i'm pretty sure this volume will end on chapter 158 and if that's the case... holy shit what an ending. first things first tho, i LOVE RINTARO'S PARENTS SO MUCH!!! their chapters were so wholesome and seeing how they met and how their relationship grew into what it is in the present made me cry a little. they're just perfect <3 and the ending... dang. let me fight that kikyo teacher
Saku and Subaru are going to the same university... Yes, yes, yes! 😆
I already loved Rintaro’s parents, but after this volume, I love them even more ❤️.
Now I’m all caught up with the released volumes! I’ll read the remaining chapters soon (there are about 12 left) and add them once the new volumes are out. Then comes the agony of waiting for new chapters every week, or longer 😫. Hopefully, I can stay committed and not abandon the manga midway, because I’m really enjoying it 🤞🏼🥲.
As an avid romance and slice-of-life manga reader, for me, it's refreshing the way Saka Mikami tells this story.
This manga is heartfelt, comforting and inspiring. I am so happy it doesn't rely on the miscommunication trope to create drama. The struggles happen due to very common life circumstances, and the characters are constantly open to conversations when they are ready to have them.
It tells the story of our protagonists and their romance, yes, but also the people around them. We learn that it is through our relationships and community that we, as humans, are able to grow and become the best versions of ourselves each day. What's surprised me the most is that parents and siblings are not a second thought in this story; they are also key to exploring the inner world of the characters.
I also thoroughly enjoy the POV jumps in different chapters. It allows to explain different circumstances of the emotions a person may be going through. Not everything happens to the main characters, sometimes we need a different POV to understand the different circumstances of a situation.
That on the story side, on the art side...man, the panels and, particularly, the full pages are something else. I found this manga through the anime adaptation, and I understand that when it comes to anime, there are certain stylistic choices the directors and studios have to make to translate it into the format, but for this manga, I think it was the other way around. The manga really knows when to emphasize crucial moments, when to reveal characters, and it is the anime that translates that original feeling of the paper onto the screen.
All in all to say, I highly recommend this one for a refreshing take on romance. Just a warning: you will want to eat cake like 24/7.
I really loved how it started with Rintaro opening up about his worries over his internship and future career at the patisserie. Seeing him be vulnerable like that and Kaoruko stepping in to comfort him, was such a full-circle moment. She even said how happy she was that it was finally her turn to cheer him up this time and that honestly melted me.
And then that scene where Rintaro got accepted and literally sprinted back to Chidori to tell his homeroom teacher? That was so wholesome I almost teared up. The way his teacher got emotional too, so proud of him, it perfectly captured what makes Rintaro who he is. He’s always been so humble and genuine and seeing him share that joy with someone who believed in him just hit deep.
Later, when Lucas, the owner of the patisserie, visited Rintaro’s family bakery, that whole exchange felt so warm and sincere. Hearing Lucas praise Rintaro not just for his baking skills but for his attitude and the way he lightens the workload for others was beautiful. You could tell he wasn’t just hiring talent, he was welcoming a genuinely good person. And when Rintaro’s parents told him to treat their son like everyone else in the kitchen, trusting that experience would help him grow, that honestly got me.
But the part that absolutely stole my heart was the flashback to Rintaro’s parents in high school. They were so adorable together! The dynamic between them reminded me so much of Rintaro and Kaoruko, the calm, composed guy paired with the bright, sunshine-y girl. Seeing his parents’ younger days made everything click like, of course Rintaro turned out the way he did. He grew up surrounded by that kind of warmth and love.
Kaoruko and Rintaro are earnest, love struck teens in this ongoing manga that has some classical R+J vibes. They attend neighbouring single sex schools with concrete but wildly inaccurate reputations, Kikyo for smart girls with noble backgrounds, Chidori for supposedly delinquent boys. Of course that’s a load of rubbish, the girls have been brainwashed by their teachers to hate and fear the Chidori boys, who in turn seethe at the mean treatment they receive from the girls, prompting their verbal aggression and demoralisation.
The two leads meet away from school and have no idea they attend these schools. Their affection for each other grows as they blossom under each other’s interest, trust and curiosity. The manga focuses on their relationship and the growing friendship group as it expands beyond the leads to 3 Kikyo girls and 4 Chidori boys.
At this point we have had a deep dive into everyone's backstories and are developing hope that Saku and Subaro will grow closer still, now that their uni decisions are on the same track. Now for the clash between schools, can they reach a better understanding?
I’m so happy we got to see Rintaro’s parents when they were in high school and seeing the beginning of their relationship 😊 I also loved the mirroring of Rintaro’s dad wanting to improve his baking because he wanted to make Rintaro’s mother smile, then Rintaro wanting to do the same for Kaoruko 🥰 And they finally got to celebrate their anniversary at the festival 🙌
