The Dusty Brooms #1

Sympathy for the Blues

Rate this book
It’s the 1970s, and two young men are brought together by their shared love of music.

Ray Roderick and his best friend Gene Hillard form a blues-rock band: the Dusty Brooms. With Ray on lead vocals and Gene on rhythm guitar, they take their home state of Michigan by storm. Though Ray feels a peculiar longing in his heart every time he plays music with Gene. It messes with his head—and he buries his emotions in the arms of beautiful women.

Little does Ray know that Gene is feeling the same for him. Jealousy sparks within Gene every time he sees Ray with a woman. But he shouldn’t be jealous—no, it’s outrageous for him to want his best friend like that. A romantic relationship with Ray could never happen, as the Dusty Brooms rise in popularity.

But as his feelings grow stronger, it gets harder and harder to deny them…

[Sympathy for the Blues is Book One of The Dusty Brooms trilogy. It is a slow burn 1970s MM rockstar romance. Please heed the content notes as this book includes sensitive topics.]

And they were /bandmates/ 😱

Just the right amount of tugging at my heartstrings with a dash of heat to hook me. I'm so excited for more of Ray and Gene braving the hazards of love and rock 'n' roll. The slow burn is going to be so worth it.

Not to mention the ART. Gosh this is a pretty book. I'm also loving all the gorgeous accompanying pieces Genesee's been making. They've really brought the Dusty Brooms to life. When an author adores their characters this much the passion becomes contagious.

Thanks so much to Genesee for sending an advance copy my way. I'm leaving this review of my own accord

Sympathy for the Blues is a very cool and unique take on 70s double bi-awakening rock star romance! This was actually my first time reading rock star romance, and it was very cool! The present-tense 3rd person writing style is really interesting, and immerses you in the book in a weird way - almost like you're watching a movie!

To start, this book is the first in a series that revolves around The Dusty Brooms, but particularly the friendship/blossoming romance between their lead singer and guitarist, Ray and Gene. Ray is what I will affectionately call half f*ckboy half awkward dweeb, but there are some very endearing things about him as well. Gene is a bit more sensitive and thoughtful than Ray, but he has his share of flaws too. These boys are TOXIC together, but in a very entertaining way that will keep you wondering wtf they're going to do next. The book is a slow-burn in terms of spice (but the little bit of spice we get in it is hot!!) but there's lots of pining from afar and a lot of really sweet soft stuff like cuddling and comforting each other.

The 70s setting is very in-depth! The author obviously did a lot of research on this era and everything from music to clothing to the slang the characters fully takes you to that time in history. And especially if you check out all the art of scenes from the book on the author's social media, it paints SUCH a vivid picture of everything.

The side characters are really fun and endearing also, especially Santi and Pat (she's soo sassy, I love her) and of course Maurice from All Tomorrow's Photos. I won't spoil anything but his scenes are amazing!! You will find yourself really invested in the whole group and what is going on in their lives.

Overall I loved this first entry into the series! It's like the origin story for The Dusty Brooms, and now I am definitely ready to see what happens next for the band, but of course especially for Ray and Gene!

Commotion and cheers surround them with everyone bursting at the exciting news, but Ray keeps his eyes on Gene. Gene, who's been with him since the beginning, who plays the most amazing blues guitar he's ever heard, who fires up his spirit like no other. Gene, who has the most beautiful hazel eyes he's ever seen...

First of all I want to say Santi is my love and I refuse to hear any bad things about him ever. Second of all, this book? Utter perfection. It has the best slow burn; the chemistry between Ray and Gene was diviiiiine. The characters are well fleshed out, even the side characters that pop in every once in a while, and I loved that! It made it feel like I was immersed in the world of The Dusty Brooms completely. From the very beginning I was hooked, following the humble beginnings of the band to their big stardom, and I couldn't put it down til I had finished it! It was so well written and developed, I didn't want it to end (thankfully there are going to be 2 more books to come!), and I am still thinking about it to this day. A truly amazing read for sure!

What To Expect:
⨳ MM Historical Romance
⨳ 1970's Rock'n'roll
⨳ Singer x Guitarist
⨳ Best Friends to Lovers
⨳ Slow Burn
⨳ Cheating (With Each Other)

Gene knows that what they have is something special. As each other's closest friend, their connection is something they share with no one else. Two peas in a pod. Two young men with a sympathy for the blues, a love for music that holds them together, tighter than even their physical embrace. Ray belongs to Gene in a way he can't even describe...

