Quarterback Drill

Rate this book
Breaking down in front of a repair shop wasn’t what I needed. Neither was falling for the broody mechanic under the hood.
Casey
Football is my future—my escape, my identity.
But when my Beamer craps out in a sketchy part of town, I meet Ryker Hart, the grumpy mechanic who calls me a pretty boy and still makes my stomach flip.
Fixing my car turns into coaching his brother, crashing dinners, and falling harder than I should.
He’s rough around the edges and hiding his pain.
But when he lets me in, I want everything.
Even if that means risking my career before the draft.

Ryker
I don’t have time for cocky quarterbacks with BMWs and perfect smiles.
I’m busy keeping my shop running and my kid brother on track after our mom landed in prison.
But Casey Carter crashes into my life like he owns it, and somehow ends up coaching my brother, eating dinner with us, and making me laugh like no one ever has.
He shouldn’t want a guy like me.
And I definitely shouldn’t be dreaming of a future with him.

Quarterback Drill is book 2 of Desert Football and features a sunshiny quarterback, a grumpy mechanic, secret heartaches, brotherly bonds, emotional healing, and a swoony attraction that turns explosive. Expect dirty talk, dirty hands, and a love that refuses to stall out.

Christie Gordon is the author of steamy, heartfelt gay romance novels that explore the emotional journey of men discovering themselves and finding love. It all started when she stumbled upon MM fanfiction by accident—and let's just say, it was love at first read. Inspired by the genre's mix of passion and complexity, Christie transitioned from reading about men in love to writing her own stories. After taking fiction writing classes at a local community college, she published her first MM romance novel in 2009 with a small press, and she’s never looked back.
When she’s not writing, Christie watches boys-love dramas, creates digital art, or is serenaded by her snoring one-eyed rescue pug. A graduate of both Electrical Engineering (BS) and Business Administration (MBA), she spends her "day job" navigating the high-tech world, but her heart belongs to the characters who live in her books. Christie currently resides in the Phoenix metro area, though she’s also lived in California’s Bay Area and Minnesota (which probably explains her deep love of pumpkin spiced latte coffees and hockey).
She’s also the proud mother of two young-adult sons who provide plenty of material for stories—usually in the form of chaotic shenanigans. But no matter what, Christie’s always up for a new adventure, whether it's on the page or in the real world.

Casey Started off as a player. Ryker as an introverted "bad boy-ish" type. One is rich, one is blue collar. They were seemingly worlds apart. In the beginning, Ryker was standoffish, he didn't want to get involved. Casey came on really strong and eventually weaseled his way into Ryker's life by coaching Wes, Ryker's little brother. The story line moved on smoothly from there with the 2 MC'S learning to trust one another and spending more time together until eventually they became a solid unit. They were very cute with each other once they did start their relationship, somewhat shy and very truthful with each other. With Eli (Casey's friend) stepping in as the voice of reason when Casey doubted himself, and Dylan (Ryker's Bestie) stepping in as the voice of reason when Ryker didn't want to engage at all or doubted himself, the two men found a solid, lasting relationship.

This was an easy read, not too angsty which I enjoy. No breakups, no cheating. The underlying story of Ryker's mom Linda, and Carl kept the pace and kept me engaged, ending in an exciting way and involving all of the sub characters (Eli, Malik, and Tex) which I liked. Wes, Ryker's brother was very likeable and a great addition to the story line, becoming very close to Casey as his young protege and also becoming a brother.

I really enjoyed reading this story, I look forward to the rest of the boys finding and falling in love!

Quarterback Drill is the second book in the Desert Football series. This book can be read as a standalone but I think it's more fun to read the whole series. This is the story of Casey a quarterback and Ryker a mechanic. This book was so well done that it pulled me in from the start. Casey and Ryker are just perfect for each other. This book made me laugh, smile, and even cry a little. This book has it all, grumpy/sunshine, found family, steam, and personal growth. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book and series.

Christie has the reader back at Arizona State University, this time with the queer football players that live together (much like the queer members of ASU’s hockey team) in an off-campus house, lovingly dubbed The Desert Dog House. The star quarterback, Casey Carter, lives there with his teammates Tex, Eli and Malik, a close-knit group of friends who have each other’s backs, on the field and off.

When Casey has car trouble, this is the group he calls for help, but then his own personal angel-in-disguise shows up, about to change his life forever. Ryker is the owner of the auto shop just across the road, and praises be, he is a certified BMW mechanic, wiling to look at Casey’s baby. Both men notice how hot the other is, and Casey is immediately trying to figure out how to get close to Ryker, while Ryker is thinking Casey could never be interested in someone like him. Now the dance begins. Neither man is looking for a relationship, Casey because that isn’t what he does, his hookup apps keep him very busy, thank you very much, and Ryker has no time for anything beyond a hookup, and not even that the last year or more. He has his hands full acting in loco parentis for his 16 year old brother while is mother is in prison. Little do either of them know that this mutual admiration society is about to get complicated with dates and feelings, and promises to keep.

