She ran to protect him. Now she's back to face what they both lost.
Kennedy Reynolds has spent the last decade on the move, chasing freedom and hiding from a past she couldn’t outrun. But when the woman who took her in—and made her part of a makeshift family—dies unexpectedly, Kennedy is called home to Eden’s Ridge. There, she’s reunited with her estranged sisters… and the man whose heart she shattered.
Xander Kincaid never understood why Kennedy disappeared after graduation without a word. She was his best friend, his first love, his future—until she vanished. Now she’s back, older, guarded, and still beautiful as hell. He tells himself he’s moved on. But the moment he sees her, old feelings come rushing back.
With grief stirring up old memories, and a foster child’s future hanging in the balance, Kennedy must decide: can she finally stop running and make peace with her past? Or is the future she once wanted already too far gone?
Heartfelt, deeply emotional, and brimming with southern charm, When You Got A Good Thing is a poignant tale of family, forgiveness, and finding your way home—even when the path is tangled with regret and love that never faded.
Kait Nolan is a RITA® Award-winning Mississippi author who calls everyone sugar, honey, or darlin', and can wield a 'Bless your heart' like a Snuggie or a saber, depending on requirements. She believes in love, laughter, and that tacos are the world's most perfect food. When she's not writing, reading, working the evil day job, or wrangling family (both the two-legged and the four-), you can find her obsessively watching The Great British Bake Off.
“Wildflowers are pretty amazing things, actually. They look all soft and delicate, but they’re actually surprisingly tough. They grow and bloom where they’re planted, no matter the conditions. You’ve done that all your life, wherever you landed. And I picked this one because it symbolizes an open heart, because it grows here, where you gave me yours.”
Kennedy Reynolds, bohemian, chaser of the exotic and challenger of permanence has been wandering the world on feet heavily laden with regret. The best way to outrun any problem? Run the globe in search of the novel. But a call revealing her mother’s death has Kennedy crossing seas home to Eden’s Ridge after a decade’s worth of voyaging. For Xander Kincaid, his teenage love showing face after years unsaid has him adamant for answers from the light-minded, fickle girl who dropped him and ran… and to Xander, the truth is worth more than any nugget of gold. After years apart, Kennedy comes home to the shortcomings that have never left her and the reality she abandoned, all the more pronounced by burning bridges, fractured relationships and long-held grudges. Kennedy’s presence doesn’t inspire longevity or faith, and because of that she’s keen to piece together the subdued, delicate bonds she snapped, in the name of love, family and a generous saint of devotion known who cultivated the Misfit Inn, shaping the lives of all who had come and gone in a well-loved foster home.
It’s a shame that Kennedy’s sisters didn’t know her well enough to offer her any courtesies, or even to see past the face of appearances. Considering their shared upbringing in being fosters, I’d have thought they’d be more empathetic to Kennedy’s nature, and hence her choices. I can understand all viewpoints here, but what with all of them sure to have their own arsenal of problems since childhood, It’s equally a shame that she has to prove her merit to her sisters. All in all a sweet romance with charm, a good helping of nostalgia and the regret of mistakes that can’t be undone paralleling with a protagonist that direly whispers for the acceptance that holds purchase to make or break. A lie that scattered the cards of hope to land where they may and a mistake that calls regret to this day.
It’s a saluted change of stride to read about a hero who doesn’t care for the hollow appeals of empty love-making. Xander is charming and affectionate, but the romance was definitely underwhelming for me, with a story that was missing a special gravitas. The impressions of faith and belief can go a long way in feeling accepted, and for Kennedy, at the root of it, this fear, this sadness, this pain comes from the down roads of bad faith; of never feeling good enough. A fear of breach that ran deep enough it cut through any good conviction that she was ever enough, and I’m glad she gets her happy ending with the well-meaning belief from her family. Oh dear, i have to be honest and say that this, comprehensively, was a story that left me wanting in a way that didn’t sate.
T R I G G E R. W A R N I N G:Not heavy in the swearing department but there is some swearing. One love scene - though a mild one, and the story mentions a past miscarriage.

Not a enjoyable read. I am confuse with the theme of this book. The characters are very poorly develop. There is minimum conversation between Xander and Kennedy. And when they do talk, the conversation is so cheesy, stiff and predictable. There is no layer on the plot. Everyone seems to live in HEA cute place and only Kennedy feeling sorry for herself.
The reason why Kennedy running away from Xander abruptly is so stupid and cheesy. I need more complicated reason, more complex plot and twist. But this book has none.
