با توجه به اسم کتاب و نام حسین شهرابی (مترجم) انتظار داستانی با پی‌رنگ کارهای دن براون را داشتم. در کل خوب بود. طرح و نوشتار مناسب و آراسته‌ای دارد. روایت و قاب زمانی کمی سرگردان پرداخته ولی در طول کل داستان کاملا سرراست تعریف می‌شود (البته خودم در تغییرات زمانی گم نشدم). نویسنده خیلی جالب طرح داستان را ریخته، نتیجه‌گیری‌های آشکاری ارائه نمی‌دهد و اجازه می‌دهد پلات در مقام خودش روایت کند. منی که عاشق محافل سری و تاریخی هستم نحوه درگیر کردن محفل نوفیثاغورثیان را در داستان خیلی دوست داشتم. به راحتی اجازه می‌دهد این زمینه رو پای خودش بایستد بدون اینکه تلاش نماید چیزی را تشریح و توجیه‌ کند یا اطلاعات غیر ضروری برای پیشینه آن ارائه دهد. توضیح بیش از حد مطالب زیبایی چیزی که کارشان را درخشان کرده است از بین می‌برد.

کتاب را یک استاد ریاضی دانشگاه (آرتورو سانگالی) نوشته است که برای ارائه اطلاعات تحقیقات میدانی زیادی هم انجام داده است (برای مثال در داستان صحبت از نوشته‌ای روی پاپیروس می‌شود که در طول سال‌ها از گزند عوامل محیطی در امان مانده است، اینکه در چه محفظه‌ای نگه داشته شده نیازمند بدست آوردن اطلاعات فنی دقیقی بوده است).

همانطور که با داستان پیش می‌روید با مخلوطی از واقعیت و خیال و آمیزه‌ای از شگفتی‌های ریاضی، تاریخ و داستان روبرو می‌شوید که اغلب نمی‌توانید به راحتی بگویید کجا واقعیت تمام می‌شود و خیال جای آن را می‌گیرد. داستان فلسفه دارد، ریاضی دارد، تاریخ دارد … تصمیم با خواننده است که منبع لذت خواندن این کتاب را پیدا کند؛ روایت داستانی باشد، زوایای تاریخی باشد، چالش‌های معمایی باشد، ریاضیات باشد، یا ترکیبی از همه اینها. در حقیقت کتاب با داشتن مضمون داستانی اطلاعات زیادی در مورد دانش، فلسفه و تاریخ کلاسیک ارائه می‌دهد. برای کسانی که با فلسفه و سبک زندگی فیثاغورث آشنایی ندارند کتاب اطلاعات خوبی در اختیار می‌گذارد. کتاب، داستان‌های حاشیه‌ای جالبی نیز دارد که بسیار هم جذابند

پی‌رنگ اصلی کتاب رازآلودگی و مه‌گرفتگی دانش است که تنه‌ای هم به تحریف تاریخ و ادیان از فرط بازنویسی و تفسیر می‌زند (شدیدا به این موضوع علاقه‌مندم).

مانند ترجمه کارهای دن براون، حسین شهرابی این کتاب را نیز ستایش‌آمیز ترجمه کرده و پانوشت‌های پژوهشی (که دیگر امضای کارهای اوست) هر جا که لازم بوده برای خواننده نوشته شده است.

برای این سبک کتاب به نظرم طول داستان بسیار کوتاه است در نتیجه شخصیت‌ها عمق کافی را ندارند. به علت تعدد شخصیت لازم است لا به لای مسیر داستان به کاراکتر هر شخص پرداخته شود. در حقیقت موضوع داستان پتانسیل خیلی زیادی داشته ولی طول کوتاه مانع شرح و بسط درست و حسابی شده است. شاید در 600 یا 700 صفحه و طرح خم و پیچ‌های بیشتر می‌توانست مانند راز داوینچی بدرخشد.

