Initially, this book read as a traditional athlete biography. However, three chapters in particular stood out; the chapter regarding Sparky's son Lee, Bobby Tolan and Don Gullett. While some gaps are here and there, those three chapters in particular showed that Sparky was unwilling to hide from uncomfortable topics head on. As a Tiger fan, much of what was discussed here was not part of his Tiger career so it added another dimension to the Hall of Famer that I was not as aware of previously.
