Breanna starts off quite miserable, barely scraping by, being overworked in healthcare (of course), renting from slumlords, with a toxic family. However, her chosen family consisting of a work bestie Kara, work bestie’s fiancee Liza and her adorable rescue ‘peanut butter pitbull’ Hippo, make up for at least some of it.
Then, Breanna gets the opportunity of homeownership through winning a television show. But, being rich costs money… How is she going to pay the taxes?
Speaking of taxes, Breanna also seems to be paying the ‘AuDHD tax’, where I feel the slumlords, her boss and even the HHTV crew takes advantage of Breanna’s honesty and her having to jump through all kind of hurdles. What do you mean, at least your landlords bring you leftovers? There’s a moldy basement with no proper flooring and barely any acknowledgement when a potential move comes up. Keli O’Connor does a great job of showing you Breanna’s perspective, while giving you a feel of how other characters might feel (like how I feel Kara would probably have no trouble calling the landlords slumlords).
There’s also plenty of hurdles in her relationship with Victor. Though I appreciated that this didn’t focus too much on romance and more on Breanna’s life as a whole, as a neurospicy dog mom, healthcare worker, but actually quite skilled photographer, given a chance at more than just scraping by.
Now, I would have liked the ending to have been a bit longer and more detailed, but perhaps that was also because I wanted to stay with the characters for a little bit longer (a common issue of mine). So thank you for the lovely read!
(Also, this is more like 4.5 stars)