I grabbed this book as a freebie without reading the blurb or anything. Then I was looking for something to read and checked out the reviews for this one and they were pretty much all great, so I dove right in.
The reviews were right. This book was really good. More than just a romance, it’s a story of family, forgiveness and moving forward. I loved seeing these for foster-turned-adoptee sisters reunite and help with the newest foster, Ari. Even though I hate why they had to come together. I
As for the romance, I really loved Xander and Kennedy together and loved that there were roadblocks and stumbles but that they never denied how much they never stopped loving each other. Xander was this perfect blend of alpha, not afraid to stand up to his family and Kennedy’s but with a real soft side for Kennedy.
I’m absolutely going to be reading the rest of the books in this series AND I found a new author to Fangirl over!
Is the writing fabulous? Not really. Are the characters very developed? Not really. Was the story predictable? Yes. Do I care? Nope. This story made me smile. It made my heart warm. The story did what I needed it to.
Although the title is not grammatically correct, the sisters’ relationship needed more depth, and the story felt rushed, I liked it. I liked that the main characters didn’t run from their feelings but allowed themselves a chance. I liked all of the characters in the story. I liked trying to figure out which sister would fall for which guy and which secondary character would fall for another secondary character.
This story felt very much Penny Reid’s series about the Winston brothers, but I love that series, so it was okay.
Although I’ve collected a number of Kait Nolan books over the years, this is the first one I’ve read. I was impressed and I want to read more from this author.
Kennedy, our heroine has been a world traveller for a while now, kind of a nomad, working enough to keep going. But she’s called home when her adopted mother dies. She was a foster kid, adopted by her foster mom. She has 3 other sisters, young women who have become sisters the same way, adoption. They hold harsh feelings toward Kennedy, feeling she abandoned them. But now she’s determined to remain in their small town and prove she can be depended on.
But staying means facing Xander, her high school sweetheart, without any notice. Xander is hurt and feels betrayed by Kennedy’s actions but he’s never gotten over her. And she has never gotten over him either so it’s not long before those feelings come rushing back. But before they can start over, Kennedy has to come clean on why she left and didn’t return.
I thought both Kennedy and Xander very well done characters. At the time, Kennedy thought she had no choice but to leave and is now experiencing a great deal of regret at not seeing her mother. And she has the resentment of her sisters to deal with. One in particular is very hostile.
And Xander is a heroine who loved Kennedy so much he was willing to travel and explore with her but he never had the chance. Instead he remained, became a deputy and worked with his father, the sherif.
This is the Instagram book in a series and I picked up the next book as I want more from this author. So yes, I recommend this book and I’m ever so glad I found and read this author, even if it did take a while between step one and step two.
Small town second chance romance between Kennedy and Xander. The lengths parents will go to, to not have to let go of their children. How that spirals and affects everyone involved eventually. Coming home. New beginnings. I think this was a really well told story. Enjoyed the small town charm. Using what you’ve learned while out in the world to make change. The idea of ‘home’
I downloaded this an audio book and it was wonderful from the first pull on the tap in Ireland to the very last sentence. I cried, laughed and cheered the sisters on waiting for the HEA and I got it- can't wait for book 2 with Pru in the spotlight.
This book was okay. I was disappointed by a couple of aspects of the book. It’s my first time reading this author. There’s “a letter to readers” in the front of the book about how there’s “colorful” language and “pre-marital sex” and if you don’t like that, she gives a link to some “sweeter” romances. Except for one sex scene with one nasty word, this book was very tame. (I found it odd that the author could use the word “folds” 🤢🤮 in reference to Kennedy, but she used the word “sheath” instead of condom. Like condom is a bad word. 🙄) Personally, I like my romances a bit spicier than this was. This was borderline “clean” romance in my opinion and I don’t like those.
Kennedy has been traveling the world for 10 years. She left home suddenly the night after graduation and no one knew why she left. Apparently, her sisters (two of them anyway) have been harboring a lot of anger toward her. They didn’t hold back on the hate they spewed at her when she returned for their mother’s funeral. Seriously? Kennedy’s sister Pru was the only nice sister and she was sweet.
Once Kennedy’s big secret of why she left is finally revealed, the two nasty sisters kind of forgive her. But it isn’t until the last chapter that everything gets resolved. That left the first half of the book d-r-a-g-g-i-n-g!
I did like the MMC, Xander, but everyone felt kind of two dimensional. We didn’t get enough description to be able to picture them in my mind. There were a couple of emotional points toward the end, but the characters never felt really fleshed out for me. I was disappointed about that. This didn’t meet my expectations for the warm, small town feeling romance I was craving.