Along with his car having problems, another catalyst to lure these two together is Wes, Ryker’s younger brother and avid follower of ASU’s star quarterback. When Wes recognizes Casey and hero worships over him, Casey impulsively offers to coach Wes to help him improve enough to move to his varsity football squad in the fall. All this coaching must necessitate seeing each other on a regular basis, throwing Casey and Ryker together often, all encouraged by Wes. Being constantly in each other’s orbit leads to learning more about each other, then organized dates, and liking growing into much stronger feelings for both. As Casey helps arrange for help for Ryker’s mom, and offers unwavering support, the bonds strengthen even more, leading these two through a crisis and to a HEA.

What I really liked about the book was the focus on the time Casey and Ryker spent getting to know each other, slowly building their relationship; Casey’s total awareness and dedication to finding ways he could support Ryker and let him know how much he cared; the time and effort Casey put into helping Wes and the closeness that built between the two of them, forming a bond that offered Wes another brother figure, and Casey the sibling he never had; Casey’s embrace of Ryker’s family as his own and Ryker and Wes making Casey feel a part of this new family he was being welcomed into; and finally the acceptance of Ryker by Casey’s found football family, welcoming him into their group, too.

I adored Casey and Wes, they were so open, and I smiled as I felt Casey draw Ryker out from under his cloak of responsibility for his mom and brother, and open himself to more living life with Casey at his side. Both men grew in so many ways, meeting what the other needed, perfect for each other. I just had such a positive feeling from the interactions between them, I smiled much of the way through the book.

I really like Christie’s created universe for these books, and it is interesting to see old friends from previous books set at ASU cross back and forth within this academic and athletic universe, old friends popping in to just say hi and bring back snippets of events that tie these books together. I find them to be engaging, entertaining, and enjoyable reads with characters I can relate to and with so easily. The Desert Hockey and Desert Football series are both worth reading to meet great characters finding the person perfect for them, sometimes outside the ASU campus and sometimes within or across the houses for these two teams. Grab this one or another one and prepare to enter their world. I think you will be very pleasantly surprised at how much you enjoy them.

I received an ARC from the author and this is my voluntary review.

“Guys can be beautiful, and you’re one of them.”

Quarterback Drill by Christie Gordon is the second book in the Desert Football series. Casey and Ryker are totally different, but together? They are just made for each other.

What did I love most about this book? Truthfully… everything. Casey’s just sunshine, the ultimate “golden boy”, star quarterback for ASU, gorgeous, comes from a perfect family, and still has this huge heart, offering to help Ryker and his brother without second thought.

“From the outside, you seem untouchable, like someone with an easy life. Someone who wouldn’t be as caring as you are with me and Wes.”

And Ryker… wow. He’s carrying so much on his shoulders, running his mechanic shop and taking care of Wes, his teenage brother, while his mom is in prison for something she didn’t even do.

“Ryker sounds like he’s been through a lot in his life, and he’s taken on an enormous responsibility with his brother. I don’t think he’s the kind who’s looking for something casual. He’ll need a guy who’ll stand by him when shit gets tough.”

You could say their relationship is insta-love, because Casey is smitten from the very first moment. But Ryker? Ryker giving him the cold shoulder and showing not much interest makes it a real challenge for Casey, and he doesn’t give up until he gets what he wants. I loved how, little by little, Casey breaks down Ryker’s walls until he finally wins him over.

“I find you attractive, Ryker. Maybe sometime you’ll let me show you how much?”

“Somehow, Casey saw the real you, and I know he had some walls to crush, but he did it. Give the guy some credit and give yourself some.”

I loved the family side too. Ryker is all gruff but he’s also kind and protective. He and Wes were adorable together. They have such a sweet bond. I teared up more than once.

“You called Casey, babe.” “I did?”
“You did, and I heard it. I’ve never heard you call him that before. I’ve only heard him say it.”

The side characters in this book are also seriously amazing. Dylan and Casey’s teammates are the kind of friends you just want around all the time, the ones who always have your back. Eli’s slowly worked his way into my heart, and I’m so excited that his book is coming next. I seriously can’t wait for it!

If you love grumpy / sunshine, found family vibes and football, this book is for you.

I received an eARC from the author for free, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.

This is book #2 in Christie's "Desert Football" series. You can read it stand-alone, but Christie always pulls in a character or two from her previous books and this one is no exception as hunky lawyer Gabe plays a role in this story.

Casey is the star QB for Arizona State University. He lives in a shared house with some other gay football players and is spending the summer on campus getting ready for his senior year. One morning he's driving home from a one-night-stand hookup and his Beemer conks out at a stop light. Lucky for him there's a repair shop on the opposite corner owned by BMW-certified mechanic Ryker. Casey is smitten right away, but Ryker holds back. Ryker's not sure he's ready for any kind of relationship, much less one with a pretty boy playboy football star.

