ARC Review
🙆🏾‍♀️I seriously feel like I got the hottest ticket in town being able to review Faeling before it drops on August 24th. Thank you, Sarah!

🦄 The Dreadmount Steeds Deserve Their Own Spin-Off

Let’s start with the real scene stealers: the dreadmount unicorns. These majestic, terrifying, emotionally intelligent creatures are not your average sparkle ponies. They’re warhorses with attitude, loyalty, and enough personality to warrant their own trilogy. Honestly, Oberon alone could run a kingdom and still have time to judge your life choices with a single snort.

They’re not just mounts they’re Ravenna’s family, her protectors, her emotional support murder beasts. Every time they appear, the story levels up. If Wendel ever writes Dreadmount Diaries, I will preorder it, annotate it, and probably knit a unicorn-themed bookmark in its honor. (I don't knit but I WILL learn!😂)

🥀 Ravenna: Grief, Vengeance, and Loneliness

Ravenna is not okay and that’s what makes her so compelling. She’s grieving. She’s angry. She’s been alone for most of her life, with only her dreadmounts to lean on. Her mask isn’t just armor it’s a wall between her and a world that’s never felt safe.

She’s out for revenge, but underneath the rage is an ache for any sort of real connection. She doesn’t want to drag anyone into her drama, especially not Vallek. But loneliness doesn’t make her weak it makes her real. And watching her slowly open up, even as she’s seemingly burning bridges and battling demons, real and dreamt? It’s devastating and beautiful.

🪓 Vallek: Axe-Wielding Loyal King

Vallek is the kind of hero who doesn’t just fight for love he chooses it, over and over, even when it’s messy, inconvenient, and politically disastrous. He sees Ravenna’s grief, her rage, her mask and he still says, I’m in. His people don’t trust her. His best friend side-eyes her. But Vallek? He’s already sharpening Hornhim and asking where the battle is.

He’s not just loyal to Ravenna he’s loyal to his family, his kingdom, his values, and the idea that love doesn’t have to be easy to be worth it. He’s the emotional rock in a world of chaos, and honestly? He deserves a medal, a vacation, and maybe a therapy unicorn.

💘 Their Love Story

This isn’t a fairy tale, it's more like a war-torn, grief-soaked, politically fraught romance that hurts in all the right ways. Ravenna doesn’t think she’s worthy. Vallek thinks she’s everything. They fight, they bleed, they doubt and still, they choose each other.

It’s not soft. It’s not simple. But it’s earned. And watching them learn to trust, to lean, to love despite everything? It’s the kind of emotional payoff that makes you want to reread the whole book just to feel it again

OH! Just a small note, while Faeling can be read as a standalone, let’s be real: the cameos from Alarion, Molly, and a few other familiar faces (who shall remain gloriously unnamed) are like secret handshakes for longtime super fans. The way previous friends are woven into the tangles of this new story... babes , it’s like watching your favorite characters walk back on stage with new scars and bigger stakes.

🖤 Final Thoughts: Read This Book or Regret Everything, 😩😂

Faeling is not just a fantasy it’s a fullbody experience. It’s grief and magic and battle axes and unicorns that could emotionally wreck you with a single head tilt. It’s about choosing love when it’s hard, choosing loyalty when it’s unpopular, and choosing yourself even when the world says “don’t.”

If you’re not reading this book, I don’t know what to tell you. Go forth. Get wrecked. And then come scream about it with me in the comments.

PS...
Here are the tropes........ IMO because are unicorns a trope🤷🏾‍♀️???

1. 🦄 Magical Steeds
2. 🥀 Grieving Heroine
3. 🥷 Hidden Identity
4. 💔 Hopeless in Love
5. 🛡️ Battle Couple
6. 💘 Touch Her and Die
7. 👑 Forbidden Love/Royal Duty
8. 🧠 “I’m Not Good Enough”
9. 🐍 Enemies Within
10. 🔥 Revenge Quest
11. 🤝 Ride-or-Die Hero

the end....or is it?

It's release day! Happy Reading 💐😁😁!

My Thoughts:

Another wonderful addition to the Monstrous World series!

I am absolutely in love with Vallek and Ravenna. They are feral for each other and would literally die for one another. Vallek legit rumps for a 1000ft raven for Ravenna. Now that's love baby! Their chemistry was off the charts and the smut was phenomenal! So fucking hot!

The continued world building was done well. I liked that we got to see a different kind of orc. In book 1, we're thrown into the harsh reality and brutalities of clans that are isolated, but in Faeling, we're introduced to a civilized orc kingdom with beautiful cities, a rich culture, and intriguing court politics. I really enjoyed our time at Balmirran court.

