After Leo and Jasper are summoned to the reading of a last will and testament for a woman they do not know, they are stunned to receive not only a joint bequest, but also a bidding from the to find out if the woman’s young son fell to his death a dozen years ago…or if he was, as she always suspected, pushed.
Faced with hostility from the grieving family, Leo and Jasper launch an unusual investigation, placing the morgue assistant and the detective inspector on equal footing for the first time. It’s a thrilling change after their budding relationship had been on pause for months while Jasper handled a case in Liverpool. But when a new murder complicates things, and Leo takes on a separate private inquiry, they discover working together is more challenging than either of them anticipated.
As Leo and Jasper untangle a web of family secrets, they unearth a vile truth connecting two deaths, separated by a decade—a truth the killer will stop at nothing to bury, once and for all.
Tears for the Forsaken is the fifth book in Cara Devlin’s romantic historical mystery series set in Victorian London. The Spencer & Reid Mysteries are perfect for fans of Miss Scarlet & the Duke, and readers of Irina Shapiro, Andrea Penrose, and C.S. Harris.
Cara is an author, reader, and history lover. She reads and writes across genres, but her heart is reserved for romantic historical fiction and mystery. Her Bow Street Duchess books are fast-paced historical mysteries featuring a slow-burn romance taking place in Regency London. The series begins with Murder at the Seven Dials. Cara lives in rural New England with her family, where she is at work on her next series, the Spencer & Reid Mysteries.
As you may know I am more generous of my ratings in a slump but as this kept my attention, I’ll give it better marks. The mystery was quite convoluted with many dead bodies that I can’t say more about but was fun enough. My one note was that Jasper and Leo spent very very little time investigating together, which has always been the charm of these books, so that was a bit lacking.
This story was a bit of an edge book, a book meant to keep the reader on the hook without really advancing the overarching series mystery or the relationship between the protagonists very much, but I’m ok with that as I think some of the choices here are leading to something that I just don’t know yet. The authors gets the benefit of the doubt from me for now 😂.
This continues to be a great series but I’m hoping the next book starts clearing things up and really advancing their relationship. It’s hard to write a tight series that spans seven or more books, it’s inevitable if the plan is to make it that long several of the centre books will be somewhat lacking.
Thanks to the author for the advanced copy, I did really enjoy this.

Woohooooo! I’ve been waiting for this, it seems like forever (it hasn’t been, I’m just impatient) and the arc came in!
The book started out strong. A will is being read, Spencer and Reid are left a home in a wealthy neighborhood with a mystery that must be solved! With such a strong start and a declaring of feelings I thought I was in for a great read. What happened was the plot slowed to a crawl, and I kept putting the book down and doing something else (this is never a good sign). At about the 30%-mark events were unfolding and a lot of information was being given, and the parts were starting to fall into place. A side mystery was added (I think if this was more fleshed out in the first half, I would have been more invested) that Leo is investigating. Clues are discovered the motives for the bad guys are explained and the mysteries are solved. I rate it with my 3.5* as I found it to be an average read.
I’m torn. I devoured this book, so it wouldn’t be fair to rate it less than four stars, but… it was not my favorite in the series.
Jasper and Leo are entrusted with solving a mystery from years before. The case was ruled an accident, but it seems another investigation is in order after all, because people start getting murdered…
I loved seeing Jasper and Leo together, and the progress in their relationship warms my heart, but I didn’t enjoy the murder mystery as much as in the previous books. It was so convoluted that I had no idea what to think for most of the story. I had theories along the way, and I was close, but there was just too much going on, and I didn’t really figure it all out. The ending was anticlimactic too, and I’m a little disappointed.
That said, I’m excited for the next installment, because Leo and Jasper are everything, and I need to know what happens next!
Thanks to the author for the arc, all opinions are my own.
Expected 10 Jan 26

Yaaay, my arc is here! 🎉 I’ll be spending my Christmas this year in a Victorian morgue. I’ll also be eating cookies, I’m not a total creep. Can’t wait! 😃🎄☠️
Leo and Jasper are summoned to the reading of a dead woman’s will. They are stunned that the woman left them a joint bequest and a request to find out if her son’s death a decade ago was really an accident.
The case puts them on an equal footing until Leo privately investigates another murder. The danger mounts again, putting both their lives at risk.
The story comes in Leo and Jasper’s third-person POVs.
