Fallen King

Rate this book
Tito Mangione rules the city with a bloody fist. Few dare to cross him, and fewer still survive to become examples for the rest.

Weakness? Obliterated. Kindness? Ha! There’s no place for kindness in Tito Mangione’s world. No place for gentleness, no place for compassion.

There’s definitely no place for a gay son.

So what am I to do? I can’t let the Don of Downtown know my true desires. I stand to inherit everything someday, but I don’t want any of it. Not the money, not the family business, not the power.

What I want is Aron.

He’s been my companion since I was a kid. His dad guards mine, and we’re inseparable. He’s the only one who understands me, the only one who knows the life I was born into.

The only one who knows my secret.

Every king must fall, though, and when Tito’s time comes, it’ll be up to me to shoulder the burden of leadership, to lead the Syndicate through the tragedy.

It’ll be my turn to rule.

Im giving the book 3 stars because I did like the plot and the cliffhanger it ended on made me want to keep reading the series. But if I am honest, it is one I almost set down. I know they have secretly been in love with each other for yrs but it just seemed rushed and forced. I may go back and read book 2 later when I don’t have other things I would rather read.

Synopsis:
Matteo Mangione was born to be king of a violent empire, but his heart has always belonged to the one man he can never have.
Aron is his best friend, his shadow, his protector… and the only person who knows the truth.
In a world where weakness gets you killed and love between them is a death sentence, they keep their relationship hidden in stolen moments and unspoken promises.
But when blood is spilled and Matteo is forced to claim his crown, the line between duty and desire shatters.
Because a king can rule an empire, but loving Aron could destroy it.
A dark, angsty MM mafia romance full of power, secrecy, and a love that refuses to stay buried.

Tropes:
MM mafia romance 🖤
Best friends to lovers 🖤
Forbidden love 🖤
Bi/gay awakening 🖤
Bodyguard 🖤
Secret relationship 🖤
Forced to take the throne 🖤
Loyalty vs love 🖤
Found family 🖤

MAFIA ROYALTY

The start to a new trilogy from A.J. Mullican and it was great. With mafia MM romance, awakenings, betrayal and plot twists, I really enjoyed reading Mattaeo and Aron's story. Patron Saint indeed!! Strong writing and a really well thought out plot from the author allows you to fall into this world and be sucker punched with that cliffhanger!! Wonderful characters, even the villains, steamy scenes and witty banter, round out this great book.

Fallen King had a really intriguing premise and strong world-building that immediately pulled me in. The darker tone and tension kept things interesting, and I appreciated the morally gray dynamics at play. That said, the pacing felt uneven at times, and I struggled to fully connect with the characters emotionally. Overall, it’s a solid start to the series with enough intrigue to make me curious about what happens next.

This book sets up the foundation for a series. It mainly follows the story of Matt who is the only son to a powerful mafia don. When the Syndicate is attacked, Matt and his best friend/main guard set out to make sure that everyone knows who the new boss is. The story ends with a huge cliffhanger that makes you want to know immediately what is coming next….

WHAT?!

That ending probably should’ve been something I seen coming, but HUH? Book 1 was good, I wish we got to see a bit more of Aron coming to terms with his feelings before it turned to romance… but dang it was steamy!

This book was really good! I really enjoyed it. Getting to know both guys. Matteo is the leader of the syndicates son he has a lot of responsibilities. Which include having a wife and kids. He’s expected to start a family so when he is head of the syndicate he won’t have to worry about the men not accepting him. Except hes in love with his best friend and has been for years. Aron on the other hand is married with a baby on the way. He acts like he doesn’t even notice that Matteo is in love with him while he hooks up with a bunch of different guys right in front of him. He’s his bodyguard so he just protects Matteo. Until all hell breaks loose and Tito the leader and a ton of their men get blown up. Matteo has to step up & lead now. Aron’s wife & unborn baby are also blown up. It devastates him & Matteo just wants to take care of him. While doing so he accidentally confesses his love for him thinking he’s asleep. Aron already knew he just didn’t want to say anything to p ruin their relationship. Now though he’s opening up to Matteo. He discovers he’s always been attracted to him just hid it really deep down. Anyways, they have to figure out how to be together in their lifestyle with out being killed for being gay. They come up with a perfect solution one they are all happy with & they get to be together. Crazy cliffy so going to read book 2!

Fallen

Loved this story. Matt and Aron are meant for each other but the life they live will never accept them. They face death and betrayal at every turn. Their story has just begun.

DNF at 70%. I am stunned at the writing choice to brush over the MCs' FIRST kiss, and FIRST sexual experience together in 1-2 sentences?! This had a lot of promise, but the pacing was way off. Rating somewhere between 2 and 3 stars, but I can't get over the above.

Good story

A small twist on modern mafia and forbidden love. While I liked the story, Arons feelings seemed like a light switch situation. Cliffhanger ending, you've been warned :)