The one thing that really frustrated me was how Ravenna was constantly fighting her feelings. Even when she eventually gave in, she kept going back and forth. I understand that’s part of her personal conflict—choosing revenge over love—but it was so obvious she needed to confide in Vallek, and it took nearly three-quarters of the book for that to finally happen. I didn’t get why, considering he was the most loyal and understanding mate ever. I guess she just wasn’t ready, but I found it frustrating, and some of her emotional reactions and decisions felt inconsistent and gave me whiplash.

On top of that, Ravenna made some questionable choices that seemed to prolong the inevitable. At times, this made the plot drag a little, and certain inner thoughts and even conversations with Vallek started to feel repetitive.

✨Faeling✨

Ok, ok, but Vallek is a dreeeeeam and Sarah knows exactly how to write males and romance while keeping me entertained with lower stakes. Every book I’ve read by her has made me so happy and so did this one!

This is book 4 in Wendel’s Monstrous World Series. It is technically a standalone but the experience is so much more heightened when read with the other three, plus there’s a light overarching plot and this book wraps up what we’ve been discovering along the way.

Ravenna has been in disguise for three years in the orc king’s court, serving as his seer. She has visions that have helped him conquer his territories, uniting the orcs under one banner, but her primary vision and reason for hiding has also been this: to kill the fae Queen who murdered her parents. And she’s hoped that Vallek would eventually help along the way. However, when her identity is revealed, immediately Vallek declares Ravenna his mate: another secret she’s kept from him for three years.

In this delightfully monstrous and spicy Romantasy, we follow Vallek as he desperately tries to woo Ravenna, political intrigue between orc courts and a marriage, a soldier who is willing to kill for his king- even if it’s the king’s mate, a feisty fae FMC who doesn’t always cope well, and a fae queen determined to keep her throne.

Watching Ravenna grow and let go was beautiful. Seeing Vallek love and support and pursue her through her secrets and rough edges was heartwarming. Their adversaries were many; the spice was wonderfully done; and it all came to such a delicious and exciting end!

Tropes you may find in Faeling are fated mates, hidden identities, court intrigue, orcs x fae x unicorns, medium high spice, forced proximity, unicorn sidekick, found family, size difference, black cat FMC, touch her and 💀, burn the world for him/her, cozy feels, dual 3rd POV, banter, and a HEA.

It is such a pleasure to be on Wendel’s arc team after being such a big fan of her work. Thank you so much for this opportunity!!

𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲:
Faeling is the fourth instalment in the Monstrous World series by author S.E. Wendel. One thing I will never be afraid to admit is that I do judge books by their covers. In my opinion they are the first impression that can determine the interest of a reader long before they ever think about reading the synopsis... and there's no denying that the covers throughout this series never fail to leave me with a lasting sense of awe. Every single one perfectly encapsulates the vibes that are waiting for you within the magical contents of the book, and I have to admit that this cover is my favourite of the four thus far. The dark and moody vibes? The possessive grip on the heroine's thigh and soft sensuality visible on the expressions which is being shared between both main characters? Absolute perfection, and already I cannot wait to see what the cover artist will come up with in future instalments of the series. The story itself continues to once again prove why Wendel is an auto-buy author of mine whom I rush to preorder with every new book announcement. The richly innovative setting and distinctive narrative voice is what helps drive the story forward into a compelling tale that will leave the reader unwilling to put their book down. The extensive yet easy to understand worldbuilding continues to expand with every new release as we are introduced and transported into new areas with ease and seemingly little effort. I had the best time getting to immerse myself into the Orc Kingdom and their customs which is something that has not yet been a highlight of the series. The pacing of the plot did let me down a little bit as I had hoped for certain revelations to come to light at an earlier stage in the story than what was delivered, but overall I found it to feel mostly steady with the main focus being on character and romantic development. I loved getting introduced to an array of side characters who all shared the spotlight with ease without failing to stand apart on their own. Found family will never fail to make me smile as it continues to be a consistent and strong theme throughout the entire series. Getting to witness our two main characters fight for the life that they yearned for with little thought of consequence was a rewarding experience, and overall I couldn't be happier with how their story has closed off with the ending providing the perfect introduction into what will come next. Faeling is able to be read as a standalone however I highly recommend reading the series in publication order to better understand background events and the cameos from past characters.

