Did Not Finish

I only read about 5 chapters of this book and DNF. I feel like there are 2 styles of Sci Fi writing. Style 1: The author gives the reader a basic understanding of the science/technology of their world and then spends the rest of the time on character development, interactions, and dialogue along with plot movement. Style 2: The author wants the reader to have an in depth knowledge of the science/technology of their world so they spend a lot of time on that aspect along with the plot and less time on character development. This book for me even after 5 chapters was solidly in style 2 and I personally am a style 1 sci fi reader. I just don’t want to spend time reading a style of writing I genuinely don’t like. Style 2 to me feels like a college lecture course or reading a technical manual.

A wise computer science teacher once told me "Computers are the perfect children. They do exactly what you tell them to. So if your software is acting up, it's your fault as a parent."

I feel like this book really took that concept, applied it to AGI, and ran with it. I really enjoyed the concept that, like most other forms of consciousness, digital consciousness can also benefit from guardrails aiming to nurture it. Another piece of this book that really impressed me was the respect the team members held for one another, whether human or machine. The only time this mutual respect shatters is when character's aren't up front about their natural vs artificial status.

Some things that didn't work for me:
1) Developing an AI without guardrails - no developer would actually do this.
2) Repetition of specific phrases as well as information. These characters experience a lot of chills and often repeat themselves in conversation!

Overall a solid read with some big questions and strong concepts. I am looking forward to the future stories this book inspires as AI fiction as a genre takes off.

Cyber Inference is a smart, gripping techno-thriller that combines the thrill of hacking with the looming dangers of artificial intelligence. The story follows Cy Quinn from his college dorm room breakthrough to his high-stakes role at the Dirac Think Tank, where ethical choices could decide the fate of humanity. What I really liked was how the book balanced the science and action—it explained complex ideas without slowing down the story, and the constant tension kept me turning the pages. I enjoyed reading it because it felt both exciting and thought-provoking, like a warning wrapped in an adventure.

This book is like Mr. Robot meets The Matrix—and I was OBSESSED. 🤖⚡ Cyber Inference has hackers, shadowy corporations, AI gone wild, and just the right amount of brain-bending science to make me feel smart while still biting my nails. I couldn’t stop flipping pages because every chapter made me wonder: who’s lying, who’s winning, and can humanity even pull this off? If you’re into high-stakes thrills that make your pulse race and your brain buzz, trust me—you want this ride. 🚀💻🔥

This is a creative science fiction novel where a dorm room technojock determines the future of cyber security and artificial intelligence. Yocam paints a provocative picture of this world where human intelligence can be created, simulated and exploited. If you like science fiction and speculative fiction, give this book a whirl.

I got this book from the goodreads giveaway.
As someone who has had an interest in tech related content or media for the longest time, I've always wanted to find a book that combined tech and action/thriller. And this book does just that.
The beginning hooks you in so quickly and you won't be able to stop.

Interesting concept. But at 25% read it seemed repetitive and I could see the end coming a mile away. Reading the epilogue confirmed that belief. DNF at 25%

This novel has excellent intentions, but unfortunately it is written in such a mannered and tedious way that it makes you want to slit your wrists. So, if the aim was to provide the reader with the tools to better understand the risks of artificial intelligence from the point of view of someone very knowledgeable on the subject, I would say that it has failed miserably.
