In another time and place, that might have a nice ring to it. But standing in a Chicago hotel room with a cub reporter as obstinate as she is hot, FBI agent Derek Knight knows he has to play it charming. Something like, “By holding on to that evidence, you’re interfering with FBI business, ma’am, and by the way, those long, gorgeous legs of yours would look awfully good wrapped around my. . .” Sure, losing all sense of professionalism may not help his career, but the off-duty perks would be sensational. . .
“Yeah, right, you’re an FBI agent. And I can bake a cake from scratch.”
Reese Hampton is not giving up the envelope she found in her rental car–the one with the story that could take her from journalistic Siberia straight to the front page. She’ll just have to outsmart the certifiably insane Fed with the movie-star good looks. Dodge and weave. Distract and bed. No! Bad hormones, bad! Still, spending time with that unbelievably broad chest up close and personal might just add, um, depth to her story. If only she can let her robe down while keeping her guard up. . .
USA Today and New York Times Bestselling author Erin McCarthy sold her first book in 2002 and has since written over a hundred novels and novellas in teen fiction, new adult, and adult romance. Erin has a special weakness for high-heeled boots, beaches and martinis. She lives in Ohio with her family, two grumpy cats and a socially awkward dog.
Erin McCarthy is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. I tore through this one in one day! It is a quick, funny, and most importantly hot read.
Derek is an FBI agent that investigates white collar crimes. He’s currently been working on busting a large pharmaceutical company that has been price fixing drugs. He’s finally got a breakthrough with a cooperative witness that is willing to talk. He’s located in Chicago.
Reese is a reporter for local paper in New Jersey. She took a crap assignment in Chicago covering some society wedding that she doesn’t give hoot about. She ends up barging into Derek’s life case, and getting a lead on a large story that could kick her career in the right direction. It turns out the wedding she’s covering is that of one of the executives that Derek is watching.
The moment they meet—which is pretty funny—sparks are flying. He needs her to back off and not blow his case, and she just wants him to hand her the big story. They butt heads constantly and the verbal sparring is amusing. However, as these types of heroines do, she started to grate on my nerves towards the end. She didn’t seem to care about anything but the story, no matter what Derek’s feelings were or the consequences. She just storms ahead leaving him to ‘fix it’. She border lined on ‘choke-worthy’, so it is for this reason it drops a star, to four.
Wow. This book was such a disappointment to me compared to the last book I read by Erin McCarthy (Houston, We Have A Problem). The hero/heroine really had nothing between them other than that they were at it like bunnies the entire novel.
Seriously, the book was like a couple pages of pseudo-FBI case, followed by bunny love, and a couple more pages of silly case. I was floored when the hero and heroine admited their love for one another. I said to myself: "REALLY!?!?!??!?!!" Not in my book. That was lust, pure and simple. No love in sight.
Erin McCarthy can write some good scenes, but there was one I found a bit over the top to me. Involved a gun. Hmmm. The guy is FBI. I could understand frisking. Handcuffs. But a gun used in that manner? Hmmm.
This was a DNF book for me. I have read several other books by this author and enjoyed them, but could not finish this book. I could not stand Reese, the heroine. I found her to be immature and could not understand how she was ever smart enough to became a reporter. I also thought Derek should have just arrested her for withholding evidence instead of going along with what she wanted.
Okay, yall know I love Erin McCarthy. She's become one of my favorite authors and I've really enjoyed almost everything I've read of hers but gotta admit this wasn't one of my favorites. The basic premise was great. A down on his luck FBI agent, Derek Knight, who is on the verge of taking down a group of corrupt drug companies but runs into a couple complications, namely reporter Reese Hampton who wants to break the story and advance her career. The main characters were nice. I really liked Derek who is 10 years older than Reese and doesn't have the smoothest moves but is rather sweet and endearing. There's a big age difference between the two but that doesn't usually bother me. Reese, though I liked her in general, was rather immature and just didn't think things through which I found rather frustrating. She couldn't seem to grasp how her interference and determination to break the story NOW would damage the case and likely let the bad guys get away. She came across rather thoughtless towards Derek and a bit selfish in that regard.