𝐏𝐥𝐨𝐭:
The plot throughout Faeling is a direct continuation of how the story leaves off in the previous book in the series and therefore I highly recommend that you read Sweetling first if you haven't done so already. The story begins with Ravenna waking up from her 'long sleep' earlier than what was planned with the need to avenge the tragic loss of her parents. Flash forward to three years later where she is currently living in disguise within the heart of the Orc kingdom and under the employ of the ruthless yet fair Orc King as his appointed seer. Ravenna's path for revenge and its success is reliant on enlisting the help of the King and his vast band of ruthlessly trained warriors... except for the slight issue that the male she plans to use for her own means is her azai; her fate-given mate. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to follow Ravenna on her journey as she quickly discovered that revenge isn't quite so simple once emotional connections begin to intertwine and complicate matters. I found the story to feel like a primarily character-driven tale as we follow Vallek in his desperation to secure his throne whilst also trying to convince his feisty mate to accept their bond. I enjoyed getting to witness Ravenna having to actively work towards earning the respect and loyalty of the orcish kingdom as opposed to just being granted it as a result of her connection to their king. I appreciated the emphasis on prejudice as a recurring theme and how this had a direct impact on our two main characters as they fought to prove their worth in a community rife with distrust and bias. I was a little disappointed about the revenge aspect of the plot due to the length of time that it took to fully address it which in the end I felt was a little rushed to conclude... however I did still find the action-packed scenes to be well written with full emotional impact. Some of the descriptions detailing the ever-expanding setting could have been a bit more condensed to best refine the story for me, but ultimately I still thoroughly enjoyed the experience reading this book as I continue to connect to all of the wonderful characters that have been introduced thus far. Wendel does a fantastic job at concluding a story whilst also setting up the events of the next instalment with ease, and I cannot wait to see what else we get to explore within this vast world that continues to hold my interest and intrigue.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬:
Ravenna Broch-Illyinia is a character that has been haunted by grief and heartache for far too long which is something that we witness leaving a great impact on her ability to form relationships with the new people in her life. Her emotional complexities and the battle with her morality helped to shape Ravenna into a deeply vulnerable yet commendable character that I continued to love with every new revelation. I adored how unapologetic she was in her path for revenge as it became clear how deeply engrained the emotional scars crafted by grief had taken root. I felt so much sympathy for Ravenna as it became clear how much she yearned for love and family whilst actively fighting against establishing new connections out of her fear of losing those closest to her. Ravenna really struggled to let new people in and I felt genuine pride over her growth as she began to lower her walls little-by-little with the patience and understanding of her peers. Her fear surrounding becoming a halfling Queen of a kingdom that were determined to reject her added a rawness to her character that felt fresh and real. I appreciated her flaws and willingness to step up and admit fault when things went wrong as this truly highlighted a humble strength that would help her to become a wonderful leader. The more her personality unravelled the more it became clear just how much of reactive demeanour was being used as a shield for protection. Emotional safety and reassurance was a necessity for Ravenna's growth and I couldn't have been happier with the outcome of her journey as she learned how to fight back against fate itself for the sake of her mate. As an individual I utterly adored her spitfire attitude and the way that Ravenna refused to back down from any challenge that was placed before her. Despite being significantly smaller in stature and lacking in the physical strength that orcs are known for... Ravenna done a wonderful job in displaying the power that she wields and how this can benefit the kingdom she will soon reign over as Queen. Her spirited nature paired with the underlying softness that made itself known around loved ones helped to balance out Ravenna and I couldn't be happier with the strong and sure-minded woman that emerged victorious in the end of her journey.

Vallek Far-Sight of the Broad-Back clan was a refreshing character to follow as, in my opinion, he stayed consistent from beginning-to-end with little need for growth. Whilst he had several conflicts and adversaries to overcome throughout the journey that we follow him on... as a character himself I enjoyed how settled Vallek seemed within himself and the unshakeable belief on what he thought was right. After fighting to correct the wrongs of his cruel predecessor for the past fifteen years Vallek is more determined that ever to unite all of his fellow orc kin under one crown to create a more unified kingdom. Whilst displaying some arrogant and stubborn traits throughout his story, there's no denying that within his heart all Vallek wants is the best for his family and his people. His willingness to do whatever it takes to secure his vision is part of what makes him such a formidable adversary to any who would dare try and cross him, and yet underneath the stoic ruler is a kind-natured man who is capable of so much softness and geniality. I love getting to witness the man underneath the crown just as much as I enjoyed getting to witness the beast that continues to fight for what he believes to be just. Vallek is a fair and righteous ruler who is committed to ensuring no orc knows what it means to suffer and go without the necessities that they require for survival. It was beautiful to witness not only how respected he is by his people but also how revered. He worked hard to attain his reputation and I really respected how important the significance of his people's opinion weighed upon his shoulders. Vallek is an undoubtably strong and demandable male that proved time and time again that he is unwilling to give up when things get difficult. The way he yearned to earn his mate's affections was swoon-worthy... even if he did get a bit pushy and bossy in the process in his bid to outwit her stubbornness. However there's no denying that Vallek honoured every firm boundary set in place and tried to prove that he could be the best friend and partner that is deserving of her love. The way he rushed to defend Ravenna without hesitation at every possible moment left me cheering on his behalf, and in the end there's no denying that Vallek put everything he had into securing the happy life that he has always wanted.

𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭:
The romantic progression between Ravenna and Vallek is easily one of my favourites throughout the series with its well-balanced combination of yearning and possessiveness that highlighted the emotional complexities that need to be addressed with a newly recognised mating bond. I was deeply touched by how instantly Vallek accepted his mate and all of her prickly ways despite recognising her reservations and the fact that she was keeping secrets. His patience, understanding and unabashed devotion helped to drive the relationship forward whilst Ravenna continued to work through her internal reservations and conflict. The way he continued to respect and recognise her boundaries whilst also actively working to understand her body language so that he could decern the right moment to push (for her own good) showcased a new side to Vallek that I believe was detrimental to the success of their relationship. Ravenna is the kind of woman that was in need of encouragement in order to move forward with her life and I had a great time getting to witness her strength in character that was emboldened by her ferocious mate. The way they complimented one another as a couple felt seamless and I was thrilled to see equal parts development both independently and as a couple. Ravenna offered Vallek the love and loyalty that he has always craved whilst he in-turn offered his mate the security and acceptance that she has always been denied. It was beautiful to witness how both characters had the exact attributes to offer and the way that they slowly began to understand one another on an innate level. What started off as work and commitment developed with ease into a seamless understanding on a baser level. Vallek's belief in Ravenna and the way he continued to assert her place by his side as an equal constantly left me swooning... and don't get me started on the intimate scenes that admittedly raised my tempature with how hot it was. But most importantly for me was the aftermath of those scenes when the couple get to simply exist as a newly mated pair in the quiet as opposed to the ever-growing demands that come with ruling a kingdom. The hushed confessions and gentle intimacy were the moments that I most looked forward to as I greatly appreciated the insight into the softness of their relationship. Ravenna and Vallek are a formidable coupling that prove time and again that they're willing to address their conflicts head on without faltering. The growth of their relationship was supported by their gradual commitment towards communication which was something that I was thrilled to see through to the end. Their journey was a sign of strength in their refusal to give up or bow down to the cards that fate was intending to deal. I couldn't be happier with the conclusion to their story and there's no denying that I hope that this isn't the last we'll see or hear of their characters. I would love to see some future cameos... but then again I often have difficulty with letting go of the things that I've loved.

𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:
Faeling was yet another strong addition to the Monstrous World series that offered a satisfying conclusion to some long-awaited answers whilst providing enough intrigue to build excitement for the next instalment. I'm so curious and unbelievably excited to discover the author's take on dragons as their existence has remained largely a mystery thus far. I'm curious about the dynamics of their kind and why they're seen as such a formidable adversary that is an ally to very few mythical creatures... and not to mention how their story will also join the continuation of the fae as we are introduced to our future heroine throughout this book. However before the release of this book we do first have the release of two novellas which I'll definitely be counting down the days to. This is one of those series that I will truly never tire from and dread the day that we receive the announcement of the final instalment.

I absolutely love where this series is going! This one felt higher stakes than the previous three and I really didn’t want to put it down for the second half of the book.

The chemistry between Ravenna and Vallek was fantastic and I appreciated seeing a reciprocal mate bond (so often it’s just the MMC with a human that can’t “feel” it the same way).

Ravenna was probably my favourite FMC to date. She’s smart, capable and devious. I also really enjoyed the herd of unicorns and the little laughs they provided throughout the book.

Halfling got me interested in the series because Orek and Sorcha was charming but the political intrigue, unique magic and variety of side characters has made me fall in love with it.

