He left with a promise. He returned with scars. She never stopped loving him.

Caden Mason knows falling for his best friend’s sister is crossing a line, but one look from Lucy Carr and the line stops mattering. What starts as a secret romance turns into something real in the quiet corners of a Georgia summer. They make a plan built on letters, love, and the hope he’ll come back to her. But war has a way of changing everything.

Lucy never stops writing. Never stops hoping. Even when the silence stretches and the world moves on, she holds tight to the connection they built. But when Caden finally returns, he’s not the same man she said goodbye to. He’s distant, hurting, and carrying more than physical scars. Still, she sees him, and she’s not walking away.

Caden struggles with grief, guilt, and the weight of who he thinks he’s become. But Lucy stays. Through letters, late-night moments, and quiet truths, they begin to rebuild something stronger. It’s not easy. Forgiveness takes work. But love doesn’t let go, and neither do they. ‍

Caden starts out strong but emotionally closed off, a soldier hardened by survival. Lucy begins hopeful and steady, and becomes even more unshakable as she fights for both of them. Their relationship shifts from forbidden and intense to fractured and raw, then grows into something deeper, built on truth, trust, and the quiet courage of choosing each other.

A steamy, small town, forbidden, brother’s best friend, military romance featuring a grumpy sunshine dynamic, secret letters, surprise pregnancy, a scarred and protective hero, and a love that refuses to quit. It’s about healing through trauma, reclaiming identity, and holding onto love, family, and belonging when everything feels lost. At its core, it’s a story of survival, second chances, and choosing each other again and again through pain, silence, and change.

The Elevator Pitch: A scarred soldier comes home to the woman he was never supposed to love and the life he thought he'd lost. Secrets, letters, and a surprise that changes everything collide in this emotional, steamy romance. It's a story of second chances, quiet strength, and love that refuses to let go.

Keep the tissues handy as this is an emotional journey showing the strength of love. The author took us deep into the feelings of loss, both physical and mental that both Caden and Lucy experienced when he came home as a broken survivor. Beautiful story.

This was a very fast-paced book (which I didn’t expect) but if u like short & fast romance books this is for you! Lucy knew what she wanted and went after it, which I love! She didn’t give up on Caden even when he was giving up on himself. Side note - I love how supportive his brothers are and the military theme with all the male characters. I can say I wished Caden and Lucy love story had more details and depth to it. It’s kinda like I got dropped in the middle of the book with no backstory. But if you are just looking for a quick straight to the point love story then look no further, this is a book for you.

She's not going to blink first in this waiting game.

Caden Mason is preparing to be deployed in a week, if he can keep his mind off of Lucy Carr. She's wanting him to ask her out, but she's the sister of his best friend, Noah. Therefore, the bro code puts her off limits. But she's tired of waiting. Either they start their relationship now and continue it when he returns home, or she won't be waiting for him when he returns. That's enough of a threat to make him admit to himself that she is his Sunshine and that he can deal with Noah when he returns home. They just won't let Noah know about them until then.

For now there are texts and meetings on back roads... Too bad best-laid plans are sometimes useless.

Two days before deployment, he's helping at his brother Jake's farm when Caden's twin, Brentley, returns home from his deployment. He's so in tune with Caden that he immediately picks up on Caden's interest in Lucy. Jake had missed it altogether, and for fear that he'd mention it to Noah, Caden hadn't told him. His brothers have it correct; he's all in with Lucy; she's the one for him!

Lucy has decided that she's not willing to wait until he returns home to be with him. They talk of their plans for when he returns, including children in their future. But they still agree to not let Noah know about their relationship until later.

This deployment ended early for Caden after a bomb exploded near him. He's lost part of one of his legs and also has injuries to his arm. He doesn't want to be a burden to Lucy and wants to free her from any obligation she may feel towards him.

She regrets that he was hurt, but his injuries haven't lessened her love for him. He can be so stubborn at times! But until he gets it through his thick skull that she still loves him and still wants him, and only him, in her life as her husband, it's a waiting game. And she can be as stubborn or even more so than him. He belongs to her, and she belongs to him. And he better get that through his thick skull soon!