There's a serious case of insta-lust going on between the two from the very start. And the next 269 pages were basically a sexfest for the two with the FBI investigation against the drug companies playing a very, very small role. Every other page these two were going at it like horny teenagers. There was also a really odd scene where they brought Derek's gun into the play that was just....weird and kinda creeped me out . It sure worked for them though. But damn it was just so bizarre.
I think my main disappointment was that while McCarthy's books usually have the hot and steamy going on in them the storyline is balanced out nicely with an actual relationship outside the sheets or or a decent plotline. This one leaned just a little too heavily towards that bedroom and didn't have enough other stuff going on to keep me all that interestd interested. While this wasn't my favorite read it would be great for a beach read where you just want a good romp and not too much of a plot.
Plot- FBI agent Derek Knight is trying to uncover evidence of pharmaceutical price fixing fraud. His informat leaves key evidence in the wrong rental car driven by ambitious reporter, Reese. Derek drives after Reese to retrieve the envelope but Reese has already opened it and knows she's got a hot story. They meet and are instantly attracted to each other.
What was good- Reese and Derek were cute and funny together. Reese can be really flaky sometimes but it added to the humor. Example--Derek gets a call from the informant. Reese decides to tail him but isn't adequately dressed, decides brown pumps don't get with pajama bottoms so opts for the fuzzy slippers instead which she also wears on their first date to a Mexican restaurant.
What was very annoying- I know this is supposed to be a light, funny chick lit so I didn't take the book seriously. However, entire chapters were filled with "hot steamy" thoughts, talk, acts, etc.. and then it was like, "Oh yeah, we have a really important story/case to worry about." Also, maybe I'm a prude, but was completely disgusted with the use of a gun (while unloaded) as a forplay toy.
Contemporary romance with sex, lots & lots & lots of sex. This is an early EM, copyright 2004. This is bottom of the barrel for her. Now I like EM & usually I rate her books pretty high. This one, however is a turkey.
Reese is a journalist & she's also pretty stupid. She acts stupid. She sounds stupid when she opens her mouth. When Derek tries to retrieve an envelope she accidently has in her rented car, he identifies himself as FBI & shows her the badge to prove it. What does she do? Assaults him & runs away. This book just groans with comments that are supposed to be funny, but aren't. For example : "She wanted an orgasm from Knight, not a toenail fungus from his dirty shower". Derek was OK, until the sex scene with the loaded gun. No.....just no.
This was a reread, but I've only read it one other time. It was so painful to get through this, I had to read a couple of chapters at a time, then read something else. It's taken me a LOOONG time to get through it. I can't recommend it, sorry. Resale shop pile!
I honestly dont remember the last time I started to dislike the main character so fast. I dont think stupid even covers Reese. Hot man = stalker/serial killer??? Wow. I have liked Erin McCarthys books before, but that one character got to my nerves too much.
I've read all her fast track series and "mouth to mouth". Although totally predictable and sometimes eye-rolling moments, I have enjoyed them for what they are; sexy, light reads. I started this book and right away it annoyed me. Reese grated my nerves and in the beginning, she thinks he's a crazy stalker and after him explaining and hearing from others the truth, she takes off. She was very self-centered and in my opinion, pretty stupid and he was whiny...and I only got through 40 pages before deciding it wasn't getting better. I am not the type to put a book down very often once I pick it up, always having to see how it turned out, don't like leaving things undone, but just wanted to beat her down and give him a bottle of Prozac. (No offense to anyone, I've taken Prozac and will probably will be on antidepressants the rest of my life, so I'm not making a dig about meds) But he was driving me nuts. LOL. So to sum up, the part of the this book I read, sucked and I won't be torturing myself with the rest. time to try a different one, maybe her vampire series??
