Ko and Nazuna continue their nightly jaunts, but strange detectives and unpleasant realities are added to the mix. Before that, however, it’s time for a maid café, a mystery, student-teacher night, and the joy of trespassing!

I don’t pretend to understand my fondness for this story - it’s unfocused, meandering, and appears to be about not much of anything. I mention this every time because I keep expecting to be sick of it, but I am not. Some things make you happy for no reason, this story is kind of there for me.

The first section features Aki, who was turned last volume. I really wish Ko would not call him Mental Guy, but at the same time, part of the thing with Ko is that he is in some ways wise, but in other ways a naive, obnoxious teenager (less frequent, but it happens).

Aki’s definitely gotten a level up since turning, but it sure makes Ko seem even more delicious. His advice to the young man eventually turns into a very nearly hot and heavy encounter with Nazuna, who espouses a theory about what’s sexy that I happen to agree with 100%, so this volume was already off on the right foot.

Then the maid café happens, which is not as awful as feared and brings back Kohakobe, one of the vampire women who wants to nibble on Ko. Her whole ‘thing’ is that she thinks she is beyond cute, though Ko is utterly impervious to her nonsense.

Actually, the author admits to just wanting to draw a maid café, but gets surprising mileage from it - Kohakobe gets Nazuna to fill in because she thinks Nazuna won’t upstage her and, in a welcome break from what you’d expect, Nazuna doesn’t even come close.

Between Nazuna’s entirely anti-maid attitude and Ko picking apart the entire premise of maid cafés, this very much has its cake and eats it too. Then pivots hard into a full-blown mystery. It’s not hard to figure out, but it is fun to see Ko working through the solution logically (and he’s having as much fun delivering stock detective lines as anybody would in that situation).

That mystery itself turns into a life lesson about embracing the things they make you weird and I wasn’t expecting that, but as somebody who often feels like they march to the beat of their own drum, it resonated with me.

There’s a lot more with Ko’s friend, Asai, this volume too. I really like her because, unlike Ko, she’s still trapped in her facade and is well aware of it. We get a flashback where she blames herself for hurting people, which I don’t necessarily think is accurate, but it’s not hard to see how she’d go there given how events seem to have caused Ko to give up on school.

Asai returns in a later chapter along with Mahiru, one of Ko’s other distanced friends, as the trio embark on a daring nighttime investigation of school grounds that I really like because it captures the glee of teenagers thinking they’re being so edgy breaking the rules.

They have a blast investigating the schools seven mysteries (give or take a couple) and generally goofing around having fun, until the situation takes a decidedly more sinister turn.

This brings back a character introduced earlier this volume, Anko, a very strange private detective. In her initial introduction she doesn’t seem terribly bothered when Ko unintentionally propositions her (in fact, she’s way more interested than she should be). There’s also a very appreciated Detective Conan reference.

But it turns out that tracking down cheating spouses isn’t all that’s on Anka’s job list and her methods and views turn out to put her much more at odds with Ko, suggesting that either she is very biased or Ko is incredibly naive. I’m willing to say that I think both are pretty possible.

It’s a hefty reality check that for all the flirtation and Ko’s own desires, he is still asking to be turned into a creature that feeds on others in some form or another. I’m not sure where this is heading, but it’s an interesting wrinkle.

As you can see, this book kind of meanders all over the place. It feels more of a ‘slice of life’ that happens to be about vampires than a coherent driving plot and I think I would like it less if it was all tension and such.

This series works because it’s as aimless as its main character, who similarity lacks direction. I doubt this juxtaposition was intentional, but it fits the themes perfectly and I can’t ask for more than that.

I do wish there was more Nazuna, who, outfit aside, is here to discard large chunks of vampiric mystique as she discovers the joys of capitalism and really, really leans into her beer habit this volume (she’s so easily bought).

4 stars - I love this series, but it is not the sort of thing where I think anybody could read it and have a great time. It’s great for those who do click with it though. Even with some eyebrow-raising content, it’s still one of my most anticipated reads when a new book comes out.

this was my least favorite volume so far cause I just wasn’t that interested in what was happening until the end. there’s a lot going on between the maid cafe, a new detective character and a mystery but I just don’t appreciate how there’s so many situations that seem inappropriate for the mc Ko since he’s only 14. there’s just something that keeps me wanting to read these and I really can’t explain what that is exactly lol. 🤔

After a year's absence, the gloss has worn off this one a bit. I remembered very little about any of the characters aside from Ko and Nazuna, making most of the stories in this volume lack the resonance and interest that would come from revisiting characters that had had enough spark and individuality to stick in my memory.

