Romance Is Like That Too

Rate this book
The most anticipated sequel of the greatest love story ever told is here!

Seven months have gone by; Dave and Caroline are in love as much as ever. However, there's a new threat in town - a barber named Alp Hamale (best villain name in the world) and he wants Caroline bad because honestly, who wouldn't? She's hot, bro. Anyway, he's dead set on her being his but first he has to get Dave out of the picture. Male toxicity is like that. Don't count Dave out, though. He's been pumping iron and will do anything to make sure he's the only one who gets to see what Caroline looks like below her navel. With help from Mortimer and a better effort given by Cheddar this time, Alp Hamale has his work cut out for him. What our heroes don't know though is that this villain in particular is actually smart and not a complete idiot. Between his evil intellect and Mortimer's ability to create amazing plans, this will go down as the biggest battle in the history of romance sub-genres. Will Dave and Caroline's love endure or will Caroline open her legs, er, heart to another? Honestly, I'm sure you don't care as long as someone gets laid, because romance is like that too.

Did I mention Mortimer gets a girlfriend in this one? So hot.

After absolutely devouring the first book, I jumped straight into the second to keep the adventure rolling. Sequels so often fail to live up to the original, but thankfully, that wasn’t the case here. Our favourite couple are back, this time dealing with a brand-new adversary: Alp Hamale (a name that took me far longer to clock than I care to admit).

Cheddar is up to his usual questionable feline activities, Mortimer has himself a girlfriend, and for the most part, life is good. If only they could get rid of the new man Caroline wants hovering anywhere below her navel… and if only Dave could finally see a bear (the man just wants to see a bear, dammit).

One of the things I loved most was the constant breaking of the fourth wall (which happened in the first book, too). It feels like you’re being invited straight into the author’s mind; an interesting, hilarious, and occasionally slightly disturbing place to be.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable and worthy follow-up to the first masterpiece, and I had a great time with it from start to finish.

Unhinged in the BEST and Most Hilarious Way Too

Why did I do this? What did I subject my eye holes to? Will my braincase ever recover? Everyone knows the sequel is never as good as the original and is always a clear money grab. Lightning never strikes twice, right?

Wrong.

In this sequel, every character continues to think they are the main character, including the author himself. However, at its beautiful little core, it is still a love story between two best friends who struggle to keep things right as life, a lack of bears, and a sexy barber with his shady eyes on Caroline keep getting in the way.

The story is a satire that doesn't care about how you feel about your genre darlings and will eviscerate any feelings you may think you have. Be prepared for piscine porn, fourth wall obliteration, and an increasingly nihilistic narrator.

Many of our favorites from the first return, Mortimer, Cheddar, and everyone's favorite Tim the Bagel Boy.

Scorched. I have been struck again and died.

But also, that narrator is a judgy d!ck.

This sequel shouldn’t work, and yet it absolutely does. The absurdity is part of the charm. The character dynamics shine, the villain is actually interesting, and the humor is fearless. It’s refreshing to read something that doesn’t take itself seriously but is still crafted with intention.