Cute story. If you like sassy characters and a book that makes you laugh, this is one you should pick up. Derek and Reese are two people who are so focused on their careers, their instant attraction is a surprise to both of them. But they go with it and find out that they are perfect for each other! The reason it took me so long to finish was that several books in ongoing series by my favorite authors came out that I had to read asap!
I am a big fan of Ms. McCarthy and have read many of her stories now. Her sense of humor in the dialogue in her scenes has me giggling frequently. I like that her female characters are not ditzy or typical females in distress, or even the type that makes you want to reach out and virtually slap some sense into them. The story itself was well done and again, not typical in that it's not (gasp!) a murder mystery! The story was written with insight and feels complete at the end.
Derek Knight is an FBI Agent and his informant left evidence in a rental car that Ms. Reese Hampton has just driven away in. He follows her, but by the time he finally gets his envelope back, she’s taken a good look at it and, as a reporter, has every intention of turning into the story that will save her career. She and Derek naturally have an attraction to one another and definitely give into it, but this complicates things, since she keeps asking Derek for information about his case and he keeps trying to keep her out of it so she doesn’t compromise it. As his feelings for her grow deeper and she finds more and more ways to interfere, he’s afraid she’ll get exactly what she wants and leave his life forever if he doesn’t do something soon.
This is really kind of a silly premise for a story, mostly because the heroine is an absolute idiot, and a selfish one at that. In fact, the author seems to use the stupidity of the general population as the basis of humor. The heroine overreacts to a guy approaching her in a car rental lot saying that he left something in the car. Does she simply let him get what he needs out of the car? No, she freaks out, panics and drives away. When he follows her for it, she figures he must be insane and ends up in a deli where he follows and she and the deli-workers assault him. When she finds out he’s ACTUALLY the FBI agent he claims to be, does she give him the thing he’s after? NO. She runs from him and keeps it. This is not how normal people behave. And 7% in I was already frustrated with her idiocy. Derek in the meantime should have just arrested her ass and thrown her in jail. Instead they proceed to having lots and lots of sex. Reese really is kinda TSTL. She does a lot of stupid shit and makes a lot of silly mistakes...the only difference between her and other TSTL heroines is that she never finds any negative consequences, but she very well could have. At one point she almost talked the informant out of being an informant...I would have liked to see that come back and bite her in the ass.
Now the conflict in this story primarily comes from the fact that she’s seen the evidence and wants to write a story about it but he can’t share any information with her because it would compromise the case. She doesn’t care that she might interfere with a case or prevent the criminals (who are price-fixing and have a monopoly on prescription drugs) from receiving justice, so long as she gets her story so she can accomplish her goals. In the meantime, when her ambition screws over Derek’s case, thousands of Americans can just keep paying exorbitant prices for their medicine. I honestly couldn’t figure why Derek found himself falling for Reese and apart from the lust they continually give into, there aren’t much in the way of feelings between them, especially not from her. Not this author’s greatest story in all honesty. This author does write much better than this (though still not in a style that I enjoy personally), as this is an early release and she’s since developed her craft. Read one of her later books.

Story was awful from beginning to end. I hated Reese from the very beginning & she just got more annoying and bratty throughout the book. She's not really a reporter; wanna-be at best and she has no skills to actually dig into any story. In this case she fell into it bc of an incompetent FBI agent who lost evidence then brings her along because he wants to have sex with her. Story outside of sex between them was almost non-existent so I found this extremely boring.
A reporter and a FBI agent accidentally switch cars, almost sounds like the start of a joke. A whistle blower leaves an envelope with incriminating information for the agent, Derek. But Reese sees the information as a way to get a real reporting job, stop doing society puff pieces. Can they both win?
This is a story of an FBI investigation into pharmaceutical price-fixing with a mix-up in getting some evidence. He is the agent and she is a journalist who wants the story. They have immediate chemistry that gets in the way of getting their respective jobs done, but they eventually work things out. Witty conversations. Highly recommended.