I received an ARC from the author. Thank you!

This is a very engrossing story about two friends who wind up starting a band in the 1970s, start achieving more fame than they’d expected, and start wondering “hmm, why do I want to kiss my best friend 🤔 it’s such a mystery.”

It is the slowest of slowburns, and I wanted to shove Ray and Gene into a closet to work out their feelings because AAAAAUGH, but at the same time, you can understand how they’d be afraid to, given 70s era homophobia.

I will definitely be looking forward to the rest of the books in this trilogy because I gotta know how things turn out!

Once again, thank you to the author for providing me with this ARC!

SYMPATHY FOR THE BLUES is a classic story of sex, drugs, and rock and roll with a tense romance eager to burst just below the surface, not unlike the mounting crescendo of the novel's numerous ballads. Equal parts romance, historical fiction, and an ode to music history, SYMPATHY is told through an undeniably raw and informed lens, all while keeping you on the edge of your seat as The Dusty Brooms sweep their way to stardom — all while stumbling and falling (perhaps in love) along the way! ✨🎸

Alright, here’s my honest review. First off, prepare yourself for a ton of exposition in the early chapters. Seriously, the book spends so much time setting the scene and explaining background stuff that it’s tough to find your footing in the actual story.

It’s written in the third person, and there were moments when I honestly wasn’t sure whose point of view I was supposed to be reading, which made everything feel a bit muddled.

The writing style is definitely quirky; sometimes it felt like I went back in time 20 years and stumbled into the confines of Livejournal’s band fanfiction, and that threw me off more than once. You’ll get every classic cliché imaginable from the ’70s: sex, drugs, cheating, backstage drama, you name it. Not going to lie, that could have been kind of fun in small doses, but it does get old pretty fast.

One thing that really slowed me down was the characters’ inner monologue. Honestly, it was a little exhausting. The way it’s written just interrupts the flow; I kept wishing the book was written in the first person so I could get a break from all the “italicized” introspection. Just give me an entire chapter narrated from a character’s point of view, it’s cleaner and easier to follow. Because of this, I struggled to connect with any of the characters, and the plot just didn’t click for me.

On the flip side, I want to give props to the author for trying something a bit different. It’s not your typical rock or love history, and the idea is genuinely refreshing. I just wish the execution matched the concept. I mean, I’m a huge fan of classic rock, so I went in with high hopes, but I ended up feeling pretty let down.

And as a heads-up, the ending isn’t your standard happily ever after. The story is supposed to continue, so the conflict is not resolved, and the feelings are still unclear. Slow burn in this case is an understatement. Personally, I feel like I’ve reached my limit with Gene and Ray. If you’re looking for closure, though, apparently you will find it in the next book, “Tumbling Hearts.”

All in all, it’s got an interesting premise and some wild moments, but for me, it missed the mark. If you love classic rock enough to see past some flaws, you might get something out of it.

4.5 🌟

Huge thank you to the author for the ARC.
I had the time of my life while reading this book.

It took me a minute to get into it ( only because I'm not used to historical stories ), but once I was there, I couldn't stop.

Friends to lovers is my favorite thing, so OF COURSE I was hyped.
Also loved the cheating trope ( sorrynotsorry ).
Rock'n'Roll ? Count me in.
🎸
If there's one thing about this book, is that my patience is getting tested.
Don't underestimate the slow-burning of the romance; it's not for the weak. 🙃
I love and hate the fact that it is a trilogy, because hell yes, we're getting tons and tons of them, but also, can they get their happy ending already? 😂

Ray and Gene's chemistry is wild. I love embarking on this journey with them; their meeting, the formation and evolution of the band, and discovering themselves.
Even tho sometimes I just want to shake them both, like please stop being idiots and COMMUNICATE! 😂( At the same time, it's the 70s, so their way of handling their feelings for each other is completely understandable... )
But when they do indulge in their need tho? Let's just say the spice is here and it's hot🌶️🔥 ( & touching, because they love each other so much 🥹).

