Idril I’ve spent nine years as my father’s prisoner—an Omega he’s kept hidden, medicated, and controlled. When I discover what he’s planning for me, I run. I don’t make it far. A series of tragic events lead me straight to three Vampire warriors who are convinced I’m working for the enemy. That I’m my father’s daughter in every way that matters. That whatever happened to tear their world apart is somehow my fault.
Now I’m trapped in the hands of men who hate me almost as much as they hate themselves for wanting me. To them, I’m nothing but a traitor. But they might be the only chance I have to survive… if I can convince them I’m not their enemy.
Caelan She’s mine. I knew it the moment I saw her. The moment every instinct in me locked on and refused to let go. My pack doesn’t trust her—they have reasons not to. But I can’t explain what I feel, and I’ve stopped trying. The bond between us doesn’t care about logic or proof. Neither do I. I’ll burn the world to keep her safe. Even if it means going to war with my brothers.
Daxen Idril is a distraction I can’t afford. The world is tearing itself apart, Omegas are disappearing, and she’s at the center of every unexplained surge, every impossible answer I can’t find. She’s the daughter of our enemy. The last person we should trust. My hate sharpens every time I look at her and remember what her family has cost us. But when she looks at me with those haunted eyes, I can’t shake the feeling that the truth I’ve been hunting my whole life might be standing right in front of me.
Vaelenor I should treat her like the threat she is. I do. But something in me refuses to watch her break. I’ve lived my whole life fighting the curse in my blood, the violence that claws at my insides. With her… everything quiets. When I look at her, my instincts refuse to see the traitor everyone else does—even if I keep treating her like one. She’s an Omega. The daughter of a monster. Someone we should never have let through our doors. I don’t know what scares me more. That I’ll destroy her… or that I won’t be able to let her go.

Maybe a 3.5? Kinda plot holy, but also entertaining enough to not want to put down. I did find myself skipping over or skimming some parts due to irritation. Also, Dax is a dingus. You can tell us how very intelligent he is, but none of it was shown. Intelligent people challenge their own biases. I would be interested to see where this goes with Idril being treated better while making little bonfires of the two chumps who do not deserve her.
My thoughts and observations after reading this giant book:
- if you read the sample, know that the first 20% are rough, with a lot of infodumping and in my opinion, overexplaining. I personally prefer to get to know my cast - both heroes and villains - by their own actions and dialogues and less so from their inner monologue that explain the dynamics in detail. Caelan's POV was especially difficult to get through because the poor guy had to explain his whole organization and introduce his pack, all while doing reconnaissance on an enemy base. Can you believe that? Poor guy. It was painful to witness. In a 700 page book, maybe you will feel that 20% is already a heavy investment to soldier through and that's fair. But I am a veteran Wattpad and AO3 reader and since the market has been flooded with AI garbage, I have a lot of renewed vigor in reading HANDMADE, ECO, bad writing.
- my main draw to this story was 2 things: this is a big chonker of a debut, giving me ample opportunity to check out the writing, the story, the character development, rather than being a long prologue for the series. // secondly, the author promises that her butthole MMCs, two in particular, will go through a lot of grovelling in books 2 & 3 which is honestly something I never ever see and I am here for it
- the MMCs in question are absolute thundercunts ofc, but on top of being callous, mean, aggressive, unreasonable, abusive and out of line, one of them also brought something new to the table that I have rarely seen in reverse harem omegaverse: he's a COWARD!! to be clear, there are as many coward MMCs in omegaverse as fish in the sea but seeing an author actually acknowledge that in her narration?? I have never seen that & I can't wait to see him flayed alive for that tbh
- there is ofc one MMC, Caelan, who is best boy and who is on the FMC's side - too bad he's in a coma so we never really find out what his personality is like. I am hoping for some development in book 2
- the story is actually mildly interesting and gets better towards the end of book 1, with some unexpected twists and more depth. Curious to see where this is going, as it is clear that some thought and effort went into this.
I devored this book in 2 days I couldn't put it down I was hooked and It pulled me in straight away and didn't let me go until the end.
I was such an amazing read and I fell in love with the book instantly This book has a lot of world building which I love and I loved the character development throughout the book
I felt like I was actually right next to the characters throughout the book while I was reading.