Faeling is a breathtaking fantasy romance that follows Ravenna, a half fae gifted with foresight who’s driven by vengeance after the loss of her parents. She isn’t some damsel in distress consumed with rage. Along with her innate power and even her father’s begrudging unicorn, Ravenna is determined to burn the faelands to the ground and bring down the evil Fae Queen Amaranthe. But plans for revenge intertwine with the ambitions of Vallek Far Sight, an orc chieftain determined to unite his clans and protect his people. When their paths collide, alliances, betrayal, and unexpected love make for a story I couldn’t put down. I absolutely loved this book! It’s my favorite in the series the worldbuilding, the romance, the tension, and the fire in Ravenna’s character pulled me in completely. This author is hands down my favorite monster romance writer, I feel so lucky to be part of her ARC and street team Faeling proves once again why her stories own my heart.

As much as I love S.E. Wendel and her Monstrous World series, this book suffers from what too many romantasy novels have lately: an insufferable FMC. Ravenna is even called an “impetuous brat” at one point, and honestly, that sums her up perfectly. Every problem in this story stems from her selfishness and reckless schemes. She is manipulative, spoiled, and frustrating to follow. The only thing that saved her chapters at all was her snarky, sassy unicorn companion.

Wendel’s writing remains beautiful as ever, but Ravenna’s character ruined the experience for me. She is not the worst FMC I have ever read, but she is definitely Wendel’s worst.

4.25 - ⭐⭐⭐⭐

“I’m not being romantic. I’m making a threat.”
“Ah. My mistake.

Faeling is the fourth instalment in the adult monster romantasy series, Monstrous Worlds. Each novel follows a separate couple but there is an overarching story to follow. In this novel, written in third person POV, the story follows Ravenna and Vallek, a faeling seer and an orc king bound together by fate.

Ravenna has experienced horrific loss at the hands of the fae queen. She is determined to avenge the family she lost and end the life of the queen she hates so she finds herself allying with Vallek Far-sight, an orc chief who has made it his mission to unite all the orcs under his reign. Ravenna's sight allows Vallek to strategically plan and build his borders but never did he realize beneath the facade of a forty year old human was a faeling beneath the cloak...a faeling who happens to be his mate.

Ravenna's revenge is her goal but as she finds herself drawn to her orc king who demands she stand by his side she must decide how far she will go for vengeance...and what she is willing to sacrifice in the process.

Vallek is KING and I loved how much he fought Ravenna for her love - the surrender was PERFECTION.

Ravenna is a very calculated female with her eye on the prize. She has been playing the long game but she cares for the orcs she has immersed in her life. I liked the struggle she had with the absolute love and adoration that Vallek gives her because she wanted to keep distance so she could focus on her mission. She is someone who loves fiercely and is determined to prove herself to the people she embraces as hers.

Vallek is a male who knows what he wants. His ability to keep a step ahead of Ravenna but also still follow her as she takes the reins was a thing of beauty. He wanted her however he could have her and he loved to push her buttons as a way of getting her to respond and live. He is fierce and powerful and has an air of confidence to him. He truly was a ruler that cared for her people and wanted what was best BUT he was not going to sacrifice his love for it. He would make it work no matter what.

“Nothing could have prepared me for you, sprite…”

In terms of spice I would place this spice at 4 spicy peppers out of 5 spicy peppers. There are about 8 spicy scenes in this book with the first one being a solo experience and the few after to be hands and mouth. As the characters become more comfortable and class we see them explore blood play and domination in the spice. It is explicit and detailed. I liked the passion and ferality in their spice and how they couldn't keep their hands off each other once they gave it. The surrender was a thing of beauty.

The story itself is a bit long but ultimately Vallek is finalising his power as orc king while dealing with rumblings coming from the fae lands. Ravenna, meanwhile, is pushing to empower Vallek further so she might use his army to attack the fae queen. We get quite a bit of political intrigue, especially because fae are the orc's enemy and Ravenna is half fae. There are excellent side characters that help push our characters together, either through their support of the romance OR being against it. We get to have previous characters return to shake things up and another character is introduced to tempt us for the next book which has me SO excited. I enjoyed the action and peril of this journey and seeing these characters banter it out as Ravenna tried to not give in had me giggling. Ravenna doth protest too much essentially and Vallek likes to call her out on it. He also likes to take control when she drags her feet. Oberon the unicorn was hilarious at times to help keep things moving and to guide Ravenna when she was struggling to decide. The ending is climatic and I like how it came full circle. The epilogue was amazing and has me so eager for the next book!

Overall, another excellent instalment in this series! If you love romantasy with burnt cinnamon role MMC and a black cat FMC keeping secrets then you need this book if your life!

Thank you to the author for this arc!

