero disappointment.
I loved how we're finally getting a true look into Calliape's thoughts during book two and the reasons she would be absent during critical times. I adored her in the first two books and The Garnet Daughter made me love her more. She's cunning, fearless, and determined to be self-reliant and independant. She wants to be equal to her friends, and if pushing them away helps both protect them and prove to herself she can be the same, she does it. It's a journey we all go through when we separate from our parental-figures. Especially since we knew Selene was overprotective, and almost overbearing, we see how intense it is for Calliape through her eyes. Any resentment she showed for Selene made sense to me after this because we never saw the full story until now.
We already knew that August was a golden retriever MMC, and the book really highlights his loyalty to the people he loves most. It's fierce and occasionally possessive, but it never feels overbearing as a reader. I never felt that August should back off; he gives Calliape space when she needs it, and will be there for her when she need it. He reads her well and there were times I clutched my heart like, this man is fictional yet I wish he was real?
I rarely find a black cat x golden retriever relationship I like, but this broke that streak. Every moment these two had, I gobbled up like chocolate and peanut butter. It was addicting, sweet and the banter added perfect saltiness. I can't name one scene I loved because it would spoil the book, and really? I loved them all.
Perfect book. Thank you to Katrina for providing me an ARC, and I can't wait to add it to my physical bookshelf!
Gotta say I was pretty disappointed with this one.
Going into it, I had my doubts. I didn’t feel especially connected to Calliope or August in the previous books. But I have been pleasantly surprised in the past, and I loved the first two books in the series enough to give it a try.
The story started out really strong, but at about the halfway point is where I think it just started to meander. Additionally, stuff just started to happen. It was giving Carissa Broadbent where magic just magic’d and characters just rolled with it.
Additionally, and this is what really did me in, the author just forgot that contractions existed in the English language. Everything is elongated like she’s trying to make word count. It’s becomes It Is. Who’s become Who Is. You get the picture. Overall, this made all the characters sound robotic and odd. And I went back and checked and she doesn’t do that in the previous books, it’s just a really weird choice she made for this one.
The only saving grace of this book is that this author knows how to write an intimate scene you know what I’m sayin
3.5 stars! I adore the world Callandra has created—the overarching religious themes, the sci-fi elements, the high stakes feel of the convergence, the old gods and First Son. I did feel much less connected to Calliape than Ferren and it took me a minute to get over the new voice that Calliape’s POV gives us. I found the writing to be much harder to stay focused on—distracted easily and lacked the depth we got from Ferren’s story and mind powers. While this is all from Calliape’s POV, August carries the story—I love the way he loves Calliape and how he gives her space and affection to figure out what she wants and needs. In some ways I wish this would have been dual POV because Calliape’s inner turmoil was often exhausting. In the previous books, we have single POV, but we get snippets from 99’s mind through Ferren’s POV because of her powers and I ATE that up. This one feels more surface level and the writing feels more disjointed and off somehow. But otherwise this was a good time and am looking forward to more in this world.
Picking up where the last book ended for these side characters turned main characters the FMC is on quest of … redeeming herself in her own eyes…
This was a great transition of plot between characters and stories while maintaining on series plot line.
- teleporting FMC - pilot MMC - soft slow burn romance - allies to lovers - space travel AND MAGIC.
Ok In my heart the ending really makes this a three star for me. I love these books so so much but wow. That ending was something. I honestly wonder if I’m missing pages from my book or something because it was so abrupt it almost gave me whiplash. I was over here, shaking the book trying to get more pages out of it because what happened??
All in all I still loved it but I’m mildly disappointed in that end.
I’m so anti unfinished series, but for some reason was able to fall right back in with this one. Maybe because the story features a new FMC and MMC? Maybe, but I liked it a lot. I also can’t explain why the spice in this book is SO good, when other books fall flat. You would think after 200+ books this year I would be able to understand the mechanics of why, but NOT YET my friends…. Still a little irritated that there will be yet another book that I don’t know about going in. Could you guys just please tell us up front how many there WILL be? Then I would have the choice of waiting for completion before starting the series?
4.5⭐️ “It is liberating allowing yourself to have more than one emotion. Pockets of joy while the world is falling apart.”
It was such a treat to be able to experience this series through Calliape’s perspective and watch the relationship with her and August transform. I was on the edge of my seat, unable to set this story down. The world constantly building and characters ever developing has me so excited for the rest of the series.
SO thankful to of had the chance to get an early Arc copy!! I’m obsessed with this series + these characters.
I absolutely loved this book! it felt like a lot of exposition, but in a good way! I loved exploring the relationship between Calliape and a certain pilot. the dynamic is different from but the same as between 99 and Ferren, and I loved that both girls find themselves outside of whatever man they're with while also having the neverending support of said man. I can't wait for book four, I definitely needed it like yesterday
I have read and loved both the previous books in the series and was able to sign up for an ARC. All three books take place within a relatively short time frame and this overlaps slightly and then carries on from book 2. The pacing is great and the storyline and world building just get better and better. Having spotted the set up for book 4 I'm really looking forward to continuing this series.
I was so privileged to be chosen as an ARC reader for this!!! This book UNREAL AND AMAZING! The chemistry between Calliape and August is unmatched and amazing! The plot was so good. I couldn’t put the book down!!! I love how Ferren and 99 were still included in the story! But also how it was still Cali and August story. I love the universe and magic Calliape has. Please read her whole series. It’s amazing! Again I am so grateful to be able to read this book!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I struggled with book 3 towards the end. I love all the characters but the interactions felt stiff and awkward at times. I also felt that the important action was the last 10% and it was a let down….. nothing happened!!! There want a lot of getting to know the MMC in a personal level either…
And now there will be a book 4 which I don’t think is necessary and could have be finished in book 3.
Way to make me feel something in a book that I wasn’t expecting to. I was really bored with Calliape in the first few chapters but as soon as I read “my place in this world is not a place; it’s a feeling.”, I developed more empathy for her. The plot seemed more realistic with this perspective. It went much deeper than the “I have to find my purpose in the world” trope. Oddly enough better than the second!
I was thrown by the change of POV while the main story continued. Not as big of a fan of the new FMC, I liked her as a side character, but found her frustrating as the narrator.
