“I’d found a mate who made me want to be a better male and a better king, no matter how we came to be.”

💜 fated mates
✨ star crossed lovers
💜 fae prince x two quarters fae commoner
✨ he falls first
💜 trauma

I liked the book and I nearly finished it in a one setting. The new characters especially throne and Elria were such a good add. Not gonna lie there was a lot of miscommunication and I wanted to scream at them to just tell the truths to each other but over all the book was so sweet and the cliffhanger made me unable to wait for the 3rd book

Read this as an ARC - and it didn’t disappoint. If you want a slow burn, fantasy without confusing systems and back story, and a shadow wielding MMC this is the book for you.

I love that this book picked up right where book 1 left off. While Araya at times was delusional she eventually grew on me and Loren was the MMC we all love with the shadows, over protective and self deprecatation.

The slow burn did not disappoint. While there was sexy parts of this book - it wasn’t over the top but it also wasn’t closed door. Then dream with the shadows was done well. I personally like that that it wasn’t brought into real time (maybe book 3) and have shadow smut to have shadow smut.

The whole book I was trying to figure out who was going to betray them. I thkuhht for sure it was going to be Thorne and/or Eryn.

The ending with Kai switching sides - ugh I cant wait until book 3.

This author left me on read essentially! I knew this ending was going to be unsatisfactory! What I didn't see coming was the last 3 lines of the book, but I am happy about it!

I am not a slow-burn fan but seriously the tension in this one was perfect! I had the honor of arc reading both books in the series and I have to say this one is my favorite.

I loved seeing Araya come into herself and Loren stepping into the destiny Fate sat before him! His sister is one of my favorite side characters, I would love to see a spin off where we get her and Galen's story and see some of the things the fae endured during the time of Loren's enslavement.

Go read The Chained Prince and then come back to The Bound Mage. I am already foaming at the mouth for book 3!

This was everything! Wow! It's allways difficult to make the second book - because, how will it ever live up to the first one… Well NOT a problem for Becca Calder!

Starting right were we ended, and then things just got so freaking captivating! Definitely a romantasy series that will keep you glued to the pages. Tension, action, banter, open-door spice and oh so much logning!

I really like the character work and the storyline is such a great time!

Esay to read and easy to enjoy, specially if you like romantasy. And I will definitly be back….

Loved this sequel to The Chained Prince. Araya’s journey from the emotionally abused captive in the Chained Prince to the absolute legend that she beomes by the end of The Bound Mage is believable and heartbreaking and inspiring all at the same time. Well-written with excellent pacing and genuinely likeable characters. It’s clear that Becca’s storytelling skills are only going to get better as her career grows.

Book 2 of the Eldergreen Trilogy

The Bound Mage picks up where The Chained Prince left off, and while the first half repeats many of the same frustrations, the second half finally allows the story — and the romance — to breathe.

The opening chapters are engaging and promise meaningful progression, but as the story unfolds, Araya’s internal conflict becomes increasingly repetitive. Her resistance to the bond with Loren and her continued fixation on her past with Jaxon ultimately halts any emotional development, making the first half a challenging read.

However, once Araya begins to open herself to the bond she shares with Loren, the narrative noticeably shifts. From that point on, the pacing improves, the tension becomes more focused, and the romantic arc finally delivers a satisfying payoff. The intimate scenes are well written, emotionally charged, and feel earned after such a long buildup.

The final act, particularly from around the 80% mark, brings stronger plot movement, setting the stage for higher stakes and the final book. The epilogue introduces an intriguing twist that fuels more questions than answers for the next installment.

That said, while the story is now firmly set in Eluneth, the fae island beyond the Shadowed Veil, the worldbuilding remains somewhat surface-level. Political structures, beliefs, and fae culture are introduced but not deeply explored, which in my opinion limits the scope of Araya’s journey within this world.

Overall, The Bound Mage shows clear improvement over Book 1 — especially in its second half and romantic development — but character growth and worldbuilding depth still lag behind the story’s potential. I will still continue with the final book in the series to see how everything wraps up.

I received and ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump, but The Bound Mage by Becca Calder was the perfect book to dig me out of it.