My Thoughts
The fifth book in the series doesn’t exactly work as a standalone, though there is enough backstory provided if you want to give it a go.
There are two cases in this book, though the second one doesn’t get a lot of space. It is still important, considering everything.
The romance is still a slow burn, but it suits the series and the characters. No complaints since the drama has been resolved as much as possible.
The main mystery is interesting enough. I guessed the culprit (it is easy if you are used to the genre and spot the clues) and liked that I was right.
I don’t want to say much as the book is best enjoyed without spoilers. However, I will say that the lead couple makes a good detective pair (though they don’t work together much in this one).
Unlike the previous books, the end is not a cliffhanger. This might make it a bit mellow, but it is right for the characters. They deserve this little good time before the next book (which is supposed to be the finale).
That said, I do wish the main mystery’s conclusion was a bit more detailed. I would have liked to read that one scene instead of being summarized in a paragraph. Call me petty, but that man had to face some truths!
To summarize, Tears for the Forsaken is a great continuation of the series and keeps the momentum going. I can’t wait for the next book, ready to be released in April 2026.
My thanks to the author for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
Once again we’re catapulted into murder and mayhem with Leonora Spencer and Detective Inspector Jasper Reid.
Jasper is wrapping up a counterfeiting case he’s been conducting in Liverpool. In the midst of all this he and Leo have been asked to attend the reading of the will of a Mrs. Francine Stroud, at Cowper Hall, home to the Viscount Cowper—definitely not a friend. Both are equally startled to find they’ve been left a property in Craven Hill, a stylish address, and a request to investigate the death of Francine’s son, Theodore, over twelve years ago. It’s not long before bodies begin to pile up. One is a woman who turns out to have once been engaged to coroner Connor Quinn. Not only that, Leo’s seperate pursuit of the death of Quinn’s ex fiancé opens up some dangerous trails. Once more Eddie Bloom, a vicious gangster, has Leo in his sights. Jasper and Leo quarrel, even as they move closer to each other. The situation is turbulent. Another exciting episode in the Spencer and Reid adventures
I'm really liking this series! My feeling is that both Leo and Jasper are evolving as characters. Their relationship is also evolving and they approach challenges with better communication and understanding of each other. So, despite we can say it's "slow burn", I don't feel that they're "stuck" due to some non-sense. Regarding the actual mystery... there are two mysteries! The main one was more detailed but, without spoiling anything, the other one also helped with what I was mentioning about "understanding each other". I do recommend this series for anyone who likes this genre! I received an ARC and the comments are my own.
I love this series so much! I devoured it in a day. I found this more of a filler and I am waiting for the next book to see if it answers questions and moves the plot along for Leo and Jasper. There was some lovely moments of them together and maybe brings them to more of an understanding. I found the ending lovely as well. Let’s see what the next one brings which I cannot wait for.
I guessed the who and the why (almost) from the beginning. But still a good read. I am wondering how Leo and Jasper's relationship would work though now that they have made it public - from multiple povs.
Thanks to the author for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.
For some reason, there are certain books I treat like I do truffles - since sweets are generally verboten to me now, I have a tendency to put one aside as a future treat that I look at and savour the idea of before I actually delve into, and it is my ultimate reward for getting other things done and when I finally do bite into it, I do so sloooooooowly and savour it, and mourn the idea that the moment will end.
This series is my mind truffle, and I savoured it long after I finished it, and like the next dark, decadent, rich treat, look forward to the next. This is my long and convoluted way of saying I absolutely love the evolving dynamic and relationship of Leo and Jasper, both personal and professional.
After the angst and past drama, and the trauma of truths being revealed in previous stories, Leo and Jasper have come to a personal accord and exploring a new and brewing romance, and it is tentative, sweet, and lovely. But being who they are and what they are, it is not all sunshine, roses, and rainbow unicorns. Jasper has sent away for the large part because of an out of town investigation, and he and Leo are back together again briefly because of truly unexpected circumstances. They are called to the reading of the will of someone related to their past mentor, and are embroiled in a mystery of the death of a child in the past that may not have been an accident. That becomes further entangled when what becomes an investigation into the past becomes embroiled with a new murder in the home they have inherited together.