Caden Mason is about to be redeployed when Lucy Carr ask him a shocking question. She lists the reasons why he hasn’t done anything, even tho he looks at her like she is his everything. The first being that of her brother Noah. She pretty much tells him to put up or shut up. lol. I love his nickname for her. While they talk about feelings and reasons and the like, we meet his brothers- (other than Jake who we have met earlier in the series spin offs) Brentley (Caden’s twin) and North. Caden & Lucy are so cute and romantic together. Once he goes off to be deployed they write a lot and then something happens. Meanwhile, the unexpected happens on Lucy’s part and lets her sister, Grace and Lexi know. They decide to keep it secret for as long as they can and come up with a plan. Ugh, once I read that I was like ugh, you just jinxed yourselves! Finding out that Caden’s hurt shakes Lucy, and I get why Caden acts the way that he does. But, I got really upset about how he is treating his family. My grandfather spoke of how he got hurt during World War 2 and what happened after, and he was just hurt and had shrapnel. Caden is hurt even worse than that.

Lexi and the others drag Lucy to a Girl’s Night and it is hilarious. Especially Paisley. lol. This section made me laugh and cry a lot. It really bothered me that he was so down on himself. He survived and yes, he has survivor’s guilt on top of everything else, but he needs to get better because Lucy needs him. There are a lot of misunderstandings between them that upset me.

Change is hard, as is healing. When Caden finally began to believe in himself again, it made me cry. It was inspirational and beautiful. Lucy handles him well and it made me cry. They begin to be cute and sweet again as they take things slowly and talk to each other. Brentley is hilarious with his antics. I have to say that Dr. Tate, the therapist was a Godsend and stuff he said hit me as truth. It’s like a miracle happened. Everything after that is so sweet, romantic and beautiful. I loved it. I can’t wait to see who is next to fall.

Lucy is done waiting. Tired of hoping her brother’s best friend, Caden, will finally take the leap, she gives him an ultimatum just one week before his deployment. It’s the wake-up call he needs. With his departure looming, they spend one unforgettable night together, making plans and exchanging promises before he leaves. The time goes slowly as they pour their hopes into letters filled with dreams of the future they’ll share once he comes home. Lucy even agrees to keep their relationship secret from her brother, Noah, until Caden returns. Everything feels hopeful. Certain. Bright. But as the saying goes, people plan and God laughs. The letters suddenly stop. When Lucy learns Caden has been injured, her overwhelming relief is simple: thank God he’s alive. Caden doesn’t see it that way. Yes, he survived, but he believes he’s no longer the man Lucy fell in love with. Missing a leg and drowning in self-doubt, he’s convinced she deserves better than a “broken” man like him and does everything he can to push her away. Unfortunately for Caden, Lucy is just as stubborn as he is. She refuses to let him decide her future for her. Missing leg or not, he is still her man. Still the one she loves. And she is determined to stand by his side whether he wants her to or not. I’m a complete sucker for stories about wounded veterans and their difficult journey back to the lives they left behind, whether those wounds are physical or emotional. But even more than that, I love stories about the women who stand beside them — their strength, their courage, and their unwavering love that sees past scars and fear to the man fighting his way out of the darkness. Watching the support Caden receives from Lucy, his family, and his friends was incredibly moving, though it also made me think of the many veterans who don’t come home to that kind of love and safety net. This story is heartfelt, emotional, and deeply moving, so keep those tissues handy.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Saving Caden (Brothers of Oakside Military Heroes, Book 2) by Kaci Rose

Emotional, heartfelt, and impossible not to feel. Saving Caden is one of those romances that hits you straight in the chest and doesn’t let go. From the very first secret kiss to the silence of unanswered letters, this story is drenched in longing, sacrifice, and love that refuses to fade.

Lucy Carr is everything a romance heroine should be—strong, loyal, and endlessly compassionate. Falling for her brother’s best friend was always risky, but her belief in Caden never wavers, even when the world (and war) take everything from him. Her quiet strength and determination to fight for their future had me tearing up more than once.

Caden’s journey is raw and heartbreaking. A wounded Marine, both physically and emotionally, he truly believes he’s no longer worthy of love, family, or happiness. Losing his leg, disappearing from Lucy’s life, and then waking up to discover he’s a father makes his internal battle feel painfully real. His fear, guilt, and self-loathing are written with so much authenticity that you can’t help but ache for him.

