Speaking Truth, Teaching What I Learned from Mr. Lindsey to Teach and Lead in the Age of A.I.
By Kalyan Ali Balaven

How do we teach humanity in an age of artificial intelligence?

In this deeply personal and powerfully practical book, educator and school leader Kalyan Ali Balaven shares the story of how one teacher—Mr. Tommie Lindsey—changed the trajectory of his life and inspired a career devoted to empowering students, amplifying voices, and building inclusive communities.

From a homeless teenager clutching canned food outside an apartment building to becoming a Head of School shaping entire learning ecosystems, Balaven reveals how lessons in humanity, dignity, risk-taking, and belonging became the foundation for how he teaches and leads in an algorithm-driven world.

Through vivid storytelling, readers will meet the students, teachers, and moments that shaped an ethos of education centered

Voice & Why every student’s story matters more than ever.

Listening as How dialogue and moral courage build trust across differences.

Failure as How risk-taking and humility create resilient learners.

Belonging as Why inclusive spaces and systems are essential for authentic learning.

Each chapter ends with practical exercises for educators and school leaders who want to bring humanity back into their classrooms and institutions—even as AI transforms how we work and learn.

If you’ve ever wondered how to balance technological innovation with authentic human connection in education, this book is for you.

I picked up this gem at my local coffee shop and couldn't resist the title as a high school English teacher who feels incredibly disheartened over the lack of creativity, empathy and resilience I see in so many of my students today. From some of the first chapters, I was able to apply some of Balaven's ideas and shift my perspective on how I saw my classroom. I will be recommending this to all my fellow Educators and will be using this as a resource for years to come.