Call of the Night is at its best when it's drenched in nighttime vibes and the sense of another world, with different rules, that exists after the sun goes down. The episode with the drunken teacher who stumbles into Ko, and the one where Ko and his two childhood friends investigate their school's urban legends, were the most successful for me. A sense of loneliness and isolation, of the fragile and temporary bonds that form after dark, comes through strongly in those episodes.

The stories that involved some sort of plot--the maid café at the beginning of the volume, and the detective at the end--were far less successful. The detective Uguisu Anko, like many of the other characters, is a cipher, someone I have difficulty parsing beyond her surface role in the story.

The narrative isn't entirely successful at negotiating between unironically leaning into fan service (i.e. the frontispieces), and calling out things like peeping Tom photos as creepy and inappropriate. Especially true when Ko himself is pretty unapologetic about appreciating the photos of Alisa in the maid café episode, at the same time as he is working on revealing the peeping Tom. No sense in expending the energy to call it out, though--it's a shōnen manga.* Moving on!

I've got a few more of these, so I'll read them, but since I've read in another review that this title drifts into battle manga nonsense in a few volumes, I won't collect any more until I know for sure whether I enjoy the direction it's going in.

*some of this content feels too mature for junior high or high school-aged people, probably because night life with its drinking, sex, et al. is "for" adults. None of that's depicted particularly explicitly, but the "older teen" rating on the back of the book is appropriate.

Hi Gemmies, I have a new manga review for you. Call of the Night Volume 4 by Kotoyama is so much better than volumes 1 & 2! I feel this series really stared to come alive in volume 3, and volume 4 is even better. We get to meet more characters and vampires. We also get a bit of a mystery in this volume and learn a little more about vampire lore in this world. Nazuna and Ko remain socially awkward, a little bit creepy, perverted, and just downright funny. There wasn’t a lot of progression with the main storyline until the very end. And the information we learn leads to even more questions which I hope will be addressed in volume 5. Call Of The Night volume 4 had several smaller stories which I found to be engaging and fun. The vamp maid cafe was my hysterical. The art style isn’t my favorite (it’s the faces), but I’m getting used to it and it fits the characters. I’ll continue on with the series to see if Ko gets his wish to become a vampire. I give Call of The Night Volume 4, 4 gems! Happy Reading!

these are genuinely so mid. the story is loose and doesn't have a strong direction, the characters are fine but not identifiable or fun, and there are far too many sexual things for a 14-year-old protag. like, I know the age of consent is 16 in Japan but I'm so jaded, especially when you have a vampire decades older than the literal child she's flirting with. all the people are kind of terrible but not even in a way that inspires introspection with the challenging situations. instead you get a maid cafe plot about how hot vampires are. seki's arc was the most interesting so far but it ended early and while it'll surely be expanded on, they steam rolled through the psychologically interesting parts, and sped through to a solution without exploring any nuance. keep reading bc it's decent and I keep expecting it to....go somewhere? I've got higher hopes now that the detective is here but I'm still jaded.

These volumes have not been the best in my opinion, but they have been important for the plot. As the two main characters bond more, the plot becomes more complex and so do the characters. Every chapter is like a mini adventure and it is just so interesting to read. Like the simpsons series, every day is a new day for the two protagonists and I just put the books down. Like I said in my other review, I have been loving this series and I don’t think I will get bored of it anytime soon. I 100% recommend this book.

Menudo vicio.

I didn't care too much for the maid chapter, but I liked reading more of Ko's backstory, especially through Akira's perspective.

That detective is interesting, to say the least. At least now the plot is finally going somewhere, and I wonder if Mahiru is already a vampire or is considering it...or maybe he now knows he's being used (assuming he is being used) and he perhaps wants a way out? Why else would he contact that detective?

Not as much of Nazuna and cosplay in this volume as expected, but the read was not a waste either thanks to the thrills that occurred and a few new characters added to the story, and the last chapter looked like the human boy-and-vampire girl romance is about to go to another level. I look forward to seeing how things heat up in volume 5.

A chill read. Enjoyed revisting the maid cafe arc and when Ko and his friends investigate the school mysteries (having had initially seen them through the anime). Did notice a chapter in between that definitely was something that wasn't included in the anime; a fair break between the bigger story threads.

The story continues to develop past what I was originally expecting. It is a bit darker and more serious that I thought it would be. Im digging it so far. We meet a new detective character in this volume with the potential to really move things into an interesting area.

Best volume thus far in my opinion. The ending gave me a few of the things i wanted at the beginning of the story, letting us know it’s not all rainbows and sunshine in the night, and there’s more to these vampires.

I enjoyed this volume because a lot happened; I mean, not a lot always has to happen in one volume, but both parts had me invested and the next thing I know, I finished the entire volume. There's a maid café, a detective, and a mystery, what a fun volume.