Also, Santi and Maurice? I loved them, and I'm so glad Ray and Gene have them in their lives. 🫂

Once again, thank you to the author. 🫶🏻

I can't wait to go back on the road with the Dusty Brooms! 🎤

This book is an absolute gem! Whether you’re a romance reader or not, you’ll enjoy this story if you’re passionate about music as I am. The author put all their love for the ‘70s rock scene on page and it shows.

From the music references to the reality of the ‘70s (yes, including the bad stuff, because it’s historically accurate and I LOVE the accuracy), this book is a vivid journey I deeply loved. The concert scenes are so beautifully written they feel real, the characters so humanly flawed that I felt like I was physically following a real life band through their rise to fame.

The romantic part was fantastic and contained the perfect amount of passion, jealousy, angst, and pining romance readers will adore. It’s realistic and impacted by the ‘70s mentality throughout the whole book.
Ray and Gene are not perfect. Nobody is, and that’s another aspect that made me love this story so much.

A rock concert in book form, this book is wild in the best way possible. Check out the content warnings before you read because as I said, it’s historically accurate and nobody is innocent.

Last but not least: Santiago. I love my boy Santi with all my heart and I wished he was my friend in real life as I read. I’m ready to fight ANYONE who criticizes Santiago.

It’s book 1 of The Dusty Brooms and I can’t wait to read more!

Absolutely adored this book 🩷

The author did a fantastic job of capturing the essence of the 1970s, and their knowledge of the history of rock n’ roll truly shows. I especially loved the illustrations laced throughout the book. As a Michigander myself, I also appreciated how well the settings and specific locations were described.

Even though it’s a slooooooooow burn, the tension and love between them as best friends is so prominent. I can’t wait to read the next part of this trilogy!

Books with bands will always get my attention and I was interested to see Ray and Gene’s story. They become immediate friends who enjoy music together and it’s not long before they form a band with Ray as the lead singer and Gene on guitar. Their friendship is intense and they enjoy spending all of their time together. But there are expectations on musicians and Ray soon finds many women to keep him company. Still, Ray and Gene spend a lot of time together writing music and touring and they always seem to want more from each other, with no idea how to achieve that.

Ray and Gene’s story is a slow burn, with this book ending on a to be continued note, and I liked their story enough to want to continue on and can keep my expectations in check.

This is a lively, endearing and nostalgic romp through the 1970s midwest music scene. As someone who grew up in the 70s myself, I enjoyed the vibe and appreciated all the attention to detail. Gene and Ray are best friends who bond over their love of rock music and can't escape their mutual attraction. The constant push-pull dynamic leads to destructive behaviour and patterns that threaten their friendship and the band's success. This first volume captures the innocence and excitement of forming a band and catching fire -- the tours, shows, groupies, and thrill of the crowds. But disaster looms on the horizon as the ongoing tension between the boys starts to spiral out of control. Can't wait for the next volume!

what i need now is for them to get their shit together and stop being idiots but there's two more books coming so I guess I will have to suffer for a while longer still 🤣

This is a historical (1970's) romance about two best friends and bandmates. This is a super slow burn, and is the first in a trilogy. It definitely evoked a lot of emotions in me. It's almost gritty in it's authenticity and realness. I will absolutely be reading the next to books. Also? Santi is amazing.

Sympathy for the Blues is the first book in The Dusty Brooms trilogy, and I love it!! We get to meet Ray and Gene, who reunite after ten years when they both happen to be taking the same bus. Their connection is instant; they share the same deep love for music. Their chemistry is so strong that they decide to try forming a band together.
At first, it’s just the two of them and Ray’s brother, Mick. Later, they meet Santiago, followed by Pat and Stefan, and that’s how The Dusty Brooms was born. Their performances quickly start getting attention, and soon the band begins to rise in fame. It’s a dream come true for Gene and Ray, they’re doing what they love most: writing and creating music together.
Except… they’re also starting to feel a forbidden attraction toward each other. They both know it’s wrong; they can’t feel this way. There’s so much at stake. But maybe… if no one finds out?
These two are the definition of soulmates. God, I love them, even though they frustrated me sometimes, I can’t blame them. That’s exactly what kept me turning the pages! Their chemistry is absolutely overflowing. No matter how much they try to ignore it, their hearts and bodies can’t stay apart for long.
And the slow burn, ugh, I love it. It’s constant pining, constant flirting, and I have to be honest, I was giggling every time Ray or Gene got jealous. Plus, the things they say to each other are so sweet they’ll make you scream.
The story is really entertaining. Since it’s the first book, we get to see how the band formed, meet all the members, and learn about their beginnings. All the band members are interesting, especially Stefan, even though he’s quiet most of the time. And I adore Maurice and Santiago for helping these two stubborn besties when they need it most. I’m so excited for the next book because yeah, these two still have a long road ahead and it’s very likely we’ll suffer, but I’m totally here for that. LOL.