The first half of the book centers on Casey's efforts to win Ryker over, which he eventually does. Ryker's younger brother Dylan is a rising high-school QB so one of Casey's tactics is to take Dylan under his wing and "tutor" him. Once Ryker finally caves we start learning more about these two brothers. Turns out they are living alone while their mother does time for a crime she got tricked into participating in. Good boyfriend that Casey now is, he gets his father (well-known California attorney) to find a lawyer to do some pro-bono work and get Ryker & Dylan's mom released from the slammer. Enter Phoenix lawyer Gabe from Christie's earlier rock band series.

Once football season starts, things begin to percolate for everyone. Casey & Ryker both use the "L" word and a committed relationship blossoms between them including a very healthy sex life. As in all relationships, the guys have some issues to resolve and we get a wild ride as they work through things. Eventually we get our HEA and an Epilogue that resolves just about all their speed bumps. I did have to keep reminding myself that this is a work of fiction in a real-world setting. For example, in the real world no high-profile starting QB for a Division 1 football team would have a profile on Grindr and other similar sites and be having lots of very public hookups like early-book Casey does. Just wouldn't happen. But for this story it makes sense so relax and go with it. Four stars all the way! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Quarterback Drill is the second book in The Desert Ice Football series. Each book focuses on one of the queer ASU football players, who all live together in the football house. This book focuses on Casey, Golden Boy, star quarterback on the team and NFL prospect after graduation. He’s also quite the player. In fact, his BMW happens to break down in a not so great part of town after a hookup though he was lucky enough that the breakdown happened right near an auto repair shop, owned by Ryker. He’s a bit skeptical of the prickly Ryker acceptably fixing his car, even after he learns Ryker is BMW certified, though that doesn’t stop him from immediately being attracted to Ryker.

As it turns out, Ryker is not only a mechanic, but is also serving as guardian for his younger brother while their mother is serving a sentence in prison. Little brother Wes is a high school student who also, by happenstance, is a quarterback. Casey volunteers to informally coach Wes over the summer to help him make the varsity team, which gives him reason to stay in Ryker’s orbit even after the BMW is back on the road. It helps that Wes is a big fan of Casey’s and low-key helps in Casey’s pursuit of Ryker. Eventually the guys do end up dating, though Ryker is skeptical what someone like Casey would even see in him. Casey does a number of things over time to show his dedication to Ryker though their future remains in question for once Casey graduates from ASU and enters the draft. Is a potential long distance relationship a possibility? What about Ryker’s responsibilities to his mother, brother, and auto shop?

The men do eventually get their happily ever after, but not before some exciting events and of course, participation by the other ASU Desert Dawg football players who are not only loyal friends but also hilarious, albeit nosy, roommates. This book does refer a bit to the first book in the series (Hidden Plays) as well as a few characters off the pages of some of Christie’s other series, but can very much be read as a standalone. Recommend if you enjoy grumpy/sunshine, found family, and MM sports rom coms with lots of sweet and spice between the pages.

I’m looking forward to the next installment of the ASU football boys to come.

QUARTERBACK DRILL – CHRISTIE GORDON

This is the second book in the Desert Football series and this time we follow the romance of Casey and Ryker.

Casey is the quarterback for the ASU football team and ends up having car trouble the morning after a hookup, on what he considers the not good side of Mesa. While trying to decide if he should get a tow to the BMW dealer, he notices an auto shop across the street. The owner of the auto shop comes out to see if he can assist the driver of the car and recognizes him.

Ryker cannot believe Casey is broken down right outside his shop but stays professional and offers the fact he is BMW certified and worked at BMW for two years. Casey feels better hearing about the certification, and because he wants to spend more time around Ryker, agrees to let him look at his car.

When he enters the garage, Ryker’s brother Wes is doing his homework in the office, and he recognizes Casey right away and gets excited to have one of his local heroes right in front of him. When Casey hears Wes is also a quarterback for his high school football team, he offers to spend some time helping to coach him over the summer so he can improve his game enough to make the varsity team in the fall.

Casey convinces Ryker to spend some time with him helping Wes and then asks him to go out with him on a date. Ryker decides to take a chance and get to know Casey, and they end up falling in love. Ryker tells Casey about how his mom ended up in prison, and Casey offers to ask his dad if he has any contacts in the area that would be able to help Ryker’s mom. Enter Gabe from the Rock U series (he is the drummer for Knot Me), who does the research and manages to prove Ryker’s mom had no knowledge of the crime she ended up involved in, which in turn means the charges against her were reduced to a misdemeanor and she was released from prison early.

While there were some challenges along the way to HEA, Casey and Ryker took the time to be there for one another and built a solid foundation for their future.

Like all books by Christie Gordon, you will be emotionally invested in these characters immediately and you will laugh out loud, and your heart will smile at how their found family is consistently there for each other.

