Everyone in the small town of Washington knows the local legend of Marton Manor; they just don't take it seriously.

Seven descendants of the original victims are invited to earn six-thousand dollars as guest stars on a popular ghost-hunting show. All they have to do is stay in the house for ten hours and record with their hosts. But what happens when this glorified lock-in brings out the spirit of a locked-in killer? Do they stay for the six-k or choose to live another day?

Hello Hazel takes the haunted house trope and gives it some real teeth. I thought it was a solid and eerie little novella that balanced atmosphere and emotion better than most full-length horror novels do. The haunting wasn’t just about bumps in the night; there was a real emotional undercurrent running through it, especially in the moments where Hazel calls out to Amelia. Seeing those words in bright red in the ebook gave it an extra chill factor that pulled me even deeper into the story.

The pacing stayed tight from start to finish, and the setting felt genuinely immersive; that house had a life of its own. I do wish the backstory for some of the descendants had been expanded on a bit more, but I get that space is limited in a novella. What we did get was effective and left enough mystery to keep my mind spinning after the last page. The horror elements landed hard without needing excessive gore or shock value, and the blend of gothic and modern paranormal vibes worked really well.

I also appreciated that there was more going on beneath the surface. Both Hazel and Timothy carried this weight of unresolved trauma, which made the haunting feel as psychological as it was supernatural. The twist about the house’s history came together quickly toward the end, but it still managed to catch me off guard, which is always a plus when I don’t see it coming.

Overall, Hello Hazel packed a surprising punch for such a short read. It’s the kind of story I can see myself revisiting every October; creepy, emotional, and just the right length for a spooky night in.

Couldn't put it down!

I loved this book! And the ending, perfection! *chef's kiss*
For anyone just wanting a quick read, it only took me two hours to finish. The same amount of time I would have spent just trying to find something to watch on any streaming service.