به نظرم با اینکه کتاب نسبت به نوشته‌های دن براون متوسط ارزیابی می شود ولی با این حال همچنان خوب است و کشش لازم برای به پایان بردن داستان را دارد

فیثاغورث فیلسوف سیاستمدار و ریاضی دان بزرگی که همه باهاش آشنایی داریم کسی که کشفیات زیادی داشت و البته سندی به دست نویس خودش بهجا نگذاشت اون پیروانی به نام فیثاغوری ها داشت که این مطالب را بعدها منتقل نمودند . الان توی داستان گروه جدیدی از فیثاغوری ها را داریم که معتقدند فیثاغورث در کالبد دیگه ای متولد شده به دنبال اون فرد و همچنین یافتن یک دست نوشته باقی مانده از فیثاغورث هستند .

کتاب ماجرا را به همراه معلومات و مساله های ریاضی موازی پیش می بره و پر از اصطلاحات و فرموله . خوب من عاشق ریاضی ام و فکر می کردم حتما ترکیب ریاضی و ادبیات برام جالبه ولی متاسفانه حساسیت شدیدی به داستان های خیالی نوشته شده بر بستر واقعیات تاریخی دارم و این مساله آزارم می ده خوشم نمی یاد . بنابرین این کتابم اون قدر به دلم ننشست.

نویسنده این کتاب خودش استاد ریاضیات هست .

خب باید بگم این کتاب یه تقلید ناموفق از کتاب های رابرت لانگدونه
بخشهایی از کتاب به شدت کسل کننده پیش میره اما بخش های یک خورده جذاب هم داره که از صفحه 180 به بعد شروع میشن و خیلی زودد تموم میشن
ترجمه کتاب فوق العاده ست و معلومه که کاملا براش وقت صرف شده و هیچ جای گنگی نداره(تو ترجمه)
به طور کلی خوندنش رو پیشنهاد نمیکنم

پس از مطالعه کتاب خدمتکار و پروفسور از یوکو اوگاوا که به نظرم تلفیق جالبی از ریاضی وداستان بود، از سر کنجکاوی این کتاب را خواندم. شاید انتظارم بالاتر رفته بود و شاید این کتاب در حد انتظار من نبود. هرچه بود، کتاب خیلی به دلم نچسبید.
البته این امر مانع از آن نمی شود که از ترجمه زیبای آن به همراه پاورقی های آموزنده آن یاد نکنم

What were they thinking when they published this book? Okay, it is touted as a 'mathematical mystery' and perhaps they were trying to hitch a ride on the Dan Brown chuckwagon. I can totally understand a 'math geek' writing this book, but I can't see many people reading it. I do have a degree in math (though you might call me a 'lapsed mathematician' since now I help kids learn to count to 10 in preschool) so I was able to understand the 'math issues' explained in the text. And explained is the word. The 'math' sections read like a bad lecture. Character development was poor, the storyline a bit 'out there', and the resolution a let-down.

That being said, there are some interesting mathematical concepts I'd not thought on in a while, so I did enjoy some of it. And the historical information about Pythagoras was good. But a crack team tracking down a valuable Pythagorean text and searching for Pythagoras' reincarnated? It had possibilities, but didn't really deliver.

یک ستاره هم از سر این کتاب زیاده. نمی دونم چرا یه استاد ریاضی میاد و توی این سبک می نویسه، در حالی که رسما هیچی از نوشتن بلد نیست. داستان بی هدف که نویسنده با نوشتن اون فقط می خواد علمشو به رخ بکشه، که این کارش هم با شکست مواجه شده بود. تنها نکات خوب این کتاب، ترجمه فوق العاده حسین شهرابی و پانویس های زیبا بود.
پیشنهاد می کنم این کتاب رو نخونین.

I most enjoyed the history and the math that I learned along the way (like a visual proof for the Pythagorean theorem). The development was slow paced, but not necessarily in a bad way. However, as the last chapter approached I never really felt like I had reached a climax in story. I kept expecting something to happen, but it never really did. It just kind of wrapped up without really delivering on many of the plot points I (at least) hoped it would deliver on. The conclusion left quite a bit to be desired, though the both-and concept that rejected neither of the assumed possible outcomes is intriguing, it was never really carried far enough to feel the implications of this conclusion. Overall, it felt like a solid work from an author who is not a novelist. Arturo Sangalli should certainly keep his day job, but I do not disparage him for producing this interesting, if not fully formed, work of mathematical intrigue.