Lovely grumpy/sunshine romance 😊

Quarterback Drill is written with a light hand, with lots of humour, fun, and laughter. It's the second installment in Christie Gordon's Desert Football series and is a lovely grumpy/sunshine romance.
Blonde bombshell Casey Carter, who has all the boys running to his yard, is a top college quarterback with a seemingly perfect life. He exudes a sense of entitlement, but not in a nasty or snobbish way, it's simply what he's used to. He has perfect parents, is rich, and has lots of charm.
Ryker Hart is a grumpy mechanic struggling to care for his younger brother while his mother is in prison. Ryker is a total antithesis to Casey; he's so serious, whereas Casey is a ray of sunshine.
Casey's gets more than he bargains for when his car breaks down in front of Ryker's garage. Their attraction is immediate, but Ryker's responsibilities and the social gap between them make him reluctant to get involved. Casey begins coaching Ryker's younger brother, Wes, in football, but initially only to get into Ryker's pants. However, feelings begin to get in the way, and Casey does the unthinkable, he falls in love.
These two in love are so adorable, and the change in both of the guys is truly charming. I loved the development of both their characters. Casey in love, becomes less selfcentered and helps Ryker overcome his problems. It was especially nice to see Ryker soften and allow Casey in to take some of the pressure off him. The supporting characters, including Wes and all of Casey's teammates, really add to the story.
There is a little angst in the story, which features a character named Carl, who originally caused Ryker's mother's problems. However, this is put to bed quickly, and the overall story is simply a heartwarming and romantic one, with great character development. The guys are a great match for another, despite the disparities in their lives. The epilogue is sweet, and who knows, maybe we'll get Wes's story one day.

I received an ARC of this story which in no way influenced my opinion.

Casey & Ryker

I never truly know what I'm going to face when I start a new story from Christie Gordon. I always love to read them but they're never predictable, not really, so they're exciting and entertaining to read. Casey and Ryker were really fun to observe as they came to know one another and fell in love. Their relationship evolution was sweet and it really highlighted the changes they each went through throughout the story to uncover the truth in their relationship and their feelings for one another.

I loved how close Casey was able to get to Wes as well. He deserve to have that sibling influence and additional family experience. Casey's parents were great, but the two developed a really great relationship, just stemming off Casey's training/coaching with Wes.

As with any story. Christie's Arizona universes, the found family element is incredibly strong and wonderful to experience. Even though we barely see JJ from book one in this series, it was really great to spend as much time with the rest of the "Desert Dogs" in their group.
It was also really great to get even a small chance to meet up with Gabe from the Rock U universe because it's been quite a while since his love story came around. It's great to see he's still fights for justice and worked hard for Ryker's mom in this story.

I don't know why, but I always forget about the intense drama that happens near the end of these stories from Christie. They don't always interfere with the relationship between the main characters, but there's usually enough intensity that something goes down and it's not always positive. I was stressed for the characters in this story's drama but they handled it very well and it was great to see everyone come together to support Ryker's family.

Quarterback drill was a fantastic story and a lot of fun to dive into. I don't know how many stories are planned for this series, but I'm excited to see how the rest of the Desert Dogs fall in love.

I received an authorized copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.

NEVER SAY NEVER!💕🏈🧑🏻‍🔧

The second book of the Desert Football series gives us a broader insight into the star quarterback and hookup pretty boy extraordinaire- Casey Carter…

“I wasn’t ready for a boyfriend. For one, the guy would have to be so fantastic, he’d blind my wandering eyes.”

In the first book Casey said he would never have a steady boyfriend rather give him hookups- that was until his BMW broke down across the road from Hart Auto Repair and he met the broody sexy mechanic owner Ryker Hart…

Ryker was a tough challenge- walled up and grumpy and Casey loved challenges and when the walls finally came down they were beautiful together!

The catalyst in their once in a lifetime love story was Rykers younger brother- Wes who Casey offered to coach and who played matchmaker…

“He was such a light in our dark lives. How had we lived without him?”

I loved how they got to know each other with a slow burn of sweet dates and spending time together and scorching kisses that culminated into an inferno where they couldn’t keep their hands off each other!

Casey had lots of hidden depth to his character with lots of character growth - kind and generous and very tactile and that is what Ryker saw and appreciated!

I loved how the football found family welcomed Ryker with open arms and came to his and Casey’s rescue when they needed them the most!

Eli with his sage love advice for Carter, the banter of the team house mates, fireworks and football!

Casey’s parents were very supportive and caring and Rykers’ mother sweet and kind.

There is a bit of drama and mayhem when a dangerous convict escapes prison and endangers the lives of Casey’s extended family which adds the necessary tension to the story together with Casey’s future draft pick and discussion about what happens when he has to leave… Will Ryker follow or stay?…

A sweet poignant epilogue follows six months later with Casey’s graduation, draft pick and parental meetings!

Eli is next with a hint of a second chance…

I voluntarily received an ARC from the author for an honest non biased review.

