The courageous midwife Charlotte Johnson is kidnapped by a gang of outlaws, forced to help ruthless Jesse Clayborn’s wife through a dangerous birth, clinging to her skill and courage to keep them both alive. Trapped on a remote ranch far from home, Lottie finds an unlikely ally in Jesse’s oldest son and the heir to the infamous gang and she begins to fear her heart may betray her long before she can escape.
Jack never wanted anyone to get hurt, least of all the kind woman now caught in his father’s grip. Trapped between the need to save his mother and unborn sibling and the pull of feelings he can’t afford, he walks a dangerous line every day. As Jack watches Lottie bring comfort to his ailing mother and joy to his little brother, something inside him shifts.
In stolen moments beneath cottonwoods and under endless starry skies, their connection deepens into something neither can ignore. With a bank robbery looming, and an unborn child in peril, Charlotte and Jack know a choice is coming one that could mean freedom… or heartbreak. In a world ruled by blood and betrayal, their decision could be their salvation… or their undoing.
"The Midwife’s Forbidden Captor" is a historical western romance novel of approximately 60,000 words. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed happily ever after.
This story takes some heavy turns along a fairly loose plot line. When Lottie gets kidnapped by the town’s handsome stranger, Jack, things escalate fast: Jack’s outlaw father forces her to deliver his wife’s baby under threat of death. Deciding he has finally had enough of the criminal life, Jack turns on his father to help the sheriff dismantle the gang. Naturally, nothing goes according to plan, building to a genuinely exciting climax. Where the story stumbles for me is the romance itself. Lottie’s quick path to a happily ever after feels a bit too much like Stockholm syndrome to truly buy into, leaving the central connection feeling more forced than earned. A fast-paced read with solid action, but the romantic payoff falls short.
This story is about a young midwife who was captured and left to look after an outlaws wife who was classed as an woman carrying an infant under dangerous conditions. She was not expected to go to full term so needed immediate medical care. This is my review and mine alone. Norma Gorrill
