The second book in this series dives even deeper into the lives of its damaged, complex characters. What surprised me most was how the intense and explicit encounters between the main characters began to make sense within the context of their emotional journeys. Often, books use sexual encounters as a mere hook and risk overdoing it, but here, the dynamic between the dominant and submissive roles is explored with nuance and depth. The author skillfully portrays how trust can transform such a relationship into something liberating and meaningful. The narrative made me understand and respect a type of connection I hadn’t considered before, especially for those who find fulfillment in these dynamics.
The story continues into a third book, and while I find myself missing the comfort of a classic happily-ever-after, I can’t help but be drawn in by the angst and emotional intensity. This series is a compelling, thought-provoking read that lingers long after you turn the last page.

Book 2 in this series dives a little deeper into the dark and mysterious background and secrets of the main characters. The spice also kicks up another notch.
While we find out who the mysterious stalker from book 1 is, we're left with another mysterious character at the end of book 2, who is also bent on ruining the FMC Emerson's reputation.
I enjoyed getting to find out a bit more about Emersons Father (and a glimpse about her Mother) through the letters she reads in this book. Slowly we are seeing more depth and an unraveling of the primary characters.

“Pursued at Night” is book two in the At Night series written by Harlow Brígh. This historical romance continued on with the romantic dance between Lathen and Emerson. I’m glad the author did a bit of a recap at the beginning of this book as I had read several books in between book one and book two. It was a good reminder of how book one left off. I definitely liked how the heat and spice are amped up in book two as Emerson begins to come to terms with her needs and desires. I also was glad that Lathen was beginning to understand Emerson and to take into consideration Emerson as a whole person. I wanted to know more information about Noir and how it came into Lathen’s care, thankfully, the author touched on this. It is such an intriguing place, I hope more scenes are in that mysterious underground lair. There is also Emerson’s stalker lurking through the pages, reminding the reader that he is still a threat to Emerson’s well being. Ms. Brígh did a great job of keeping him hidden. I liked Hazel a lot more in this part of the trilogy. I was glad that she took more of an active role in protecting her best friend. The author has done a great job with this ongoing story. The two main characters have so much chemistry together, they are easy to root for. Things aren’t stagnant between Lathen and Emerson, they continue to change and grow as the story progresses. Yes, there is some darkness and edge but it is handled well within the story. Of course I’m going to read book three in this trilogy, how could I not?

This second book in the series was amazing and absolutely did not disappoint. It was just as strong as book one and a seamless continuation of Emerson and Lathen’s love story. Darkish, romantic, and deliciously spicy, this Victorian-era tale leans fully into its moody atmosphere while keeping the emotional stakes high. From the very first chapters, it kept me guessing all the way until the end, layering in suspense, tension, and twists that never felt forced.
Hazel truly shines in this installment—she’s an absolute badass, stepping into her strength in a way that made her impossible not to root for. And then there’s that plot twist. The kind you don’t see coming at all. I had multiple theories, ruled them out one by one, and still wasn’t prepared for how unhinged things would become. I was both surprised and impressed by how it all unfolded. One character I thought was dull & drab surprised me in the end. Reminding me to always root for the underdog.
The tension between Emerson and Lathen only intensifies here, and the spice level definitely turns up the heat. At the same time, the story begins to build friction with other characters, opening doors I didn’t expect. After the final scenes, I can’t say I’m fully sold on certain possibilities—but I am intrigued, and that curiosity is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. There’s some side plots happening that I hope bloom in book 3.
Now… the ending. Book two does end on a cliffhanger, and I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, Emerson and Lathen fought so hard to reach the place they’re in, and part of me wanted to savor that. On the other hand, the way this book ends left me completely invested and desperate to know what happens next. It’s clear the story isn’t over yet—and after that final moment, I’m more than ready for book three.

Harlow Brigh has managed to create a Historical Romance the lands on the darkside of desire and intrigue without feeling cheap or trashy. She has really taken the time to develope the characters so that their backgrounds match their current actions which lends credibility to their responses to their situations. She also does a great job with pacing. There was a flow that left me feeling exilerated. The lovely dark romantic scenes were well described in a way that did not make me cringe. Those scenes also felt deliberate and not rushed. The flow from one caress to the next was flawless. Also, the pacing is helped along by changing pov's throughout the book. This allows the reader to get to know the side characters which add depth to the story.
My only negatives are I didn't like how the recap of the first book happened in the beginning of the book. It was one big summary that felt like a narrator monologue and didn't fit into the story. I felt that could have been handeled with more skill by embedding bits and pieces throughout the first few chapters. My other negative is the ending. I feel like the story should have ended as a duology. The last chapter feels forced and not apart of the original story. I cannot wait for the third book and I hope I am proven wrong!