Jasper stays to investigate these new circumstances, and despite their improving accord, still does not want Leo actively involved in investigations. Not just out of worry for her safety, as she lacks experience and tends to be headstrong. But Leo finds herself in the middle of separate mystery when one of the new cases that come through her morgue is the dead former fiancee of the new coroner, and has an unexpected connection to Leo. This shakes him up greatly and when her untimely death is not followed up on by the police, Leo takes it upon herself to try to get some answers for him.
I love the evolving relationship of Jasper and Leo, and there is still much of their very rich story to tell, because there are still unresolved mysteries about their personal pasts to be explored that will impact their present and future. But the mysteries they are involved in in thist story were told in a very compelling and fresh fashion, and I also enjoy their dynamic with their past and the secondary characters, including Leo's family and friend Dita, and Jasper with his housekeeper, and their various colleagues.
Keep at it Cara Devlin - I loved the Bow Street Duchess series and hated seeing it end. But I am loving Spencer & Reid as well.
Leo and Jasper inherit a house, a glass vial and a murder to solve from twelve years ago. Secrets have a way of coming out when investigating murder. Fear of discovery puts more people in danger and suddenly there's another murder. Even though Leo and Jasper want to move forward in their personal relationship, who they are individually may make it very difficult. Another gripping Victorian murder mystery in the series. These books need to be read in order. Includes some low-key descriptive information on dead bodies at the scene of a crime or an autopsy.
Leonora and Reid are summoned to a reading of a will, that of Mrs Francise Stroud. Much to the annoyance of her family they are left a house in a wealthy area and a request to investigate the death if her 10 year old son Theodore, who died 12 years ago. Complications arise and a murder occurs. Just the first. An entertaining and well-written historical mystery with its likeable main characters. Another good addition to this enjoyable series
Another fast moving Spencer & Reid Mystery. Devlin keeps two plots moving separately at just the right speed and unveiling of clues to keep it interesting. Love that she is taking time with the complicated relationship between Leo and Jasper and giving it time to mature. Really looking forward to the next book in this series. Well done.
Irresistible! I received my ARC a few days ago, so I put the series I was reading on hold to read Tears for the Forsaken. I can’t resist a new Cara Devlin book, particularly a Spencer & Reid mystery. How hard it was to put it down to go to work! I read on as I was dying to find out what would happen next. One story, two mysteries, plus the plot involving Leo and Jasper, their relationship, their shared past – how can you resist that? I couldn’t. I had such a great time reading this book that I can't wait for the next one, with a promising title: Hazard of the Pursuit.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Tears For the Forsaken is the fifth book in the Spencer & Reid Mystery series by Cara Devlin. This is an engrossing jaunt into Victorian London, masterfully blending rich historical detailing, intrigue, intricate crime-solving, and a subtle, slow-burn simmering romance. At the heart of the stories are Leonora "Leo" Spencer and Detective Inspector Jasper Reid, whose dynamic is richly layered. Leo is a fiercely intelligent, observant, and unconventional young woman working in a London morgue (which definitely defies the gender norms of the 1880s), while exhibiting a remarkable photographic memory that fuels her sleuthing abilities. Jasper Reid, freshly promoted at Scotland Yard, embodies both the haunted past of a man rising from the East End and the tension of romantic restraint, creating a push-pull dynamic with Leo that feels very authentic. Their slow-burn relationship punctuates the mysteries without overshadowing the storylines, forming a subtle emotional backbone to the plots. I became a huge a fan of Ms. Devlin’s writing with her ‘Murder At the Seven Dials’ series, so I was excited to dive into this new series as soon as the first book released, following along on all Leo and Jasper’s many adventures, and snapping up each new instalment as they release. I went to write a review for her latest instalment, and noticed that I hadn’t left a review for any of the previous books, so I am rectifying that right now. As I have come to expect, Ms. Devlin’s mysteries are woven with plenty of twists and turns, an occasional red herring, while often dragging the MCs through a series of lethal and at times, morally ambiguous situations. From a theft tied to murders in the morgue to the high-stakes poisoning, plenty of gang intrigue, layered conspiracies involving long-buried secrets, and plenty more - each book maintains a gripping pace. Cara Devlin’s plots are meticulously detailed with rich settings, intricate clue structures, and unpredictably thrilling developments. Her historical accuracy, paired with her wonderfully creative imagination, offers a vivid depiction of Victorian London’s social scene, the criminal underworld of the times, as well as the professional policing during the 1800’s – elevating our reading experience with her moody atmosphere and palpable tension. I highly suggest following the series from the very beginning, reading each instalment in sequential order, so as to full appreciate not only the fantastic character development but the overarching mysteries that build across the installments as well. I recommend The Spencer & Reid Mysteries to fans of historical mysteries, Victorian-era detective stories, suspenseful plotting, meticulous history, and compelling lead characters, as this series offers both thrilling mysteries and satisfying emotional threads. Happy Reading…