I don’t even know what to say about this book! Ravenna and Vallek had me swooning over them from the very beginning. I couldn’t get enough of them and I didn’t want it to end. Ravenna has gone through so much and has every right to seek revenge. Vallek has been nothing but supportive of his mate. The chemistry between the two is electrifying. This book is more than romance. It’s about defying the tyranny that plague the lands. It about rebuilding for a better future where people can live in peace. Evil and injustice will not reign. Ugh this was a masterpiece! I say this from someone who hasn’t read a book from S.E. Wendel prior.

On the spice meter, I would give it a 3. Vallek is a passionate lover as well as feral. I love from the beginning he did not hide his attraction. He wanted his mate anyway she would let him. Her claim on him was done so well. They are truly a great match. He brings out Ravenna’s feral side and she is not afraid to stake her claim too.

Overall, I’m mad at myself for waiting this long to read anything from this author. Now I have to go back and read the rest of the books from the series. She weaved a perfectly good story of love, revenge, and restoration.

This book didn't do it for me and 3 stars is generous. In the first three books of the Monstrous World series, I've really connected the most with the cozy fantasy aspects of the story. The deep connection between two people and the small moments featuring scenes of the mundane. Where I felt the most disconnect from the story is usually in the political, governmental aspects of the story. There is a prevalent immigration/integration of species theme that comes across strongly through all the books, and I understand that the worldbuilding around the politics is integral to answering questions that arise from that plot line. However, I just don't think it's a strong point of this story.

So in Faeling, there is just a huge weight towards the political storyline featuring the unification of the orc clans, negotiating between the different parties, the strategies that arise leading up to a confrontation with the fae queen. In a way, it has to be there because he is the King of the Orcs and she is his fated mate. My biggest gripe is that nothing is particularly surprising or clever. The stakes are high because you're told they are, but they never FEEL high. An issue will arise and the first potential solution the characters try is 98% of the time successful. The series has established itself on a precedent of "everything is going to be ok, they're going to be fine" so it never felt like there was any real or present danger. Not when deciding how not to offend two of the largest rival orc clans. Not when planning to kill the fae queen. Not when introducing the unicorn herds into the orc city. Not when presenting a fae woman as the Queen over the orcs. Breezed past all of these complications because the outcomes didn't matter. It had no weight on the overall outcome of the story because the central couple was already together and in love and so all that felt a little.. fan-servicey?

I wasn't vibing with Ravenna's seer powers. Her visions felt clear and easily interpreted and always came at the exact right moment. Not only that, but SHE herself always seemed to understand them correctly the first time. I think I would have liked to see her misinterpret something and have that cause a little chaos in the plot.

What saddens me the most is that this could have easily been a 5-star book but if it didn't skip over the very beginning with a "three years later." It could have been a much different journey. Instead of a very external plot about the politics and intersections between fae culture and orc unification, it could have been a smaller, contained story. We COULD have had an orc that everyone sees as a symbol, as a king but not as a male. And Ravenna who is hiding her true identity, and struggling to balance a duty to avenge her family and a growing desire to settle down with her mate. It would have been a nightly meeting over a game of fantasy-chess that I can't get myself to pronounce in any other way except teflon. It would have been a beautiful story about learning how to trust and open yourself up to a lover and face the possibility of rejection because the reward is worth the risk. IT WAS RIGHT THERE!!

✨arc review✨

y’all, there’s just some sort of magic that Wendel puts into these books because they just keep getting better and better. there was something about Faeling that brought me all sorts of deep fuzzy feelings. not only do we get to go back into the amazing world Wendel has created, but this time we get to look into how the orc kingdom is run (which is awesome to see and compare it to the kingdom in Ironling!)

Ravenna is a spitfire. She’s fierce and sarcastic and reminded me very much of a feral kitten 😂 but I absolutely loved how she didn’t back down from a challenge, even if that challenge failed (trying to avoid falling in love with her mate so she can proceed with her revenge plan). When she opened herself up, you can see how she uses her spitefireness as a protection.

Vallek is honestly one of my favorite mmcs ever written. He was cocky and headstrong but he was also so deeply devoted and understanding of Ravenna and his kingdom. I absolutely ADORED the way that he never pushed Ravenna to spill her secrets, but acknowledged that eventually when he has earned her trust and love that she will tell him on her own. All the side characters were perfection. They all brought a great blend to the story. I need a sitcom of all the unicorns 😂

Faeling is another spectacular edition to the Monstrous World Series and I can’t wait to continue this adventure with the next book! I just love everyone so much 🥹

I'm served🫦
Lit fue lo primero que me llamó a leerlo, y no defraudó JAJAJAJ

Si se preguntan por el spicy, esta bueno, no es tan explícito y hay una cantidad coherente.