First, let me say that I enjoyed book two more than book one. Secondly, let me cheat a bit and repost most of my review of book one.
Before I downloaded this book, I read that the author describes her work as “darkish”. That’s an appropriate word… if darkish is a word. I have to confess that the book was not my “cup of tea”, but if darkish sexual fantasy is yours, this is a well written, engaging novel with expertly drawn characters and a compelling story line. Thus, my rating. I did not find the book offensive or distasteful, quite the contrary. I was invested in the main characters finding their happy ending. I’m just not into darkish. I was , however, entertained by the story and went on to read book two as this book is pretty much a cliffhanger. If this author has other books not so darkish, I will gladly read them with the anticipation of a finding a well penned tale.

I loved this book. Again, you get to experience the "Bridgerton-esqe" setting with a slightly darker story, this time with a bit of a thriller element.
This book continues Emerson and Lathen's romance. You are watching the two of them struggle with what they really want while learning of someone lurking in the dark in desire of Emerson.
As last time, the characters are beautifully written and the story line is wonderful. This author is really good with the historical perspective and it makes the whole story so believable. My only complaint is that I believe the thriller element could have been pulled into the story even more, but I'll be honest I was impressed that I was left guessing all the way until the end. I typically can figure out who the bad guy is relatively fast, but I was unable to do that.

Ok, so introduction of a stalker at the end of the first book was a surprise. And it continued throughout this one. I had three characters I was considering initially and then I kept ruling them out as it went along. I was both surprised and not at who it ended up being, but dang I didn't see how unhinged he would be coming.
The tension only grows between Emerson and Lathen, the spice gets hotter! We have tension building with other characters and after a few final scenes I can't say I'm opposed to the idea of another character stepping in…..not sold, but intrigued. The ending on this has me ready for book 3, it isn't over yet!

Emerson's and Lathan De Clare's story is very well written and their forbidden love is the stuff of romance novels. With a stalker on the loose and danger lurking around every corner, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. So, grab a cup of coffee, get cozy, and settle in for a wild ride with this historic romance! Harlow Brigh is definitely an author to watch, trust me - 5 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ all the way!

Emerson and Lathen's affair/connection continues in quite a memorable way. But that's getting ahead of myself and the story. Lol. Lathen is not alone in his desires to have Lady Emerson. There is some villain with evil machinations who kidnaps his prize. Will Lathen be the true hero of Em and this story? It's a nail biter, page turner, edge of your seat read. Great followup book! More surprises to come , and they're not fraught with good intentions. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest review.

The second of the series contained even more twists and turns than the first. Only at the very end was the true villain shown, with scenes of brutality and insanity. Again, there were many examples sexual extremes, most of them welcomed. A new mystery character emerged in the final pages, on,y be reading book 3 will her identity be known.

March 18, 2026I LITERALLY could not put this one down!! I thought book one was good, but this one? Tops the freaking cake!! I was genuinely surprised at finding out who the Stalker was, I did NOT see that coming at all! You can really see the tension between Emerson & Lathen in this one and I am all sorts of excited!!

I stayed up all night to read this one when it came out. It is def darker than the first one, but I really like that. The spice is spicier, but not too much. Its well thought out and not just for the gratuitous stuff, if that makes sense. I will say it was a gut punch to know i now have to wait to see what happens! Ugh book 3 needs to be out NOW!

Wow, just wow! Book two really had me on my toes!! I’m well invested in the characters and have loved watching them all grow while learning about life in the ton. A beautiful mix of dark(ish) romance and the Victorian era. Be ready for the cliff hanger at the end, and a lack of sleep from devouring every last chapter!

Leaving me always wanting more

This book was great! It really turned up the heat on Lathen and Emerson's story. I was pretty sure I knew who the stalker was the whole time, but it turned out I was wrong. I can't wait for the next one!