It is a slowburn book but bernadette took the time to build the scenes of the story with very page I took and made sure we fully understood what was happening I experienced every emotion while reading this book
The cliffhanger had me going oh my gosh how could she do that to me.
I can't wait for book 2 now to carry on and find out
This is my honest review, thankyou for allowing me to be an arc reader
Caged is a dark fantasy Omegaverse romance. This book includes why choose, enemies to lovers, fated/rejected mates, magic, prophecies, hidden pasts and secrets, vampire alpha MMC’s, forced proximity, and a touch starved Omega human FMC.
I absolutely devoured this book. I cannot even express to you how good it was. Putting it into words for some reason doesn’t seem good enough. As soon as I finished the book I sent a message to the Author so that I could tell her how fantastic her book was and I never, ever, do that.
From the very beginning of the book, I was already obsessed with Caelan (MMC), just his demeanor and vampire sexiness had me drooling over his character. The other MMC’s are Daxen and Vaelenor, with the FMC Idril. Daxen is stubborn and an Alphahole. Vaelenor uses humor as a coping mechanism and is afraid to say what he really wants. Idril is cautious with trained reactions and has been in a cage for most of her life. Getting to see Idril come out of her shell and experience feelings she never has before was one of my favorites in this book. I just loved her character growth and can’t wait to see where it goes in book 2. Bernadette took the time to develop the characters in depth in this book, and it is a very important factor in understanding their motives and reactions to certain situations. The world building is just the same, it was done so perfectly and is easy to visualize. I think that this has to be one of my new favorite Omegaverse books, hands down.
This is a slow burn romance with only a few spicy scenes, and I thought that would be off putting to me because those are my typical kind of reads. You can feel the tension between the characters and I felt like I was living right alongside them in this story. I kept rooting for them to finally put away their fears and finally just give into their emotions and do the deed! Book 2 is set up to be extra spicy with the buildup between the characters.
The cliffhanger in this book and the secrets that were revealed at the end had my jaw on the floor and my mind trying to see where the next book would go. This book has stayed at the forefront of my mind ever since I finished it. I would highly recommend reading this book!
I would like to thank Bernadette Blackthorn for the opportunity to read and review this amazing book. It was a phenomenal read and I cannot wait for book 2.
I was not prepared for how suffocating Caged feels and I mean that as the highest compliment.
This book doesn’t flirt with darkness. It sits in it. The tension is claustrophobic, the vulnerability is raw, and the emotional damage? Immediate. You can feel the desperation in every interaction, every shift in power, every fragile moment of humanity trying to survive inside something brutal.
And the comfort? It’s not soft. It’s protective in a “touch them and you die” way. It’s survival. It’s messy. It’s the kind that forms under pressure and feels almost dangerous because of how intense it is.
I was stressed. I was uncomfortable. I was deeply attached.
If you like your hurt/comfort with sharp edges, moral grayness, and a constant sense of emotional captivity, this will absolutely cage you too.
I started this book and I knew right away that I was going to love it. I'm a bit obsessed with omegaverse books and I take every chance to read them that I can. Very few have really disappointed me. This one has surpassed my expectations. We get a fantasy world with world building that isn't dumped it's sprinkled. It's not overwhelming and yet not underwhelming either. The characters banter is believable and honestly brings that best moments during times that are heavy. The characters are also so freaking relatable. I dropped into the author's DMs on this one and literally gave reactions through start to finish. This is definitely a book that I didn't want to have end.
While reading I loved picking up little easter eggs from real life and other things which really gave it some great comparisons. I love how on edge everyone is when everything around them is suddenly changing which brings a bit of reality in on their situation as well.
Riven I'm going to say is probably my most favorite character throughout this story and he's not our main focus but he has important moments and he provides so much intrigue especially with his best friend being Dax who's his polar opposite. Our trio of Alpha's my favorite is of course Caelen. The Vae and Dax. I don't want to say much about these characters simply because they are entirely worth meeting and seeing what you see about them. They all have a past, they all fight with their instincts and come to realizations with different methods. It's not a nice world they are in currently but I can definitely say that Idril our FMC is a strong character and knows when she should have her moments. I cannot wait to see what comes of her and the guys in book 2.
