Emma Carter’s life is a whirlwind of flour, sugar, and the boundless energy of her six-year-old son, Max. Her bakery, Emma’s Sweet Retreat, is her pride and joy, and landing the coveted Grant Group gala catering contract could secure their future. But one disastrous collision sends her cupcakes flying—and her temper flaring—when she comes face-to-face with Jack Grant.
Jack isn’t just any sharply dressed stranger. He’s the billionaire CEO of the Grant Group—and the very man standing between Emma and her dreams. Cool, calculated, and far too grumpy for his own good, Jack thrives in the world of contracts, not kitchens. Yet Emma’s fiery independence and irresistible passion begin to melt his walls.
As buttercream debates give way to deeper sparks, scandal, sabotage, and a manipulative ex threaten everything. Can a cynical billionaire and a resilient baker find a recipe for love—or will the sweetest chance slip away?
I am reviewing this based off an ARC. I am not going to summarize the books what for?
First, this book had so much potential, it started off intriguing and was well written the first few chapters. Unfortunately, about 20% of the book began to spiral into a frustrating mess. At about 40% completion, it became very painful to finish the entirety of the story. The only reason I did was because I agreed to an ARC type website. 1. The execution of the plot was flawed There were so many inconsistencies.
For example, in one chapter, FMC Emma told the MMC Jack about her ex. She told the MMC, about how the ex ran away and drained their joint bank account. Only a few chapters later, the ex, the ex named Ryan texted Emma getting her all flustered. When jack, the MMC, confronts Emma why she is in a mood, Emma explains. But she explains the whole story again about her ex as if the previous interaction did not occur. (or did the author forget what she wrote?) Then in her inner monologue states, “Ryan also drained my bank about but that’s a secret I won’t tell jack.” Emma already told this secret. Here is an example of another inconsistent scenario…. Jack and Emma are together casually fixing a shelf Jack mentions his dad was a mechanic. Then a few chapters later, Jack had an uncomfortable encounter with his stuck-up mother. She does not approve of the baker’s “pedigree,” yet the dad was a mechanic. Also, jack goes to his dad’s study. So, his parents had money, and a lot of it, it was his “dad’s legacy” that is how he became a billionaire. But as a mechanic? He became a billionaire as a mechanic and created a legacy? (again, did the author forget this detail?) it’s impressive but how? 2. There were two instances, I was very confused in the story. First is when Candace, an ex-of-Jack, came to the baker “spitting” venous statements (those are the words the author used in Emma’s inner monologue ) to make Emma become insecure. Candace used the phrase “broken little bird, jack likes to fix”. This happened in her Bakery, the only people there were Emma, an employee name Mia and candace. Later, Jack ‘s inner monologue mentioned “but candace called her a little broken bird”….. how in the world would he know that? Things like this happened multiple times.
3.I got so irked with the repetitive phrases and words… I mean it was infuriating. The words “variable, logistics” (used over 12 times) the phrases involving the words “surgical, climate-controlled” (used over 6) were so redundant. They were overused almost as much as Jack’s POV reminding the reader of his analytical emotionless personality. Every chapter of Jack’s POV, I was reminded of the exact same thing every time, jack’s world based of Numbers, logistics, data points and variables… I was also constantly reminded he did like to control the outcome too.
Every, Single. Time. It was jack POV
4. the two MCs were very unlikable. In fact, I would even say the FMC was idiotic. Instead of having character development, Emma regressed. She started off somewhat confident, then she had a moment where the shaky confidence became a strong confidence. Especially talking about the science behind the intertwined flavors of her cupcakes. She repeatedly said, her bakery was for the foundation of raising max, her son. The bakery and Max gave her confidence. But it later lapsed. Instead of growing my consistent with confidence she literally spiraled.