PLEASE CHECK THE TRIGGER WARNINGS.

I absolutely adore Sympathy for the Blues, the debut novel in The Dusty Brooms trilogy. Ray and Gene are introduced to us; they reconnect after a decade when they happen to be on the same bus. Because they both have an intense passion for music, they hit it off right away. They think of trying to establish a band together because of how strongly their chemistry is. Initially, it's merely the two of them plus Mick, Ray's brother. Santiago, Pat, and Stefan all show up later on, and that's how The Dusty Brooms came to be. As word gets out about their performances, the band's star starts to increase. For Gene and Ray, it's an absolute blessing since they're finally able to pursue their passion: making music together. However, they are also beginning to have an illicit attraction to one another. They need to stop feeling this way since they know it's wrong. Everything is riding on this. Perhaps, perhaps, if nobody discovers? Soulmates are exemplified by these two. Even if they irritated me at times, I adore them anyway. I couldn't put the book down because of that! The chemistry between them is immense. Their hearts and bodies are inseparable, no of how hard they want to deny it. The gradual burn is my favorite part, too. I'll admit that I couldn't help but laugh every time Ray or Gene became envious; it's like a never-ending cycle of pining and flirting. And their back-and-forth is so adorable it will make you want to cry. This is a hilarious tale. Given that this is the first book in the series, we are introduced to the band members and hear their origin stories, as well as how the band came to be. Although he remains silent for the most part, Stefan—like all of the band members—is fascinating. I really admire Maurice and Santiago for coming to the aid of these two defiant closest friends at a critical juncture. Yes, these two still have a ways to go, and I fully expect that we will endure hardship together in the next book, but I couldn't be more eager. I received an advance review copy from GRR and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Note: I was provided with an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Sympathy for the Blues is the first book in a trilogy of historical romance novels that take place in the 1970s. It concerns the rise of the (fictional) Detroit-based blues rock band The Dusty Brooms and the romantic tension between guitarist Gene Hillard and singer Ray Roderick.
There’s a lot to like about this book! I’m a pretty avid reader of achillean romance novels, both self-published and trad published, and I can’t say I’ve seen any others with this setting. As a huge classic rock fan, it’s really clear how much Genesee both loves the subject matter and is involved with the community.
Unfortunately, I feel like this book did far too much setup with very little payoff. The first 7 or so chapters skip around in time so much that it’s really hard to settle into a specific scene and be present with the characters. However, once the band gets signed and starts touring, things slow down to the point where character’s actions start to feel clear and impactful. I think this would be fine for a prologue or a couple early chapters, but it kind of drags after a while. My other major quibble is that Ray and Gene both narrate, but it can be difficult to tell who is who. They both have very similar narrative voices and opinions on things. I know they’re best friends, but I wish they had bigger, more distinct personalities to keep them from mushing together so much.
Either way, though, I really really enjoyed this book. Since the Goodreads Gods demand numerical scores, I give it 3 out of 5 stars and I am looking forward to the next book in the trilogy!

Sympathy for the Blues is the first book in the Dusty Brooms series from S.S. Genesee, who is a new-to-me author. Set in the 70s, this series starter introduces readers to Ray Roderick and Gene Hillard, best friends in their early twenties who happen to have formed a band called The Dusty Brooms. They're making a name for themselves while making beautiful music together along with the third member of the group in their hometown of Michigan. Ray and Gene share a bond that can never be broken...but soon, that bond comes under threat from feelings that neither of them can act on. Not if they want The Dusty Brooms to continue to succeed. Not if they want to keep their friendship intact, especially considering neither one has any idea that those "feelings" are actually rather mutual.