A great storyline
I struggled with this book because I just couldn’t take to Casey. He starts this book as someone who just hooks up with anyone from apps from people he meets he’s a very carefree person. I think he is good at heart but I just honestly I really struggled With his character. Now Ryker on the other hand I absolutely adore. He has got so much going on with his life he’s taking care of his younger brother, He’s running his own business and he is staying strong for his mother who is in prison for a crime. She didn’t have full knowledge of. So he has got a lot on his plate. He hasn’t had time for anyone other than his best friend, his brother and his business. Casey’s car breaks down a Beamer that he loves. And a really good looking guy comes over asking if he needs any help. Turns out he is a mechanic from the garage over the-road but Casey’s not sure he is a good enough mechanic for his car because the area that he broke down isn’t the best. So I found that quite judgemental but he goes with it because the guy is good looking and he finds out that he’s worked for BMW so his precious car should be okay. So first impression I didn’t like Casey. But then he meets Wes Rykers younger brother who is doing homework in the Garage learns that he is himself a quarterback looking to play in college. So Casey suggests that he could train Wes. And get to know Ryker.
I really like Ryker and I like the Casey that is dating him, but there are times when I think Casey would give up too easily if it wasn’t for his good friends talking him round. These two get on really well and I really enjoy who they are together. I think the passion that they share for one another is real but for me I don’t get me wrong I enjoy the storyline. I enjoyed the book. I just didn’t enjoy Casey.
I got a copy of this book from the author and this is me leaving my honest review.

Quarterback Drill is the second book in the Desert Football series that is a spin off from Gordon’s Desert Hockey series. While it is the second in the series, it is a stand-alone novel. At the beginning of the series there was some crossover with characters from the hockey series but I feel as if Quarterback Drill firmly cements the football crew on their own.
The novel focuses on Casey, the carefree, wealthy successful quarterback of the ASU football team. He is living his dream and is hoping to play for the NFL when he graduates in the spring. His life takes a detour when his car breaks down in front of mechanic Ryker’s auto repair shop. Ryker’s life could not be any more different from Casey’s. He is struggling to make ends meet, keep his business afloat, and take care of his younger brother. The one thing he and Casey have in common is the instant attraction they have for each other.
Spending time with Ryker and his brother helps Casey gain perspective on the world around him and how much this grumpy mechanic means to him. Ryker has managed things on his own for so long he has trouble accepting help from Casey and understanding why Casey wants to be with him.
This is a great grumpy/sunshine story. Christie Gordon writes incredible characters with such strong personalities, you feel like you know them by the end of the book. Along with Casey and Ryker, the guys from the football house are all present in the story. This is a great story with a lot of laughs, love, and spice. I am looking forward to the next one in the series.

4.5 stars

This is book two in the author’s Desert Football series and this one features Casey, ASU’s tom catting quarterback and Ryker, a quiet mechanic who owns his own shop and cares for his younger brother while their mother is in jail.

In the beginning I wasn’t as crazy about Casey as I was in the first book. In this one, he was so pushy at first, like it was all about the conquest and Ryker seemed to always have one foot out the door. For maybe the first quarter of the book I couldn’t really get into them as a couple. They were more off putting to me than endearing and I wasn’t really invested in their relationship but then they developed actual feelings for each other and from then on, I loved it. The steam was amazingly hot and the book was so good I couldn’t put it down. In fact, I just finished it and it’s well after 1:00 am and I’m so tired I can hardly think straight but I have to say, this is an awesome series. QD can totally be read as a standalone but it’s so much better when you’re familiar with all of the character’s history from previous books. If you’re totally new to this series, I suggest you start with the Desert Hockey series, they’re all awesome reads and interconnected with the Desert Football series which makes it a lot of fun when they happen to cross each other’s paths. For Casey and Ryker (I love Ryker!) 4.5 stars

This is the second book in the Desert Football series. It can be enjoyed as a standalone read. Each book focuses on one of the queer ASU football players, who all live together in the football house. This is the story of Casey Carter and Ryker Hart. Casey is the campus Golden Boy and star quarterback on the team. He is in his final year at school and is a NFL prospect after graduation. Ryker is busy running the auto repair shop that he owns. Since his mom is serving time in jail for a crime she didn't commit, he is the temporary guardian of his high school aged brother. The two meet when Casey's car dies at an intersection across the street from Ryker's shop. While there is instant interest in each other, nothing happens. Ryker believes Casey is rich and out of his league. But his baby brother instantly recognizes Casey as the star quarterback. Next thing you know, Casey is coaching Wes for the summer to help him make the team his first year at school. Of course that leads to dinner invitations and them spending time together. This is a grumpy/sunshine romance. Of course there are challenges to overcome but the journey is worth the reward. I really enjoyed this book. I always enjoy a good grumpy/sunshine romance and this book didn't disappoint. I did receive a complementary advanced review copy of this book from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Casey was introduced in JJ's book Hidden Play. Casey, the star quarterback, is always after his next hook-up, not wanting a relationship, the apps are his best friend, but then his car breaks down right outside Ryker's garage. Ryker has a lot of responsibilities, not only does he own and run his own garage, he is also looking after Wes, his teen brother, whilst worrying about his mom in prison.
I enjoyed this story a lot watching Casey having to chase for what he wanted, seeing him change to a caring boyfriend. Taking Wes under his wing and "adopting" him as a younger brother, the camaraderie was sweet and you could see the hero worship in Wes' eyes. Seeing Ryker finally relaxing and taking time for himself, I smiled reading these scenes.
There was some unexpected drama that I never saw coming and I found myself reading quicker to see how it was resolved. I liked both MC's parents and Casey's parents had me laughing with some of their comments.
I love that whenever I read one of Christie Gordon's book, there are always some crossover character surprises, popping in to do their stuff and every time this happens I get to see glimpses of how there lives have moved on from when I was introduced to them.
Reading a series I get to know more about the other characters and I am looking forward to Eli's book, Casey's friend who helped Casey a lot.