I am curious about Pru’s book, so I may pick that up if it ever comes to KU or is made free. This didn’t draw me in enough to convince me to spend money for it. There are other Kait Nolan books that I’ve picked up here and there for free, so I’ll give another one a try sometime.
Author's Direct (I think this must have been a freebie at some point, because I can't find any other books by Nolan on there.) ebook is available for free on Amazon.
This is my first book by Kait Nolan, but I *love* Amy McFadden as a narrator and haven't come across any of her work I didn't like. Both were amazing here.
This is a dual POV, small town, second chance romance, series opener. Kennedy & Xander are reunited due to a family tragedy and we get the rekindling of their relationship. What I especially loved is that while there was "a big secret" that caused Kennedy to leave Eden's Ridge in the first place ~ it's uncovered at about the 60% point and we aren't overly tortured with that as the only plot point. Nolan's worldbuilding is impeccable here. We get to know enough about Kennedy's sisters to anticipate the rest of the series, but in a way that doesn't overpower the main plot. Heads up: You'll probably need a box of Kleenex with this one.
Amy McFadden is fantastic as always. Her ability to give all the characters their own unique voices and keep the southern accents in tact without being overdone is phenomenal. It was never a guess as to who was speaking and chapters from Xander's POV were distinct.
Wasn’t bad for a free read but the whole plot was just too trite and annoying for me which was a pity. Found Kennedy too unbelievably forgiving and spineless by the end. The reasoning for Kennedy leaving was just too strange. Nobody would run off without talking to one of their family members and the fact Kennedy could believe any charges would stick, was put down to her young age. Kennedy lost 10 years with her mother and sisters and just forgives Buck with no recriminations or anger. Add in the fact that Xander has thought for 10 years that his behaviour scared Kennedy into leaving but it was his father’s doing. Then Xander and Kennedy both forgive Buck because he has a heart attack, is all remorseful and he apologises. Kennedy doesn’t even tell the truth of what happened when she gets back. Even with the interactions between the sisters which I enjoyed, I just couldn’t rate it higher.
This story had potential, but it was missing something. The characters didn’t develop enough for me and I had a hard time liking them.
Kennedy and Xander were high school sweethearts. She left abruptly after graduation with no explanation. Now she is back 10 years later only when her Mom passed away. Now she is home to stay, she is rebuilding relationships and they are finding their way back.
I really hoped I would enjoy this. The sisters are tough to like. Kennedy and Xander lost 10 years, but fell back together almost instantly and overall it made it all hard to relate to. This was a standalone, but part of a series about the Reynolds sisters. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
As this book was a freebie, I just kinda started reading it without actually knowing what it was about. They talked about a 'huge secret' in almost every chapter, so I was kinda intrigued as to what that big secret would be.
Safe to say: I was completely disappointed with it. And with the book overall, sadly. I really wanted to like it since I love a cheesy romance now and then, but I just really didn't. this book didn't have any depth imo.
Passion, compassion, forgiveness, family relearning to get along, all wrapped up in a small town community. Ms. Nolan captures so much without losing momentum. The story flows beautifully. No cliffhanger and you get a happy ending. Enjoy!
I'm so happy Kennedy & Xander got their happy ending 💕 Sexy, wholesome, & all around a great read. This story will definitely leave you wanting more. I can't wait to pick up book 2. 😊
This was a good, quick read. Even though it wasn't very long, I thought the author did a good job developing the characters and the plot. I got a good sense of who each sister was. I would definitely be interested in reading the rest of the books in the series.
Kennedy Reynolds leaves her hometown and the man she loves after being blackmailed by the sheriff who happens to be the father of Xander the man she loves and her childhood sweetheart. Fast forward 10 years, tragedy strikes and she has been robbed out of time with her siblings through fear of ever returning. She held that secret tight to her heart. On her return she reconnects with Xander and sets about making things right. Throw in sibling rivalries, misunderstandings and romance with touches of sexual content, this was a very easy read
rcvd an advanced reader copy for voluntarily providing a review. i love kait's book and this one doesn't disappoint. we meet wandered kennedy bartending in ireland when she gets devastating news that her mom died. on top of that kennedy hasnt been home for 10 years and not sure what to do about it. seeing her sisters and Xander plus facing the truths from her past. Xander, a deputy us saddening my joans death and is not sure how to feel when he learns kennedy is coming home after 10 yrs...his anger still lingers plus he needs his questions answered. being home is hard for kennedy not just bc of her mom vut bc her sisters have pretty much ganged up on her for her absence all these years. xander and kennedy call a truce and are letting bygones be bygones. kennedys mom was in the process of adopting 13 yr old Ari when she died and kennedy is the only one who ari will speak to and its because they can related to one another. Kennedy had always been the family screwup and it doesnt help that her sisters throw it in her face..no job no education no money...but what no one knows is that she has a award winning travel blog and there is interest for her to publish. her self esteem is at an all time low. kennedy has some plans..but will her sisters listen or will they shun her? Xander finally learns the truth about why kennedy left...but what will he do with that info? will kennedy finally be free from her past skeletons?