I love Erim McCarthy! This is the 5th or 6th book I have reads written by her and every single one I am so engaged. The hot scenes are definitely HOT! The heroine was super sassy! Light, easy, fun read for an airplane ride.
I just couldn't with anything in this book...the characters, the way it started, the pacing. It all made me vaguely uncomfortable. It all just felt silly and weird, and I didn't want to read any more about either of the characters or the lackluster plot.
Haha, great beginning! I've often been very paranoid like the female lead character Reese when by myself in a parking garage. I love how she starts to get into the car chase a little bit and the deli scene is hilarious. I can already tell Derek isn't going to know what hit him when he meets up with this woman. Ok, call me wimpy or whatever but I don't think I would withhold evidence from a F.B.I agent. I know Reese is a reporter but damn it's the F.B.I! I would prefer not to end up in Gitmo or wherever the new one is going to be thank you very much. "Turn around I want to look at your ass." Classic. I'm sure at some point in their lives every woman has wanted to demand this of a man and I give props to Reese for actually saying it. Honestly, I didn't even feel as if I had taken my first breathe since starting the story until I got to chapter 6. Those first five chapters was intense fast reading. The playfulness between these two is so damn enjoyable, not to mention hot :) Oh, god the pastie scene was awesome, so funny how the small pasties seemed to throw Derek for a loop. Poor men and their inability to understand women's underthings. At first I was annoyed with the whole pharmaceutical drug pricing F.B.I case interrupting the smoking Reese/Derek chemistry, but then further in the book I was like ok, ok they're having sexy time again and wanting some more story. There was never a good balance between action plot and relationship plot. I also found myself getting annoyed with how buttinski Reese was in Derek's case. Once again I know she is a reporter looking for her big break but some of the things she does could cause the fail of a very important case, and she understands how important it is but seems to immature to rethink her actions. Oooh, maybe the author meant for it to seem this way since there is a little bit of a focus on Reese being 26yrs and Derek at 36yrs, so maybe Ms. McCarthy was subtlety acknowledging Reese's age. Or maybe I'm looking too much into it and Reese's annoying, stupid interference was just a crappy plot point to keep Reese in Chicago and with Derek. I just had to copy and paste this little exchange on here: He blinked and turned his head to look at her. "You want a good night kiss?" "No! I want you to want a good night kiss." Duh. Classic boyfriend/girlfriend talk with the whole "I want you to want," hahaha, some really cute exchanges in this book. Whoa, the unorthodox use of the gun/sex scene (think about it and you'll know what I'm talking about) was a little too weird for me. Handcuffs, wonderful edgy fun; guns not so much for me. Maybe it caught me off guard with this not being a book where you would expect something like that and that was why I was weirded out by it. I'm going to go ahead and guesstimate here that this books contained 90% booty scenes and 10% action plot. I found myself needing more story and breaks from Derek and Reese in the bedroom. I'm weird like that. I think some authors need to learn the power of sexual tension and how delaying that first getting down and dirty scene can make it all that much better. I mean let us all go back to "Moonlighting" (tv show in the late '80s, wait why I am I explaining what Moonlighting was, every women alive in the '80s should know the show). What made that show great I ask you? That's right sexual tension and being only 8 or 9 at the time I still remember that coffee table scene which was cumulation of over two yrs worth of s.t. The first part of the story was fast paced and fantastic. I also thoroughly enjoyed how Reese totally and completely put Derek through the ringer. There were great witty lines in this story but Reese's stubborn immaturity and the overabundance of bedroom scenes (that sounds like something people are going to think I am crazy for complaining about) kept this book from being a keeper for me. I am glad I read it and definitely recommend it if you are hankering for a light fun F.B.I. agent romp read. May I also say thank god I finally picked a book which was a least a B and gave me something to write about!!!