Tears for the Forsaken by Cara Devlin Spencer & Reid #5
~ Another excellent addition to a fascinating historical mystery series ~ Thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading what comes next ~
What I liked: * Leonora “Leo” Spencer: difficult backstory, orphaned at nine, lost parents and two siblings, taken in by Uncle Claude and Aunt Flora Feldman, morgue assistant to Connor Quinn, photographic memory, bright, unconventional, puzzle solver, strong, not easily cowed, survivor, in a relationship with Jasper * Jasper Reid: Detective Inspector, adopted by Chief Superintendent Gregory Reid when young, from the streets, an orphan, bright, educated, intelligent, intriguing, away from London on a case for a few months, officially courting Leo at the end of this book * The reading of the will and what transpired afterward * The Opium issue that cropped up and how it played into the story * The plot, pacing, setting, and writing * That the story feels “of the era” and educates while entertaining * Dita Brooks: Leo’s friend, lost her fiancé in a previous book, working undercover, Might be ready to move on with a potential suitor – Connor from the morgue * Connor Quinn: Coroner, works with Leo, had a previous fiancé show up in the morgue, works to find out how she died, sees Dita and is immediately attracted to her * That all of the mysteries were solved and murderers found by the end of the book * The hopeful ending
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like, * How twisted the Stroud, Cowper, Dalton family dynamics were * Thinking about how difficult it would be to marry other than for love and even if for love to be expected to change to meet the expectations of the partner’s professional advancement
Did I like this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Definitely
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
Leo and Jasper are summoned to a reading of a will for someone neither one of them have met! Mrs Francine Stroud have left them something in her will that is amazing and certainly didn’t make the other family members happy at all! They later find Mrs Francine had ties to Gregory Reid and it was exactly what they thought it was! When there is a separate letter requesting Jasper and Leo find out what happened to her son who was pushed off a rooftop for no apparent reason! When their first visit to the home shows a murder victim from the home where the will was read it raises more questions than answers! The neighborhood is Posh and well respected! Jasper has to finish another investigation he is finally wrapping up after months of separation! Jasper is persuaded to assist Leo initially when the first victim appears in their new property after the reading of the will! She was also pregnant so the villain took two lives! As always nothing is a clear path and alarming things don’t add up and appear unconnected! A strange woman appears in the morgue and she has a connection to Claude! The deceased also has a connection to Leo’s friend Dita who is working at the Posh Gleason Department store on a mystery of her own involving the owners! There are many puzzles and the closer they get to the killer the more questions they have! When Leo’s incredible memory starts to help with connecting the dots the killer is also alerted! Can Jasper catch the killer in time? Will this also prompt Leo with an official yes to courtship!? You will turn this pages incredibly fast on this one! Bravo I love the Romance and mystery combo! I received an ARC copy for my unbiased review!
I always anticipate new drops in this series so it was especially exciting to get an early arc (thanks to Ms. Devlin) near the holidays. Merry Christmas to me!
As this book opens Leo and Jasper have been separated for several months due to Jasper being assigned to a case that takes him to another jurisdiction. They reunite when they are both mysteriously summoned for the reading of a will that renders two big surprises for them…one involving a bequeathment and the other a request for the investigation into a death twelve years before. There’s also another startling murder that Leo takes on alone to aid a friend with closure.
I enjoy this series for many reasons. Excellent and exciting plots, interesting and engaging characters, the development of the romantic relationship just to name a few. I also liked seeing the growth of both Jasper and Leo as she fought to have him recognize her as a capable and self-confident investigator in her own right. Jasper has a tendency to protect, and it was nice to see him pull back a little on that and let her shine independently. I love Leo’s intelligence and scrappiness, and it was on full display here.
This particular book was also noteworthy for the endearing and tentative exploration of a fairly new romance added in with a long friendship. Leo and Jasper are so well-written as two people who long for more but are also a bit shy of making a misstep. It’s sweet to watch as they begin navigating and deepening their feelings for each other.
Excellent series in every way and looking forward to the next installment coming in April.