We pick back up with Araya torn between her old life and the possibility of a new one with Loren. Araya is going through the mental gymnastics of wanting to go back to Jaxon, while also knowing that’s not a life she wants to live. But she’s also torn about her newly discovered bond with Loren and the fact that she’s never really made a choice for herself. We really get to see Araya grow, not just with her magical abilities, but as a person. She finally discovers what it is she wants and is willing to do whatever it takes to get it.

From the beginning Loren knew he wanted to accept the bond between him and Araya but he refused to make that decision for her. My heart broke for Loren watching him grapple with the fact that Araya may not choose him, and him forcing himself to be ok with that - going so far as to help her break the bond if necessary. Loren also does the work to overcome his past and attempt to gain control of his shadows. He stops at nothing to keep the people he cares about safe. Although he does make one questionable decision that changes his and Araya’s course that had me absolutely screaming because all of the red flags were there.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it had me on the edge of my seat at times, especially in the last few chapters. I’m excited to see how the little twist at the end plays out in the next book, and I truly hope Loren and Araya get their happily ever after.

Spoiler Free ARC Review, thank you BookSirens and Becca Calder for the opportunity to ARC read again.

After The Chained Prince, I was desperate for answers and more of this incredible world and book 2 did not disappoint.

The yearning, the character growth, and the incredible world building had me hooked once again from the beginning. I had to try and slow myself down so I could enjoy reading for longer because I didn't want it to end.

I loved seeing more of this world and the development of the magic system was incredible. I was captivated by Loren's journey with his power and how well his trauma was written. This is such an interesting take on shadow powers and I'm both excited and terrified to see what will happen in the next book with Jaxon in play. I think the idea of the amplifiers and the tattooed runes adds so much more dimension, it's really refreshing not to have every character be almost omnipotent.

I'm always a sucker for found family but Thorne and Veria made this book. They gave Araya so much space when she really needed it and I loved the relationship they developed.

I felt everything reading this book, especially the last few chapters. Heartbreak, happiness, devastation, unease, and more than anything feminine rage.

I need to stop reading this series as ARCs because not knowing what happens next is going to eat at me until the next book.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The Chained Prince was a perfect example of dark fantasy romance, and the sequel The Bound Mage didn't disappoint either... I highly recommend this to dark fantasy lovers as the plot is original, hooks you from the beginning and brims with heartaches that will leave you wanting for more!

The Bound Mage was more darker, deeper and complex than The Chained Prince. Becca had a compelling writing style as she had in the first book. There's a lot of trauma with undertone of themes that Becca unpacks in her books. Some of the characters had unexpected and delightful character arcs in this book, adding more depth to the well fleshed characters.

Some of my favourite quotes:
— "It could be what we all need to brighten our spirits or spark chaos".
— But should haves and could haves haunt us all.”
— “But a crown isn’t just a piece of metal. It’s a promise— and sometimes we’re forced to keep that promise, even when it hurts the people we love.”
— "Ours. But hers to choose."
— "These things happen as they are meant to, even when everything else is going wrong.”
— “Hope is a fickle beast. It can lift the spirits and rally the heart—but it can also blind us.”
— “He is mine. And I am his. You will not take him from me.”
— "No steel could cut down a shadow."

Disclaimer: Thanks Becca Calder for gifting me an ARC, all the opinions are that of my own and aren't influenced by any factors.

One word to start: OBSESSED. That’s how I feel about this series. In book two of the Eldergreen series, we see the aftermath of trauma and abuse with both our MCs, Loren and Araya. As they struggle to cope individually, their relationship hits roadblock after roadblock. It’s such a real and raw look at two broken and scarred individuals’ journey through the heartbreaking aftermath of a lifetime of trauma and abuse.

Though the story progresses slowly through this book, the pacing is exactly right. We wake up in a brand new world, so there is much to establish for the reader to really connect with the story. New characters, new stories, a new culture. So while it feels slow, it builds beautifully. Which leads to an almost excruciating slow-burn for our Loren and Araya. It didn’t feel rushed, and while a lot of the delay was Loren being stubborn and denying his own intuition, I truly loved that he consistently insisted Araya not be forced by passion or pressure.

I simply love this series. It is everything a fantasy romance should be and I cannot wait to continue reading it! I received this book as an advanced copy and am leaving this review with extreme gratitude and enthusiasm.

A great follow up to book 1!