Reese Hampton works as a journalist for a very small New York newspaper, one third is sports, one third is obituaries, and one third is gossip. She has been send to Chicago to cover a very important wedding. Without permission from the happy couple or their powerful families of course. After a horrible flight, Reese lands in Chicago and goes to her rental car to seek out her hotel. A strange but very handsome man in a car is checking her out in the parking garage, and she is alarmed when he gets out of his car and follows her to her own! Luckily, she knows how to handle herself, and manages to get in her car and away from him. But he seems to follow her! Driving through red lights, making unsuspected turns, he keeps at her! She is being stalked! So desperately Reese stops her car when he blocks her way, and runs into a deli, screaming for help. Which she gets, the man is wrestled to the floor. Being brought into the back of the shop, she hears his claims to be an FBI agent, sure he said something like that to her before, but she just did not believe him. But when the police come and find him legit, she sees no other choice but to slink out of the back door and go to her hotel.
Derek Knight is not a happy man. His informant has left the evidence he desperately needs for his big case in the wrong rental car, and now this woman thinks he is stalking her and refuses to give him the envelope. But he is FBI and he will get it back. With a bit of charm and some FBI strongarming, he finally gets the rental company to tell him who rented that car and where she was headed, and he follows the gorgeous blonde to her hotel.
Inside her hotel room, Reese notices she is still clutching the envelope the FBI agent was after, and being the nosy reporter she is, she opens it and reads it all. She is over the moon, this story could make her career! Quickly making photocopies from all the papers with her phone, she then stuffs the papers back in the envelope. She will probably have to turn that in… But the knock on her door is not room service, but the handsome FBI agent who was chasing her. He is not happy with her, but that instant attraction between them is hot. Reese tries to bargain with him about the story, but Derek is not interested in that. Still, she knows too much and she could jeopardize his case if she starts poking around on her own.
When Derek finds out which wedding she attending the next day, he agrees to be her date…
Even though I really liked this book, there is not much of a real story. I think 60 to 70 percent of the book is love scenes, and making out scenes. They sure have the hots for each other. First there is a lack of real sex because they don’t have condoms, but after two days, no more limitations. They do understand each other though, and although Reese is more a tomboy than a lady, having grown up with a military father and three older brothers and no mother, she does show compassion for his difficulties. She does not intend to harm his career, but she will have this story. And she knows she can help his case, even though he keeps warning her off.
Derek does have a problem that Reese is only 26, and he is 39, but she does make him feel younger. Then there is the complication of his 24 years young sister moving in with him, and he only having a one bedroom apartment. Still, he doesn’t want to part from Reese just yet, and she cannot keep living in the hotel room after she quit her job.
It was fun, I loved the dialogue and how they started to trust the other, and learn to give in. They also betted a lot, as that was the only thing Reese learned growing up with her brothers, and then cheating. Lots and lots and lots more of sex scenes though. I could have done with a bit less of those, but I will confess that I did not start skipping them either. I am a big fan of Erin McCarthy’s books and her writing style and the characters she creates. They are flawed and fun.
In what reality would an informant for the FBI put information in THE WRONG CAR and that car just so happens to be a rental car for a smokin' hot babe? And the FBI agent waiting for the information sees her and INSTANTLY gets a boner, and she drives off with the info and he chases her? And then she gets away and he figures out who she is and goes to her hotel room and they have sex? And then they fall in love obviously all the while having great sex and getting on each others nerves because shes a reporter wanting the story and hes the FBI agent trying to stop her from informing the public of the info?
I don't know to be honest, but it was A+. Especially with the sex scenes. Very, very, VERY descriptive. Even if the story was far-fetched (though they usually are), it did not matter to me. Still flawless. I couldn't put it down. I'm pretty sure the fact that the majority of the story was descriptive sex scenes is what really did it for me. And I do not care.
I actually liked Erin McCarthy's writing for a trashy romance, which is hard for me to like. I'm very picky when it comes to my trashy romances. But this really hit the trash-mance on the nose. I approve, and I can't wait to read some more of her books.