Again, many thanks to Ms. Devlin for providing the free early arc for review.
The series never disappoints! This installment is just as well written, fast-paced and unpredictable as the previous ones, brimming with secrets, action, suspense, danger, potential suspects and complex dynamics. The personal relationship between Leo and Jasper progresses further and reaches a new level, and I am already excited to see how this likable investigative duo will fare despite all the dangers and obstacles. This story can theoretically be read as a standalone novel, but I recommend reading the series in order to understand the backstories of the two protagonists.
After months of separation, Jasper being on secondment in Liverpool, Leonora Spencer and DI Jasper Reid meet again when they are invited to the reading of the will of Mrs Stroud, the sister-in-law of their late foster father. Surprisingly, and much to the displeasure of her family, the woman bequeaths them a house in London. In return, the two are asked to find out what really happened to her son, who died in an accident over a decade ago. At the time, Mrs Stroud suspected her own daughter Helen of being involved. As they begin their investigation and explore their new property, they come across Helen‘s body. While Jasper sets out to find the killer, Leo investigates the murder of a young woman who worked undercover in a department store and who was the ex-fiancée of her new boss at the morgue, Connor Quinn…
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys gripping Victorian crime mysteries mixed with a slow-burn romance.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Leo Spencer and Jasper Reid, to their surprise, are summoned to the reading of a last will and testament for a woman they do not know, they are stunned to receive not only a joint bequest, but also a bidding from the grave: to investigate what actually happened to the woman’s young son who fell to his death a dozen years ago. It’s a thrilling change after their budding relationship had been on pause for months while Jasper handled a case in Liverpool. But when a new murder complicates things, and Leo takes on a separate private inquiry, they discover working together is more challenging than either of them anticipated. The fifth book in the series & whilst it could be read on its own when a series is this good I’d recommend reading in order. I love both Jasper & Leo they work so well together but it’s the chemistry between them & how their relationship had grown & deepened that’s so well done, yes it’s a very slow burn romance which feels so right. I also love the cases they investigate, Jasper treats Leo as an equal & always asks her opinion & trades thoughts. Leo has a photographic memory which is a boon but also can be dangerous for her. The cases are intriguing & I was left guessing as to who the villains were. A very well written murder mystery, wonderful characters & a well paced story drew me in from the start & I found it very hard to put down I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
As always, I waited impatiently for the new Spencer and Reid book Tears for the Forsaken. However, after reading the blurb about it on Goodreads, I was concerned that I might not like it as well. Jasper had been on an out-of-town assignment, and they had not seen each other in four months. I became even more concerned when I read that they would be working on separate investigations. My concern was all for naught, as the quality of the time they spent together more than made up for any lack in quantity. Along with that, the mystery was complex and became even more so when they realized that the two investigations were tied together. The complexity of the mystery more than held my attention.
The tension that comes with an investigation was acerbated by the fact that both Leo and Jasper were tied to the case on a personal level. A recently deceased woman left both a bequest and an assignment. Although this should have brought more clarity to the case, it actually brought more confusion, because neither of them had knowledge of the deceased. But they worked together to untangle all the assorted people and situations, which led straight to the killer. The killer’s identity was a bit of a surprise, but I was pleased with the resolution.
The best part for me was that Leo and Jasper’s relationship has grown to the point that there were some really intense interactions between them that left me beyond impatient for more. Taken all together Tears for the Forsaken is an excellent book and, for me, one of Cara’s best.
Another amazing book from Cara! With multiple murders and two separate cases, reading this book really hones your deductive abilities! (I did figure out the one crime before Leo though, thanks to Cara’s great clues!) I like how Jasper comes to respect and admire Leo more in this book as he sees that she can indeed solve a case without him. He also notes that he misses her when she’s not helping him with his investigation. When she is abducted, he displays his heart by “fighting the paralyzing fear of losing her.” For her part, Leo learns that it’s probably not wise to undergo dangerous parts of the investigation by herself. She also notices that the warnings she issues to Dita remind her of Jasper’s warnings to her! It seems that everyone is growing in this book while still remaining true to themselves. My favorite part of the book was when Jasper and Leo’s relationship is perfectly captured in the kiss at Cowper Hall-loved it! Later in the book, despite Jasper expressing concern over how Leo’s unconventional actions and career choices clash with how the Yard expects an investigator’s wife to behave, he affirms that he loves her exactly as she is and won’t require her to change (not that she would). In this book, Jasper learns things he didn’t know about his “father,” Gregory Reid. In future books, I’m excited to see if the Carters or Eddie Bloom show up more and to possibly learn what exactly Leo’s dad did to betray the Carters.
