This is the fifth book in the Night Ops Guard series, focusing on Travis, one of the Guard operatives, and Miles, an investigative attorney for a law firm, dedicated to bringing lawbreakers to justice. Miles believes the Guards are vigilantes, operating above and outside the law, therefore, deserving to be brought down. He is delving into areas he shouldn’t, creating a problem for the Guards, and Travis is the one assigned to stop Miles, one way or the other. First, he needs to figure out what Miles knows, then decide if he can be persuaded to back off, or if a more permanent solution is needed.
Discovering that Miles is a Little, Travis confronts him using his Daddy vibes, gives him a warning, then lets him go, planning to see if he heeds the warning or if more is needed. Miles is stubborn, not willing to back down for anything, so it is up to Travis to convince him to help investigate whether the law firm he works for is involved in shady dealings with a new cartel or take the next, more permanent step to neutralize the threat to the Guards. After a breakin and threatening note at his apartment, Miles connects with the Daddy vibe coming from Travis, trusting him more, and the two work together, along with other Daddy Guards and their Littles, to discover what is really going on and to take care of it.
There is a lot of action in the story, some Daddy/Little interactions and encounters, threats to Miles’s life, protective Daddies, and some tense moments as Miles and his stuffy Beans help Travis and the Night Ops Guards take down another bad guy on the way to another Daddy/Little couple finding their Forever persons.
Characters are relatable, the story engaging, the action escalating to a showdown, and Littles and stuffies playing prominent parts in the planning and downtimes of the overall operations. I think this is the final book in the series, but all have kept my attention, the characters cross over in the books, the plots are a bit more developed than some of Zack’s shorter series, and they always give me a satisfying read. If Daddy mercenaries and their Little boys are a category you enjoy, Zack’s books may be for you. I know they always are for me.
