Mayhem In Munchkinland Part 1. After purchasing a chest of old comics from an unwitting old gent, Kevin and Peter return to the home of their friend Mary to check out their good fortune. Inside they find a tome which, when opened, releases a powerful magic gateway in the form of a tornado. The three friends appear in the middle of a battle of short warriors. Kevin and Peter are pushed into a field of flowers where the minuscule fighters dare not follow. Mary, manages to outrun her pursuers for a while, but is finally caught. Astonishingly, she is saved by a tall "man" made of sticks and with a pumpkin for a head! Based on the Wonderful Wizard of Oz books.
I stumbled across this, free, on hoopla. I'm a sucker for an Oz retelling. I saw that hardly anyone has read this, let alone reviewed it, so I thought, "what the hell?"
This was written in the early 90's. A simple black and white comic that takes three people (Kevin, Peter, and Mary) and a dog named Max to Oz via magical old book they get sucked into. The biggest problem this comic has is the dialogue. It's cheesy. The next problem this comic has is the artwork. It's also cheesy. The munchkins are these little violent, muscular men who beat the crap out Kevin and Peter with bats. Mary gets away and she's saved by...Pumpkinhead. It's pretty stupid.
This feels like the project of a bunch of adolescence boys taking their first grown-up steps into the world of comic books. It takes itself too seriously and it's utterly ridiculous.
It's also VERY SHORT. Less than five minutes of reading.