...

My only criticism is that the whole thing felt endless. I didn't see the need for the situation to be so drawn out. Plus, it bothered me that Ravenna takes so long to tell Vallek what she was hiding from him, it was too dramatic.

Beyond that, I really liked it. It made me nostalgic at the end, remembering how they met when I saw the fan art✨️

I recommend it if you like monster romance (obviously), slow burn, a fmc with black cat energy and badass, and a very possessive and tender mmc💋

Also, the size difference? I'm served🫦
Lit was the first thing that drew me to read it, and it didn't disappoint lol

If you're wondering about the spicy, it's good, not too explicit, and there's a decent amount.

Faeling by S.E. Wendel Book Review
Monstrous World Series Book 4

Genre- Monster Romance
Heat Level - 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (3/5)
Rating Level - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

Vibes -
I loved immediatly when Ravenna wants to control her destiny and revenge her parents death instead of hiding. She takes control of her life and plot for revenge on the fae queen. She used her mate to and helps him unite the orc kingdom and to become it king for the purpose of her revenge plot.

Until her secret start to unravel around her and her fierce orc king mate, Vallek find out she’s been hiding and is his true mate.
He loves and adores his friend his court confidant, the fiesty, fiery little faeling and declares her Queen, not caring for the outcome but only to show the world his love for this woman.

However as more and more of ravennas secrets and past come to greet her, her love for Vallek only becomes stronger in their battlefield before them.

Faeling vibes are full of fierce female rage and grief and revenge that her strong orc king want to protect her from, you’ll have to read the book to see if Ravenna secrets cost her their lives ?

Note - Unlike in Sweetling book 3, when poor Molly was plagued by voices in her head of Bellarand unknown to her. I laughed so hard when Ravenna At least warned Vallek of hearing Oberon.

Tropes -
Female Rage
Black Cat FMC
Strong but soft for her
He falls first
Orc King x Halfing Fae
Size difference
Fated Mates
Political Intrigue
Touch Them and Die
Revenge & Conquest
She’s the Red Flag
You’ll be my Queen

se wendel writes the best orcs!!!
i don’t even know where to start with this review, i loved this one so much! it might be my favorite so far and i’m already looking forward to my reread.
ravenna was so interesting and amazing, i am obsessed with her character and vallek is a freaking animal 🥵 this couple is FERAL and am absolutely feral for them! this one got SPICY. the size difference was delicious, ravenna may be small but she is strong and mighty! they’re both so fiery and stubborn, i was obsessed with their romance and growth as a couple. they compliment each other so well.
the drama was top notch and the story has so much healing and forgiveness. i loved watching these characters develop overcome everything that was thrown their way. it got quite intense! i wish i could give ravenna a big hug. she hid herself away for so long, i’m so happy for her and her awesome mate!
i was really excited to get to know ravenna’s unicorn too bc we all know wendel writes the best animal companions and i was not disappointed, he was AMAZING!
i had so much fun reading this and the way it ended 👀 IM DYING FOR THE NEXT BOOK!

thank you so much mrs wendel for the arc 🖤 it was a pleasure to read!

I absolutely love this series! After reading Sweetling, I knew this book would be incredible. Ravenna was such an intriguing character, and I was so glad to learn more about her in this!

This book jumps into the plot immediately! Sweetling did a lot of the introduction to Ravenna’s story and the struggles the fae have had with Amaranthe, so Faeling was able to jump right into the thick of things.

I absolutely loved Vallek. Ravenna was working through a lot of trauma, and Vallek was a steady, calming, and healthy presence in her life. He was always there to remind her that he loves her no matter what, and I adore him for it! Not to mention the spice 😏

We also all know that the animal companions in S. E. Wendel’s books are the bestttt, and this was no different. I adore Oberon so much! And Callistix is such a badass!

This series is just so so good, y’all! I absolutely can’t wait to see what happens next.

TROPES:
Fated Mates
Half Fae/Orc
Hidden Identity
Hurt/Comfort
Badass Unicorns

Thank you so so much to S. E. Wendel for sending me a copy for an honest review. 💖

This was amazing continuation of the Monstrous World Series. This picks up a couple years of Sweetling in the beginning but does move forward to current time line within the first couple chapters. S. E. Wendel does a wonderful job with her world building and characters.