LOVED this one! At first I was afraid Casey would be your typical jock jerk who only wanted to play with Ryker and then drop him like a hot potato. But he was actually the sweetest jock ever.

Even though he did intend to just hook up with Ryker, he soon realized Ryker was worth more than just someone to pass the time with. The more he got to know Ryker and West, the more he wanted to be in their lives.

Ryker was so apprehensive about Casey’s motives to coach his brother and wanting to date him. He couldn’t fathom that someone like Casey would want to be with him, especially with his mother’s situation.

He didn’t feel like he was worthy of being with someone like Casey who could have anyone he wanted. Yet Casey wanted him.

Casey saw Ryker at his lowest and instead of running away, he ran towards him, showing him the support he needed to get through this tough time.

I loved their relationship. Loved how Casey was there for Ryker’s family while also respecting his boundaries. He never made him feel less simply because of their financial status. He just wanted to shower him with love and appreciation.

Ryker took on his mother’s role while she was away with grace and took care of his brother forgetting himself in the process. He deserved all the love Casey gave him and more.

I’m really loving this series. I can’t wait for the next book!

So, first there was the Mesa Boys series, then there was the Rock U series, then there was the Desert Ice Hockey series, and now we have the Desert Football series. We're getting a decent book universe here apparently although there's not as many cameos from previous series as there are in some other book universes I've read. This second book is about Casey and Ryker and how their relationship develops. Casey had been all about hookups before meeting Ryker, an auto mechanic, but once Ryker decides to take a chance on him, their relationship goes well from the beginning although Ryker has insecurities due to their different economic backgrounds. The plot involves Casey coaching Ryker's brother Wes to help him be a better high school quarterback and having his dad help find a pro bono lawyer to help Ryker's mom get out of prison, as she didn't deserve to be there having been duped into acting as a get-away driver for her ex-boyfriend. Ryker decides to follow Casey wherever football takes him, and at the end of the book, Casey had an NFL contract with Las Vegas, and the two of them were planning to set up a new auto shop there for Ryker, which means he's starting a franchise, as he'll own two shops. Overall, it was a good sports romance, and I enjoyed it. I'm having fun reading this series.

Oh my heart. 😭💛 I don’t even know where to start with this one because I loved everything. Quarterback Drill completely stole my soul I couldn’t stop reading, couldn’t stop smiling, and honestly didn’t want it to end.
Casey and Ryker are pure magic together. The sunshine quarterback and the grumpy mechanic? Absolute perfection. Their chemistry was off the charts right from the first scene, and the way their relationship slowly deepened just melted me. Casey’s determination to break through Ryker’s walls had me swooning so hard, and Ryker trying to fight his feelings while being so protective and soft underneath all that gruffness? Yeah, I was gone.
I also loved the family aspectRyker’s bond with his brother was so heartfelt and added so much depth to the story. There were moments that made me laugh out loud and others that made me tear up, but through it all, I was completely obsessed.
The writing flowed so beautifully, the emotions hit hard, and the spice? Chef’s kiss. 🔥 It was tender and passionate in all the right ways.
If you love grumpy/sunshine, found family, and emotionally healing romances that make your heart race, this book is EVERYTHING. I’m already counting down to the next one because I am not ready to let these boys go.

When Casey’s car breaks down in front of an auto shop, he never imagines the broody hot mechanic will be the love of his life. Having only fell in love once and it ending with a broken heart, Casey has stuck to hook ups only. And with his attraction to Ryker, he figures that they can have a fun time together and move on. But Ryker isn’t anything like Casey expected. He challenges Casey in only the best ways. And he has his own responsibilities, like taking care of his brother since their mom went to jail and running his auto shop to pay the bills. But Casey ends up being good for Ryker too. He reminds Ryker to take time for himself and have fun. To do something for him and not for everyone else. And when Casey starts coaching Ryker’s brother, Ryker gets to see a different side to Casey than the sunshine cocky quarterback. Their futures are undetermined but the more time they spend together, the harder they fall. And letting go of one another doesn’t feel like much of an option. Casey and Ryker’s story was a good one! I enjoyed their opposite personalities that balanced one another out. The two deserve some happiness and it was sweet to watch them fall for one another. Can’t wait for the next book in the series!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I would give Quarterback Drill a 4.5! The main characters were adorable in their own ways. Casey was a literal golden boy. He never looked down on Ryker for their socioeconomic differences. It was easier for Ryker to trust him due to Casey being so giving and helpful to his family. I love it when a “grumpy” character evolves the way Ryker did. He was not looking for love due to his loyalty to his family but Casey helped him believe he was worthy of all Casey was willing to give him.