If you're looking for a book with a serious tone, comedic relief when it's needed, references to real world that fits the fantasy, banter that is on point and top notch as well as magic, bonds, bullying, and the over the top jealous and possessive hero..... READ THIS BOOK. I'm going to be eagerly awaiting book 2 because I'm gonna need to devour it ASAP.
3.5 stars. Man, this book had potential to be a 5 star read - I was pretty riveted - but it desperately needs editing, both for brevity and spelling problems.
This book is insanely repetitive. Easily a third to half of this 700+ page book could be cut out without affecting the storyline at all.
For example, it was established very early on how much Dax hated omegas, but the author bashes you over the head with it practically every chapter. Another example, a character's scent was described, and then 2 paragraphs down it was brought up again using the exact same sentence. (We got it the first time.) I ended up skimming a lot due to stuff like this.
That said, the story was interesting and unique and I'll still read the next one because I want to know more. I sure as hell hope she tells Dax and Vae to fuck off forever once they finally realize she's their mate and try to get her back, cuz the amount of shit they did to her is unforgivable in my opinion.
“What is wrong with me? Why do all those who are supposed to protect me hurt me instead?”
Had me enthralled the entire time. There is so many questions, mysteries, and history that need answers to. These boys had me so mad. They better GROVEL and beg for forgiveness. Idril Is so strong and brave. Besides their frustrating behaviors towards Idril they are all intriguing. Definitely need more of Silas chaos and Rivens history. And that ending are you trying to kill us. I need book two yesterday please.
This book is an amazing read! There is world building and character development that shows this new author has an absolute talent and skill that will be a thrill to read. I fell in love with the way the characters develop, its a slow burn with the beautiful relationships that build and characters that show nuance and amazing pieces of humanity.
This book was fantastic from start to finish. The story pulled me in right away and never let go — the kind of read where you promise yourself “just one more chapter” and suddenly an hour has passed. Definitely recommend!
Caged By Bernadette Blackthorn ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Caged by Bernadette Blackthorn, which is a dark fantasy Omegaverse romance and the first book in The Last Daughter series. I just finished Caged, and my heart is still pounding! This book is an absolute masterclass in dark fantasy. The story follows Idril, a touch-starved human Omega who has spent nine years as her father's prisoner. When she finally manages to escape his control, she ends up right in the path of three powerful vampire warriors—Caelan, Daxen, and Vaelenor—who believe she is a traitor working for their enemy. The tension is sky-high as Idril tries to survive while trapped with men who both distrust and deeply desire her. Bernadette Blackthorn’s writing is incredibly immersive and emotionally raw. She weaves a complex world of ancient prophecies, magic, and intense "why choose" dynamics that kept me glued to every page. I loved how Idril’s resilience shines through even in her most vulnerable moments, and the chemistry with her three Alphas is nothing short of electric. If you enjoy slow-burn romance with high stakes, morally grey heroes, and a story that truly makes you feel for the characters, you need to add this to your TBR shelf immediately! I can’t wait for the next installment of this series.
10/10 Would recommend this book to all family and friends.
Angst ✅ Realistic Drama ✅ World Building ✅ Banter/Hilarious Harem Monologue ✅✅ Emotional rollercoaster ✅ Impending Grovel ✅✅
I am absolutely enthralled with this beautiful masterpiece Bernadette has created. We follow our heroine, Idril, as she braves her abusive past and lands in the care of her supposed mates...and what an emotional roller coaster it is to get there. So many authors nowadays struggle to really capture the realistic side of hurt/betrayal oftentimes avoiding the necessary evils that would make the MMC's dislikable. To be clear, even when she does end up in their care they are cruel and nasty to the poor girl. Your heart breaks for Idril because she's already been through so much emotional and physical torture you just want to jump through the page and give her the biggest hug, and slap the everloving life out of the mates who were supposed to protect her. The MMC's were fleshed out beautifully with tragic pasts of their own, but never in a 'my past sucks worse so that's why I'm the way I am' kind of way. The entirety of the story you can actually understand their angst, and surprisingly root for the third brother building up to make the other 2 pay for their behavior. The world building was phenomenal, I lost many hours of sleep just existing in this expansive world she's created with just enough context clues to come to my own opinions rather than being simply told what to think. Also the lack of Body Betrayal Syndrome was such a refreshing breathe of air especially considering this was an Alpha/Omega type book. I'm so excited and selfishly disappointed that I have to wait a bit for the second book to come out. Please give this a try, you won't regret it.