This is not a book I would have normally picked up. Thank goodness for curiosity! This was a quick read, and I learned a few interesting things here and there. But it lacked depth, like the author could have spent a bit more time to develop it into something more than it ended up being. The theme certainly had that kind of potential! Quality-wise, I think it turned out much like a paper that was submitted for a good-enough grade -- as opposed to one that someone poured time, and effort, and heart into. This novel could have been something much, much more. Too bad.

A well written history of the co-mingling beginnings of philosophy and mathematics, with neo-Pythagorean sects thrown in. The lasting influence of a very secretive figure, Pythagoras, and the staying power of his mathematical work, drives this fascinating little volume along. Well written, and well worth reading.

کتاب در کل یه چیز معمولی بود با شخصیت پردازی فوق ضعیف، داستان پردازی بد و پراکنده گویی. در کل میشه گفت در بهترین حالت بعضی جاهاش (نه همش) قابل تحمل بود نه بیشتر. بعضی جاهاش هم خیلی درگیر ریاضیات پیشرفته میشد که واقعا از حوصله خواننده خارج بود. با توجه به مترجم و نشر کتابسرای تندیس انتظار بیشتر از این ها رو داشتم و فکر نمی‌کردم بیان کار درجه سه خارجی رو ترجمه کنن. اما ترجمه خیلی خوب بود و حتی از پانوشت های آقای شهرابی اطلاعات خیلی بیشتری از خود کتاب به دست میارید.
پ.ن: تعجبی نداره که چاپ کتاب در همون سال ۹۴ متوقف شده اما در کل میشه یه با�� خوندش.

‫اگه نخوام گیر بدم، خوب بود دیگه ((:
‫نویسنده یه مقدار زیادی تلاش داشت که دن برون باشه که بعضی جاها تو ذوق می‌زد، ولی در کل برای خوندن خوب و سرگرم‌کننده بود.
‫ترجمه‌اش هم که عالی بود و زیرنویس‌های توضیحی مترجم، ارزش اثر رو چند پلّه بالاتر برده بودن.

خب این بالاخره تموم شد! یادمه که کتاب رو از شهرکتاب تیراژه 2 با آرمین خریدم.
مترجم خیلی زحمت کشیده بود و سعی کرده بود اطلاعات خوب و دقیقی رو اضافه کنه، اما فارسی روان رو استفاده نکرده بود و کلمات بعضی جاها خیلی قلنبه‌سلنبه می‌شدن!
خود داستان هم من دوس داشتم بهتر تموم شه؛ مثلا ضد حال خوردم وقتی فهمیدم بر اساس واقعیت نیس (نبود دیگه؟)
وسطاش خیلی خسته کننده شده بود، ولی ته ماجرا خیلی هیجان داشت. و متاسفانه پایانش رو اصلا نه خوشم اومد و نه درست متوجه شدم!
و اینکه به نظر من املای درست با توجه به نوشتار انگلیسی، فیثاغورس باشه.
در نهایت ای کاش که زودتر گودریدز کامنتای فارسی رو مث آدم نشون بده!

So... I'm a geek. I bet you didn't know that ;) I saw this at the library on the new fiction shelf and got excited at the thought of a math mystery...

I'm barely into it but so far it's neat.

This was good. I wish I could have given it 3.5 stars. I wanted it to be longer. I felt like the set up was good but a little long, but then the actual adventure part was way too short.

کتاب در مجموع خوبه و ارزش خوندن داره منتها قطعاً کسانی که به ریاضیات علاقه دارند، لذت بیشتری خواهند برد. اسامی افراد خاص و موضوعات ریاضی که در بخشهای مختلف کتاب به اونها پرداخته شده ممکنه برای اکثر خوانندگان کمی کسل کننده باشه.