I liked the sub plot regarding Linda’s (Ryker and Wes’ mom) ex-boyfriend. It gave a little added action to the story. I loved how Casey and his football friends used their football skills to save the day.

I would definitely be interested to hear more about Wes in the future. I think it would be a great way to have some updates on what is going on in Ryker and Casey’s world through a Wes book!! This is me, wishful thinking!

Finally, the spicy scenes were amazing. The first kiss scene was top tier! I love that Casey gave up his hook-ups for something real and meaningful. He seemed a bit hesitant initially but it did not take him long or a lot of drama to figure out how great things could be with Ryker!

Overall I enjoyed this book so so much!

This new volume of Desert Football did not disappoint me.
It has Christie Gordon's signature style: a romance between two men who are completely different yet fall in love with each other quickly and intensely.
We love watching our two heroes get to know each other, accept each other into their lives, let down their defenses, and learn to trust.
I really liked the relationship between Casey and Ryker's brother, who finds a little brother in Wes.
And it's always a pleasure to return to this universe that brings together several of Christie Gordon's series, where we find characters from previous series and familiar places.

----

This was such an easy, feel-good read. Exactly the vibe I like...low angst, no breakups, no cheating, just two guys figuring it out and actually talking to each other? Love to see it.

Casey starts off as your lovable player, Ryker is grumpy, guarded, and not buying any of Casey’s charm at first. (Spoiler: Casey does not quit.) The way he slowly works his way into Ryker’s world — mostly by coaching his little brother Wes — was honestly so soft and clever. Once they let each other in? Ridiculously cute. Awkward, honest, tender little idiots in love.

I loved their people too:

- Eli hyping Casey up when he spirals
- Dylan reluctantly pushing Ryker toward emotions
- Wes quietly stealing every scene he’s in
- Found family vibes done so well

The side plot with Ryker’s mum added stakes without dragging the romance down, and I actually cared how it wrapped up which is always a good sign.

Is it realistic that a star college QB is very publicly using Grindr? Probably not.
Did I care? Also no 😂

It’s grumpy x sunshine, rich x blue-collar, found family, personal growth, and relationship payoff done right. Warm, steamy, swoony, and bingeable.

Can’t wait to read the rest of the boys’ stories.

I received a free copy. This review is submitted voluntarily.

I enjoyed the book but found Casey a bit too sunshiny. Ryker was quite credible, on the other hand. He may have trouble accepting that Casey cares for him, but mainly that’s because he’s carrying a lot: his mom in jail, he has to care for his younger brother, and he keeps getting correspondence from his mom’s ex-boyfriend wanting them to get back together. And Casey keeps doing all kinds of things for Ryker and his family. Seems to me to be a little too good to be true. That said, they do make a great couple with a small age difference. The relationship they have with Ryker’s teenage brother, Wes, is really good. I also liked Ryker’s mother, even though I had certain doubts about her when I thought she wanted to get back together with her ex. The plot was straightforward and easy to follow. The supporting secondary characters are fun, though they have their serious side as well. Their contributions to story development are vital. The author always keeps control of the story and characters.

This is a book that is a great read.

In the second book of the Desert Football Series, 'Quarterback Drill,' Casey, a spirited quarterback, meets Ryker, a dedicated mechanic. From their first encounter, Casey's competitive nature drives him to engage with Ryker, who initially responds with a dismissive attitude. This interaction sets the stage for a compelling book filled with emotional depth and football action.

The setting highlights a family grappling with financial struggles and personal challenges. Ryker juggles work, bills, and the responsibility of caring for his younger brother. This shift away from traditional football themes offers a fresh perspective, making Casey's presence even more impactful.

Casey begins to shed a new light on Ryker's life, creating the emotional drama intertwined with football. The dynamics between the two characters develop throughout the story. Amidst the heat of competition and personal struggles, you can expect a satisfying conclusion that highlights both passion and resilience.

'Quarterback Drill' is more than just a sports romance; it’s a story of hope, challenges, and the transformative power of connection.