I love Ravenna and Vallek. Their banter and their character development was very interesting and entertaining. There were some funny moments especially when it involved Vallek’s sisters (Asta, Eydis) and Eydis’s Mate (Hilde). I do love that there are mentions and appearances of characters from previous books that tie each of them together.

I love and I mean love the animal sidekicks each book provides. Oberon did not disappoint, he was sassy unicorn and we love them sassy. We did also learn more about the unicorn herd that was protecting Ravenna.

I highly recommend reading this and the Monstrous World Series. I highly encourage to start at Halfling to additional world building and more adorable animal side characters

Where do I even begin? The way Sarah weaves her tales is nothing short of extraordinary. I love the fluff, the banter, the animal sidekicks, the magic, the spice, the cozyness.. ahh I just love it all.

This story follows Ravenna on her quest for revenge which leads her into a orc tribe that is run by chieftain Vallek. This hunk of man meat is top tier.

Need a man who:
✨️ protects
✨️ provides
✨️ makes you laugh
✨️ challenges you
✨️ proves his love
✨️ good with his *hands*

Then Vallek is your guy.

As Ravennas secrets start to reveal themselves will their mate bond be enough, or will they unravel?

I don't want to give anything away, but golley I just love Obi. His banter had me giggling from the very beginning. If you need a cozy magical world to dive into with a bit of action and blood- jump into this world. You won't regret it.

4.5 rounded up and absolutely my favorite out of the series.

The drama es muy dramatico, the size difference spice is the bees knees and I can happily say I wasn't sure how this was going to end, and it was still everything I wanted.

Would have been a full five stars but I have limited tolerance for the "withholding information" trope as it's an inbred cousin of the miscommunication trope and we all know that is straight garbage. Thankfully it righted itself out but it still left its mark in my brain.

Ya’ll this book is AMAZING! I am obsessed with Ravenna. She is the moment. She is a whole vibe. She is one of my favorite FMCs of all time. If you like demure and cutesy she is not that. If you want a feisty hellion who is more concerned with her revenge plot than stupid love stuff she’s your girl.

And Vallek. What can I say? Big? Check. Possessive? Check. Down bad? Check.

If you’ve been around for a while you know how much I love the Monstrous World series and Faeling is the perfect addition to an already phenomenal series. I laughed, I cried, I screamed. All the things.

You can grab Faeling today! While it can be read as an interconnected standalone I would highly suggest reading the other four books in the series before picking this one up but you’re going to LOVE IT!

I’m kind of disappointed 😔 this story just feels disconnected from the rest of the series. The plot becomes kind of nonexistent at the 60% mark and I was like what’s going on, there was so much focus on the mating, I just started getting bored

I absolutely loved this book! This book is fantasy romance with fae magic, danger, and slow burn romance. Read if you like…

• fated mates
• black cat half fae FMC
• orc chieftain MMC
• she’s the 🚩
• female rage
• “you’ll be my queen”
• unicorn sidekick

Ravenna is a half-fae heroine full of fire, grief, and grit, and her tension with Vallek? Slow burn perfection!! Vallek is an orc chieftain with his own burdens and secrets.

The world building is vividly depicted and I appreciated the plot summaries of the previous books at the beginning. A refresher to the series is always nice!

If you love lush world-building, morally gray choices, and romance tangled with danger, Faeling is a must read!

when he's big and green 🥵

(wanted to like it more than I did because sweetling wrecked my expectations and I fear the plot was trying to do too many things so I just got tired by like page 450 or so tbh. but the characters and the world? delicious)

I could read books in this series forever tbh.
I mean really, there has not been a single one that wasn't 5 stars for me and this was no exception.
now, The FMC kind of pissed me off a little, but revenge plots tend to be that way for me because i find that, in most cases, the characters seeking the revenge become so extremely irrational that it's infuriating. This did have a bit of that, but the overall story was so good that I let it go.
the King. The KING. is so kind and sweet, and patient, and even kind of a charming flirt despite being this huge, feasrsome leader of the Orcs. it's my favorite. i love a big scary man who is actually a cinnamon roll inside :))
i loved hoe much he loved her.
the story was rich and complex, with love and family, and tragedy, and hard choices and high emotions and tension and yearning—it had everything I wanted. including cameos of characters i loved in previous books.
the unicorns might have stolen just a tiny bit of the show. I love how sassy they are in that sort of detached from humanity because they're above it all way. they were funny and the banter was peak.
honestly the banter in all of these books is great.
no notes.
I cannot wait for the next book.
