Val Biro (pronounced Beer-oh) was a children's author, artist and illustrator, was a native of Hungary, but was a resident in Sussex in England. He received his education in Budapest and London. His studio was located in Amersham in Buckinghamshire.

"I write so as to give my alter-ego a good chance for drawing pictures, though I find that the story I invent tends to run away with itself, leaving me, the illustrator, behind! Each story tends to be based on personal experience and, equally, each tends to grow out of that into the imagination. Each book seems to take a few months to gestate, and then I write it in one long day (or night)."

From humble beginnings prior to the death of his father at age 11, and desperate times afterward, Hans Christian Anderson attained a level of fame and financial stability in his lifetime. His gift for spinning an intriguing story has delighted both children and adults for generations. Today, the Danish author is remembered as the father of the modern fairytale.

This edition of his stories is retold and illustrated by Val Biro, who was born in Hungary and educated in London. The story telling is modernized and adequate to capture Anderson's eloquence. But it is the lively illustrations that make this book an enjoyable read with a youngster. Biro's style focuses on illustrating characters in movement which provides added interest to her snapshots of the action. Stories included are:

The Wild Swans,
Dan the Dunce,
The Emperor's New Clothes,
The Flying Trunk,
The Ugly Duckling,
The Little Tin Soldier,
The Nightingale, and
Thumbelina.

And therein lies the disappointment. The Emperor's New Clothes and The Ugly Duckling are the stars of this edition, but the other stories are lesser know because, while they are interesting and certainly worth the read, they are not Anderson at his best. Many famous tales, such as The Little Mermaid (so iconic her statue sits in Copenhagen harbor!), The Princess and the Pea, The Snow Queen, or Little Match Girl are notably missing. Those seeking a definitive source for Hans Christian Anderson's brilliance may want to either complement this edition with another title or find a more comprehensive book all together.

I do like Biro's work, and am content with it as a home school title, but it leaves me wanting more Hans Christian Anderson from her, and open to replacing this book with another.

We certainly enjoyed reading this more modern adaptation of many of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales. One of the positives some reviews provided about this book was that the stories were more obscure within his collection. I liked having a beautiful storybook to read to my kids, however, what the book gained in illustrations, it felt like it lacked in prose. The stories were too simplified. Once you have the illustrations that kids will study, my experience is that they will listen longer. Additionally, one of the reasons I like reading the classics to my children is that former societies used more formal language so the stories when read today, speak "up" to children and introduce them to eloquent language and new words. So, although this book has lovely illustrations, the collection was not a favorite.