The book "Pythagoras' Revenge' ' by Arturo Sangalli did not pique my interest at first, until I read a few pages. My curiosity grew and I decided to keep going. Pytahgoras,mathematician,a man who left no written works of his own There were lots of things in the book that I was surprised by! Such as the fact that Pythagoras was a cult leader and his followers, the Pythagoreans followed his teachings, when the rest of society just thought Pythagoras was just mentally insane. Sangalli I must admit, did a wonderful job at switching from one perspective to another. For example in chapter 1, the first sentence says “Do you know the game called fifteen puzzle? The man asked, who simply introduced himself as ‘Mr. Smith’ . Jules replied that he didn’t think so.” In the next chapter, the point of view switches to a woman who dreams of discovering one of Pythagoras authentic works. I had to pause a few times to process what was happening between different points of views. The entire story also dragged a lot. It actually could’ve been shorter, but Sanagalli had to make every detail the longest. Such as this sentence: But in reality, Galloway was well aware that an increasing number of academic journals now published electronic versions that could be accessed at very low cost from practically anywhere at any time— and not only at the library during open hours, and although he would have been reluctant to admit it, he mistrusted scholarly in electronic form and preferred the definitiveness of the printed version it could’ve been written much shorter instead of adding some unnecessary words in there. Also, I think it can be cut into shorter sentences.

This book was not as good as I expected. In the beginning of the book, there was a page introducing each character, and their occupation, to have the reader keep up with the 2500 year span Sangalli set for us. But I found it very confusing, as it took me a while to piece the story bit by bit. One example would be in chapter 8, where the life of Lysis, a student and follower of Pythagoras. The first few sentences were,”Lysis woke up abruptly,his heart thumping, his forehead covered in sweat. He had been dreaming of fire - again. Only this time the dream seemed so real he could've sworn he had felt the scorching heat on his face and heard the screams,people yelling as if they were crying for help.” There were many confusions for me while reading this chapter. Normally, people visualize the text they are reading, but I couldn't seem to do that because the structure was all over the place to me. Overall, I felt my mind spinning because of the multiple points of view in each chapter. I did learn a lot of math concepts from the book at the same time though. Who knew that behind the Pythagorean theorem that most highschoolers knew had a crazy story behind it?

This book is sort of like National Treasure but less of a race and focused on math history. The plot is the main character in this. We get introduced to a potentially existing manuscript, and slowly its backstory, importance, and journey is revealed.

A lot of little details throughout seem like scene setting but then end up being important to the plot later. As someone who studied math in college, I also enjoyed little tidbits of mathematical history here and there.

This book is a masterpiece to me. I really don't understand the low rating!

You know I should have seen coming that the big shot mathematician was Pythagoras. I thought that he was an enemy to Pythagoras until so obviously some character pointed him out as Pythagoras. (I was right about the enemy thing too at the end though). I do wish they had instead just had Thorp be the Anti Pythagoras and somehow say that the reincarnation predictions were pointing to him instead of Pythagoras. That Thorp was both Pythagoras and Anti Pythagoras was too confusing.

ادعا کرده بود کتابی به سبک رمان های دن براون
منتها دقت نکرده بود که جذابیت، تعلیق و اون تعقیب و گریزهای پرجزییات هم جزء مهم کتابهای دن براونه
داستان قشنگی بود و ارزش یکبار خوندن رو هم داشت و لذت بردم اما از شباهت به داستان های دن براون صرفا جزئیات بیشمار از نمادهای تاریخ ریاضیات و بخشهای تاریک اون و یه سری قواعد و قضایای جذاب ریاضی رو داشت.

The Mathematics in this book was not too subtle, but easy enough to follow. The story, however, was strained and silly. Imagine Dan Brown doing Pythagoras, without all the twists and turns. It was an easy read or I would have given up much earlier. I cannot recommend.

