Stars in the Sky: Stories of the First African American Flight Attendants

Rate this book
“Stars in the Sky is an honest and entertaining account of integration in the ranks of commercial flight attendants. Casey Grant has done a great service by chronicling yet another victory in our ongoing march toward full civil rights and a level playing field.” —U.S. Representative Marcia L. Fudge

“Ms. Grant presents an incredible story of change in the lives of thousands of young, bright, talented and professional African American women, as well the change in the institutional culture of a major industry. The public at large knows little of the trials and tribulations they endured, or the barriers they broke down, or the bridges they built, so others might enjoy greater opportunities and careers. Ms. Grant reflects on those that made the cut. Their lives and their stories will be a continuous inspiration to young women to pursue their dreams and reach for the stars.” —William Lucy (Ret.) International Secretary-Treasurer AFSCME

“Stars in the Sky takes the reader on a riveting first class flight, landing in historic places, isles of intrigue, and countries of drama. This book skillfully intertwines the history, glamour, and fortitude of the first African American flight attendants.” —D. Jerry Garcia, Congressional Member Chief of Staff

A very interesting look at the history of African American flight attendants. The author was one herself. It's not a dry history. Mainly anecdotes and personal stories. Still, very interesting ones. Just some points taken off for some editing issues. I believe this was self published, and while for the large part it is professional and well written, there are a few errors, mainly towards the end.

Grant tells how stewardesses and pilots faced racial bias, not being hired by commercial airlines until the mid-1960s. Grant herself started working for Delta in 1971. Most of the stories are secondhand. The main problem is the book isn't very interesting.

Great book of stories from one of the first Black stewardesses in the US (back when they were still called a "stewardess" instead of the current term "flight attendant").