In the same way that the mysterious situations and deaths were escalating, Leo and Jasper's relationship seemed to progress, albeit a little slowly, in my opinion. It was very difficult for Jasper to accept that Leo was becoming more involved by her own, in situations that were clearly dangerous, not only for a woman but for anyone. I think he's considering alternatives, but... which ones? I like how Leo uses her memory power, but I find it worrying that more people were knowing about it. The author keeps me in constant suspense with the warnings Leo keeps receiving and Jasper's situation, which could explode at any moment. How intriguing everything is in this story; I enjoyed every moment, waiting for a new surprise. I find interesting and intriguing that there's apparently still much to discover about Leo and Jasper. I really like this couple, both with strong and inquisitive minds, and I'm entertained by their deductions and the conclusions they reach. I think Leo and Jasper still have work to do on their relationship, and there's still the danger that looms over Jasper and the mystery of the Spencer family, so we'll have to wait a while. I love historical romances with plenty of intrigue, mystery, suspense, and romance, and this story just keeps getting better.
“Tears for the Forsaken” is the fifth installment in the Spencer and Reid series by Cara Devlin. It could be read as a standalone since Devlin fills in the reader on major developments from previous stories, but is much better read as part of the series.
In this episode, Leo and Jasper are summoned to the reading of the will of a woman neither of them knows personally. There, they are jointly given a bequest and tasked with solving a 12 year old mystery. In the meantime, Leo has taken on a case of her own when the body of her boss’s former fiance ends up in the morgue.
This series is just delightful. Each story is a fast-paced read that hooks you from the first page. The characters are well-drawn and their interactions have authenticity. I appreciate that Leo’s friend Dita is back and that Connor (Leo’s boss) is growing into himself as a supporting character. Pick up the entire series for an entertaining read!
This book is great for readers who enjoy Victorian Mystery series and slow-burn romance.
I received an advance review copy for free from Cara Devlin via BookFunnel, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I received an advance copy with the understanding that I would give an honest review. Leo and Jasper are asked to attend a reading of a will of a person they had never met, but was tight with their beloved Inspector. They are given a house with the request to discover who killed the son, 10 years earlier. Turns out that the woman who has died was the sister to the Inspectors late wife. Now Jasper and Leo not only have to figure out, who killed the boy and why, but avoid a nasty family who never forgave the Inspector for his wife and children dying. And in the process figure out where they stand in their relationship - FINALLY. I admit I didn't see the ending coming, even though I had my suspensions'. It was a fairly quick read and an enjoyable one. I would recommend it to anyone who likes historical mysteries. The Bow Street Duchess is another series of Cara's that I would also recommend. I will be honest, I wasn't sure if I was going to like Leo, but she has grown on me.
Title: What role can a tear catcher possibly play in a murder mystery?
Setting: October 1884 This 5th volume in the Spencer & Reid series, keeps the reader on their toes, trying to catch up with a murderer. This time there is not one murder, but several that Leo and Jasper have to solve. Although starting out with a “dark and stormy night” setting, the book is hardly a cookie-cutter ‘the butler did it’ -type of story. Instead of becoming clearer as to the perpetrator as the story unfolds, he/she becomes more murky as the murder list grows, creating a complex story that is engrossing! The personal relationship between Leonora Spencer and Detective Inspector Jasper Reid (born James Carter) also makes progress, but they have not yet reached their HEA, but it does seem closer to happening by the end of the story. Overall, this is another multi-layered story that keeps the reader engaged to the end.
Our intrepid lovers, Jasper and Leo, are called to the home of Viscount Cowper, the vindictive bereaved father-in-law of Jasper’s foster father. Surprising everyone, they are left a London mansion as a bequest from his sister, with the stipulation that they investigate the death of her son, over 10 years ago. Multiple crimes are taking place at the same time, stretching the sleuths thin. And when Leo’s boss’ former fiancée winds up on the autopsy table, another enemy rears his head. This was quite an engaging book, with several different locations and red herrings. And finally—finally…we see romance and the possibility of a future for our two detectives! I received the ARC of this book from the author at no charge, but all opinions are my own.