The pen pal letters, the surprise baby, and the grumpy sunshine dynamic all work beautifully together, creating a story that’s tender yet powerful. Add in a protective brother ready to throw punches and a small-town setting that wraps around the characters, and the emotional stakes only deepen.

This is a story about fighting for love when it feels impossible, about healing, forgiveness, and choosing hope even when you feel broken. I cried, I swooned, and I rooted for Lucy and Caden every step of the way.

If you love scarred heroes, military romance, and deeply emotional love stories that leave your heart full (and your cheeks wet), Saving Caden is an absolute must-read. 💔➡️❤️.

Ensuring Promises are Kept -
Even though Caden tried everything to stay away from Lucy, his willpower finally broke when she finally pushed his boundaries, which led to them enjoying a mind blowing night together before he deployed. Lucy had been in love with her brother’s best friend for a while, so she was really happy when he finally acknowledged his feelings and agreed for them to be together. Levi and Caden continued their relationship whilst he was on deployment, but everything changed just as she discovered her life was about to change.

Unfortunately, Caden’s life changed before his deployment was completed and it led to him trying to push Lucy away, but she stood her ground and continued to stay by his side. Hoping to help Caden get put of the state he was in, Lucy decided to reveal the secret she had been keeping and it made him work harder. As luck would have it, Caden and Lucy got to have the future they planned before his deployment.

I really enjoyed reading this emotionally challenging story that highlighted how true love is more than just words. The characters went through a difficult time, which could had destroyed the life they had been planning, but perseverance and their determination to succeed made it possible for them. It is important you carve out plenty of quiet time before you start reading this book, because you won’t want to take a break until you reach the end.

The stories this author presents to us might be fiction , but in reality, they truly are stories that are happening in our everyday lives.
A young military man , in this case, Caden Mason, is Noah Carr’s friend. A man that rose from the ashes after a devastating injury.
Noah’s sister, Lucy, has been in love with Caden since the day she met him. Even though Caden has feelings for her, she’s young and besides he’s leaving Georgia to go overseas for his next mission.
Letters keep them in contact until they stop after a mission goes wrong and Caden is injured.
We read or hear about stories similar to this one. A young couple with a future mapped out, find themselves having to deal not only with the physical injuries many of our brave men and women in the military have to endure, but also the psychological and emotional traumas that have left them feeling less than themselves.
Will Caden and Lucy be able to overcome the obstacles they will be facing? Both will need to be strong not only for each other, but also for themselves as a new future, just as wonderful , awaits them.
Finally, the story is also a reminder that as individuals and as a nation, we must each do more for the troops and their families.

Saving Caden is part of the Brother's of Oakside Series. Here we get Lucy and Caden's story. A short read filled with pure love, emotion and a little bit of steam.

Lucy is the little sister of Noah (Saving Noah) and there's been a bit of mutual Pining going on her for Caden and vice versa. A stolen kiss seals there romance, and while they make their declaration of love they agree to wait to announce their relationship until Caden returns home from deployment.

Only two issues crop up with that plan - firstly surprise Lucy is pregnant and secondly Caden "ghosts" Lucy by not writing back. But it's not as simple as he just doesn't want to, it's a case of he's unable to due to being injured in the line of duty.

Can Caden find his way back to Lucy and be the man he promised he would be. Or will the injuries he's sustained be a road block to him claiming his woman?

What to expect

From the very first page, Saving Caden by Kaci Rose draws you in and doesn’t let go. The chemistry between Caden and Lucy is absolutely adorable, and their connection feels genuine and heartwarming. Lucy’s unwavering love and belief in their future together radiates through every chapter, while Caden’s devotion to Lucy is clear—he knows she’s the one he wants by his side.

Caden’s journey after returning from deployment is deeply moving. Kaci Rose masterfully depicts his pain and emotional struggle, making you truly feel what he’s going through. The authenticity of his challenges and his process of healing are written with incredible sensitivity. Lucy’s love is the lifeline Caden needs, even as he tries to push her away. Her determination and compassion make her a heroine worth rooting for.

Lucy’s refusal to give up on Caden is inspiring, and her persistent hope and strength gradually help Caden find his way back. Their story is uplifting, filled with hope and unconditional support.