Kennedy and Xander’s second chance romance is a compelling story of heartbreak, survival, and reunion as Kennedy returns amid tragedy to a family bitter with pain. My heart broke for Kennedy and the circumstances that drove her away from Eden’s Ridge and led to her estrangement from her family and Xander. Her struggles as an abandoned child in the foster system are a heartbreaking reality for so many innocent kiddos and her resulting insecurities play a huge part in the story. I loved Xander’s abiding love for Kennedy that hasn’t faded in the 10 years she’s been away, and I’m really looking forward to experiencing the rest of the series. Amy McFadden’s nuanced and emotionally charged performance of the story brought me to tears in more than one occasion so I rate it with 5 enthusiastic stars
I gave this author a lot of crap about her novellas. So much crap that after reading this, I feel slightly bad about it. I won't apologize for not liking novellas - rushed love is just not for me. So if you're reading this Kait Nolan, sorry but not sorry...
As far as this story, it wasn't particularly long, but there is a lot of backstory and emotion crammed in. Because of that, it doesn't feel rushed nor dragged out... the perfect pace to be honest. The characters are very likable, even the secondary and background ones. Definitely makes me want to pick up the next book in the series and read what's in store for them.. but I will skip the novella that makes up book 1.5 in this series ;)
A very adorable second chance romance! I was never really captivated per say but it was definitely a fast read that I finished in one sitting. Kennedy was a cute, free spirited traveler who is now thinking of settling down in the town she grew up in. It just so happens her ex-boyfriend is still in the town and is the deputy. It’s a cute small town romance but there were definitely some gaps in the plot that left me shaking my head and things were just too neatly wrapped up. This book has very little dialogue and is written in 3rd person (I think) which took me a while to get the feel for. Not going to make it on my favorites list or anything but if you’re looking for a small town romance this could be a great place to start!
This is a story about love, forgiveness, and second chances. Kennedy has been traveling the world for a decade but when a family emergency brings her back home, she has to make peace with everyone she left behind. Xander never really got over his first love and suddenly she is back. Can Kennedy and Xander find a way to recapture what they once had? Although this story focused on Kennedy and Xander's second chance at love, there was what I call a substoryline present as well. When Kennedy left, she didn't just leave Xander behind, she left her family as well. Can she repair the damage that a decade away has done?
Kait Nolan has written another sweet but sexy book. Her characters are well developed and believable. They are people that I would like to be friends with. The storyline is totally real, something that could happen to almost anyone, almost anywhere. Mix the characters with the storyline and there is a perfect blend of sweet, funny, sexy with just enough angst to make it I interesting. I think this is going to be a great series and I look forward to the next book in the series.
I received an ARC of this book from the author. I voluntarily reviewed it. All conclusions are my own.
This romance packed in some deep emotions and kept me reading straight through from start to finish. The complicated family dynamic was well done for the most part, but I kept wanting more backstory or information on why Kennedy's sisters were so quick to judge her. Xander had a good reason to be upset about the past, but the sisters' judgement seemed too extreme and took away from the romance re-developing between Kennedy and Xander. And the reason for Kennedy's absence was too easy to guess early on... Good thing the second chance romance was cute! (I won't be reading about any of the sisters, best to leave it at just book one.)
When You Got A Good Thing by Kait Nolan is a fairly short read, perfect for those with limited time for reading. Ms Nolan has delivered a well-written book. The characters are realistic and lovable. Kennedy and Xander's story is full of drama, suspense, humor and spice. I enjoyed reading When You Got A Good Thing and look forward to reading more from Kait Nolan in the future. When You Got A Good Thing is book 1 of The Misfit Inn Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
Kennedy got off easy. It was an easy fix, blame it on the father. Completely looked over the fact she had left for 10 years and wouldn't have come back if her mom hadn't died. What kind of love is that?
He was right to be angry but all of a sudden his mother says he's wrong.
I want to one day read a book without copouts, without some revelation that will make the woman right and the man wrong. She did something wrong hold her responsible. Its like they never stopped being 18.