What was good about this book was Reese (the main character) and Derek( her "boyfriend") were cute and funny together.
I would not recommend this book to anyone only because it was a little to "dirty" and the plot was very predictable. So i would have to not recommend this to anyone because it really was not a good book.
Derek is a grumpy older man, but he has a protective streak a mile wide. It’s not immediately obvious, but his perfect match is Reese. She loves to tease and make him loosen the restrictions that govern his actions. With older brothers, she’s found she has to go to extremes to defend herself and her independence captivates Derek too, and she’s not adverse to using bending the rules to win. She’s not destined to be a housewife, but she brings light and fun into any situation she finds herself in. When she sees a chance for her to leave her smaller paper for more hard-hitting pursuits, she jumps at the opportunity.
Reese is a hot mess, but I love that about her. She doesn’t need protecting, but Derek feels duty bound to do just that. It’s a part of his genetic make-up and his profession. As he tries to keep her out of trouble, she finds herself right in the middle of it, and they end up helping each other, professionally and personally- Derek to be more spontaneous and Reese to be more accepting of who she is and realizing that all she brings is more than enough.
Wow, Laurel and Russ were so a beautiful couple for MOUTH TO MOUTH by Erin McCarthy. With Laurel being a heroine who is deaf, I also being deaf, could so connect with empathy and understanding with Laurel. This author did an outstanding job both portraying Laurel's independence but too showing those times too that we do depend on others but it doesn't make us dependent, it makes us even stronger for it. Russ was not just a yummy hero, but so a natural one! He learned through getting to know Laurel, her culture and ways and you couldn't help smiling so many times at the two of them as they learned together. And I love Russ cuz he loves candy! That was so perfect and sizzling in the story. That's a hint that this is a delicious contemporary romance not to miss! Its the best I read of the contemporary of McCarthy and her others were A's for me too!
ok, i just read three of mccarthy's books and i'm just going to cut and paste my review for all three - because its all the same stuff!
don't get me wrong - they're exactly right for what i was looking for today: fun, fast reads with good-ish characters and fabulous sex.
"smart mouth", "houston we have a problem" and "mouth to mouth" are all great books - with "mouth to mouth" being a "better" book in terms of character development, story line, etc. but still, all three are definitely shy of hitting the literature mark. but surpass the usual chick lit in that the sex is nice and raunchy.
so, if you're looking for fun, fast summer reads with snappy dialogue and some graphic sex - look no further!
(i've now officially read all her books. and want more!)
Erin McCarthy has a dirty mind and I liked. This book was a little more sexually explicit than i thought it would be, but i still enjoyed it. The main character is a newspaper reporter looking for a litte more excitement and when she accidently takes an FBI agents rental car. A little bit of a crazy chase happens and the pair meet up later at her hotel room. She finds out that hes involved in a real top secret case and she decides covering the story is her ticket to money and fame town. Much to his reluctance she begins following the FBI agent and soon they start sharing a little more than just notes. An entertaining easy read.
Smart Mouth was a great book. It was awesome, and oddly believable, but that doesn't help the fact that it came up short in a lot of areas. Mostly plot and character development. What I mean to say is that it had a freaking ton of sex. Lots. Lots and lots of sex. I really wish that there had been less sex. I felt like Reece did - that she just needed to go outside and be out of the bedroom for one night. She complained several times that they never went out and I have to agree. It was a really funny book, I will give it that. Very enjoyable read.
TBR Challenge 2011- June Category: Contemporary. This book has been on my Goodreads TBR list since July 2010.
Smart Mouth is meant to be light, humorous and sexy. It's definitely light, and it's very sexy. The sex scenes are numerous and well done. The humor was more hit-and-miss with me, but it was mostly enjoyable and few times even made me laugh aloud.
The only things that marred my enjoyment was the preposterous plot and the big chip on Reece's shoulder. Since her antics were suppose to be humorous, that part didn't work as well for me.