If you’re looking for a romance featuring a wounded hero and an unstoppable heroine, Saving Caden offers everything you could wish for. It’s heartfelt, powerful, and unforgettable—a must-read for fans of emotional and inspiring love stories.

Saving Caden hit me right in the feelings. This is one of those stories where the romance starts soft and hopeful, gets ripped apart by circumstances, and then slowly stitches itself back together—scar tissue and all.

Lucy’s quiet strength stole the show for me. She loves Caden without being naive about the cost, and even when everything goes wrong, she never turns bitter. Caden, on the other hand, is all wounded pride and self-doubt, convinced he’s too broken to deserve the life he once dreamed of. Watching him come home, face what he lost, and realize what he still has was equal parts heartbreaking and satisfying.

The letters, the secret kiss, the surprise baby—all of it works because the emotions feel earned. This isn’t just about rekindling a romance; it’s about forgiveness, healing, and choosing each other again after the world has changed you. For a novella, it packs a lot of heart without feeling rushed.

If you enjoy small-town military romances with real stakes, a protective but damaged hero, and a heroine who refuses to give up on love, this one is absolutely worth the read.

Lucy Carr always knew that Caden Mason was the one for her. As time grew closer to his deployment, he tried to remain strong and not give in to the love he feels for her. For Lucy, the night was magical as they came together in love which gave her beautiful memories to carry her through their time apart. She has continued to write him letters, but couldn’t tell him of the secret she was keeping…he is going to be a father. When she learns that he has been injured and on his way to Germany, she almost falls apart. What is keeping her strong is her love for him and the baby they are going to have. He arrives home with an injured arm and missing the lower left part of his leg. He is bitter and believes that his chance of the life he had planned with Lucy is now gone. While he is at Oakside to recover, he knows that she will soon visit him, what will he say? What will she think when she sees his injuries? As she doesn’t let him send her away, his family and friends impress on him that he made it home, maybe not the same man that left, but he has a future. He has a woman who loves him and their child. A touching and tender story filled with the hope and the love of family! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)

I couldn't wait to get Caden (more like Lucy's) story so I purchased direct from Kaci's website. Oakside will always be the best place to come back to. It's always a story of hope and rebuilding and learning a new you.

Caden is what I would like to think of in military romance books, as the typical 'before and after' guy. Considering he has family in the service, and knows Noah and his story, it's a bit surprising how his story unfolds. I'm talking strictly from a fictional perspective! Even service people today know the chances of coming back in one piece, mentally or physically, and they still have to overcome and rebuild their lives.

I love that this story show more of the emotional tole on both people in the couple, knowing he has physical problems as well. Lucy being the anchor really shows how strong, silent and steady and just showing up can mean more than anything. No one in a partnership needs to be perfect, you just have to be there. Be willing to work at the hard things and talk about everything. Home is not a place but a feeling and hopefully a person that can fill up the holes in your soul.

Caden and Lucy’s story is sweet, poignant and insightful. Not wanting to incur the wrath of her protective brother, Caden and Lucy begin a secret relationship. Both are all in on their relationship and have dreams of their future together as he begins his deployment. Their letters to each other are a tangible tether between them, each word etched into their hearts. An unexpected pregnancy is the only secret Lucy keeps from Caden, not wanting him to be distracted while in dangerous situations. Then his letters stop and the unthinkable happens. Believing his injuries make him less of a man and entirely unworthy of Lucy, Caden shuts her out. Lucy is not having it, especially now that he is home and in the rehabilitation centre his brother and his established. Her secret is soon revealed and though initially angered by her deception, Caden becomes determined to become the man worthy of her love. It spurs him to carry on past the pain, the fears and the doubts. He does as Lucy once begged him to do….he chooses love and is willing to fight for it, just as Lucy is doing.

This touching and inspiring book has my heartfelt recommendation.

Lucy, Noah’s feisty little sister, has always caught the eye of Caden, her big brother’s best friend. And watching her be the one who finally convinces him to drop his walls and let her in was so satisfying. At first glance, this might sound like your classic “best friend’s little sister” romance, but there’s so much more heart here. With Caden returning home as a wounded soldier and Lucy fighting fiercely for their love, the story had plenty of tender, emotional moments. It’s a lovely reminder that some things, and some people, are absolutely worth fighting for.