Araya was taken to be freed. She didn’t ask Loren to save her but he did. She may be his mate, but she believes she needs to go back. To save everyone. Because she knows Jaxon will stop at nothing to get her back. But the mate bond tugs at them both. And the shadows are angry at both of them for denying it.

Araya is definitely infuriating at times but it goes with her character. She’s dealing with a type of ptsd and this strange feeling of knowing while she was treated terribly, she doesn’t want to fully accept it.

Loren may be our shadow daddy but at the same time, it’s a different take on shadows. The shadows are angry with Loren for not going to Araya. All they want is her. And they have a whole personality of their own. And I love it!

The ending was somewhat predictable but I’m super excited for book 3 with the addition to a new person to the team (yay!!!).

The spice was slow burn 🌶️ and a few brief scenes but the pay off was still worth it. I can only imagine what next book may bring us now that the shadows are under his control 😜🥵

I can’t wait for book 3!!!!

The Bound Mage is a slow-burn fantasy that builds tension with every chapter. The journey is emotional, unpredictable, and packed with “did that really just happen?” twists that keep the story gripping from start to finish. The world feels rich, the characters are compelling, and the plot never takes the easy path.

The author knows how to build suspense without rushing the emotional beats. Every reveal lands with impact, and the twists are the kind that make you pause, blink at the page, and question everything you thought you understood. It’s layered, unpredictable, and surprisingly emotional in all the right places.

And the ending? It doesn’t just open a door for the next installment — it practically demands it. A bold, gripping final stretch that guarantees readers will be reaching for Book 3 the second it drops.

If you love slow-burn tension, twisty plot lines, and fantasy stories that keep you second-guessing your theories right until the final page, this one definitely belongs on your TBR.

The chained prince and the bound mage - what a pair! They went through so much pain and suffering, and their relationship has so many layers - so many white lies to divide them and so many dark truths to unite them!
If it was just a matter of choice, or even just a matter of fate, maybe they would have found a way to overcome the odds, but there is so much depending on others.
In the end, they soar on wings of love and a fleeting hapiness, just to crash and burn in a pit of betrayal and a swamp of doubt. None of their victories are without grief, and none of their defeats are without hope.

Well written, evenly paced, steeped in emotions and loaded with unexpected twists in a credible plot, with complex characters and dark atmosphere (and yes, the shadows are a character), this book has left me eagerly waiting for the next book in the series.

Completely enthralled with this 2nd book in the series, which picks up right where the Chained Prince left off.

Loren oh Loren, he is the king of self loathing. After suffering so long, the guilt he feels at forcing the mate bond is completely all encompassing. He quite literally would do anything for Araya, even at his own detriment.

Araya has a tough time deciding between everything she’s ever been taught and these new found feelings she is developing for Loren. It was a delicious slow burn, but oh my those spicy moments are simply delish!

The plot continues to twist and turn, full of new characters who I found completely endearing. But that ending wow, I can’t wait for the next one.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy for which I give my honest review. Really looking forward to seeing what comes next!

This book picks up where we left off at the end of book 1. Our main characters are not dealing well with being free from captivity. Araya is still slightly delulu, stubborn AF and mad that she was freed from New Dominion. Loren is upset with himself for many reasons and continues to keep secrets. There is so much yearning from him for Araya despite everything but these 2 are chaos. They might be out of chains physically but definitely are not free mentally. It makes it hard for them to communicate and really see each other, especially since they are each blinded by their own individual pain, which leads to a lot of clashing. I loved how focused this part of their story was on each of them healing. It is a total game changer when they finally get there together and individually. I loved reading it. I can't wait to read the next book especially after that super mean ending.

Now this is how you do a 2nd book!!
We continue straight from book 1, navigating Araya's feelings, Lorne's struggle to help in the right way & everything in between. This book is a slow burn in the best way, the tension throughout!!

There are shadows with a bit of a controlling personality which we can forgive due to their cute little mini shadows, always there to protect Araya.

Loved the side characters, Galen and El! I would love to read about their bond!! Thorne is just an absolute gentleman & I am excited for more Serafina in book 3!

The ending though... I mean it's not as if Becca didn't warn us "I just hope you're not too mad at me when you finish this one..." It had to happen this way but why?! Loved the little twist right at the end.