I have received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
"Yes. Yours. Always yours. I’ll set it all ablaze before I let them part us." Caelan - Alpha Vampire MMC
Caged by Bernadette Blackthorn was a fitting name for this book. The emotional turmoil of this story was intense and left a lasting impression. Caged is a dark omegaverse novel with a fantasy twist. The FMC Idril is an omega who has been held captive and experimented on by her father for the last decade and things start to get progressively worse in her household. Just when you think her situation has reach rock bottom, Adril is "rescued" by three alpha male vampires. They think she is working for her father and Adril is just trying to survive a world she doesn't understand. It was very easy to immerse myself into the story as the world building was vivid and detailed and the characters were engaging. I loved Idril's character and her continued fight for survival. Idril's strength of character showed us that even the timid and quiet aren't necessarily weak. Every moment where she was mistreated, or belittled was intense and brutal. It was hard to read these moments where she broke, but you also saw she had an ember of strength that refused to go out. I imagine book two will show Adril turning the tides on everyone who doubted and mistreated her with intense grovelling ensued. I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait for book two. Please check your trigger warnings.
This book was amazing from the first chapter. It’s dark. It’s emotional. She slowly builds these characters: Idril, her father, Caelan, Dax, Vaelenor and their relationships. She took her time building their world. It wasn’t rushed, it wasn’t wordy, it was fluid and it was beautiful. It gradually builds up and then it’s non stop. I felt all the emotions-happy, angry, sad, disbelief. It was an absolute rollercoaster. I found myself wanting to read fast because I needed to know what was going to happen but I forced myself to slow down because I didn’t want it to be over. This book wasn’t a matter of one more chapter but I need to stay up and finish this book. The cliffhanger? Didn’t see it coming. The book hangover? It’s brutal.
“I hope when that girl learns how to hate you properly, you both fucking choke on it.”
Omg wow okay—I knew this one was going to hurt, but, DAMN. This is an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end. Vampires/Alphas/Omegas/Wolven/Magic/Prophecies—Caged has it all. These characters were beautifully written, especially FMC Idril.
If you like dark, why choose romantasy, don’t sleep on this one. Every other page will be blurry, but this is a book that will stay with you for a while.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book in advance, Luna Literary, and the author, Bernadette Blackthorn! Before I even read the synopsis, the cover completely blew my mind... (Artist: gaiarart) Then I read what it would be about, and it made me even more curious!👀
Okay, let's start by saying that I've never read anything like this before. As I said, the cover is incredibly beautiful, and I decided right then and there that I had to read this book. Our protagonist is Idril, who is being held captive by her father and is experimenting with her blood on other omegas. One day, she takes the courage and, given the opportunity, tries to escape. Not counting the consequences she has to face, after her father arrives home earlier than expected that day and catches her on the run.
The story is written from an alternate perspective, so we can learn about the events through the perspectives of Idril/Daxen/Caelan/Vaelenor/Jonathan Varenthrall 1x/.
One of the main threads of the story is what happens to Idril, and the other is the thread of the Vampire Warriors, who are an organization and have been working for many centuries to save the defenseless and needy from the Severeds ([literally translated as cut off] they were once vampires, but their lust for power turned them into severeds) and anyone who wants to harm them.
The vampires are investigating a certain Jonathan Varenthrall, as a series of Omega disappearances are occurring in the city. That's how they connect with Idril. On one occasion, they send one of their fellow vampires, Caelan, on a mission to scout the area. But for the first time in his life, he says no to his packmate and the mission leader, Dax, when Caelan discovers Idril at the Varenthrall residence. Things get complicated from there, as the man thinks he's discovering an irresistible bond between him and the girl.