I also adored the whole Oakside village. Lucy’s friends rallying around her and Caden’s many brothers popping in added warmth, humor, and that cozy small-town feel. The side characters truly brought the story to life.

I’ve read quite a few books by this author now, mostly from the Mustang Mountain series and a couple from the Oakside series. And yes, I’ll definitely be continuing with this series. Can’t wait for more!.

I was excited to see that Ms. Rose was taking us back to Oakside and we were going to be introduced to another injured military man who feels he is not a man who could be loved. Each book in this series is emotional, and its stories are ones that some people could relate to.
Saving Caden is a brother's best friend, grumpy sunshine and broken hero love story of Caden and Lucy. She pushes his buttons to have more before he deploys and he fights it because she is his best friend's little sister. However, the pull is too strong to fight and the heart wins. Letters are mailed and futures are talked about until Caden's life changes due to an explosion. Back at Oakside, he feels less of a man and pushes Lucy away. Lucy is determined to show Caden that he is what she wants and that she fell in love with him, and that hasn't changed. When secrets are revealed, hearts are hurt and lives are changed.
I loved how both families were there with support and encouragement, even her brother. Caden and Lucy's story is one of true love and healing.

I loved Caden and Lucy’s whirlwind love story before he was deployed. It continued in the letters they wrote each other, and I especially loved the symbolism of the house planning and him describing what he was drawing in his notebook for it. But what was even more beautiful was the way he had blueprints made up after he healed from the loss of his lower leg. I liked that Lucy’s girlfriends were there for her without question. Love when women lift each other up, love when a book depicts that. Caden and Lucy have a great love, but it doesn’t exist in a vacuum; they have a family and a support system that runs strong. And it’s that which got this book that extra star.
Book is SAFE.
Heat is EXPLICIT with a virgin heroine.
TRIGGERS include medical details, language, and deployment flashbacks.
TROPES include Best Friend’s Sister, Military, Scarred Hero, Bechdel Test, Family Ties, Instalove, Surprise Pregnancy, Secret Pregnancy, Disabled Hero, Healing Hero.

Even though he is deployed Caden is no longer able to deny his feelings for Lucy, his best friend’s sister, once he realizes she feels the same. As they plan their future together they agree to keep the feelings they have for each other between them until he returns however a career ending and life changing injury changes everything.

Lucy has loved Caden for years and just wants a future with him. When she learns about his injury all she wants is to be there to help him heal and show him they can always have the future they wanted even if it may not look the same and she is willing to be strong enough for both of them.

One of the most touching parts of the story was the letters that they wrote to each other that showed the depth of their feelings as they take us on an emotional journey that features healing, hope and a love that can overcome anything as long as they are together.

“Saving Caden” is another winner by Kaci Rose. This military romance is really full of emotional heart as it follows the journey of Caden. As he navigates the military, his loss, and life back home, he struggles. However, Lucy remains steadfast, providing support when needed and also pulling back even if she doesn’t want to do so. They are a compelling couple who find their way back to one another through it all – the heartfelt emotions, the self-concerns, the loss, the life, the past, and the future. They are supported by family, friends, and each other in their journey. “Saving Caden” is well-written with characters that tell the story. I loved this page turner with its emotional roller-coaster as Caden and Lucy and baby find their forever after happiness.

Caden and Lucy have been circling each other for years. She is the younger sister of his best friend. All changes when Lucy takes the situation into hand.
These two want and talk about their future after he comes back from deployment. Writing to each other and until Caden stop, just after Lucy finds out she is carrying a reminder of their time together.
Caden comes home badly hurt, burns and lose of a leg. He has also come home with a different out look and wants no one near him. Pushing people he and who loves away. Anger is his new nature. Oh Lucy will not give up and when Caden is very angry and hurt when he finds out by their baby, he pushes her even further away.
The emotion, drama, pain and pure steadfast love shines through.

Lots of emotions in this book! I really loved this book and I could not put it down! Caden is ready to head off for his deployment. He and Lucy have been falling in love, in secret, as Lucy's big brother would not be happy. But the night before deployment they were able to express their love.