"Die Mitglieder einer Gruppe Neupythagoreer haben einen Auftrag, sie suchen die Reinkarnation des griechischen Philosophen Pythagoras. Dieser lebte in der 2. Hälfte des 6. Jahrhdts. v. Chr. im süditalienischen Kroton. Seine Philosophie sah das Wesen aller Dinge in den Zahlen begründet. So entstand eine frühen Form der Mathematik. Da er nichts Schriftliches hinterließ, ist man auf die Berichte anderer Schriftsteller angewiesen. Soweit die Ausgangslage, doch ein Erdbeben fördert in einem italienischen Kloster ein Kodex zu Tage, dessen eine Hälfte einem Londoner Buchhändler angeboten wird. Mit gelehrter Unterstützung eines Professors für antike Wissenschaften gelingt die Entzifferung. Hier wird in verklausulierter Form, der Bericht ist in Arabisch verfaßt, auf eine Pergamentrolle mit dem „Testament“ des Pythagoras verwiesen, der Aufbewahrungsort dieser Rolle steht jedoch nicht dabei. Bisher schrieben Pseudoforscher und Verschwörungstheoretiker über die Wissenschaft, Arturo Sangalli dreht nun das Heft herum. Als Mathematiker und Journalist hat er hierzu die Fähigkeit. Neben dem geschichtlichen Hintergrund vermittelt er dem Leser auch einige Einblicke in mathematische Rätsel und Aufgaben. Alles dient der Suche nach Pythagoras. Hier wird auf bewährtes zurückgegriffen, was einem „Illuminati“ recht ist, sollte einem altgriechischen Philosophen nur billig sein. Allerdings leidet etwas der Stil, auch kommt es zu Ungenauigkeiten, ein amerikanischer Diplomat in den 30er Jahren des letzten Jahrhdts. bewältigte noch nicht den Kalten Krieg. Dennoch ist das Buch als Abwechselung zu den sonstigen Verschwörungsbüchern lesenswert."

Pythagoras' Revenge: A Mathematical Mystery by Arturo Sangalli could have been a much better book than it turned out to be.

The core story, a group of modern day neo Pythagoreans who call themselves "the Beacon" set up a team to find the reincarnation of Pythagoras. They scour the world for evidence, find a manuscript page that provides clues, and seek the scroll they anticipate will solve their mystery. There is even a clever twist at the end, which I rather liked.

The problems, though are too numerous to overcome. To begin, I had an expectation that math would be needed to solve a mystery of some sort. For the most part it wasn't. Pythagoras and the main character were mathematicians and the screening involved math, but for the most part, the only math in the book came in the form of lectures to the uneducated on topics that were not central to the progression of the story.

At times the book read like a textbook, and at one point, one page referenced by page number an example on another. Not something I'm accustomed to when reading fiction.

The chronology of the book is off as well. I have no problem jumping from the modern day to ancient times, but the modern day accounts were out of order (a chapter on Thorn being reported missing is prior to chapter when he is abducted). This didn't work for me.

For this type of book, it was short in length and this resulted in a lack of depth for too many of the characters. Lots of potential for the story but it came up far too short, which left me glad it wasn't another hundred pages in length.

Short version:- Read this only if you have nothing else to do, otherwise it will surely disappoint you.

Long version:-

After reading the blurb, I was expecting this book to be of Dan Brown's style. But it didn't turn out. Overall it includes Mathematical results which even a high school student can recognize(except some). Many of the time book deals with unnecessary stuff.

And worst part was the ending. It was like author didn't know what to do and he abruptly ended the book.

I was expecting it to be a nice book but STRONGLY recommend others to stay away from it. And do not read this!!

This book is subtitled a mathematical mystery and does indeed contain significant doses of very interesting - and lucidly presented - mathematics. It also contains major doses of Greek history and culture. And oh yes, there is also a mystery, not particularly well concealed. It's all skillfully put together and very entertaining to read. But that presumes that the particular mix of interests in this novel is yours [which judging from the low ratings it's received is not usually the case]

This book would have been much better if it had been left as a nonfiction math book for a general audience. Creating a mystery novel instead meant the book felt like it had random mathematics lectures shoehorned into it, and the novel itself was not written in a very sophisticated manner. The author ought to have left writing a novel to a novelist and focused on a short nonfiction work about the mathematics and history.

Not really a mystery- more a DaVinci Code type thriller without many thrills. While only 170+ pages it felt much longer what with all the mathematical musings. The way it jumped around in time when the pov changed got a little confusing ( and I'm talking about the contemporary stuff, not the jumps back to Pythagoras' own time). It certainly wasn't terrible and I imagine math geeks would love it but it wasn't for me. Read for a challenge theme.

I could not get into this book. Although the mystery of trying to find a lost document written by Pythagoras, who according to history did not leave any written works, was intriguing, there was simply too much math! Every so often the author would digress into a discussion on Pythagorean mathematics and concepts and for someone who failed algebra, this was overwhelming!