5. Emma became idiotic when her ex who she stated multiple times, is manipulative, and undependable. She hadn’t seen him in over 6 years, when she was pregnant with Max. (This next part is what triggered my 1star review) This mom allowed her son, who does not know Ryan, who feared Ryan, to allow her ex to take him for 7 hours the day following Max’s first ever encounter with Ryan. Then she complained how Ryan was poisoning max saying their life is so small. What mother lets their child go with someone they don’t know, don’t trust and with someone their child doesn’t know?!? An idiotic person that’s who.
6. Lastly, what made this chaotic mess worse was the lack of swoon. There was no romantic relationship. There were no swoony, knees weak heart stopping moments. The interactions were only ever professional or cordial.
SPOILER ALERT FOLLOWING How in the world did Emma fall in love with this man in 4 days when more than half of their encounters were professional? She created a future for the two of them out of thin air. This book was way too long, predictable and frankly, the author spent more time trying to paint a picture of the scene then having any significance in the scene. (I mean she painted the scene, you get a visual with all the details then it’s a pointless interaction between characters.)

His Reason to Live Instead of Just Surviving - Emma was livid when her carefully crafted cupcakes meant to help her get a deal was destroyed after crushing into a stranger. However, Emma’s irritation turned into horror when her best friend arrived on the scene to introduce the man she had been reprimanding, as the person she was supposed to make a deal with. Jack”s sister managed to convince him to give Emma another chance, which led to him finding himself in a situation that was far out of his comfort zone, but it also allowed him to truly appreciate the vision that she was trying to portray for the event.
Nevertheless, Emma’s happiness at getting the agreement was short lived, as she suffered a few setbacks, that could have caused her to lose faith in herself, but she didn’t let it hinder her progress. Jack soon found himself spending more time with Emma and even took on an unexpected role that was outside his comfort zone because of her son. Unfortunately, not everyone was happy with Emma and Jack building a relationship, which led to numerous incidents that wreaked havoc on their lives and caused friction between them.
Luckily, Emma and Jack were able to not only recover from the disasters, but they finally acknowledged their feelings for each other and fought for their chance to have a happily ever after. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why I couldn’t take a break from reading this book, even though it was over three hundred pages long, then I realised it was because I was hooked on the story and on tenterhooks trying to anticipate how the book would end. I can say without a shadow of doubt, it was an enjoyable read that I will happily recommend.

Hang on get comfortable you will need to be because she won’t be putting this down until the last page has been turned. Emma is sweet, bakes sweets some of the best cupcakes ever people drive from far just to get one of her cupcakes along with her six-year-old son and she is met by the grumpiest, coldest man she has ever met. Jack sexy as all get out CEO grumpy isn’t good in social situations or human interaction for that matter but when he needed a find a caterer for a corporate event he was lost and then he ran into the baker literally with her cupcakes. Jack ruined her cupcakes to help her get a deal of course she isn’t too happy with him and just when she lets him have a small piece of her mind her best friend shows up to introduce him as the man in need of an event planner. The magnetic pull between them instantly and couldn’t be ignored but the more he thought about it his mind was telling him no, but his sister convinced him to give her a chance. The more they worked together the more he saw her vision for his event with the help of Max Jack was able to get past some of his social issues, but then there someone else causing issues for the two of them the closer they get but will they let her stop them, will the event go as planned, will Max get the father he has always wanted, and will the event lead to happiness?
Emma runs a charming Bakery that produces the best ever cupcakes but more than that she is at the hub of the community. Jack is an ice cold CEO who does not relate well to human interaction but he unexpectedly came into contact with Emma while looking for a Caterer for a huge corporate event he is about to host. They literally bump into each other stand this triggers a wonderful sequence of events that bring them together. Emma has a lovely six year old son, Max who is key to their discovery of each other. This is a really good read that grabbed my heart from the start and held me enthralled right to the end.
-A heartfelt, captivating story of setbacks, resilience, and finding forever happiness. I received a free copy and am voluntarily sharing my honest thoughts.
Emma’s cupcakes collide with Jack’s cold, corporate world in the most unexpected way. What begins as irritation quickly melts into a slow-burn romance full of heart and heat. With her son Max at the center, Emma teaches Jack love, warmth, and second chances.