I love a slow burn read, and this book was slooooow buuuuurn to the max. For the record, Ray and Gene's story plays out throughout the entire series, which is a trilogy. I'm saying that because at the end of this first book, it's clear that these two main characters still have a lot of story to tell, and the title of the third book has their names in it...so yeah, that's how I did my whole deducing thing. As far as how the book was, I have a thing for historical fiction, and S.S. Genesee did not disappoint, coming up with main characters you hope will get their act together and make their way towards their happily-ever-after. There are complications, of course, and while we don't get that HEA by the end of this first book, I'm liking the journey so far, which is why I'm looking forward to book two. 4.5 stars for Sympathy for the Blues.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review. As with any book, please check the trigger warning.

I really enjoyed this book! It is the 1st in a series, which gives me a small bit of hope for Gene and Ray!
I really liked reading how the band got started and getting to know them.
Having read All Tomorrow's Photos and All Yesterday's Papers I caught the reference before Maurice showed up! Having him and Kenneth show up was a delightful surprise! Makes it feel like a shared universe.
Though it is not required to read All Tomorrow's Photos and All Yesterday's Papers before this book to understand the story. Though I'd recommend reading them after just to learn more about Maurice and Kenneth.
My favorite new character is Gene I really liked him to the point I cried for him at one point!
I adore how close Gene and Ray are, yet I just feel frustrated at times.
I actually forgot I was reading fiction as it seemed so really at times.
At times it kind of felt like VH1 Behind the Music documenting the band. At times it felt like doomed yaoi. At times it felt like stereotypical band trope with girls and drugs.
The book goes by quickly as its so engaging and I'm very excited for the next book.
My hope for the next book is Carol doesn't return from her modeling. I'm sorry I just don't like her.
While my hope for Gene and Ray is small, I will be rooting for them!

If you enjoyed Daisy Jones and the Six, you'll LOVE Sympathy for the Blues! You don't neccessarily have to be a fan of any of the great rock' n' roll musicians this book was inspired by to have a great time reading it because this story is entirely captivating on its own.

From the first page, I was immersed in the story focusing on Ray and Gene which is set in 70s Michigan. Due to their love for blues and rock' n' roll music, they don't only form a deep connection with each other but also their very own band, the Dusty Brooms.

This book follows their rise from a small town band to fame, and as they get drawn deeper into the typical rock' n' roll lifestyle, Ray and Gene's feelings for each other also deepen.

If you're looking for a book featuring a rock' n' roll band, including their struggles to start out, their song-writing and recording sessions, as well as getting to open for big name acts and going on their first tours, Sympathy for the Blues will be the right read for you. Sprinkle in some sex and drugs (cause they belong with rock' n' roll) and a sweet slow burn love story slowly unfolding between Ray and Gene that needs to be kept secret and leads to loads of pining and angst, and you have an extraordinary read that's totally worth checking out.

I alpha/beta read this book and it was a total pleasure to be one of the first people getting to read this wonderful story.

I am somebody that grew up probably singing Aerosmith and the Stones at the same time as Barney so I am absolutely obsessed with the concept of this book. Plus the cover art? It's absolutely amazing! Luckily, the story also lived up to everything I wanted it to be.

This is a slooooww burn. Like, I thought each book of the trilogy was going to be a different band member focus, but we have not reached Gene and Ray's HEA, so if you're looking for a book that gets hot and heavy fast, look away. But that makes this just so true to the time. You can feel the fear, the suppression, but most of all the yearning between these two that really does transport you back to the 1970's, especially paired with the classics: sex, drugs, and rock n'roll. This book is a great foundation. I know Gene and Ray so well, and have seen the Dusty Brooms since their inception, which means I am so eager to see what happens next! It's not all slow and yearning either, we do get some steamy moments between the two, but it's definitely still up in the air at this point.

I need the next book ASAP. Plus more of the beautiful art throughout the book!

I had the opportunity to beta read this book and I was utterly blown away!

Like a wonderful biopic for a fictional band, S.S. Genesee captures the era and the exciting nature of rock and roll with fantastic prose and vibrant characters. From wonderfully interior moments to banger stage performances, this book will have you wishing you could buy The Dusty Brooms debut album and rock out right alongside them. Pair that with a fantastic romance and you have a recipe for a book that had me begging to know what comes next!

This is going to be one fantastic series. The author has taken me back to the 1970s and immersed me in the development of the Dusty Brooms from founding to success. The chemistry - musical, friendship and the desire for more between Ray and Gene is off the charts and the slow burn of neither of them quite believing the other can feel the same keeps the tension simmering wonderfully.