During the mission, their companion is badly injured, but they arrive just in time to save him. However, they blame Idril for everything and blindly speak their own truth, ignoring every word Idril says. They treat her in every way, but not the way a victim should be treated. The poor omega has experienced terrible torment. Caelan is the only one who sees what is happening clearly. The other members of the pack (Dax and Val) bite her wherever they can. Not literally, of course. I also liked Riven, who is a mystery himself, but at least he treated Idril humanely. The first book was very exciting, I'm really looking forward to the sequel!!!
This book gets ★★★★★ from me and cannot wait to read the next installment of The Last Daughter series!
It’s a different play on the Omegaverse with the combining of the species!!!!
It is a slow burn but you know even from this book it’s about to get crazy when all of them realize what’s happen wing and pull their heads out of their you know what’s and accept the mate bond!!!!
Idril is such a sweet FMC that has taken alot from her father and I can’t wait to see everything she becomes and how amazing she will be. These men are gonna fall at her feet as they should.
Even if it means going to war with my brothers
I love this man right here!!!!
If you love Romantasy or Fated Mates I highly advise you to READ IT NOW!!!!
A Dark Fantasy Omegaverse Romance filled with prophecy, obsession, and ancient magic, Caged is book one in a brand new series. I never knew what kind of wild ride this was going to be when I started this. I have never in my life read a book that has had me in a chokehold from the first chapter to the last page of this book. The way that she put the emotion and the way I felt through this lovely journey was everything I don’t know I needed. Infinity rating all the way!
All I know is book two better have the most declaration of groveling that I need to read from Caelan’s pack. All I’m going to say is when Caelan got word what his pack had done to her, he’s going to go feral.
I felt so much for Idril because she’s been through so much chaos and just everything bad just keeps happening to her. She just wants to be loved and protected. Is that too much to ask for?
I love all the MC’s but Daxen and Vael need to get their act together. From that way that they treated her - mainly Daxen, thy are going to have to be on their hands and knees. I loved Riven because he was the “older brother” that she needed and definitely laid it out to Daxen.
I was squealing at the end of the book because her pack isn’t just vampires but another species. Yes please! I haven’t read a good werewolf and vampire book in a hot minute that has had eager what was going to happen. I just stared at my kindle and was mad that I have to wait for the next book.
I love that we got a little history too after the last chapter because what in the world? I knew her secret was going to be big but man, this makes me antsy for the next part. The book ended in the most perfect way but geez. Why do I have to wait?!
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.
This is a dark, emotionally charged why choose omegaverse that left me sitting with my thoughts long after I turned the final page. The story is confronting and heavy, exploring themes of captivity, control, trauma, and survival in a way that feels intentionally uncomfortable yet deeply compelling.
Idril’s journey is the emotional core of this book. Her experiences are raw and often harrowing, and the narrative does not shy away from the psychological weight of what she endures. What stood out to me most was her quiet resilience—the way her strength unfolds gradually, not through grand gestures, but through small, hard-won moments of endurance and defiance. Her emotional landscape is written with care, making it easy to empathise with her pain while also rooting for her growth.
Caelan embodies many of the qualities I look for in an Alpha—protective, complex, and emotionally layered. His presence brings both tension and grounding to the story, and I am genuinely eager to see how his character continues to develop in book two. The introduction of a potential new mate toward the end of the book adds another intriguing layer to the narrative, opening the door to future emotional and relational complexity. That said, there are certain characters who have a significant amount of grovelling ahead of them, and I am very much hoping that the next instalment delivers on that emotional accountability.
The why choose dynamic within the omegaverse framework is used to heighten the emotional stakes rather than simply drive the romance, creating relationships that feel fraught, complicated, and far from straightforward. This is not a light read, but for readers who enjoy darker romance with strong emotional depth and character-driven storytelling, Caged offers a gripping and thought-provoking experience.
Thank you to Luna Literary Management for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Feels like a personal punishment to have to wait for book 2. Some books you feel like you’re suffocating in the character’s brain and internal dialogue, but this was so well written, that it felt like you were beside the character the entire time. Wanting to protect and give comfort. The engrossing storyline leaves a lot to be wanted and can’t wait to get answers in the next one.
Wow. I am excited to have been choosen as an ARC reader for this debut novel by Bernadette Blackthorne.