However the deployment doesn't go as planned and Caden is hurt, losing his leg. He has a long road ahead of him, not just physically, but emotionally. And surprise, Lucy is now expecting his baby. Can Caden heal both physically and emotionally to be there for Lucy? Can Lucy help him heal?
What a wonderfully written and emotional book. I love going back to Oakside and seeing everyone there! I highly recommend it!

This is book 2 in Brother's of Oakside Military Heroes series. Tropes: military, secret romance, love letters, scarred hero, and surprised pregnancy. Before Caden was deployed him and Lucy kept their relationship secret. Love letters sent keeping hope and love alive. I felt for Caden after being severely injured where he lost a leg and pieces of who he was. Lucy was strong and stood by him even when he tried to push her away. I loved how Caden finally embraced Lucy's love and their unborn child. An emotional ride had me rooting for Caden and Lucy.

Caden has been drawn to Lucy but her brother is his friend and he is deploying in a few days. Lucy pushes him and makes it clear she wants him. They spend days together and build their relationship but keep it a secret.. They are writing to one another and planning for the future when communication stops. Caden is badly injured and loses a leg and his confidence as a man. Lucy hasn’t told him she is pregnant and she has to fight to get him to communicate with her. She fights for their future when he is not willing to, until he is able to fight his way though the fear and move forward with life again.

This book’s storyline hits really close to home. Caden thinks he’s being noble and backing out of all the promises and plans for the future he has made with Lucy. Being hurt and permanently disabled was never part of either of their plans, and he doesn’t intend to trap her into taking care of him or being with somebody who is not perfect for her.. Lucy however, is a woman in love who knows everything they planned is still their dream. Now she just has to convince stubborn Caden. This is a great read that will hit you on so many emotional levels. I wish I could give it more than five stars.

I can never get enough of this series. Kaci is hands down my favorite author for the wounded/scarred H trope. Ever since I read book 1- Lexi & Noah’s story when it first came out, I have been searching and searching for similar books like this and have yet to find any.
Caden and Lucy are yet another great couple and their story was everything I wanted. If there was anything I could change it would be what I always say after I read a book from Oakside Military Heroes- I want it to be longer!! I’m never ready for the stories to be over. They are so easy to lost in and I hate coming to the end.
This is one series I cross my fingers and hope that Kaci keeps on continuing to write.

Such a beautifully emotional story. Both Caden and Lucy have feedings for one another. But her being the sister of his best friend mashes her off limits. But Lucy doesn’t see it that way she lets him know where she stands on wanting to be with him before his deployment. The end up getting together while hiding it from her brother. During deployment he gets injured, feels like he isn’t good enough for her. But Lucy isn’t letting that stand. She pushes forward because she wants a life with him.
This story tugs at your heart. You feel their emotions, their stubbornness, and Lucy’s determination to get her man. This was so well written. I fell in love with this.

Caden and Lucy loved each other. Before Caden left for his last deployment he and Lucy made plans to tell everyone when he came home. But he’s severely injured while overseas and now wants nothing to do with Lucy. But Lucy won’t give up. That’s what I loved most about this story. Lucy refuses to give Caden up and refuses to let him give up on them. She fights for him and will have his love and him in her and their child’s life. Well written story that drags you in and makes you feel what both characters are feeling. I loved it.

This book was beautiful, so many emotions through out it! True love, fighting for it and finding your way home through it all. Caden lost himself through pain, grief and trauma and thought he was doing her right by pushing her away. Lucy loved him through it all and fought for him when it was too hard for him to fight. They were each other’s homes and their love was simply beautiful. It was well written and I loved seeing characters from other books throughout. They’re both so lucky to have the close knit village that they do. No cheating or OM/OW drama, secret/surprise baby, virgin FMC, dual POV, HEA and a sweet epilogue in the future. Looking forward to Brentley and North’s books!

Saving Caden is both Heartwrenching and Heartful. Caden is a wounded warrior with a heart of gold struggling to come to terms with his new reality. He and Lucy have an undeniable bond, and their chemistry is so intense. I love that we get to see them together before he deploys, and watching them find their way back to each other after everything? It’s so beautiful. I love that author Kaci Rose highlights the very real struggles of military veterans and their families—she tackles the hard stuff with grace, dignity, and respect. This novella is breathtaking and so beautifully done.