Quarterback Drill by Christie Gordon is about Casey, an ASU Quarterback, stuck in Mesa after his car broke down again. But as luck would have it, he was just across the street from an auto repair shop that Ryker owns. Luckily enough Ryker is certified to work on his BMW and something about Ryker that Casey seems to trust him with his car. Ryker, the mechanic, has a lot on his plate with taking care of his little brother while his mom is in jail, to getting making his shop more profitable, didn't think he had time or the patience to have a relationship but his brother Wes and his best friend and fellow mechanic Dylan encouraged him to take a chance. Once Casey fell hard and fast for Ryker, he knew he would do anything to stay with him even if they have to have a long-distance relationship when he is drafted. I enjoyed this story of being there for one another no matter your financial status, the fun times and especially the hard times. Christie has a way of showing the behind the scenes of sports and that the players are hardworking, loveable people who are there for one another and their significant others that keeps you wanting more.

ASU quarterback Casey is on the way home from another random hookup when his car breaks down. It just so happens to be right in front of Ryker's auto repair shop. Casey is skeptical at first, but changes his tune after talking with Ryker (and seeing how hot he is). Casey meets and offers to coach Ryker's little brother and things progress rapidly from there. Theirs lives intertwine and Casey forgets about hookups and deletes his apps. Ryker is still on the fence because he has been hurt before and doesn't want his brother (or himself) to be disappointed if Casey leaves them. Casey soon finds he wants to be with them all the time that he's not preparing for the NFL draft which is still his first priority.
Both of the main characters suffer from insecurities of being enough for the other that has nothing to do with their economic differences. They deal with these insecurities internally and initially do not do a good job communicating with each other. Luckily that changes and they are on the same page soon enough. Complications make their HEA seem like it will be hard won. All's well that ends well.

Casey has car trouble and with his luck someone stops and just happens to own a car shop. And he also finds the owner, Ryker, very attractive. Casey is the star quarterback at ASU. While he is waiting for Ryker to look at his car he strikes up a convo with his brother, Wes, who is a football player in high school. They hit it off right away and he offers to help coach him throughout the summer. But he has other reasons behind it, he finds Ryker attractive and wants to get a little closer to him.

Ryker is guarded and keeps people at arms length. He is more worried about raising his brother and running his shop. Ever since his mother was writing out in jail he has been more closed off. Casey has his hookup apps and hasn’t really thought about settling down. But the more these two hangout and get closer, the more they open up to one another and start to change. Casey isn’t interest in his apps and Ryker opens up and comes out of his grumpy shell. I love these two together. There is so much growth between them and on their own. They work so well together. The banter is so good too. And the spice is just right.

Who would have thought having issues with your car could lead you to the love of your life?
Ryker and Casey's story is beautiful, hot and wonderfully written.
In this we go through many emotions, not to be limited to the following...instant attraction, heat, fright, lust, love and feelings that let you know this is your forever person.
Not only does Casey get his car fixed but he finds love, companionship, and within himself a more mature and happier person.
Ryker finds love, companionship, caring and a hot boyfriend who not only comes to love him the best he's ever been loved but one who wants to take care of him, be there for him and fight the evil that finds its way back into the lives of him, his mom and little brother.
I absolutely adore Rykers brother Wes and his mom Linda.
There is so much more to this story than the love the boy's find with each other, but I don't want to spoil it for the reader. They deserve to discover it all for themselves.
We get to see or hear about the boys from the first book a little, which I always enjoy.

Heat level is through the roof but so is the friendships, support and love.

Casey & Ryker

"But whatever came, we'd be together somehow."

Casey is the Golden-boy quarterback. His car breaks down and he sets his sights on the mechanic that helps him. To win him over he starts to help Ryker's little brother Wes train for his upcoming HS varsity tryouts, but Casey gets more than expected when he starts to fall for the man he wants.

But Ryker has his own problems trying to take care of his shop and his little brother Wes since his mom is in prison. Ryker doesn't have time for himself and a boyfriend. Or does he? The more time he spends with Casey, the more he sees he honestly wants to help, the more he's not sure what to do, but he knows he's falling for him.

Another hot and steamy romance with probably even more spice. With the help of their friends and family Casey & Ryker get their HEA. Christie Gordon shows once again that communication is key to going after what you want.

I received an ARC for this review. Nothing was promised or provided for this review.

A fun opposites attract sports romance. I'm a huge fan of the universe Christie Gordon has built around Tempe, AZ. This book builds on those earlier series and you get hints and peeks at the previous characters, which I love. Casey is a rich kid, golden boy, star quarterback for ASU. When his BMW breaks down far from the dealership, he's forced to take his car into the small mechanic shop nearby. He ordinarily wouldn't take his baby to an unknown mechanic but needs must. Ryker is the rough and hot owner of the shop. His life is nothing like the cushy life Casey enjoys. Ryker is raising his 16 year old brother while his mom is in prison for trusting the wrong man. These 2 do not work on paper, but once Casey gloms on there's no separating them. I like that Casey has to work hard to earn Ryker's affections, he's not just going to fall head over heels like Casey is used to. There are great domestic scenes between all the characters and plenty of spice. I would really recommend it.