I cannot wait for book 3! I have a feeling we are going to see an awesome team up and I am ready for that!

5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed the Bound Mage, it took me a little longer to get into than the chained prince but I do think the slower pace was necessary for us to understand the politics of the fae kingdom and how it differs from the New Dominion. I also liked that Becca Calder gave Loren and Araya time to develop their relationship.

The second half of the book is where this really shines though. We all know that Araya will face horrors if she returns to Jaxon but there is always the feeling that a reunion with him is inevitable and when it happens it’s as dreadful as expected.

This a pretty dark read but there are lighter moments, like Loren’s shadow that acts like a cat and the heartfelt reunion with Eilwen.

This is such an addictive series and I’m already looking forward to the next instalment.

The Bound Mage is better than book 1!!! I absolutely love when a sequel meets the challenge of an already amazing book and then rises past it!

The Bound Mage is full of SO much emotional turmoil, yearning (Loren wins the top award for yearning), and anticipation.

We get to learn so much more about the magic system in this world and layer it on with some Court intrigue.

The author did a really great job of laying crumbs throughout the story, guiding the reader to kind of know what's going to happen at the end of the book but with a banger of a twist at how exactly we get there.

This is such a solid series, and I can't wait until the third installment is released!

overall: highly recommend

“The Bound Mage,” by Becca Calder

I was so excited to see book 2 come out of The Eldergreen Series! I loved how political and dark the first book was and the entire ending with the shadows and all. This book did not disappoint at all where the first one left off! I loved to learn more about the MC which was so mysterious in the first book. I loved how the tension played out with both the main characters. The plot was so interesting and kept me glued to the pages. I would literally die for these characters!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars, so much love to the story.

-Fated Mates

I stumbled upon this author when I read her first book, The Chained Prince. That book introduced me to this world and I have loved every step of the journey. Now, with the second installment, I love her work even more.

Once again , the characters in the world that were developed in this book was amazing. I absolutely loved the slow burn aspect of this book. Araya and Loren were phenomenal characters. Araya's evolution through these books just captivated me all the way down to my soul. Her growth was amazing to be a part of.

The ending was so poetic and well written and I just want more. Becca Calder is one of those authors that I never knew I needed so much in my life. These books are definitely something that should be added to your list.

The world building is fantastic & I feel like I can really imagine the places & the people. Her descriptions are brilliant. There were quite a few oh my gosh moments for me in this & I also had an I knew it moment but I won't spoil what it was for! ARC REVIEW

Araya just wants to go home to her life, but the strange connection between her and Prince Loren is too strong to ignore. Araya is torn between the human mage she left behind and her fated mate. She wants to return to the New Dominion to the life that she knows. But at the same time, she doesn't.

Slow burn, a prince who controls shadows, and a cliffhanger ending. Araya is one of the strongest FMCs that I know. She went through so much, but she managed to survive. Loren, this shadow master fae prince is patient and helpful. Loren's sister and her mate. I loved their relationship.

The Bound Mage is book two in The Eldergreen Trilogy.

ARC Review:

This a story steeped in political drama, heartbreak and magical lore. Fae and humans are at war for control of Fae magic. The Shadowed Veil is taking fae and humans alike, who venture too close to the borders.

This was such a good story. The attention to detail with world building, character development and mental health representation was incredible. Araya has an incredible character arc and Loren’s story is heartbreaking and full of all the emotions. The cliffhanger on this book was stressful and I need book 3 stat!

I devoured this book! It was an incredible, and heartbreaking, portrayal of what Araya went through and her healing. After going through what she did, she wouldn't be able to heal over time.

Loren finally got his shit together and we are all feral for a Shadow Daddy and "she's my mate" vibes.

Both Araya and Loren's healing was written so well in this book.

The twists in this book were so good! I could guess a few of them, but they didn't feel blatantly obvious.

I am here for book 3 and Loren savagely getting his mate back because Jaxon is THE WORST.

OH my gods. I know Becca Calder warned us at the beginning of the book but DAMN, son. The way I hit that 80% and then became utterly enraged that book three isn’t out. 😂 The Bound Mage is so, so good. I absolutely loved watching Araya come into her own away from Jaxon. And the respect that Loren strived for her autonomy? Top tier. Guh, I cannot wait to learn what happens next!