This book has a lot of world/lore and relationships building in this story.
Idril is a strong FMC (with how she survived growing up with a monster of a father) and how she endured the cruelty of the life she has been swallowed by. She grasps onto the one thing that would allow her to live through all of it; hope. Out of the main MMC's. We have Caelan, Daxon & Varlenor; 3 strong and vastly different Vampire Alpha's. Caelan is by far my favorite of his pack as well see Idril and his relationship develop first. He is a strong, stoic and passionate MC. Torn between the unknown and what is fated, his character grows vastly in this first book, I cannot wait to see his possessiveness in the next books as his packmates are douche bags and completely unredeemable to me right now.
It is easy to follow, the story with it's multiple POV's kept my attention and didn't make me wanna groan with how I wanted things to move faster. I can't wait for the next book to see how these group dynamics work and and to see Idril become the woman she deserves and is destined to be.
RTC but just wanna say that this book hurt so good. It hit my rh hurt/comfort g spot.
The stars are all for Idril ✨✨✨✨ my darling angel I can’t wait to see her viscious teeth rip into those bastards when the truth comes out 💅🏼 (bonus points: she reminds me of Lilah from Pack Darling) (*extra bonus points* reversed body betrayal 😌 these men are so pathetic they should be burned alive)
I'm not sure how to feel about this book. The premise is interesting but the book itself feels disjointed. Events happen but then it's forgotten or not explained in the next chapter. When fmc was in that room with the dr and the "earthquake" happened, the scene ends abruptly and the story jumps to a different mmc and the event is not explained or mentioned again. The scene just ends and is forgotten about. There's a bunch of spelling errors but I was able to overlook them.
I devoured this… but I must admit there were a lot of typos and grammatical issues.
I truly hate Dax and Val, and I hope she rejects them. I was so sucked into the story, and I just kept waiting for Caelan to awake and rescue her from the abuse of his pack mates… but he didn’t. :(
The plot is so intriguing with Idril being a magical being with crazy blood and powers. I hate how her father treated her as a blood bag for his experiments on other omegas.
That ending! I bet Shadow is the guy showing up claiming to be her mate, and I hope he rescues her from the others. If she does forgive Dax and Val, they better grovel soooooo hard.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I really liked the concept of this story. I'm always a sucker for painful alpha/omega romances. And I'll likely check out the next part since I really want to see the FMC fulfil her heritage.
At times the book felt drawn and dragged out for me. There were a lot of passages that were overly drawn out. Conversations and inner monologues that circled around the same topic/ conclusion and went on for sometimes over 15 pages or even longer. A lot of repetitions. Like I said, I really loved the concept, but I think the book would have benefited a lot from some cuts. Probably around 200 pages less.
It's still a good budding alpha/omega romance with an interesting fantasy mix and ancient prophecies. I'm setting my hopes on the next book and I'm excited to see how their story will continue.
This probably would’ve been a five star read if the miscommunication trope hadn’t been so heavy handed. I mean, I get it, you need a vehicle to drive the rage from point A to point B. I personally really hate it when that vehicle is the miscommunication trope, but I’ll tolerate if it a) isn’t the center of the story and b) is done with some subtlety. It’s salvageable here only because it isn’t the center of the story, because that was is some ham fisted wielding.
It fell into the Too Much trap. The FMC making a ‘confession’ while being semi conscious was too much. The scene with her ‘gloating’ about the leg wound was too much. Sometimes less is just more.
I do love rage roller coasters that don’t involve OW drama, so points for that. It’s emotionally engaging and safe.
The plot is also good enough for me to be pissed off about the cliffhanger. I read it in one sitting. I would’ve probably lost sleep if it had fallen into sleeping hours. Nice little twist at the end.
So, good book but points are lost for the trope and the cliffhanger.
At first it was interesting, then it was confusing. The entire book is built on the most infuriating trope of miscommunication. And the bullying of the FMC is written incredibly tediously: as if someone had opened a wound and was happily picking at it again and again.
All the plot twists are obvious. The theme of suffering could have been dropped sooner—we understood everything the first time. The second half of the book could have easily moved on to further development. But no, the bullying continues right up to the (also obvious) cliffhanger.
